About Gail
I studied music from elementary school through high school, taking a break to have a family. After I volunteered to teach Kindergarten and first grade music at a school in Lakeside, I picked up my instruments and began to study again in earnest. Many hours of study, lessons and practice later, I am a better musician than I have ever been, and I've also gained a valuable perspective on teaching that I never could have had by simply being a musician.

I currently play viola with Equinox Quartet, playing Renaissance music up through the Baroque period.

My strengths lie in working with young children, helping them both understand music and love it. My goal for every student is to leave me having a strong understanding of theory, musicianship and desire to seek out more opportunities for growth. I work with each student to tailor a prog
ram specifically for their needs, from working through simple bowing mechanics issues to the psychology of performance. Each student has different challenges to overcome, and simply using a one-size fits all approach is not going to help them.

I pride myself in being flexible and available to to my students for questions, whenever they may need to ask them. I believe that you shouldn't have to wait for the next lesson to have the question answered that may just make the pieces start coming together a bit quicker for you.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson consists of checking student's progress, addressing any immediate issues and working on skill building.

OK, so those are the basics, but what happens is so much more than that! One student may have trouble hitting a C#, so we'll work on those. Another may have trouble relaxing, we might spend some time on breathing exercises to help with that. Still another might have a death grip on the neck of their instrument, so we'll do some exercises to help relax their hands.

My goal is to help students get well on their way to a lifetime love of learning and making music.

In 3-6 months, they should be:
* Reading music consistently at a level appropriate to their progress.
* Developing an understanding of rhythm and meter.
* Placing their fingers properly, and reliably for the most part.
* Developing correct posture and holding their instrument and bow in a relaxed manner that suits their body type and facilitates the freedom of movement required for great music.

My newbie (beginner with zero experience) son has been taking violin lessons via skype for almost 2 years now. I specifically was looking for a teacher who could meet us over the internet, considering I needed a break from the commute. Although I wasn't sure this could work, I gave it a shot...& I am SOOO glad I did! I love the flexibility for our lessons to be in the early morning before school, we could only do this online.

My son LOVES playing his violin! It's funny because he wanted to quit once or twice when he came upon new challenges, etc. Gail works patiently with him as he gains confidence, slowly but surely he has improved dramatically. She has customized his lessons perfectly to fit his needs which is what I was hoping for. Online accompaniment to his songs made it even more fun & we just started a fiddle book (my son's request) which he is enjoying enormously.

My son picks up his violin & plays on his own all the time, WOW! He sounds great, is learning good technique & theory, but most importantly he was given a chance to enjoy the learning process, to me this is priceless. You won't be disappointed with Gail, she is a GREAT teacher! So glad we found her!!!

Side note: In the beginning I was trying to figure out how to tune the violin for my son, & fingering.The snark tuner & the chinatera fingerboard sticker gave me some needed confidence that we could do this online.

Gail is a very good and kind violin teacher and was just perfect for my son's introduction to instrument. He really enjoyed the lessons and learning how to play each of the strings then putting them together in a song. It was a wonderful experience.

I specialize in teaching students with autism or other similar behavioral/learning challenges. I am a Registered Behavior Tech with a graduate level degree who is currently pursuing a post graduate certificate to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). While I may have formal training in teaching, my actual approach is very holistic. I like to get to know my students; I want to know about them- what kind of music they are interested in and how they learn best. Once I determine the type of learner that I am working with and what the student would like to achieve, I then use that to develop an individualized approach for that student. I believe that fundamentals are necessary and good, but I also believe that those fundamentals should be put to use in a manner that accommodates the student and their particular likes and musical goals as quickly as possible. What good are concepts without application? I want to see students playing with skill AND with joy because they are able to play what they love to listen to and even more....I like to see students create their own music with the skills that they acquire.

I compose music for films, video games, and for all kinds of genres. My favorite is for epic orchestras. I have developed a very simplified version of music theory that I believe anyone can understand. I always make things simple and understandable. I was in Prague last year recording the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra on an upcoming album. So I really know what I'm talking about in this area.

About Richard
My goal is to help students ENJOY the piano by finding ways to make it easier and doable. I have a very useful approach in helping students become self sufficient to sight read very well, to see patterns, understand music theory to either help them play well, or to even create their own music(I compose a lot of great music as well)

I couldn't sight read very well until I was 16, but I had a great sight reading teacher that showed me how to develop it, and now I can say that I'm one of the best sight readers out there that I know. I was a ballet pianist at Brigham Young University for several years where all I did was sightread binders full of ballet/classical music. I play for choirs, church congregations, jazz bands, or musical jam sessions all the time, and I couldn't do that at all if I didn't learn how to sight read well.
I would love to help you learn the piano, and I will do my best to make learning as effective as possible. I especially enjoy teaching those who quit and would like to try again, because I know what that is like.

Concerning my musical background, I've played, arranged, and composed piano for choirs, bands, jazz combos, singers. I've been in bands all my life, and have composed for jazz bands, choirs, and orchestras at BYU and in Eastern Europe. I also play about 10 different instruments. I won two Student Emmys in Hollywood for my compositions to BYU's animations in 2010 & 2014.

I am currently writing music for video games.

I am an adult learner and have just finished my first five piano lessons with Richard and have already booked up five more! I have been working through the excellent Piano Pronto series with him, but Richard has also been happy to set me practice pieces from other books of my choosing and has been very adept at helping me, even with pieces that are unfamiliar to him.

Richard is also a teacher on Piano Maestro, an iPad application where you can, among other things, play the pieces from Piano Pronto (and Alfred's). This has been a great way to practice, and would be especially good for children (as Richard gets a weekly progress report, including time played).

Richard is very flexible and teaches each lesson at my pace - so, the more I practice, the more I can progress! He is patient and encouraging and clearly wants me to enjoy each lesson - and I do! I can't wait to begin my next block of lessons!

Paul has been a tremendous instructor for me and my journey on learning acoustic guitar. Paul is an amazing teacher and mentor. Today we tackled harmonies while recording and it was so special to me. Paul is dedicated to his craft and his students.
