My Philosophy:

There is great music potential waiting to be untapped in yourself. I value greatly the time I spend with every student and wish them to become the very best at the instrument they wish to pursue.

There is indescribable expression to be found in music. A wide range of emotions can be conveyed along with untold stories just waiting to
be opened up. I will help foster a student's ability to see music for what it really is and help them strive for whatever musician they wish to become, whether it be for personal fulfillment, just for fun and recreation, or even in the pursuit of becoming an effective classical musician.

My Education:

My mother took me took a classical concert when I was six and I sat in the front of the stringed section. After the concert I made my decision that would shape the rest of my life, I wanted to become like those musicians.

I eventually graduated from a local music school in the following years in piano and violin and immediately went to enter the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. I was among the 10 out of 40 applicants that were eventually chosen, along with being the youngest of them as well.

After four years of study, I graduated and received my Bachelor's Degree in Music. I then went on to study for another year and received my Master's Degree in Piano.

My Other Experience:

I was Church Music Director in Kiev for Living Water Church from 2002 - 2010. I directed the adult choir, directed and led church worship services, accompanied various musicians and managed all aspects of church music responsibilities, including budgeting, rehearsals, planning and library management.

I also have been a private music teacher for several years teaching adults and young students. I planned lessons with them and established their repertoire.

I am also fluent in the Russian language and have extensive computer literacy.

*** Lesson Details ***
I pay close attention to the fundamentals of music especially throughout the early lessons. These include reading notes, measuring tempo and rhythm, sight reading, hand positioning, posture, and technique.

I believe in positive reinforcement for all my students. Building a kind and friendly atmosphere is paramount for encouraging students, especially children, to continue pursuing music. Everyone I believe has hidden music potential, and I believe the key to unlocking this is through inspiration. Music is a grand adventure of excitement and discovery for everyone.

I am very kind and honest with my students and am never too strict with them, but I do require and greatly encourage regularly that they make habitual practice a vital part of their musical education. As the old saying goes, "Practice makes Perfect." There is great truth to that saying especially when learning a musical instrument.

Excellent Teacher

I am an older student and I started to learn to play the piano more than a year ago under a different teacher. I started with Eugene about 4 months ago. I was struggling with the piano previously. But after just 2 lessons with Eugene, I found myself playing confidently. Eugene explains so clearly and everything makes sense to me now. I enjoy practicing everyday now. He is excellent teacher, patient, and very professional. He is always on time.

I'm a young, enthusiastic, energetic, and patient pianist with a B.A. in Jazz Piano Performance from Lewis and Clark College.

So, born in Dallas, I've spent parts of my childhood in various parts of the country, from Washington D.C. to Carbondale, Colorado to Portland, Oregon, and now in hot and humid Houston, Texas. America has a plenty to offer and our great country's musical history is rich and eclectic. I first started playing piano at a very young age from a very old lady. It was something I resented my parents for, not really understanding the whole point of playing music. But now, in retrospect, I thank them indefinitely for exposing me to one of the most important passions of my life. It was in 6th grade that I joined a rock n' roll band, singing and playing all sorts of keyboards and having a ball with music. The idea that I w
as having fun playing music finally dawned on me and the verb "playing" music finally made perfect sense to me. Without passion, music is simply another endeavor, so this realization propelled me into the realm of music indefinitely.

In high-school I finally learned what jazz music was and fell in love with the idea of spontaneous improvisation. Learning theory really helped and I started jamming with my buddies, eventually starting a cover band. Although I've never lost sight of my classical roots, trying to improve my technique as well as my sight-reading, it was in jazz that I really found my calling. So in college, I started studying with a great jazz pianist, Randy Porter, and found my fingers wrapping themselves around my own music in a way I never thought possible. So that's that, I've recently graduated, having played gigs and teaching kids, and found my way into a new city with new possibilities.

When it comes to teaching, most teachers adhere to a strict curriculum. While I do love my curriculum, I will often change things around in order to cater to my students' different needs. Through all my experiences, I've learned that positive reinforcement is ideal and that a good association with a learning experience often paves the way for more of them. Working with me gives students the opportunity to make headway in an instrument without painstaking monotony. The more that somebody enjoys learning, the more that they learn. I love to have fun when I'm teaching, so my students tend to have fun as well. Like I said earlier, music should be "played," and playing should be fun!

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons will usually begin with a recap of the last week, what the student has practiced, and what they accomplished since the last lesson. For some students, I will assign listening over the week, so at the beginning of the lessons, I read over the observations that they made in regards to the songs they listened to.
One thing I require of all of my students is a notebook devoted solely to the lesson, where the student writes down what he/she thinks about in terms of accomplishments and what they want to learn. I will also write down in the notebook different techniques, assignments, and various other things related to the lesson for the betterment of the student. My typical lesson will involve a communication between the student and myself, trying best to learn where the student is coming from and cater to his/her necessities in terms of learning. I am laid back, for the most part, but will encourage the student to practice. I do not get angry, but I will try to inspire the student through various techniques, becoming more disappointed than enraged at a student's lack of enthusiasm. Lessons for me are fun and I try and convey that jovial enthusiasm to my students.

Lessons in living room with upright piano, couch. I do have cats, so heads up if you're allergic.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I may or may not bring music paper and lesson books. If it is the first lesson, I'll definitely bring some material. I expect a piano in the home of the student given the enormous stature of the instrument.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz piano, first and foremost. Although I was coached in classical as a child and can easily teach most intermediates, jazz is my forte and my major in college. In terms of teaching styles, it all depends on the student. More than most teachers, though, I put a heavy weight on listening to music in order to fully understand it. Technique is very important and must be taught, but feel is probably paramount and should be emphasized. Before a student can accurately play a piece of music, he/she must be able to connect with the music. When it comes to the piano, especially jazz piano, theory and knowledge of how the sounds of the instrument interact are also crucial. I will teach an appropriate amount of theory to the students given the style of play and pieces they are learning.

Piano lessons

Jerred is an easy going, flexible and professional teacher who teaches my 7 years old son. My son sees him as his role model and has taken to Jerred's style of teaching very well. Very impressed with what he has achieved so far. Currently we go to his apartment which is in a great location.

I am an enthusiastic and fun teacher. I acquired my bachelor's and master's degree in piano performance. I started playing piano at the age of 6. Since I was 8 years old, I have been trained systematically and professionally throughout my years in school. My solo performances and recitals were held when I was attending the University of Wyoming. I have great passion towards performing in public, but I found greater love in teaching piano. Strict but fun and enthusiastic, these words were said by my students after years of teaching. In Piano lessons, I assign diverse music repertories in order to assist students to have the ability to grasp the essen
tials of each different style of music. Learning piano skills is very important, but note-reading, theory, ear training and music history can't be neglected. I will include all these subjects consistently during the lessons to help the students build stronger and richer musicality. One or two recitals will be provided by me, all the students are encouraged to participate in the recitals.Students are also encouraged to take advanced performance opportunities, in church, school, and joint studio recitals. I must be notified at least one month in advance if the student desires to participate in the events.

Students responsibility:
-Daily practice is strongly recommended. It is important and necessary for steady progress.
-Students should have neat, clean, trimmed nails at every lesson.

Music Education is incredibly important, and the field
I hold dearly to my heart. Music is my passion in life,
and it is why I wake up in the morning. Music can enrich
someone’s life, whether it is simply listening to a piece
of music, or studying an instrument for one’s lifetime.
Studies have shown that music education can and has
increased intellectual skills, especially in mathematics and
reading. When learners are motivated and very studious
in music education, many of these students become

In conclusion, an education and especially a music
education is so important for the emotional and intellectual
development of a human being.
Music is an excellent medium for collaborat
ion in which
students can grow and excel as individuals. Choir, band,
orchestra, and various chamber groups can spark a child’s
interest, as well as interact with other peers in a positive
environment.
A student can feel a great sense of accomplishment and
learning through the study of music. After weeks, if not
months of rehearsal and practice, the student will then
have the privilege of performing in public. The teacher’s
role in this factor is so crucial in that the teacher needs
to be very experienced in the field, and also has to have a
passion for what he or she does.
Studies have shown that the study of music greatly
enhances brain power. Test scores are greatly increased,
especially in the areas of math and reading. Studies have
also shown that students who study music are motivated
to achieve in life. Many music students go on to become
professionals such as doctors, lawyers, and teachers.
Some music students even become leaders of nations,
such as our past president Bill Clinton.

Whether the lesson is 30 min. up to an hour, the format is the same: The student first reviews the piece(s) of music and materials from the lesson last week. I'm always emphasizing retention and recall. Next we start on new information and new piece(s) of music. For the remainder of the lesson we do theory and written work, then conclude with older pieces (usually the student's choice).

I have been teaching this subject for over 13 years. There is no specific curriculum as each student will come to lessons with their own unique skills, needs, and goals. Lessons are tailored to those specifics. Theory lessons are usually taken in conjunction with performance lessons (an instrument or voice) so they can make practical application of what they learn in theory. Beginner students start with fundamentals of notation, and tonal harmony. Lessons for more advanced students will include form, analysis, modal, tonal, and extended tonal harmony, contemporary procedures, and more. Lessons are a minimum of 60 minutes once per week. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study. Theory lessons are particularly good as extra support for classroom work.

About Troy
Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. W. moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.

Troy also has maintained a private studio, tutoring and teaching private lessons in composition, ear training, voice, piano, literature, and history for over ten
years. Students who have studied with him come from a wide range of backgrounds with different goals. Those who have continued with musical studies in college have consistently placed out of at least the first two semesters of music theory and achieved advanced placement in their chosen fields of study. Those who chose a different path continue to benefit from the education and training they received from taking music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.

To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet.
The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons.
Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!

Performers: It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Lessons are not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.

Composers: Just as with performers, it is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either written, notated, or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
• To reschedule a lesson, more than one day notice is required.

• Make up lessons must be scheduled before the next regular lesson.

• A make up lesson cannot be scheduled in place of a regular lesson.

• If, for any reason, two 30-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 30-minute lessons, not one 60 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• If, for any reason, two 45-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 45-minute lessons, not one 90 minute lesson which is a different rate.

So far, I look forward to each lesson! Troy is very kind, yet very helpful and has helped me target on my personal goals with opera while also learning more each time! I highly recommend him. It doesn't matter if you have no experience in voice or only experience in voice ( as my experience is theatre and musical theatre), he is patient in helping you achieve the goals set. I cannot wait to continue lessons with him!

An active performer, composer, and teaching artist, Chung Him has over 7 year’s experience in music teaching, program innovation, and syllabus development.
Chung moved to Rexburg to study music at BYU-Idaho with an emphasis in piano performance and communication in 2012.
While he was in college, Jeffrey performed for numerous campus events and devotionals; he also played for the Jazz Lab Band, Collegiate Singers, Men’s Choir Women’s Choir and Women’s Glee.
Chung started learning the piano at the age of 6 and the cello at the age of 10. As a young musician, he toured Malaysia as a cellist in 2007 and won different awards with the Hong Kong musical festival.

Chung loves working with families with young children. He enjoys strengthening family bonds while introducing children to a lifelong love and appreciation for music.

Janet is the most knowledgeable and technical piano and voice teacher I have ever known. She pushes her students to be the absolute best while encouraging them along the way in their gifts. If you're serious about learning and becoming the best you can be in piano or voice, without a doubt Janet is the teacher for you! She expects a lot from her students, but puts in even more on her end to prepare you to be the best that you can be. You won't find another teacher around who cares about her job the way she does! As a composer, I am a huge music theory nerd. I like to apply "traditional/classical" music theory together with "jazz harmony" and musical theories present in today's modern music world. As a film composer, I may have to write different kinds of music, so music theory is key for me to know. My name is Michael and I have been a musician for over 20 years. I recently attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music the past few years and want to share my experience with you!

I earned my Bachelor's in Music from Berklee College of Music where I focused on performance, education and ear training. When you have a properly trained ear and enough understanding of music theory, the doors are open to any and all styles.

I've taught general music at a school in the Galapagos Islands, coached student ensembles, tutored college level music theory and worked with students with moderate-severe handicaps.

I have a deep fondness for music from all over the world, and some of my favorites are Classical Indian Music, Pakistani Qawwali, Balkan Music and Kirtan. This means we can work on any style you like!

I earned my music degree from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA where I focused on performance, education and ear training. My principal instrument is drum set, but I also enjoy playing guitar and ukulele. I started teaching private drum lessons when I was in high school, taught music for two years at a small school in the Galapagos Islands and spent some time working at a school for students with severe disabilities where I also taught music. Most of my schooling was in contemporary styles like Jazz, Latin, Blues and Rock, but I very much enjoy music from around the world. Lately some of my favorites are: Qawwali, Kirtan, Balkan and Moroccan music.

I believe firmly in the teaching principle of "Rote Before Note." Reading sheet music is certainly a great skill, but having ears that are tuned in is the greatest asset for a music
ian. I start by teaching without sheet music so that students start focusing on listening, start developing musical memory and because it's great fun! Because I studied music education in college and have worked in schools, I know how to develop an appropriate curriculum for each student.

For students that stick with me or are already established on their instrument, we will work on incorporating deeper concepts into their music, such as, "How can you make your playing fluid like water?" "How would you demonstrate Yin Yang harmony in your playing?"
