I have been teaching this subject for over 17 years. There is no specific curriculum as each student will come to lessons with their own unique skills, needs, and goals. Lessons are tailored to those specifics. Theory lessons are usually taken in conjunction with performance lessons (an instrument or voice) so they can make practical application of what they learn in theory. Beginner students start with fundamentals of notation, and tonal harmony. Lessons for more advanced students will include form, analysis, modal, tonal, and extended tonal harmony, contemporary procedures, and more. Lessons are a minimum of 60 minutes once per week. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study. Theory lessons are particularly good as extra support for classroom work.

Troy is an absolutely magical teacher and mentor. He not only provides caring, personalized instruction that goes far beyond the traditional fundamentals, he really takes the time to push me in ways that I find enjoyable and rewarding. I feel as though my lessons are dynamic and varied enough to keep me always engaged and looking forward to that next session. Best of all, Troy is that special type of guru that really gives you that added incentive to go the extra mile...I never feel a guilt or pressure to be at a certain level or practice a certain amount, I just feel this desire to impress Troy during my next lessons. Awesome stuff - very special guy! Looking forward to a lifetime of learning with Troy!

I can teach music harmony and theory with an emphasis on contemporary music theory. I can also help students learn music theory from the 'common practice period' (classical) as I have studied that as well.

About Robert

Robert began playing guitar in Houston, Texas at the age of 12. It was not long before he began playing in bands and played his first professional gig at age 17. Robert performed in and around the Houston area for five years before deciding to study music on the college level. He attended the Uni

Robert is very nice and polite. I think the lesson was sufficient for the first lesson. He gave me homework to work on the D, G, and C chords. We went over the right hand numbering PIMA. I need to determine what my goals are in playing the guitar.

I am very happy with my guitar lesson with Mr. Calva. He is very knowledgeable and very patient. He found out my musical background and goals. He used that to structure my lessons today. He then gave me homework, tips, and short term goals. I am super pleased with his style of teaching. By the way, I am 50 years young...

I became obsessed with music theory when I started composing music in high school. I have an uncommonly high level of enthusiasm for it and would love to share it with you.

I know music theory basics like the back of my hand. I used to write pieces with Common Practice Period voice leading for fun. I regularly work with classical and jazz harmony, and I have analyzed many pop and rock songs.

Whether you are looking to improve as a composer or songwriter, or to pass a music theory class, I can make music theory fun and relevant for you.

About Paul

I have played piano my whole life, and I also play guitar and trumpet. I love jazz, classical, contemporary, and rock music and many other diverse styles. I am an improviser, composer, and music theory enthusiast, very in touch with the creative side of music. I’m easygoing and patient. I put

Whether you're coming for roman numeral analysis, SATB chorales, or help analyzing short works, symphonies and preparing for tests, I have extensive knowledge of the inner workings of music. For example, I believe music contains patterns, relationships and structures. I will help you master recognition of these elements through ear-training and harmonic and rhythmic dictation. With my lessons, you can achieve successful SATB part writing and we'll work together so you leave the lesson with not just a modern understanding of theory, but a sense of accomplishment. I also teach Schenkerian analysis, 20th century techniques such as serialism and set theory. In closing, I will give you the tools to bolster you in navigating these concepts so you can understand music on a deeper level and apply your learning to real-world examples, or classroom assignments.

"We hired Brian to work with our barely 3 year old to play the drums we got him for his birthday. He loves it! We don’t have any grand aspirations for him, but he likes to bang around and we wanted to give him some direction to see if he latched on to it. Our main objective is that he has fun. Brian is GREAT with him and he looks forward to it every week. 10/10!"

Music Student Face-Off: Memorizers vs. Readers | Which is Better?

As you learn songs and work through your music books, do you memorize the notes? Or do you read along every time you play? In this post, music teacher Vanessa G. discusses the pros and cons to the approaches...   Imagine your teacher gives you a piece of music to study. What's your process? Do you listen to a recording, memorizing the melody and the stylistic aspects before you begin, and then as you play? Or would you sit down and sight read the notes, and perfect it from that star …

Understanding Music Theory Through Colors

Struggling to understand a music theory concept? Sometimes, all it takes is a tweak to the way material is taught for a student to really grasp it. Here, Pittsburgh voice teacher Jennifer V. reveals her unique ROYGBIV method...   Has your child ever come home in tears because they just couldn’t master a skill they learned in school? You listen, wipe their tears and tell them “Tomorrow is a new day,” and “I know you can do it!” But the next day he or she comes home upset about th …

How to Change the Key of a Song With and Without a Computer

What Does it Mean to Change a Key? To change a song’s “key” means to shift the whole musical system to a higher or lower position. This process is called “transposition.” Performers often need transpose a song to better fit their voices. That way, a performer with a naturally lower singing voice (like myself) will be able to more comfortably sing a song that was originally written for someone with a naturally higher voice. Or vice versa.  For singers, transposition feels fairly …
