I really enjoyed my 1st meeting with Paul. He helped me to feel confident about learning to play the saxophone. I look forward to my next lesson.

Paul is so great! I'm an adult learning the alto saxophone with almost no prior music experience. He is patient with my many questions, very encouraging, highly skilled (as a musician and instructor), and fun to be around! The majority of our lessons are online and that is working well too.

I have been teaching students of all ages since the late 80's how to play the Classical Guitar, read music and music theory as well.
I very much enjoy teaching and helping students achieve their goals.

About Ingo

Hi, I was born in Iceland and have lived in Houston since 1994. I graduated from Reykjavik Conservatory where I majored in Classical Guitar Performance and Music Theory. I am a versatile musician, performing artist, and a master teacher with a long career as a teacher of the classical guitar.

I have been taking classical guitar lesson's with Ingo since I was 13 years old. I have learned so much in the past 15 years about the guitar and how to play it the CORRECT way. Each lesson starts with a cup of coffee and then some warm up left hand /scale exercises and then moves onto repertoire. He is very knowledgeable and I enjoy our weekly lessons and learning new music.
David Ragsdale
Fantastic teacher. I'm retired and most of Ingo's students are above 40, he says. He has some young ones too of course but it's nice to know I'm not the only one. Matter of fact he told me his oldest student is 82 years old. Fantastic! Ingo is extremely knowledgeable about classical music in general and especially the classical guitar. I love the time we spend together and always look forward to my next lesson. Our conversations are as good as the guitar lessons. I encourage all people of all ages to see him for their classical guitar lessons. I have learned a lot and have made very good steady progress since I started. He is the real deal.

Ingo is the best. Simply the best.
I’ve had two other teachers before I found him and there is simply no comparison to how much better he is. He is a real reacher! The other two were posers.

I can teach from beginner to advanced. Multi styles with emphasis on chord and rhythm playing, improvisation, music reading and musicianship. My stylistic specialties include Blues, Classic Rock, R & B, Country and Jazz. My goal is to teach my students the fundamentals of the instrument as it relates to music, how to play the music they hear in their heads and to be the best they can be.

About Robert

Robert began playing guitar in Houston, Texas at the age of 12. It was not long before he began playing in bands and played his first professional gig at age 17. Robert performed in and around the Houston area for five years before deciding to study music on the college level. He attended the Uni

Robert is very nice and polite. I think the lesson was sufficient for the first lesson. He gave me homework to work on the D, G, and C chords. We went over the right hand numbering PIMA. I need to determine what my goals are in playing the guitar.

I am very happy with my guitar lesson with Mr. Calva. He is very knowledgeable and very patient. He found out my musical background and goals. He used that to structure my lessons today. He then gave me homework, tips, and short term goals. I am super pleased with his style of teaching. By the way, I am 50 years young...

Guitar students start with five subjects.

1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument.

2) Scales are a part of basic music vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language.

3) Chords are also basic vocabulary of the musical language.

4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the students' goals. However, I strongly encourage everyone learn to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read?

5) Songs utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. The student chooses what songs they want to play, guided by my suggestions; Jazz, rock, blues, country, bluegrass, R &B - "How deep is the ocean, how high is the sky?"

A beginning student will practice all

About Phillip

I teach music. The guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele just happen to be the particular instruments I choose. Music as a language, discipline, and art, is the goal. I've been teaching, performing, studying, composing, for some thirty years. I've studied and gigged in the classical, jazz, rock, blu

Phil is a consummate musician and is extremely knowledgeable and patient. He helped me to arrange several songs and encouraged me to write my own arrangements, as that really helps one better understand the instrument. I loved our lessons on learning all the scales and modes, too.

I've been teaching guitar for over eight years. I've previously been a part of two bands during my formative years and recently have been a session guitar player for four upcoming indie rock, alternative, and R&B/Soul albums.
For children and beginners, I use the Mel Bay publication Children's Guitar Chord Book as well as Hal Leonard's Guitar Method series. I also apply basic music theory that includes learning the Circle of Fifths and basic reading of sheet music.

For intermediate guitar players, I utilize the Gibson's Learn and Master Guitar series to teach Power Chord Formation and Delivery, Fingerpicking, Pentatonic Scales, Reading Tabulature, and tackling some of classic rock and jazz's favorite tunes.

For guitar lessons at my studio, I leverage Guitar Pro to project and display tabs and play-alongs with ease. For in-home lessons, I use the software for select lessons as we begin song selection and play-alongs.

I can't wait to rock out with you as you find your inner ...

My guitar lessons have an emphasis on rhythmic and harmonic training (how things sound and feel). Building a sense of melody and musicality are also a strong focus. This is accomplished through learning and playing familiar songs, reading different kinds of music, and improvising/composing. All the while, we will be building a relaxed and natural approach to the instrument.

Taking Electric Bass Guitar lessons with Dan Brown, has been a great experience. Dan listened to my goals and tailored the lessons around my ability and musical influences. His classes are well structured, but also relaxed. Dan has incredible knowledge of the Bass and has encouraged me in all styles of play including slap Bass. I have no hesitation in recommending Dan to anyone interested in learning Bass.

How to Find the Best Guitar Cable for Your Live Performances

When it comes to live performances, guitarists need a lot of equipment to help project their sounds to the audience. Without amplification equipment, it becomes difficult for the audience to hear our instruments. One of the most important pieces of gear we need besides an amplifier is a guitar cable. A cable is a cord that plugs into our guitar pickup and then into our amps. There are many cords out there by different manufacturers, and each player has different preferences. In this article …

From Guitar to Mandolin and More: How Easy is it to Switch Instruments?

It's an awesome feeling when you start making music! And after you've mastered a few songs, you might even have the itch to start branching out. Here, Doswell, VA teacher Jesse S. answers the question: Once you learn guitar, how easy is it to switch to bass, mandolin, or other stringed instruments?   This is a question that I hear frequently in guitar lessons.  Most students who start playing guitar will eventually become interested in trying to learn another stringed instrument; but doe …

Advantages & Disadvantages of a Fretless Guitar

Fretless instruments are not uncommon in the world of music, however, a fretless guitar is an instrument that isn't often mentioned. The fretless guitar lacks the frets that one would traditionally see on a guitar. This means that there is no interruption in the string from the bridge, up the neck of the guitar. The lack of frets create an entirely unique, warm, but less amplified sound that works across all types of music. In order to truly understand what a fretless guitar is, it is first …
