To me, learning any instrument is about balancing the exercises with the fun material that makes you want to keep playing. I am a technique-focused teacher insofar as making sure any student of mine is avoiding bad and sometimes unhealthy habits in their playing. I do, however, try to find fun ways to work on technique, with the end goal being playing repertoire that is fun for the student. I believe technical exercises have their place in learning any instrument, but that it's important to spend the majority of your practice time on material which is ultimately enjoyable to play.

I do have certain sets of books I like to follow depending on the student's interests and age, but I am always happy to tweak the lesson plan to fit the student's needs. I also tend to supplement whichever books I'm using with material of my own, to make sure we're also covering important topics such as music theory and maybe a bit of relevant music history in the process.

Hi there! My name is Josh, and I'd love to be your guitar teacher! I've been playing guitar since I was eight, starting out playing rock and roll, then focusing on classical training for my college career. In both undergraduate and graduate school, I studied classical composition as a classical guit

I grew up on bossa, and wanted to learn how to play it. I had played guitar for years but mostly rock and folk. Josh was able to take what I knew and teach me how to play bossa music.

I never thought I'd study classical guitar, but Mr Josh showed me how important it is to have a good foundation to build from. Highly recommended!

Great player and even better teacher! I didn't even know how to string my guitar when I started. Josh was patient and taught me everything I wanted to learn and more!

I was referred to JP by a friend and I am so happy with his lessons! I'm a songwriter and he teaches me in a way that makes sense to me and my craft. I finish my lessons feeling inspired and ready to apply everything I've learned so far about the guitar! JP is an awesome instructor!!

JP has been an amazing guitar teacher for the past few months. His style of teaching makes it so easy to learn during my in person lesson then practice on my own time at home. He’s patient and understanding and works at my pace. I highly recommend JP for anyone that has some guitar knowledge and looking to get better or to the person who’s never picked up a guitar. You won’t regret it.

JP is a phenomenal teacher/instructor and a musician himself. Has an amazing ear to grab any gtr riff, lick, or phrasing you want from any song you want to learn. He breaks down the theory into sections and steps, making it super easy to learn at your level and pace. He showed me how to find new chords within my progressions so I didn’t have to chase them up & down the neck of the guitar. Totally helped give me more confidence in my performance on stage. I highly recommend him to anyone at any level!

"Mark is an outstanding teacher - Highly Recommended

I contacted take lessons in hopes to better my soloing abilities and improve upon my theory. Mark Banning is the real deal. The man can play like no other and is undeniably knowledgeable in the realm of guitar. I have been playing since elementary and was once taught by Mark. It's great to have stumbled upon his profile on the take lessons site to be reunited with such an awesome teacher.

Teaching Skill:
-Extremely knowledgeable in countless styles of guitar
-A varied and highly organized curriculum that keeps things interesting
-I have applied everything that Mark has shown me thus far.

Professionalism:
-Apart from his goofy delivery of information it is clear that Mark has a professional side to him as well. Don't get me wrong. The guy is hilarious.
-Mark tracks every player's status in a binder so he knows exactly where they left off. I can feel and see my progression after every lesson.
-Mark will motivate you. He is not there to simply collect funds. The man genuinely cares about your playing ability.

Communication
-The information is always clear
-Allows time for questions each lesson
-Responds accurately

Reliability:
-I have only needed to reschedule once with Mark because he had a gig down south.

Teaching environment:
-In-house studio with a number of amps/guitars to choose from

Get lessons from Mark Banning. You WONT regret it."

What Age is Best to Start Learning Guitar?

Is there a best age for learning guitar? We asked guitar teacher Linda L., who has taught young children, teens, adults, and seniors for her take... My opinion on the best age at which to start learning guitar has evolved over the years. I started teaching myself to play the guitar at the age of 14. The book that I used to teach myself featured photos of a 7-year-old girl demonstrating how each chord was to be played. The author of the book told the readers that he had this youn …

How Much Should I Spend On a New Guitar or Bass?

First things first: Before you can make it to rock star status, you'll need a guitar or other instrument to practice with.  But what's the right model for a beginner? And how much do you really need to spend? Cardiff teacher Glenn P. tackles the common question here...   So, how much should you spend on a new guitar or bass? The answer actually depends upon a few basic criteria: 1. What is your budget for a guitar? 2. What is your commitment level to learning to play? 3. Do yo …
