My philosophy of music theory is to break it down into bite-size pieces and ALWAYS give an immediate application on the guitar. That way it's not just an empty idea, but something you can see and something you can use.

The chromatic scale is the foundation of my whole method. It's easy to understand and allows you to name ANY pitch ANYwhere on ANY instrument, recognize notes on the staff, and play melodies (or write your own!).

That foundation also gives you access to major/minor scales, modes, pentatonic scales, key analysis, learning songs by ear, soloing...the list is endless!

The best lessons I've ever had were lessons in wh
ich I walked away saying "Man, I never KNEW that!" and it's my goal for you have that experience, too. Whether its how to play that chord or write a melody, how to get the best sound out of those stomp boxes, or when genres like shoegazer and post-rock were invented and what they sound like... there's something to be learned in every lesson.

The most important benefit of taking lessons from me is my experience. I started teaching casually as a teenager and have followed every opportunity since. My passion for music has allowed me to teach private lessons (10+ years), middle school guitar class (including a guitar ensemble), and college-level music theory classes. Extensive experience in writing, recording, and performing has only helped that passion to grow. I've developed a method to blend theory with practice every step of the way, and make the journey fun!

Parker is a great teacher & a really nice guy. I have been working with him for about 18 months, and I have come a very long way in my technical ability as well as my understanding of music theory. He has a very low key, positive approach to our lessons, which makes them relaxing and fun, but at the same time he has the ability to get me out of my "comfort zone" and doing things that are new and challenging, from dabbling in different genres to creating new arrangements of old favorite songs to diving into the theory behind iconic riffs and chord progressions.
He has become a friend and I look forward to all of our online sessions.

My name is Ruthie and I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in May of 2007 with a Bachelors of Music Education degree with an emphasis in voice. Through my collegiate experiences, I had the privilege of participating in a Concert Choir, Barbershop/A Capella Ensembles, Vocal Jazz Ensembles and Performance in Solo Voice. The jazz program at UNC is one of the finest in the United States, and to be selected as a member of one of the vocal jazz ensembles was an honor in itself. From these experiences I have gained knowledge about the importance of vocal performance and music advocacy. I accepted a position as a general music teacher in Colorado in the fall of 2007 and then worked part time for a school in Laguna Niguel, CA until June of 2012. My passion for music started for me as a young child. I grew up in a musically inclined family, and was inspired and motivated by family members to use my gifts and talents to educate students about the world of music. I am huge lover of Barbershop/Sweet Adeline music and I recently competed in the International Young Women in Harmony Quartet Contest in Nashville, TN. My quartet, Vogue, won the competition. The Young Women in Harmony contest is for girls 25 years old and younger. I recently sang with a quartet called, Dolce. We competed in two International Competitions in Denver and Hawaii and placed 10th and 15th in the world. I was also a member of the International Gold Medalist Chorus, Harborlites, which is comprised of 180 female singers.

My lessons will be educational and fun. I want to find your passions and interests and from there I will create lesson plans to enhance your learning experience in your specified concentration. Voice lessons will start with vocal warm ups and exercises and then we will proceed to work on vocal techniques and preferred repertoire. Coming from a large extended family in Hawaii, I was surrounded by luau music, kachi-kachi dancing, Japanese bon dances, handsome local guys singing and playing their guitars and my aunties strumming their ukes and singing old songs. I reveled in walking alone in Nature or playing piano and singing in empty, stain-glassed churches – just wailing in the dark and colored light!

I studied: classical piano, organ, oboe, clarinet, violin, voice, and guitar. I sang in jazz trios and pop bands, earned income as a church organist/choir accompanist, and spent 15 years teaching private piano lessons to students of all ages.
I studied drawing and painting, I drew trees, animals, the ocean, sky and mountains, still life, and the people around me.

Upon arriving in New York City, I entered into a journey of playing at a Washington Heights gos
pel church, living in a building filled with musicians, accompanying vocal master classes, studying Sanskrit, Indian raga, world percussion, creative arts therapy and performance wellness.

I now compose and sing my songs - interweaving voice with keyboard or guitar. Besides teaching privately, I can be found performing my songs in clubs, outdoor festivals, coffee houses, and poetry/healing events. I currently attended a certificate program in sound & music healing and the focus of my music rests here. I incorporate many techniques to aid students in relaxation, breath awareness, and de-stressing.

One day, I decided to learn ukulele by myself but I became quickly stuck. I found Carolyn on this website and then went to her place to take my first lesson. Carolyn is super sweet; very welcoming, smiling, fun to work with. She is very positive and gives great feedbacks all the time! I learnt a lot during our session!! At some point, we sat at her piano to talk about notes and keys: it was very interesting to switch to another instrument. In addition, her place has very harmonious vibes: when I left I felt so much better!!! I definitely recommend Carolyn for music lessons! And I look forward to our next ukulele lesson!

A Note From Francesca:

My official bio is listed below, but perhaps more important than the things I have done are the things that I am doing. I am now approaching my 15th year of teaching. I love to teach! I carry a minimum of 30 students, but have carried more then 80 at one time, and have never once complained. My waiting list cycles based on my performance schedule and recording schedule. If you don't see a time that works for you, feel free to reach out and see if we can find something that works, as an artist, my schedule can be quite full but also quite flexible. I love my students, I get to do what I love all day and I am sure it shows. I have a blast discovering new ways to experience music with "my kids." I call all of my students kids even though most of my studio consists of young adults. I try to have a young air in my classes at all times as it just makes the process so much more fun for everyone.

I've seen it all in through years: kids, adults, beginners and advanced students. I am personally very interested in being the most versatile musician possible and I love being able to share my knowledge with my students. We can study anything and everything from Classical Guitar to Electric Guitar Shredding; from Opera to Kelly Clarkson; from Tchaikovsky to Little Richard! I love getting students to dabble in little bits of all genres, often getting even the most skeptical student singing and playing comfortably in a matter of just a few weeks. My students will be able to read music for their favorite tunes and understand how to improvise from the start. Once you come in, you'll be hooked. You will have fun because I am having fun!

I encourage all of my students to share their favorite music with me. It affords me the opportunity to learn more about what they desire to learn and what types of music they enjoy. We will learn with your music often. After all, isn't that why you are coming to see me? I will introduce you to new sounds and styles, but will foster your love for music, and do my best to never force my music on students. I feel I learn as much from my students when I truly listen to them and their music as they do from me.

On site lessons are available for artists recording demos, rehearsing bands and setting up their own studios.

On a side note, I love seeing students at my shows! I am a full time musician and can be seen playing with my band, in my own solo project and in various choral settings. Not many people have been blessed to sing alongside as many renowned musicians as I have - I've been lucky to be welcomed in both the commercial and classical worlds and they have both afforded me venues to use my voice and express the most vital corners of my soul. Joe is a great instructor. He has done a fantastic job explaining concepts in an understandable way, and utilizes a lot of computer tools to help the lessons, such as backing tracks. I would definitely recommend him as a teacher.

Angel and I have collaborated many times in live music performances as well as in recording studios. He continues to grow as a musician as well as a teacher and has helped me countless times accomplish many music related tasks. Angel taught me to read music and play the snare drum! He's teaching was absolutely amazing. His rates were extremely favorable compared to that of the competition, and his Patience with me was astonishing. Id recommend him to anyone. Before I went to him I'd no idea how to read or even hold a drum stick. After a few lessons with him , I'm satisfied with my ability to preform, read and play on my own. I recommend him to all.

I hold a Doctor of Music degree in composition and theory, and have taught both as a college professor. At the same time I am a professional jazz and pop pianist and understand the blues as our native language. So I can speak both the language of European classical music and American roots music and freely move between them. As an experienced composer, I treat the subject from a creative perspective and I know how to apply it to the art of songwriting.

My first musical language is jazz and the blues, which means I feel all American music, as the blues defines all of our music. I learned my craft from masters such as Marcus Belgrave in my hometown of Detroit, where I played in many Montreux-Detroit Jazz Festivals and toured with the Motown legends, The Temptations. I was always a composer, and that drive dominated the next stage of my career as a classical composer. I acquired a Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University and my works have been performed all over the world. I have just finished a commission for ten saxophone quartets, with premiers all over the nation to start in November, 2017. That much said, I have a deep respect for all forms of music, from Mozart to Miles Davis to John Mayer to Aretha Franklin. All are equally profound! And equally enjoyable!

I spent many
years as college professor, where I taught classical composition, jazz piano, recording, film scoring and recording arts. Since leaving that world, I have been very happily and deeply engaged in gigging, teaching and writing the music that comes from deep in my soul and which expresses all my influences.

My approach to teaching also reflects all my skills, and starts with what you want to do with your music. If you want to develop your songwriting skills, we approach from any angle-harmony, development of basic ideas, or seeing what makes a Beatles or Beyonce tune work. If you want to develop your soloing chops, we can look at the deep traditions of jazz and blues. If you're an improvising player who wants to understand theory or develop your reading, I've got strong qualifications there. If you're a beginner, that's cool too! If you have a passion, then everything else follows with an experienced teacher. Bottom line-if you have an idea of where you want to go with your music, I probably have the experience to help you get there, no matter what the style!

I teach from my home studio, where I have a beautiful grand piano and many keyboards. I usually play bass with my students. I can provide customized backing tracks for you to practice with. For Classical Piano, basic technique, Jazz Piano technique, and Jazz Theory you won't find a more competent, caring and deeply motivated piano teacher in the area. I know Chris primarily as a highly skilled, erudite Jazz Piano player, who is always willing to share his knowledge. Chris is well versed in many styles of play and can help you achieve your goals where-ever you may be at. As a jazz piano player/teacher myself, I would have no qualms about sending my students his way for new ideas, second opinions, etc. I recommend him.

I am a TakeLessons instructor and I took composition lessons with Chris. I thought compositions lessons would make me a better songwriter and producer, but instead Chris taught me that I was a composer first. What I learned not only expanded my knowledge of the fundamentals of music theory but learned how to use my ear and trust my musical choices. I highly recommend Christ. He entirely a new expectation in myself as a musician.

Tyler Stampe is an international award winning composer from the state of Iowa, USA. Stampe has written for many mediums including film, opera, choir, orchestra, chamber and solo instruments, and electronics.

As a teacher, Tyler has taught voice, music theory, sight reading, and composition lessons to students of all ages. He has a degree in music education, a degree in composition, and is currently finishing his final degree.

Mr. Stampe was a great teacher. He was always professional and fair about his tests and gradin
g. Aside from the basic music theory 1 curriculum itself, he gave the class additional input that gave some of the concepts more context. I learned alot. Most of all, I appreciated his willingness to help me on an individual basis. I don't think I grasped some of the concepts as fast as other students, but Mr. Stampe was always there to lend a helping hand. At times, I'd run into him just as he was leaving the building, but he'd still help me with a homework problem or two. He didn't have to do this, but I'm thankful that he did. I'd recommend Mr. Stampe to anyone wanting to take Music Theory.

Mr. Stampe is an absolutely fantastic teacher. I doubt I would have learned as much as I did throughout the Aural skills sequence at UGA if he wasn't my instructor. He just has a way with teaching and getting concepts across that is very effective. He goes above and beyond to make sure no one in the class ever falls behind, and is very understanding and willing to give extra help. He's so great!.

I love Mr. Stampe, he was very helpful and took time out of his schedule to help me when ever possible! The only thing I would say is try to include more dictations in class, don't focus as much on theory behind it, deffinetly still go over it but just not as much. For example it really did help though when, you would go over the functions of each chord and note. Thank you for a great year!

My name is Sarah, and I am a Music Therapy and Composition student at Converse. I have over 15 years of experience in piano, and play six other instruments as well. I have a passion for music, and love merging that passion with my love of teaching and helping others.

What makes my teaching style unique is that I can relate to students. I have been there, so I know how it feels. I know how practicing can be boring or frustrating, and how it can be hard to find time to practice. Theory. Sounds dull, doesn't it?!

With a proper understanding, however, it will be the most important 'tool' in your musical toolbox. It is more than nuts and bolts. It is the very 'reason' music sounds good or bad!

I teach how piano theory can be your friend and ally as we introduce intervals, analyze chord progressions, identify and integrate the I IV V, the ii V I, and other amazing fundamental progressions.

Then more advanced students learn jazz theory fundamentals, altered chords, tri-tone substitutions and other intimidating sounding but easy to learn musical devices. Together, we will tame the beast and make it submit not only to our understanding but to our musical advantage for comping, transposing, substitution and many useful purposes.

Theory will be your friend!

What do Star Wars, Billy Joel and Dallas Holm all have in common?

All three inspired me to attempt to play music.

Music has played a very significant role in my life since high school, where 'study hall' was my chance to first play by ear on a grand piano. I LOVED playing music and singing!

Evidently it 'took.' I sooned gained admission through audition to the University of Tennessee where I studied classical, jazz and vocal music with Dr. Bill Dorn, Dean of Piano, and acclaimed jazz master and author Dr. Jerry Coker.

From the World's Fair to the Biltmore House, I have enjoyed performing at these and many other venues. Yet, teaching is my first love musically.

Over the years I have found teaching not only sight-reading based methods but chordal and ear training to be essential elements of enhancing my students and student
performers.

You see, reading sheet music is only a piece of the pie. When you add ear-training, active listening, performance training, multi-genre analysis, accompaniment and collaboration to the educational mix, students begin to understand and LOVE music.

Once students love music, there is no stopping them! Students practice and PLAY more, and they get better because of their enhanced practicing. It becomes less work and more PLAY!

And passionate students become PERFORMERS! Whether for audiences of one or hundreds, the satisfaction and sense of fulfillment is amazing, and THAT is why I teach. The rewards and excitement are mutual, for the student, for me and their audiences.

I have been performing and teaching for over 35 years and love to share my amazing musical experiences (and experience). It could change your approach to music, enhance your appreciation and understanding of music, and quite possibly change your musical life.

Excellent instructor! Todd is knowledgeable, encouraging & patient while always staying on task. I've worked with him for 3 years now and have gained comfortability and confidence in my playing while staying motivated.
Todd is the 4th piano instructor I've worked with in my 12 years of living in WNC and I find him to be the best of all.

I had 2 years of piano lessons as a child followed by 6 years of flute in High School as an intermediate student. After hearing Todd perform at a special event, my life was changed! His passion for performing and playing inspire, engage and transform a room! Of course I wanted to take lessons! As a teacher he took me beyond the fundamentals into theory, key changes, cordal ear training, musical stylizing and so much more. Todd is very patient and knowledgeable; a wonderful communicator, entertainer, and teacher. I highly recommend him!
