I specialize in acoustic and acoustic/electric guitar - both classical and contemporary, steel string and nylon.

PLEASE SPEAK TO ME before purchasing your child's instrument. A standard size steel string guitar can be difficult to handle and may discourage your child.

I am interested in teaching you what you need and want to learn so that you achieve your dreams. Please note that I only take serious students who will practice at least 30 minutes every day or 35 a day 6 days a week at home. I would like you to keep a log of how much you practice. This will enable you to make progress through the curriculum as you will be a beginner for the first 3.3 years, an intermediate for the next 3.3 years, and then an advanced student for 3.3 years. I will give you assignments to do over the week, and the next week we will go over them, learn something new and get new assignments. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert!

Dr. Maureen Spranza, is a great music teacher, my son is taking piano classes with her and I'm very grateful with her, because she always take the extra time to make sure my kid is learning, my kid loves Mrs. Maureen because she is a great teacher but also she is a great human being, she really cares about her students. And she not only plays the piano, she plays all the instruments, I hope to see my son become a great musician thanks to the dedication that Maureen puts in his classes, my kid loves his piano classes, every time after clases he came home very exited to practice what he learned and al of this if because Dr. Maureen encourage him to be better in Avery class

Dr. Spranza is one of the best piano teachers in the Bay Area. My two daughters take weekly lessons with her. She encourages them and empowers them to do their best. She teaches them both theory and practicals. They have participated in an informal recital and are now registered to take part in the MTAC Certificate of Merit program.

As parents, we see a big improvement in our daughters' piano playing skills. They even practice on their own, without us telling them to. All thanks to Dr. Spranza.

Hi! I'm Scott. I perform with a one-man band setup I created which utilizes a modified guitar and home-made foot pedals to control a drum set, while I sing on top of it all. I have a recording studio at home, and have performed with bands as a singer, guitarist, saxophonist, bassist, percussionist, and as a sound engineer. I've written, performed and recorded my own album which made it to the 2nd round of the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, and was a voting member of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Grammy Committee and NARAS (National Association or the Recording Arts and Sciences.) Alexandra has been teaching harp and piano around the country for eighteen years through her personal harp studio and the Salvi Showroom in Southern California. She has also worked as a sectional coach for the Orange County Youth Symphony, Asia America Youth Symphony, and Palos Verdes Regional Symphony Orchestra. She has also had many mentors who have guided her life and career including: Kathleen Bride, Victor Salvi, Sally Maxwell, Patricia Masri- Fletcher, Robin Gordon- Cartier, Carrie Kourkoumelis, Dr. Craig Pare, and Karen Thielen.

*** Lesson Details ***

As a HARP teacher, all of my
students play scales, arpeggios, and technical exercises in
their lessons. I believe having a strong technical base is the foundation for
every part of playing and you can't learn without it. I will set the repertoire
for students according to their technical progress and although I may
take into consideration a student's desires to learn a certain piece, there has
to be time and they have to be ready for it. I have both short term and long
term goals for each student that involve theory, technical ability, and
repertoire: fun, orchestral and solo. Adult students still have to learn
technique, it makes things much more fun and easy six months later, I promise! Beginning students will learn how to read notes, understand basic theory, and technique in a short amount of time, so don't be scared if you have never had a music lesson before. 

I require all students make
at least half an hour a day commitment to practice. I teach mostly the Grandjany method of harp technique, however, I also use Salzedo and Renie methods
at times to fit a particular students' build and unique physical attributes as well as what the piece requires. I
have studied all techniques throughout my education and I find them all
beneficial for different reasons. I do, however, believe everyone is built
differently and the technique should help the harpist play and not hinder them
from achieving their goals. Everyone learns at a different speed, but as a
brand new musician, after six months practicing regularly, you should be able
to read music fluently, understand basic theory concepts, be able to play with
both hands and four fingers on each hand, play all of the basic scales and
arpeggios musically and be able to play at least one piece memorized.
Curriculum is based on the student's technical ability and issues and is
individually created – if you learn slower than someone else, don’t worry about
your pace. In the end, lessons are about you personally and not someone else.

As a PIANO teacher, I want students to learn about music and not just the piano. Students will learn basic music theory and basic scales as a part of their lessons. They will also occasionally choose a song of their choosing to work on chords. I do promote note reading and theory, so I am not the right teacher for students who don't want to invest time in learning the basics. These basics are the building blocks of all music and can be used for any instrument the student chooses to learn in the future.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have harps and a piano at my studio, so you do not need to bring your harp to lessons. If you don't own a harp, you can rent one for around $45/month from several sources. 

*** Specialties ***
HARP - Grandjany Technique with an incorporation of Salzedo and French school depending on the player's body type and technical difficulties. I make use of the ABRSM as well as local, national, and international competitions depending on the student's level of commitment.

PIANO - I teach basic piano for fun through an Intermediate level. Although some students choose to take CM and ABRSM exams, I do not push them. I want students to enjoy piano and music lessons.

From the moment I had my phone interview with Paul, I knew he was the right instructor for my son. We met for a trial lesson and sure enough he was exactly what we were looking for. My 12 yr. old has just excelerated in his music reading skills that I could not teach him on my own having started him on the keyboard myself since he was seven but was not successful. Paul is not afraid to stretch him and communicate to him in a way that he pleasantly receives along with weaving music history teaching continuously throughout the lesson. Right out of the gate his technique was addressed and the foundation was set up front and my son has an obvious, beautiful, step above, touch. Very grateful!

As you can see I’ve written a review for Matthew regarding my daughters success (her test was last year) so I’d like to write one for my son also. My son was not driving at the time and Matthew agreed to drive to our home and teach him for an additional nominal fee. My son also took multiple tutoring sessions with Matthew and learned something new every time. He felt confident going into the test, confident in his ability to complete the exam and do well on it. Matthew takes his time with each individual and works with their specific needs. My children needed help in different areas of the ACT and Matthew was more than capable of helping them in those areas. My sons ACT score also went up 4 points after working with Matthew! I can’t say enough how professional, kind and thorough he is.

I teach all levels of Music Performance skills. This ranges from Recital readiness, to how to audition for solo, choral, or Musical Theater productions. My students have a fabulous time performing for their school talent shows, as well as being offered solos for special musical Theater parts. My Students also perform for many other genres, including playing in Bands, or for special events. The Star Spangled Banner is always something that a singer can use in their repertoire.

My primary focus is teaching the best and most effective Vocal Techniques to students of all ages and backgrounds. I also teach Acoustic Guitar and finger picking. My teaching includes the Orff and Suzuki methods of music for Children. My primary focus is on teaching singing and I have been teaching beginning to advanced Voice, as well as beginning to intermediate acoustic guitar privately for over 25 years. My students perform in recitals at least twice a year. They also participate in local Broadway productions and Musicals for C.Y.T., Coast Kids, Moonlight Theatre, Escondido Center for The Arts, J Company, and Star Theatre Productions. Students also are involved with Classical, Choral, Gospel, Pop and Rock performing. Along with these venues, students perform for talent shows at their schools, sing in bands, and perform locally at thei
r favorite venues. Many of my students have gone on to sing professionally and I currently teach Artists with ongoing careers.

My motto is learn to sing the "Easy, Natural Way". I teach the very best techniques, so vocalizing is not strained or difficult. My main focus is on teaching good "placement" of the sound, using the best ways to secure breath support and control, as well as good stage presence. Dealing with stage fright is always addressed, whether the singer wants to sing just for themselves, or audition for Musical Theatre productions. Styles range from pop to rock and opera.
I teach students of ALL AGES and work with every style or genre of music. Having spearheaded the Music program at the local YMCA has been a special treat in my teaching career!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I teach using a piano for learning vocal exercises and good techniques. I also have an acoustic Guitar that I use to teach my students how to play and learn good finger picking and strumming techniques. Using a computer is always employed, to pull up songs on YouTube, so students can choose what they would like to work on. Karaoke versions are used as well, for further training purposes.

*** Travel Equipment ***
When I teach at a student's home, I bring my Guitar with me, if they're studying this instrument. It is helpful for a student to have a piano or keyboard for me to teach voice, but I do have a keyboard I can bring if none is available. Having a computer close by is very helpful, to get the most out of the lesson as is possible.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in helping people who have created possible "bad habits" in their singing techniques. "Placement" and breathing, or "support", are of key importance. When good techniques are used, just about anyone can learn to sing beautifully. I also work with all ages, having background with Children, as well as teens, middle age, and elderly vocalists. Singing is universal, so every ethnicity is included in my student roster. If someone wants to learn to play the acoustic Guitar, this is always a plus, to accompany ones-self, or to focus on the instrument on it's own. Singing and playing should be "easy" and this is the approach I take in teaching.

In search of helping our 10 year old son build some self-confidence we sought out clarinet lessons this summer. He started playing in school last year, and it was something our reluctant son liked "enough" to want to build up some competency. Joshua has been amazing! He finds just the right amount of challenge to encourage my son to practice, but not get discouraged. My son looks forward to his lesson each week and told me that he isn't even sure he wants to switch to saxophone next year because he is having so much fun playing the clarinet. Joshua is amazing with children, and has spent time getting to know our kiddo and find out what will work best for him. Patient, calm, and inspiring--very talented instructor.

Joshua Blatman is a fantastic music teacher. He has a great resume, is experienced in a variety of instruments, and a solid background in teaching.

I whole-heartedly recommend Joshua for anyone of any age and any skill level who wants to enrich their life learning guitar. Junewon has been performing very actively nationally and internationally. He was a finalist of Wilson Center Guitar Competition in 2016. As a leader of ‘June Trio’, awarded Research Enhancement Funds from Michigan State University, he performed in Bucharest, Romania with an invitation for a semi-finalist of International Bucharest Jazz Competition 2015. In 2014, he also played at National Academy For the Performing Arts in Trinidad and Tobago.
While he was pursuing his Master of Music Degree in Jazz Studies at Michigan State University, he served as a Teaching Assistant, and he was a member of Bebop-Spartan, the Jazz Orchestra I, directed by Rodney Whitaker. He played and recorded worldly renowned jazz musicians, such as Joe Hunt, Christian McBride, Jeff Hamilton, Antonio Hart, Jon Faddis, Mark Turner, Ben Street, and Peter Bernstein to
name a few.
Ever since he started to form his own group to play for the public, trio has been his most favorite ensemble. He played with his trio many times at different venue in Boston, while he was attending Berklee College of Music. Also he was a featured jazz artist at Club Bohemia, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
As a sideman, he played and recorded many times in Boston, Lansing as well as South Korea. When MSU Spartan Jazz Trombone Group was a winner of ITA, Winding Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competition in 2014 he was the rhythm section.
Junewon is not only fascinated by jazz guitar playing but also jazz harmony, arranging, and composing. “Isn’t It Love”, one of his composition has been released by recording of New York City based jazz guitarist, Peter Bernstein in 2012.
Currently, he plays guitar with Shekinah Worship Band every Sunday at Sa-Rang Comunity Church in Anaheim, CA, while he is working on his debut album by composing, arranging, and rehearsing with his trio.
