Whatever your goals are, I'll help you get there.

About Paul
I have played the guitar for twenty years and have studied a wide variety of music including jazz, classical, folk, blues and rock. I’m skilled in acoustic, electric and classical styles of the guitar. I have an open mind about music and can appreciate any style or type. I have a firm background on music theory, so I am able to explain what I am teaching. I excelled in all my classes in college, music and Gen Eds, with a GPA over 3.75. I also have experience in teaching guitar or bass to students ranging from the ages of six to sixty six. I enjoy taking what I have learned and passing it on to someone else to experience. I believe this is one way you can leave your mark in music. I believe the experience I have playing in bands, and learning songs with my ability of having relative pitch will make my students improve quicker. I am a
lso a very skilled sight reader and can recognize key signatures and musical notation. I’ve also been playing electric bass guitar for 13 years now and have the same skill set as my guitar playing. In fact I am hired to perform more often as a bassist than a guitarist.
I went to Columbia College between 2000-2003 and I completed a Bachelor Arts in Music, Concentration: Instrument Performance.
I also went to Harper College between 1997-2000 and I completed an Associates in Fine Arts of Music.

Paul has been teaching guitar to my two sons (17 and 11) since January and they are both very happy with his lessons and his teaching style. They look forward to their lesson and trust him completely, because my sons are starting to see that following Paul's instructions is producing good results. In particular, my sons appreciate Paul's patience and his ability to demonstrate clearly all the necessary steps to improve their playing ability. Paul is very good to adjust his teaching to the needs of his students and, as a fellow teacher myself, I think that is a fundamental characteristic of any good teacher. In conclusion, I feel very confident to recommend Paul, if you are looking for an experienced, patient and very attentive guitar teacher.

I've been playing guitar for a number of years but wanted some new techniques and structure. Paul is great at tailoring the lesson to my skill and focusing on the areas I can use help in like scales and music theory. So far so good!

The actual performance of a song is a skill in and of itself. I've taken acting classes, performed in musical theater shows and operas, and sung in venues such as Carnegie Hall. I pride myself on having the ability to successfully marry the singing with the acting. It's not easy to do, but it can be done! We'll also discuss issues such as performance anxiety and how to audition like a pro.

About Kimberly
I have taught voice lessons for about 10 years to children and adults of all ages, abilities, and musical tastes. I received my Master of Music degree in Voice Performance from Florida State University, and a degree in English from Knox College. Most recently, I sang as a soprano soloist at Carnegie Hall, as part of a performance of Haydn's "Lord Nelson Mass."

Students have come to me to improve their singing in many different styles, from pop music to musical theater to classical. I have taught experienced musicians as well as people who have never taken a lesson before.

Whether you're looking to improve your karaoke chops, prepare a solo piece for church, or just try something fun and different, I would encourage you to give voice lessons a shot. I truly enjoy teaching and would love to help you achieve your individual vocal goal
s!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a very patient teacher. I use various teaching methods and tailor each lesson to the individual needs of the student. We discuss breath management, the release of unwanted tension, good performance practices, as well as diction and general musical concepts. Studying with me will remind you that singing should be fun, and will boost your confidence and skill level.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My living room studio has a piano and seating for parents who wish to sit in on the lesson. There's also a table in the adjacent kitchen where younger siblings can do homework. Please bring a notebook or paper to take notes, as well as recording equipment if you wish to record the lesson.

Classical voice is my specialty, but I have worked with students on everything from Metallica to Mozart.

Both of my daughters, one of which has Asperger's, really enjoyed taking singing lessons with Kimberly over the past one and one-half years, and I would highly recommend her. They each received individualized lessons plus were provided immediate feedback and encouragement. I never heard a "do I have to go" when it came time for their lessons which says allot, especially in the summer when I often hear this about other things.

Excited for more lessons

I still have more questions but in my 3 lessons so far with Kim she has had all the answers. She has provided a lot of good technique and exercises for my daily regimen and I have had people tell me that my singing sounds a lot better at shows I have done since. I know that it is because of what I've gone over with Kim.

I am a 50-something-year-old business executive who began taking beginner piano lessons with Susan Merdinger almost 5 years ago.

Now, I am performing Chopin Nocturnes and Preludes and cherished works by Mozart and Beethoven to name just a few.

My Mom let me quit piano lessons in 1967 when I was growing up on the Southside of Chicago. I spent the next 45 years regretting it.

Now, as my piano teacher, Susan is inspiring me to make up for lost time.

At the end of each year, I am amazed at being able to play pieces I couldn’t have imagined performing 12 months earlier. This satisfying achievement comes only because of Susan’s character and competence as a teacher and her passion and enthusiasm to motivate me to practice 1 to 2 hours every day.

Susan is patient while maintaining very high standards with a commitment to excellence. She celebrates the progress of all her students to whom she is dedicated. While waiting for my lesson to begin, I have watched in amazement as she interacts with a full studio of very diverse students, young and old, boys and girls, beginners and advanced, even handicapped blind and autistic students. I’ve watched as she’s brought smiles to all her students after their recitals and audiences after her own concerts.

And Susan is one of the smartest persons I know who is expanding my horizons of the classical repertoire I play and appreciation of the classical music I listen to. There is a special pride to see your piano teacher perform solo or with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at historic venues in Chicago or New York City.

I am a busy executive, but my piano lesson is the highlight of the week, even if that entails a 90-minute battle in Chicagoland rush hour traffic to get to my lesson.

That’s because my life is richer with the music Susan imparts.

I can’t recommend her strongly enough.

Let me help you develop your REAL VOICE and hone your skills as a performer.

About Michelle Kei
Michelle Kei I., a soprano of Japanese and American heritage, "uses her strong dramatic soprano to slice through the orchestra" in a varied repertoire that encompasses Verismo to Broadway. Possessing a captivating stage presence and praised as "superb," "gifted," and a "constant breakaway from the rest of the vocal pack," she has entertained audiences on stages around the world.

Those are the first two sentences of my professional biography. I thought I'd use them to get the ball rolling.

Ever since I can remember, I've always been a performer. I come from a very musical family. I was always singing! I sang at home, in church, in show-choir and musicals at school - basically anywhere I could find an audience!

When I decided to go to college to study music, I chose the prestigious School of Music at Indiana University. I wanted to
sing Broadway, but my father encouraged me to study classical singing first, so I'd have the foundations for a bulletproof technique that could endure a long and demanding career. I'm so glad that he did!

Who would have thought that I would learn to LOVE opera?!? It had everything that Broadway did, and so much more! Plus, I learned to fill a theater with the sound of my voice and soar over the orchestra WITHOUT A MICROPHONE!!!

Would you like to learn how to do that? I can show you how.

Let me help you find your REAL VOICE!!!

What you can expect from me:

- I will provide a supportive and effective work environment.

- I will make recommendations on repertoire based upon your goals

- I will provide you with an individualized regimen of study based upon your strengths and development, not a standardized format of study.

What I expect from you:

- Learn the musical selections we choose. Your lesson time should be used for improving your technique, not learning your music.

- Leave your outside life at the door. It will be waiting for you when you leave.

- Enjoy the process. Experiment. If it doesn't work, try something else. Take constructive criticism as an opportunity for improvement, not as a personal attack.

- Commit yourself fully! Be engaged. The benefit you receive is equal to the work you put into the process.

Your performance is just that. YOUR performance. Without question, the best way to ramp up your performance level is to make it your own. But how? That's something we'll work on at length. Are there gimmicks and showy things one can do to add to it? Certainly. But you can overdo it and ruin your show. We'll discuss that, too. We'll look at why introverts can be more natural performers and how to use your innate personality traits to your advantage.

About Phil
I've taught both privately and in the classroom (in schools from Pre-K to college, and through workshops), and have been a working musician and teacher for more than 25 years. I have a degree in music from Columbia College Chicago (Summa Cum Laude). My students have included everyone from absolute beginners to working professionals like myself. Many of my beginner students have also gone on to careers in music.

My approach in private instruction involves tailoring the lessons to the specific needs of each student, while making sure that he/she has the knowledge and technique to succeed in their creative endeavors. Whether it's a hobby or a potential career, I leave nothing out. You will learn the entire instrument. In cases where a student works in more than one subject, one session can typically be applied to all/both of them. I striv
e to help every student find their own creative voice, while building the skill sets required to work in any style of music.

As a writer, I've written for everything from music publications to LinkedIn, and have an award-winning nonfiction book that chronicles my journey as an independent musician.

As an entrepreneur, I've had several non-music businesses on the side over the years, and have weathered every twist and turn of the music industry for more than 30 years. My indie record label, founded in 1994, is breaking new ground by empowering artists to have a hand in their own business success while never compromising their art.

As a public speaker, I started speaking in church at age 9. I have spoken to audiences large and small about everything from music education and the music business, to dealing with addiction, to the teachings of engaged Buddhism.

Please feel free to contact me with the "Ask Phil a Question" button on my profile here. This can include questions about my method, or regarding days and times for lessons. What you see in my availability here is based on my schedule away from TakeLessons. I have students elsewhere and perform shows regularly. I may have additional times available and tend to have some flexibility. I teach worldwide online. Just ask.

As soon as you're ready to book lessons, you can use the Green Button after selecting your area of study, day and time. I will receive a notification that you've signed up. I will then confirm with you and send a questionnaire regarding your lesson needs within 48 hours.

Thanks for your interest.

I look forward to working with you!

I can help any student achieve better stage presence and performance. I have researched MPA (music performance anxiety) and have personally overcome many challenges as a performing artist! With lessons, you can learn to increase your confidence and learn how to prepare for and deliver your best performances.

About Aviva
I am a professional violinist and teacher with 20 years of playing, and almost 10 years of teaching experience. This July, I received my Master's degree in violin performance from the Royal College of Music, the #1 performing arts conservatory in Europe and the UK.

I teach violin because it is my passion, because I love music, and because of the joy, confidence, and positive motivation my students experience over the course of their lessons. Every student is unique, and my approach tailors to the needs, questions, and interests of my students. Together, we develop strong technique, healthy posture and hand positions, a great understanding of music theory, quick note-reading and sight-reading skills, and a variety of tools to play beautifully and expressively.

In addition to my education, my teaching draws on extensive experience i
n orchestras, chamber groups, and as a soloist, across many U.S. states and abroad. I was assistant concertmaster of the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra in London, won state and national competitions in chamber music, and performed for live broadcast on Chicago's classical radio 98.7 WFMT as well as National Public Radio's program, "From the Top."

Viva Aviva!

I am an adult student that is new to the violin but I do play a number of other instruments.

Aviva is an exceptional instructor. So patient and so proficient. Aviava seems to have an innnate ability to know just when to be "picky" and when to perhaps "let a few mistakes" slide. The result . . . I am making consistent progress and know exactly where to focus my time and attention.

Aviva is a gentle but effective motivator and, as such, I alway look so forward to my weekly lesson - and I am definately inclined to work hard so as to try to "please" my teacher.

I have become all but obsessed with all things violin, and much of that is directly attributable to this delightful and talented maestro!

Please do not hesitate to work with her. I can absolutely promise you that you will be glad you did.
