Faith is fantastic! Just in a few lessons, I've improved my tone and worked on my weak vibrato and she even did research on helping me decide on a new flute. She is super professional, fun, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend her!!

Amazing teacher, great experience working with her. Particularly skilled over the virtual format with an amazing ear for sound and ability to provide direction.

I like how Ms. Wasson takes the time to thoroughly explain each piece that we learn such as the history of the composer and the music theory involved in each piece. She is also a very patient teacher who answers all of my questions and helps me work through any parts of the lesson that I find difficult.

As a composer, I have a strong background and love for music theory. I believe that learning theory will complement and inform your music-making and help you understand how music is put together. ~

My approach involves developing both written and aural skills while finding practical applications for these abilities by analyzing pieces that you are performing and exploring how theoretical knowledge can make you a better performer.

About Michael

Hello I'm Michael! I am a violinist and composer with a diverse skill set and 17 years of experience. I learn and grow as I pass on my knowledge and constantly find ways to better serve my students and help them achieve their goals.

I have been a student of Michael’s for approximately 7 months. My only previous experience with violin had been one year in elementary school band class and 8 months with a private teacher. When my private teacher’s lesson schedule changed, I was introduced to Michael and was greatly impressed by his skill level and teaching style. I have learned so much more than I had expected in each lesson, like how to self-tune, use a metronome, shift, and various other techniques. Michael constantly offers feedback on how I can execute techniques better, and I feel that this helps me to learn more effectively. He is always challenging me by giving me harder pieces and scales. I have even been told by my high school orchestra conductor that I have improved so much and she is constantly surprised by how fast I am learning. I highly recommend having Michael as a teacher for anyone looking to learn how to play the violin.

Michael is very talented and he is a great instructor. He explains the techniques really well. Very professional and supportive. I highly recommend him!

Music Theory is essential for every well-rounded musician. A musician should know why something sounds good. Simple theory includes note names, reading music, melody, and rhythm. Complex theory includes how extended chord structures relate to each other, Serialism, and harmonization.

Vince first encountered music theory when he began playing trumpet and reading music. He learned the basics; notes, scales, triads, key signatures, and time signatures. Later (especially when he first studied guitar and piano), Vince studied intervals, exotic scales, and chord progressions. At college and graduate school, he formally studied advanced music theory as applied to tonal harmony, twentieth century music, and jazz.

Often, theories are built upon other theories and thus support each other. Vince teaches the basics up to more advanced theoretical concepts - to any musician regardless of instrument - how they can be successfully applied in practice.

About Vince

Vince privately teaches trumpet, guitar, electric bass guitar, arranging, composition, music theory, ear training, and improvisation to students of all ages and levels. “Basically he’s the go-to cross-genre horn-blowing utility man of the Philly scene” (John Vettese, WXPN’s The Key). Vinc

"I have been taking lessons with Jimmy for 3 years and could not ask for a better teacher. He makes my interest grow and has a wealth of knowledge and the patience to share it. He challenges me regularly. I only wish I had found him sooner as previous instructors never had the flexibility or patience that Jimmy has.
Learning in such a relaxed environment has worked very well for me. My son has since started lessons with Jimmy as well and it has become a great experience for both of us."

His style of teaching enables students to learn and get to know a wide variety of guitar aspects very quickly. He breaks up lessons into short but consumable modules while at the same time giving something concrete to start playing and get going from the word go whether you are a beginner or not. Why You Should Learn (At Least a Little) Music Theory

One of the most common weaknesses for amateur musicians is a lack of music theory knowledge. Many people assume that learning theory is difficult (it isn’t) that it has no practical purpose (it does), or even that it will actively make them worse at making music (quite the opposite). I’m here to convince you that learning a little about how music works is one of the most important skills you can develop and should absolutely be part of your daily practice routine. Here are five reasons w …

Understanding Music Theory Through Colors

Struggling to understand a music theory concept? Sometimes, all it takes is a tweak to the way material is taught for a student to really grasp it. Here, Pittsburgh voice teacher Jennifer V. reveals her unique ROYGBIV method...   Has your child ever come home in tears because they just couldn’t master a skill they learned in school? You listen, wipe their tears and tell them “Tomorrow is a new day,” and “I know you can do it!” But the next day he or she comes home upset about th …

How to Change the Key of a Song With and Without a Computer

What Does it Mean to Change a Key? To change a song’s “key” means to shift the whole musical system to a higher or lower position. This process is called “transposition.” Performers often need transpose a song to better fit their voices. That way, a performer with a naturally lower singing voice (like myself) will be able to more comfortably sing a song that was originally written for someone with a naturally higher voice. Or vice versa.  For singers, transposition feels fairly …
