He is a very patient teacher. And he's very flexible on his schedule by moving our schedule to an earlier time because we had a prior engagement in the afternoon. And most of all, my daughter now knows the basics and we will most likely contact him again in case we decide to continue guitar lessons.

I am a private woodwind instructor and professional freelance musician. My main instrument is saxophone and I double on flute, teaching both with the addition of beginner to intermediate clarinet. I have a Masters in Jazz Studies from Manhattan School of Music and BA in Classical and Jazz Performance from Michigan State University. I am experienced in many different genres of music and have performed and recorded with many jazz, latin, funk, soul, fusion, R&B, pop, and classical ensembles.

Kevin has been my teacher for 3 years. We meet once a week. Kevin is a gifted teacher (and a great musician). He only corrects a mistake once I've reached the level when I can fix it. This way I have been making progress week after week, and it feels good.

Kevin is a wonderful teacher. My daughter started saxophone lessons with him at the beginning of the summer and she adores him. He's funny, patient, encouraging and thoughtful. We couldn't ask for a better sax teacher! Kevin also taught a master class at my older son's middle school and he was fantastic. I highly recommend him!

About Kimberly
I grew up in a household of 9 where music was always center stage. We would sing as a family in different venues and were often called the VonTrapp family. I have enjoyed singing and performing from a young age. I began studying flute at age 8, after scoring highest in the harmony listening exam and began formal violin lessons at the age of 9. I studied all genres including, fiddle, classical, musical theater and 20th century. I have continued to study violin since then and have performed in many orchestras and small groups, such as Honor Orchestra, the Paradise Symphony, the Yuba College Orchestra, Yuba-Sutter Oratorio Society Orchestra and more. I have been concert master and first stand in many of these. I have also soloed in many and have been the first violinist in quartets for countless weddings and other events. I have also played
in numerous pit orchestras for musicals.
I have been in choirs and soloing since I can remember. I have performed and soloed in choirs such as the Yuba-Sutter Oratorio Society, CSUS Chamber Choir, the CSUS Women's Choir and more. I have toured to Victoria, Montreal, Ottowa, Oregon and Washington. I have also been in opera productions such as The Magic Flute, Peleas and Melisande and Die Fledermaus (The Bat) with CSUS Opera. I am a recent recipient of the Saturday Club Scholarship, a prestigious award, and have won many competitions (some repeatedly) both vocally and with violin, such as the Tri-County Competition, Young Artist Competitions, and the California Soloist and Ensemble Competitions. Additionally, I have performed musical theater repertoire and have performed as lead in musicals such as Beauty and the Beast and Into the Woods. I have also soloed repeatedly with the Yuba College jazz band and at churches all around.
I have earned my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from CSU Sacramento. I have my Associates Degrees in both Music and Early Childhood Education from Yuba College. Additionally, I have obtained my certificate of completion of training from Music Together, an organization which trains teachers to teach Basic Music Competence (both in tonality and meter), and am currently teaching this curriculum.
I have been teaching music privately for over ten years to all ages, genders and abilities. Additionally, I have taught ages 0-5 years in a preschool setting for 7 years and am extremely familiar with developmentally appropriate practices for both preschool and school age, as I am a site supervisor at a child development center with a preschool and after school program. I have had many adult students as well and encourage adults to enrich their lives with music at any age! Additionally, I have experience teaching parent child classes and am familiar with how to teach to the particular needs of each family and student.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have been teaching since 2002 and have loved every minute of it! I teach all ages. I tailor my style of teaching to each student's goals and to what works for you. If you want to learn Taylor Swift music, I won't be giving you arias. On the other hand, if you wish to study classically, I have repertoire appropriate for you. I teach fiddle, classical, orchestral, 20th century and more for violin students and have experience with jazz, classical, musical theater, pop, religious, spiritual, choral, 20th century and more vocally.
For violin students, I use the Suzuki method as a pushing off point, a tried and true method used in many countries across the world, though I have other repertoire including fiddle, orchestra, small ensemble, solo, concertos, Christmas, and more. For vocalist, I start with the book, Adventures in Singing. I also have warm ups and exercises to keep you vocally healthy. I will teach you anything you want to learn! I also teach how to read music, theory and harmony, depending on your interest and tailored to your current skill level.
I am encouraging and knowledgeable. I will meet you at your current level, be that beginner, intermediate, or advanced. My students can look forward to being encouraged and growing through their time with me. I don't have preset ideas about where you should be in 3-6 months, nor do I have a one size fits all teaching style. Instead, I will work with you individually so that you will become the best musician you can be, meet your goals, and increase your enjoyment and appreciation for music.

Dr. Carl S. will be teaching at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical beginning August 2017. His duties include graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class. Prior to working at OSU, Carl was Instructor of Jazz and Saxophone at South Dakota State University from 2014-2017. He is currently a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Jazz Education Network, Music Teachers National Association, treasurer of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and an Honorary Member of Tau Beta Sigma. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, assisting with the KU Jazz Festival, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen,Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr.,Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Carl's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. He has had additional instruction in lessons and masterclasses from Gary Foster, Dr. Joseph Murphy, Dr. Michael Cox, Bob Sheppard, Johnny Salinas, Dr. Kimberly Goddard Loeffert, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel, Dr. Jonathan Nichol, Dr. Griffin Campbell, Dr. James Laughlin, and Dr. David Dees. ​Carl lives in Brookings, South Dakota. He enjoys recording several instruments in his home studio and composing new music. As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Carl performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Carl directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

​Dr. Carl is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl will be performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale.

I hold a Bachelor Degree in Music Composition and Theory from Pacific Lutheran University and a Masters Degree in Music Education from Boston University. I have taught through university level and am current Assistant Professor of Music at Pierce College, near Tacoma, Washington. I have been asked to do guest lecturing at Seattle University in the art of Film Score, where I have studied with an Emmy-winning composer.

Although I was forced to select a subject of Acoustic Guitar on the review form, my children and I have also taken lessons with Mel Parker on every subject in the pick list plus a few more. Theory, composition, recording. Improvisation techniques, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, banjo, violin, bass, mandolin, ear training, techniques applied to all music genre's, group and solo performance techniques, ETC! The main point here is that as an accomplished and talented musician, Mel Parker is fluent in the music industry and very skilled at teaching all skill levels, from beginner to pro. He can teach very rigid focused lessons or he can shift and adjust the lesson instantly to meet the needs of the student. My children have been able to explore and experiment different instruments, genre's and other areas of the music industry as their interests grew and changed over the years. They have had many changes in their interests but the one constant has been the TEACHER! It is wonderful to be able to have 1 teacher adjust his education for the ever changing and growing needs of my family. Both of my children are now very accomplished award winning performers and we all agree that Mel Parker has been/is the primary influencer in their accomplishments.

I received A's in all of my music theory courses in college, including Diatonic Harmony, Chromatic Harmony, Advanced Harmony, Modern Harmony and Orchestration. While in college, I tutored each of those classes every semester, and I never had a student get below a B-.

Hello! My name is Steph and I can't wait to hear you play! I will absolutely enjoy teaching you regardless of your age or playing ability. :)

Beginner students: We will mostly work on pieces out of Kathy Blocki's flute method books as well as exercises composed by myself to make sure your fundamentals are solid from the beginning. Plan on learning new notes and rhythms each lesson as well as having scale and playing assignments. You will learn a lot each week while having a super awesome time :)

Intermediate students: We will be working on honing the fundamentals (tone, technique, articulation) through various etudes and intermediate solo pieces, depending on playing level. Vibrato will be introduced as well as phrasing, breathing, and everyone's favorite: intonation! Weekly assignments will include memorizing scales and preparing a
ll pieces covered in lessons. Prepare to take notes and laugh frequently at my jokes!

Early-Advanced students: We will learn about body awareness and work on playing without tension. We will work on developing tone colors (warm, sweet, bright, hollow, etc.), developing technique through daily exercises, as well as further developing the fundamentals. We will work on repertoire for your auditions, more advanced solo pieces, etudes, and technical exercises. Weekly assignments will include practicing at least 45 minutes per day to have material fully prepared for the lesson. You will get really good at taking notes!

Always remember: You will get out of lessons what you put into them! The magic always happens during practice. The more you practice, the more I am able to teach you, and the better you will play!

A little bit about myself, I recently graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors from Bloomsburg University with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Music, where I focused on flute performance. While at Bloomsburg, I taught private lessons to college-age students who were beginners to intermediate flutists. I have studied many major classical works as well as modern works with extended techniques. I was principal chair of Bloomsburg University's Wind Ensemble and Concert Band for three years, and I was actively involved in our New Music Ensemble. I would love to help you improve your playing and I truly can't wait to teach you :)

Ms. Rada Culciar is a well educated and very professional instructor. Her teaching approach is organized and easy to follow. I have made wonderful progress under Ms. Culciar's instruction. I would encourage anyone who would like to study the violin (or any other subject of study) to take lessons with Ms. Rada Culciar.

A conservatory trained pianist, Evelyn makes piano playing a rewarding experience. It is in her firm belief that anyone can play the piano, but to play it well requires proper guidance in both fundamentals and artistry.

In addition to piano, she also teaches music theory and aural musicianship. She has guided many students through ABRSM, Certificate of Merit (MTAC) and AP Music Theory.

Evelyn is a conservatory-trained classical pianist, who enjoys working with students of all levels and ages. Born in Korea and raised in the United States, Evelyn has placed at numerous piano competitions, and has performed throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe.

Evelyn is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Piano Performance at the University of Southern California. She previously studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Eastman School of Music, and her teachers include Bernadene Blaha, Yoshikazu Nagai, and Enrico Elisi.

I played piano for 13 years, from ages 5 to 18, and then just stopped when I went away to college. I had aptitude for the instrument but did not have the discipline to sit down and practice. Fast forward 17 years, and I get intimidated just looking at a piano! I realized if I ever wanted to play again I'd have to find an instructor. It was so easy to find Evelyn via Red Pelican Music, and I started classes right away. It was a little frustrating to start from square one, but I know I really had to (I'd forgotten so much!). Evelyn was always encouraging and knew exactly what I needed to hear and learn. She also knew just when to introduce actual classical pieces instead of having me focus on the beginner books with short pieces and music theory. I love working with her and have made so much progress in the <6 months we have been working together. I would highly recommend her to any beginner or to someone re-starting as a beginner. And, of course, she's a highly accomplished pianist, so any skilled pianists looking for instruction would benefit from her teaching.
