About Michael
Michael has worked with kids for 10 years in schools and arts programs to find fun and their best self through performance. He has taught orchestra, chamber music, jazz band and music theory in the public schools, while performing in local ensembles in and around the city. He also has studied drama, voice and movement and believes all these skills help in expressing yourself--no matter what pieces you want to play!

In addition to working with students K-12, he also loves working with adults. I try to provide a nurturing atmosphere for someone trying revive or discover previously hidden musical interests!

*** Lesson Details ***
We begin with what we love. The student usually chooses one of his or her favorite songs to interpret. Later, we add music, usually from the classical or jazz fields, that build our skills and help us f
eel successful. All technique is based on real music. Learning scales, keys and music theory become part of the music. By the end of 6 months, we will have a "repertoire" of several songs that express our best self!

I'm a senior citizen that still works. I played some other instruments when I was younger and always wanted to play piano and Michael has motivated me to continue to learn and fit my practice into my work schedule. Anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument should look no further then Michael.

Violin, viola instructor, performing art.
Classical music. Mostly traditional Russian method of violin teaching, also Suzuki.

About Larisa
Began violin lessons at age 8.
At age 15 was accepted into the elite program at the School of Music in Odessa, Ukraine.
Continued on to one of the premier music Universities in the world: Kiev State Conservatory, where I received a Masters degree in Teaching and Performing arts.
Throughout my higher education I have held Violin Instructor positions first at the Kiev Music School and then at the Conservatory.

My Professional Career in Ukraine and USA includes performance with numerous symphony and chamber groups, such as Kiev Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera, San Jose Symphony.
I am passionate and dedicated to my Art which is reflected in my teaching style and in the results my students consistently achieve.
My ultimate goal as an instructor
is to convey to my students the beauty of making music. I define success to be the ability to see the joy that playing for yourself and others brings to you and your audience.

*** Lesson Details ***
My Method and Goals:

Proper technique is the key to producing extraordinary sound and growing as a violist. I ensure that my students gain solid understanding of these fundamentals first and foremost.
A significant part of the first few lessons will be devoted to developing proper posture and hold of the instrument. A good violinist must be relaxed to prevent muscle tension and produce those rich, spellbinding notes. Soon the instrument begins to feel like an extension of the hands, and students begin to progress much quicker, seeing (and hearing) surprising results.
I can follow the Suzuki method if requested, but much prefer principles of the Russian School. I will be happy to discuss the benefits of each with you.

*** Studio Equipment ***
on ground floor of townhouse w/ seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student has to have his own instrument. I can provide the music sheets

*** Specialties ***
Classical music. Mostly traditional Russian method of violin teaching, also Suzuki.

A Great Violin Teacher

My daughter has been taking lessons with Larisa for three years and has made incredible progress. She began as a viola player and Larisa gave her lessons on that instrument as well. She was very helpful in making the transition to violin. Larisa works on technique as well as musicality so that the student develops into a well rounded musician. Larisa is the type of teacher who communicates clearly so that the student is able to immediately grasp the new concepts. She is a wonderful violinist and is able to demonstrate by playing beautifully as well as explaining. Larisa is extremely knowledgeable about the different periods of music and composers and shares this in her teaching. She has an easygoing personality and my daughter immediately connected with her. I would highly recommend Larisa for your student.

*** Lesson Details ***

Always depending on the student's goals of course, I like to involve personal creativity into my lessons. From figuring out well known tunes, to eventually writing melodies, or at least coming up with the basis and foundation to a piece. I have learned that writing music on your instrument, in conjunction with learning to play the classics, opens up a vast array of musical knowledge and musical creativity. Everything depends upon what the student wants out of their lessons though.

I do enforce weekly homework in the form of scales, warm-ups, etudes, and selected works. All varying upon playing level, and progressing differently from student to student. Recitals are offered at local coffee shops and community churches. The student will have a choice on whether to play solo, with piano accompaniment, guitar accompaniment, or duet music for recitals.

After the first 6 months, the student should be able to comprehend most basic music theory, from note names and where they sit on the fingerboard, to basic scales, time signatures, and basic rhythms in order to effectively sight-read sheet music. The student will have developed a proper bow hold, and will be able to demonstrate a smooth and straight bowing pattern to obtain great tone!

Every student grows at a completely different rate, and this is what is expected of the average student.

*** Specialties ***
For my beginning students I use a combination of the Suzuki Method, All for Strings or Essential Elements, and Harvey Whistler's Scales in First Position.

Materials used for advanced students varies.

This instrument holds true to so much that occurs naturally in nature. The science behind the instrument is so fascinating, and I love to teach with that thought in mind!

THERE IS A REACTION TO EVERY ACTION YOU MAKE!

We could not have asked for a better violin instructor for our 7-year-old daughter. Autumn is exactly what she needed: someone engaging, flexible, creative, and most of all fun! Obviously she is tremendously skilled and a master of her craft, but this does not always make a great teacher. But Autumn is a great teacher, which makes her an absolute gift and inspiration! We are so lucky to have found her! Thanks, Autumn!!!

Autumn is encouraging and enthusiastic and helpful and fun. I am an adult and an experienced violinist who stopped playing for 20 years. I am just getting back into it and am delighted to find that I haven't forgotten how to read music and play, but I am really wanting to improve my sound. Autumn is happy to work on just what I want and need. I don't believe I could have found a better instructor for me.

I went into banjo lessons not knowing if I could master the instrument or not, being nearly 70 years old. While by no means a master (and never going to be), I have learned so much from Sam and he has shown such patience with me. I often leave my lessons wondering how he ever puts up with me - but he does. His encourgement, laid-back style, expertise and knowledge of music (plus theory) and the banjo is impressive. His good nature makes my lessons so much more pleasant. I would say Sam is a a great teacher for both a beginner or an accomplished musician or in between. He likes to talk and demonstrate (nice and slowly if requested) so I would recommend hour-long lessons at first.

My violin and viola students study classical Russian technique--used by the best players in history. It involves efficient use of the body, both to avoid injury when playing and also to get the best possible sound from the instrument. Students progress in technique, musicality, and music theory.

About Elana
Hello,

My name is Elana. I'm a professional violinist and enjoy teaching students of all ages and levels. My students have ranged from ages 4-64. Their goals have ranged from pure enjoyment to those considering a career in music. My goal is to help each student play to the best of their abilities and for them to enjoy the lessons. Violin is my passion, which comes through in my enthusiasm during lessons. I am gentle and patient but also honest and very particular about what to look for when practicing.

I take great pride in teaching the Russian method. Not only is the technique I teach used by the best violinists of all time, it also emphasizes efficient and correct use of the body to avoid injury and develop a tone with richness and projection.

What I look for in a student is a commitment to practicing every day. It's an
adjustment in the beginning for many, but once established simply becomes part of the day, like brushing your teeth. Over time, students hear improvements from practicing consistently and this creates a very positive experience. The violin becomes a source of joy and confidence.

Violin lessons help develop skills such as coordination and focus at the highest level, persistence, confidence, creativity, patience, and many other "life" skills whose benefits extend far beyond music lessons. Many people who achieve success in a career outside music later in life often credit their music lessons as having been key in that process.

As far as my musical background, I received my music degree from Rutgers University, where I was a recipient of the Marryott Music Scholarship. Upon graduation I freelanced as a violinist in the NYC metro area. My major teachers include Neil Weintrob and Lewis Kaplan.

As a teacher I have 20 years of experience. I've worked in various programs and currently teach violin and viola lessons at a local private school, in addition to running a private studio of violin and piano students. My violin students have been concertmaster, principal players, and section players in orchestras such as All-County, Region I, and NY Youth Symphony.

Feel free to contact me with any additional questions you may have. I look forward to working with you.

Students can expect a passionate, caring teacher who will work to help them achieve their violin goals. My goal is introduce students to the joy that a violin can bring and inspire a lifetime love.

About Lisa C.
After playing the violin for over 20 years, Lisa was inspired to share the gift of music with others by her teacher, Susanna Sonnenberg. Lisa is a member of the American String Teacher’s Association, and has attended the 2017 ASTA National Conference. She currently performs with the Edgewood Symphony Orchestra. Lisa has played in recitals, the Chartiers Valley High School Orchestra, and was accepted to the 2006 PMEA District Orchestra. She has studied with Larry Weiss, Linda Andersen, and others. Lisa can’t remember a time before she learned how to play the violin; it has brought her great joy. Her favorite piece to play is the Bach Double Concerto in D Minor.

At 8 years old, Lisa fell in love with the violin. Throughout school, she studied with private teachers and played with the school orchestra. At home, her dogs were a great audie
nce.

Lisa went on to study history at the University of Pittsburgh, and later earned her law degree from Duquesne. She never forgot her violin, though, and continued to play in her spare time.

Music adds beauty to the world, and finally, after years of keeping the violin to herself, Lisa decided to share her playing with others. Lisa teaches traditional, classical method. The method books she uses include: Essential Elements for Strings, Samuel Applebaum, and All for Strings, among others. She supplements the technical exercises with repertoire from the Suzuki series. Lisa enjoys playing all types of music, in addition to classical, and teaches these songs, as well. Additional music includes pop artists like Taylor Swift, classic rock, electronic music like Lindsey Stirling, celtic, folk, and just about any other type of music you can think of. As a teacher, Lisa strives to be positive and encouraging. She believes that music should be fun, so her main goal is to make sure her students are having a good time!
