Dr. Carl S. will be teaching at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical replacement beginning August 2017. He graduated from Harrah High School in 2002, earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 2008, and was a 5th-12th grade Head Band Director at Fairview Public schools. He is currently a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Jazz Education Network, Music Teachers National Association, treasurer of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and an Honorary Member of Tau Beta Sigma. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, assisting with the KU Jazz Festival, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen,Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr.,Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Carl's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl will be performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale.

20 years I've been including music theory in my lessons and many times giving private lessons just on the subject to Singers, Percussionists and instrumentalists outside of guitar. I have some fantastic sight singing books but I start with your memory, the melodies that have touched you. We explore your personal contact with music to find that you actually know the intervals, the building blocks of music. My understanding of chord function and harmonic colour gets clearly categorized and explained for the student so she/he can use for her/his self to develop a better ear and the right tools to analyze how any song works.

Billy N. has played Jazz, Brazilian and Classical music in the NYC area for the last 20 years. He has actively taught both finger-style and pick guitar for the last 20 years. He was on staff at the American Institute of Guitar for 11 years. His book on Brazilian Guitar is published by Alfred Music and currently available. He now offers online lessons via Skype as well as in his private studio. Playing credits include many museums and clubs in the NY area including Museum of Modern Art Museum of the City of NY and an extended stay at the Guggenheim museum in the Summer of 2000. Also he has been in the Brooklyn Museum concert series with his group Afinidades Bronx Libraries Brooklyn College and the Jewish Museum in trio and duo setting with great Percussionist Vanderlei Pereira. He has performed in Brazil as well most recently in the South
of Brazil,  receiving TV and radio coverage. He has also done workshops and performed at the Conservatory of the state of Pernambuco. In 2007 he gave a successful jazz workshop and concert in the city of Florianopolis Brazil. Billy has been awarded 3 prestigious composer's residencies 2006 - Yaddo and 2007 - The MacDowell Colony. He was featured on the PBS news hour during his residence at MacDowell. In 2008 he was awarded another MacDowell residency and followed this with a 3 hour appearance presenting his compositions live on WKCR Jazz Radio and another live radio appearance with band in 2010. Billy regularly plays in many venues around NY in Jazz trio settings as well as with Brazilian vocalists and instrumentalists. Most Recently his groups have been performing at the famed Cornelia Street Cafe in New York City. He also specializes in solo guitar and can double on percussion (Pandeiro) and Cavaquinho. Billy has completed two CD's of his original music and an EP of his original Choro music. He has a BFA in Jazz Performance from CCNY.

Billy really knows his stuff; the analysis of time at the beginning is superb: something I now use in my teaching. This is definitely for intermediate and higher guitarists, but the pieces are worth the effort to get right, and the accompanying CD shows you what you are aiming for. This is as good as my other Brazilian guitar book (by Nelson Faria) and much more compact and easier to follow. Highly recommended!

This book is essential homework for students of Brazilian guitar. It is one of the best resources out there, along with Nelson Faria's "The Brazilian Guitar Book." The original etudes are not only instructional, but are nice pieces in their own right. An excellent value.

I've taught all levels over 20 years both in NYC and Brazil. I work with the material that the student wants and also through recordings and charts introduce much music that the student might have been unfamiliar with. My lessons are catered to the individual. There is no obstacle anyone has that is too great to work through. My approach to rhythmic training has helped many. I have simple way of breaking down the guitar fingerboard which can used as a guide to learn harmony. I'll get you into the horizontal aspects of guitar, traveling across the neck, making music across one string as well, mastering the guitar in a small fret range - " vertical position playing".

I have been taking lessons with Billy since January 2015. I am a total beginner and I really think I have made the best choice ever to pick him as my teacher. Billy is an experienced guitar teacher and a professional player that knows great techniques for beginners. He has been teaching me basics of guitar in a smart way, and at each lesson I feel I learn something new and at the same time I can clearly see how much progress I have made since our first lesson. He has also been teaching me how to read music and tabs which proofed to be extremely useful every time I want to learn a new song by myself. Highly recommended!

I cannot recommend Billy enough. I studied jazz improvisation with Billy for three years, and later returned to study Brazilian guitar and Piedmont-style finger picking with him. I had been playing for more than twenty years when I started studying with him and he not only helped me improve my playing technically and creatively (on electric and nylon stringed guitars) but also expanded my knowledge of theory and helped me develop new approaches to composing and arranging. I am still working with the material he gave me and take lessons from him whenever my schedule allows.

I took Brazilian guitar lessons from Billy for several years. His method focuses on absorbing the many rhythms of Brazil and translating them from percussion instruments to the guitar. Much of his effort is devoted on achieving the elusive Brazilian swing, which non Brazilians need to learn. Billy is excellent in breaking down the rhythms and explaining them. He even has a book out on his method. He covers various Brazilian genres: choro, bossa nova, samba, baiao and more.
Billy also is an accomplished jazz, classical and flamenco guitarist with a thorough understanding of harmony and improvisation. He is very patient and has years of teaching and performance experience. You will be lucky to study with him!

My name is Chris B. and I've been playing music for most of my life.

The best lesson that I've personally learned is that a musician is never done learning. Once you start believing that you know everything there is to know about your instrument, or that your style of playing is superior to others, then you've stopped growing musically. Perhaps you excel in one area of your playing but need further development in another. Personally, I've also learned that I enjoy sharing my knowledge of music with others and exposing students to new techniques and musical concepts.

I strongly believe that these traits are the most important aspects of teaching music to others. No matter how advanced my playing skills might progress, I’ll always be able to relate to any type of student because I’m still learning something new everyday!

About Ryan
Woodwind specialist Ryan hails from Aurora, Colorado, and is based in the Denver/Boulder, CO area. He is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the University of Colorado, where he serves as the Graduate Teaching Assistant for the saxophone studio. He also holds a Master of Music Degree in Saxophone from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and graduated summa cum laude from Colorado State University with Bachelor’s Degrees in Music Performance and Education. An extremely in-demand private instructor, Ryan's students have been selected to principal chairs in such ensembles as the Colorado All-State Band and Jazz Band, Northern Kentucky Honor Band, Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble, and many more. Ryan's newest recording project, "Somewhere Between," will be released in early 2016. I whole-heartedly recommend Ryan as a private instructor. My middle school-aged son had enjoyed learning to play saxophone in his school band, but towards the end of his 1st year was getting bored by the slow pace. After beginning lessons w Ryan (through the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music) his interest, enthusiasm & skill improved dramatically & he began to excel as a musician. Ryan was soon guiding him through more complicated compositions, and the joy of playing was evident every time my son picked up his sax. With Ryan’s training, he learned to prepare for auditions, and as a result has won a seat (and solos!) in several State & city select bands, jazz ensembles and every group his school has to offer.

Ryan’s personality was a great fit for my son. He’s very professional, while being completely approachable, patient & encouraging, and his love of music is passed along to his students. His versatility & broad knowledge of musical genres allow him to introduce new directions for his students to explore. With Ryan, my son studied classical compositions and also deepened his interest in Jazz. The chance to work with Ryan on his improv skills was very valuable to him...it brought a new level of confidence & comfort to his playing.

I would recommend Ryan to anyone looking for a private music instructor, either for themselves or for their son or daughter!

I specialize in working with beginners of all ages and with students at any level who know the style or styles of music they want to explore and master. My passion is working with my students in ways that prepare them to pursue their musical interests armed with what I call the "building blocks" of music: knowledge of functional music theory and how to use it.

"Functional music theory" can sound daunting, but in fact it is fascinating, at least the way I teach it, using analogies appropriate to the age of the student, from chords like different types of sandwiches (yum!) to chord progressions like the materials and equipment used to build a house.

About Teresa
A musician since age 4, Teresa's dad took her early passion for music seriously. So she respects the power that parents have to foster their children's musical lives! She notes the many stories she has heard over the years: "If someone had just supported my interest"... "If my teacher had listened to what I wanted to learn."

These stories and her own passion for music-making inform her approach. A degreed music educator and multi-instrumentalist, she celebrates and uses the musical interests of her students to move them forward. She has three grown sons, including two touring musicians. Their musical lives also influence her work with children, young people, and adults. The point is to celebrate and develop each student's unique, interest-based musical self-expression.

In her home teaching studio in Sherwood Forest, CA, 30 minutes
is the perfect lesson time for most purposes. Options include piano, voice, ukulele, beginning guitar, music reading/theory, and preparation for auditions. Teresa also conducts early childhood music sessions for 3 to 5 year-olds and is available to do group sessions.

45-minute and 60-minute sessions are also available as needed. Teresa recommends 45 minutes to an hour for audition preparation.

My daughter really enjoyed her lesson with Teresa. It was her first piano lesson that she has ever taken. She left there with excitement and looking forward her next lesson with her. In just 30 minutes she felt she had learned so much.
Teresa was very professional and kid friendly and made my daughter feel special and confident.

About Erik
Pianist, music director, and vocal coach, Erik was born and raised in Eastern Washington state. He has been heard all across the northwest and beyond, in cities including Seattle, Portland, Tacoma, NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Houston, and internationally in Prague and Salzburg. Erik has been a guest artist at Whitman College, Portland State University, The Kairos Chamber Music Lyceum, California State University Summer Arts, the West Seattle Symphony, and the Gig-Harbor Peninsula Symphony Orchestra. In addition to performing, Erik’s passion for teaching has led him to be an adjudicator for various festivals including the Washington Sonata-Sonatina Festival and the Washington Regional Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Newly relocating to the East Coast, Erik is highly sought after for his collaborative work with both instrumentalist
s and vocalists. He is comfortable in all musical styles and genres, and has an extensive knowledge of music history and theory. Erik is currently on staff at New York University.

Students of Erik have the opportunities to perform in studio recitals and workshops.
