An experienced and certified Suzuki teacher, my students learn to play the violin starting from a solid foundation with emphasis on posture and producing a beautiful tone. In addition to playing the instrument, students can expect to learn reading music, basic theory, music history, and ear training. Learning violin will teach patience, concentration, the value of hard work, coordination, as well as enhancing memory, aural skills, and fine motor control. It was Dr. Suzuki's belief and mine that learning an instrument not only fosters these skills but also helps to foster the hearts and minds of those learning the craft.

About Sylvia
Sylvia Wehrs is a violinist based in Cleveland, with an active career as a performer and teacher. She is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music with both a Bachelor’s in Violin Performance and a Master’s degree in Violin Performance and Suzuki Pedagogy. A fully certified teacher through the Suzuki Association of the Americas, she teaches through the Music Settlement, Laurel School, and Warren Henry Music, and maintains a private studio of students in Cleveland and Zimbabwe with ages ranging from three year-olds to adults. As a performer, she performs regularly throughout the Cleveland area with the Akron Symphony, Firelands Symphony, and in chamber and solo appearances in a variety of settings from concert halls to hospitals.

During the summers Ms. Wehrs has participated in Bowdoin International Music Festival, National Reper
tory Orchestra, and Music Inspire Africa, a life-changing program that allowed her to share her love of performing and teaching music with the people of South Africa and Zimbabwe. Building from this experience, Ms. Wehrs founded her own program in 2017, Cleveland Harare Music Exchange, which seeks to bring musical guidance to the children of Harare, Zimbabwe through the Suzuki method and high level performances.

Sylvia is calm and supportive. I am just restarting my lessons and it can be frustrating. Sylvia is patient and stays with my strengths, while encouraging me to work on the areas that are difficult. Really appreciate her style, so far.

I began playing the violin at the age of 7 and have played with the Cleveland Institute of Music Youth Orchestra, the Cleveland Women's Orchestra, the Tuscarawas Philharmonic and am currently the principal second violinist with the Stow Symphony Orchestra. I believe that students can and should read music, but also believe in the importance of being able to "play by ear." My methods combine the best of Suzuki and Sassmannshaus methods. I have also been active in alternative string styles as a performer and a teacher.

About Barbara
Learning to play a musical instrument is a skill that has been proven to improve brain activity. It is one of the only activities to engage both sides of the brain. Students who learn a musical instrument show improvement in their ability to pay attention and understand what is being taught in their academic classes. Most students retain this advantage even if they do not continue to play into adulthood.

Music is fun! It also can express your feelings in ways words cannot. I don't just teach you how to play your instrument, I will teach you to have a love for your music, and from that, you will find that it is a lot of fun! After all, you do "play" your instrument!

In addition to the violin, viola and theory lessons described below, I am also available to coach ensembles. Any combination of string instruments you are working
with, I will work with your group to improve your cohesiveness and your musical style.

Nice to have the one on one teaching experience. If you have an issue she can stop you right on the spot that is giving you an issue and tell you what your are doing incorrectly. She also tells you what you are doing right.

I've been teaching violin for about 6 years and am currently pursuing my Master's of Music Performance at CU-Boulder. Having taught as a private teacher for younger students as well as a Teaching Assistant for a String Methods class in my undergrad, I am extremely comfortable working with a wide range of ages and skill levels. I teach classical and Suzuki style, as well as basic music theory, note-reading, and other skills based on the student's needs and skill set.

About Ava
A recent Master of Music graduate of University of Colorado Boulder, Ava began her violin studies at the age of six. During her undergraduate degree at Truman State University, Ava was a two-time Gold Medal Concerto Competition finalist and regularly appeared as concertmaster with the Truman State Symphony orchestra, where she has also held the positions of principal second violinist and principal violist.

As an active chamber musician, Ava was the first violinist in Truman State University’s President’s String Quartet, the university’s only highly competitive string chamber ensemble. She toured Italy twice with the President’s String Quartet, performing recitals in 2013 and 2015.

At CU, Ava has served as concert master and principal second violinist of the Eklund Opera Orchestra, as well as section violinist with the University o
f Colorado Symphony Orchestra. During the summer of 2016, she travelled to Italy as part of CU's "Renaissance in the XXI Century" program where she studied with Alberto Bologni and performed a wide variety of chamber music.

Ava is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Music in Violin Performance at the University of Colorado-Boulder under Professor Harumi Rhodes. Her past teachers include Dr. Sam McClure, Julie Lundgren, and Kathy Karpicke.

Amazing first lesson!! :) I'm a beginner with very little musical experience beyond picking up my violin once in a while, and by the end of our 45 minutes Marilyn had me playing a couple of different rhythms and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. She covered the bow hold and how to position the violin, where your fingers should be -- all the essential basics you would expect to learn at a first lesson. She was super, super nice and great to talk with! If you have any questions, she's happy to answer them, and it was just all around a great experience. The time went by so fast -- 45 minutes felt like 15 minutes! Can't wait for our next one!

Our 8 year old son, Ben, takes violin with Mrs. Taylor once a week. He loves the time with her & she is wonderful with him. Disciplined, but fun and always encouraging. She is so talented, which is inspiring for Ben. She is also very accommodating when our schedule gets hectic, which happens from time to time with two busy kids!

I structure my lessons so the student is learning and is disciplined to practice, but at the same time, having fun playing the violin. I like to start with scales and introduce my students to technique, a good sound and a productive way to practice.

I am very excited to be on this musical journey with you.

About Danae
I believe that over time, with dedication to practicing and properly structured lessons, students can become great musicians. I've seen this again and again in the 10 years since I started teaching, and I absolutely love watching young musicians grow under my guidance.

For me, teaching is a way of giving back. I am indebted to Bryan Dumm, (Cleveland Orchestra), Heidi Albert, (College of Wooster), Keith Robinson, (Kent State University), and many other well known musicians. These great teachers have taught me that good practice skills pay off in the end. Good technique makes you a better player. Also, the right focus and motivation will help you to grow, not only as a musician, but also as a person.

I provide properly structured lessons. I push my students hard to practice regularly, but it's ultimately up to the parents and the stu
dents to ensure this happens. Music provides kids with discipline, and it works the creative and analytical sides of the brain at the same time. How cool is that!

Danae has been a wonderful teacher and she has helped me tremendously with my desire to play the cello. A quietly observant instructor has a way of noticing the roadblocks and suggesting the subtle changes that can help you through them. Danae has that quality and her experience as well as her ability to pass that experience along has been key to my progress. I truly appreciate her talent and her patience.

I believe that a student is capable of doing anything, and that musical ability is something that can be taught to anyone who works diligently. I teach each student according to their unique set of skills and challenges. I studied Mimi Zweig's Pedagogy methods while at Indiana University, as well as the Suzuki method. I also studied the Alexander technique for three years and use this method to help teach my students body awareness and how to avoid pain and injury.

About Deanna
Deanna currently lives in Washington D.C. and is on faculty for the DC Youth Orchestra Program and a member of the contemporary string quartet, Rogue Collective. In the 2017-18, Deanna will be a Fulbright scholar and will be performing in Copenhagen, Denmark. A native Texan, Deanna Said, was introduced to music in the public schools at around the same time she was introduced to line dancing. Her passion for music quickly developed, and at age 16 she began lessons. She went on to complete degrees at the San Francisco Conservatory, University of Nevada Reno, and most recently from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. She believes in the transformational power of music, and, in the summer of 2015 was performing quartet outreach concerts in neighborhoods throughout Chicago as part of the Grant Park Music Festival. Her main teachers
have been Catherine Van Hoesen of San Francisco Symphony, Ed Gazouleas of Boston Symphony, and Stephanie Sant’Ambrogio of The Cleveland Orchestra.

I took a couple viola lessons from Ms. Deanna last year and it was an excellent experience. Ms. Deanna is an amazing teacher who teaches with great clarity and detail. She not only helped perfect my viola technique, she also taught me how to practice effectively. She taught me several time management methods and how to practice exactly what I need to practice with the limited time I have. With these methods, I am able to approach new music quickly and efficiently.
