20 years I've been including music theory in my lessons and many times giving private lessons just on the subject to Singers, Percussionists and instrumentalists outside of guitar. I have some fantastic sight singing books but I start with your memory, the melodies that have touched you. We explore your personal contact with music to find that you actually know the intervals, the building blocks of music. My understanding of chord function and harmonic colour gets clearly categorized and explained for the student so she/he can use for her/his self to develop a better ear and the right tools to analyze how any song works.

I have been taking lessons with Billy since January 2015. I am a total beginner and I really think I have made the best choice ever to pick him as my teacher. Billy is an experienced guitar teacher and a professional player that knows great techniques for beginners. He has been teaching me basics of guitar in a smart way, and at each lesson I feel I learn something new and at the same time I can clearly see how much progress I have made since our first lesson. He has also been teaching me how to read music and tabs which proofed to be extremely useful every time I want to learn a new song by myself. Highly recommended!

Juan went through many fundamentals of classical guitar, how to place your hands over the strings for articulation and economy of movement. Very useful.

Juan is wonderful and very knowledgeable in music. He is very patient and makes you feel comfortable. I leave a lesson feeling like I am accomplished and relaxed. It nice to see progress in such a little time. I go home with enthusiasm to learn more and want practice to do so.
Chrystine R.
With a patient and intuitive approach, Juan tailors each lesson to fit not only the student’s skill level, but also desire for depth of understanding. When I first began taking lessons, I was only able to plunk a few chords and play along with a few basic songs. However, over the course of a year and a half with Juan, I gained a foundational knowledge of the classical guitar, as well as the confidence to site read and play a range of other styles of guitar music. He seamlessly integrated music theory concepts into song studies, helping me learn major/minor scales and chord shapes, and then apply this knowledge to better understand song structures and composition. It has been such a great experience learning from Juan, especially because he is both an exemplary teacher and guitar player!

Theory is essential if you want to understand what you're doing!

I have been teaching piano for over 40 years, full-time for the past 15. Besides the actual repertoire, technique and theory are always included in my lessons because they are essential. Sight reading and ear training are also included in some lessons.

I stress accuracy in playing and attention to details! I also teach my students HOW to practice. Slow, accurate practice is the answer. Practicing takes patience!

Please note: Home lessons must be at a location that I can get to easily with public transportation. I do not have a car.

About Emil

I started to study the piano at the age of seven with Hrant Minassian in my hometown of Island Park, New York. During high school I continued my studies with Jack Chaikin , a graduate of the Juilliard School. I attended Hofstra University where I received a B.A. in Music in 1979. At Hofstra, my pian

I took up the piano as an adult, without having had any experience in it as a child (though I played guitar through college). I tried a few instructors prior to discovering Emil, with whom I have been studying now for over 2 years.

Emil is a wonderful teacher. He is far and away the most accomplished piano player I have studied with, and his knowledge of, and facility for, playing really comes through in his instruction. He is always bringing formal instruction back to the act of performance, and how to make whatever piece you are working on, even the simplest, sound the best that it can be.

Emil isn't afraid to share his own struggles with whatever piece he is currently working on, and pointing out that he faces the same challenges that every practicing player faces.

Emil is personable, knowledgeable, and kind. I can't recommend him highly enough as an instructor.
Travis
A wonderfully skilled teacher with decades of experience, Emil will certainly help take your playing to the next level.

Emil is very easy to work with and is a fun and inspired teacher. My daughter loves taking lessons from him.

He made it easy for me to understand concepts that were always lost on me in the past. It was the best money I have ever spent to get my skills and knowledge where I need them to be. "Studying with Chris has been awesome. We started working together on music theory and since then he has helped me to better understand songwriting, live performance and sound production. I feel so much more confident in my abilities as a musician with the skills I’ve leaned from him. Chris is patient and very thorough. There were several moments when learning music theory that I felt I wasn’t picking it up fast enough and he continued to review the material with me until I understood it. Chris is very fluid in his teaching approach. He is able to shift from one topic to another based on what I am wanting to focus on in each lesson. My favorite part of working with his has been diving deep into my original songs and brainstorming ways to improve them. Chris always has tons of ideas to offer that are rooted in theory which makes them both practical and effective."

Transcribing rhythms and ear training analysis have always been my weaknesses when it comes to music theory knowledge and finding the right exercises and techniques to improve has always been quite a difficult process to achieve. I started taking lessons with Jillian around when i started high school a couple years ago. I play french horn in school, and I'm considering studying music in college, so I definitely needed to know more music theory. I play guitar too, so we started studying songwriting, too, so that I can write some songs with my band. Jillian's so nice, and really smart, so she makes it really easy to learn! I really like classes with her."

How to Change the Key of a Song With and Without a Computer

What Does it Mean to Change a Key? To change a song’s “key” means to shift the whole musical system to a higher or lower position. This process is called “transposition.” Performers often need transpose a song to better fit their voices. That way, a performer with a naturally lower singing voice (like myself) will be able to more comfortably sing a song that was originally written for someone with a naturally higher voice. Or vice versa.  For singers, transposition feels fairly …
