*** Lesson Details ***
I take a great amount of pride in what I do, and I am very proud of the results I have achieved with every single student. Lessons are planned on an individual basis, in order to facilitate success for every student, based on their own needs, requirements, interests, and goals.

I do own a travel drum set that can be transported to lessons upon request, but all drum students should own their own drum set to practice and perform on.

Very punctual always comes in with a smile .My daughter has such confidence because of the positive attitude and comments her gives to her . He notices little details that will help her improve her playing the way he communicates with her is awesome she does not feel bad about her mistakes I wanted her to take her time and not feel pressured to play the violin .Thomas will be a lovely music tutor to any child I am really fortunate to have found him for my daughter.

Whether your interest is classical music, fiddle or contemporary, you can be sure you will start your journey off right. First you will learn the basics, which apply to all types of violin playing, and then you can specialize in any genre you wish after that.

You will gradiently learn everything you need to know, becoming skilled at each new task, and never being overwhelmed by an avalanche of unimportant information. My goals for you are based upon three things:

1. Working towards your goals
2. Increasing your strengths
3. Strengthening your weaknesses.

Everybody has weaknesses and I work to improve yours with both education and practice (You can only learn how to practice something correctly if you know how to do it correctly, or fix what is wrong with it.)

Expect to play the violin on your first day, play a song within the first few weeks, and get to an intermediate level in about one year - of course, depending on how much you practice.

About Antoinette
Finding an schooled violinist and finding a good violin teacher are two very different things. When I see other teacher's profiles, they boast of the years of training they had. Anyone can learn and play, but it takes a love of teaching to really make a difference in someone's life.

PATIENCE
When you have a love of teaching, you have a seemingly endless resource of patience. This is because what the student sees as "patient" is really just a small step in the educational process. It is a fraction of time just before a correction. When you have something new to teach, whether it is a new technique, or a correction of something being done improperly, and you know exactly how to break it down so it is understandable and accomplishable, you know it is always a short matter of time before the student gets it. And by short, I mean a matter
of seconds, or minutes.

FRIENDLINESS
I respect others and what they feel and have to say. I treat others as I would want to be treated and lessons are always a pleasure to my students, because it is a pleasure for me to teach them.

EXPERIENCE
I have been playing for over 26 years. I have played with a multitude of local orchestras and bands and have done countless studio recording sessions and live shows. All of this experience comes through in my teaching either directly (when it comes time for you to perform) or incrementally.

When you are learning, there is a vast sea of information. Not all of that knowledge is equal in importance. It is incredibly important to be able to distinguish what is important and what is not very important. All of my real-life experience, and continuing experience reveals itself in the form of ensuring my students know what is truly important.

Lest you get the idea that I am a wishy-washy, undemanding teacher, I can assure you this is not the case. Lessons are fun, but that is because they are productive. You will walk away being able to do something, and that requires hard work, and practice.

And a winning attitude.

I can even work with you if you don't have a winning attitude, but it makes it more fun when you do!

HOW FAST CAN I EXPECT RESULTS?
Some students who were musicians previously leave the first lesson being able to play their first song. Most students however, who have never played an instrument before, can expect to be comfortable bowing (a huge part of the process - half the sound!) within the first few weeks, and will then move on to learning songs. We will be learning sheet music as well, on a very, very easy gradient. After the first couple months, I expect you to tell me which song it is you might like to learn most so that we can start working on it.

Antoinette is, by far, the best music instructor that I have ever hired. Music has always been a part of my life. As a child, I took piano lessons for years and continued on and off through college. As a complete novice to the violin, I was nervous to begin such a challenging instrument as an adult hobby. Antoinette is encouraging, intelligent and incredibly skilled. Her calm demeanor and patience is vital to one's success. She focuses on the building blocks to a successful technique with ease. I am incredibly grateful to Antoinette for reminding me of how enjoyable music can be. I look forward to our weekly sessions around my busy work schedule. Her location is conveniently located within walking distance from the subway in NYC.

I took violin lessons for a year with an instructor I found through a different organization (not TakeLessons)--and I learned more in one hour with Antoinette than I learned in 30 lessons with that other teacher. In just one lesson, I can see that Antoinette is friendly, smart, encouraging, knows her stuff--and knows how to teach (which not every good player can do). I'm an adult, but I bet she'd be just as great with a student of any age.

Born in Cebu City, Philippines in 1990, raised primarily in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries, and pursuing further education in the United States of America, Hopengrace ("Penny") is a Global Nomad currently situated in the Greater New York City Area.

She started taking music lessons from her mother at the age of four and learned to read music at the same time she started to read storybooks. ​From the age of ten, Hopengrace took violin lessons, during her parents' rare furloughs, from Mr. Frederico Regner, a World War II veteran returned from the United States. While in the Philippines for a combined year of junior and senior level high school, she took violin lessons from Mr. Marc Hamlet Mercado and Mr. Rodelio Flores. Hopengrace has also taken coaching from Ms. Princess Christine Ybañez to prepare for competit
ion in the Solo String (Bowed) category of the 14th National Student Convention in which she won 2nd Place.

In 2007, Hopengrace received a Presidential Scholarship from Tennessee Temple University (TTU). There she studied violin under Mrs. Laura Minor (B.Mus. Vanderbilt University, MA Music NYU). She also took piano from Mrs. Carolyn Kemp​ (BS Mus.Ed. Baptist Bible College, MA Mu. Ed. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga) and voice from Dr. William Knowles and Mr. Michael Mays (BS Mus. Perf. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, MA Church Music Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary).

In 2008, as a member of TTU's Weigle Concert Choir, Hopengrace had the privilege to be chosen to sing with a combined choir in Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium with the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Dr. David Thye, Principal Conductor-in-Residence of MidAmerica Productions. She became a member of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Youth Orchestra (CSOYO) ​in the fall of that year and continued performing with them for three seasons. She also participated in the special orchestra for the annual Chattanooga Boys' Choir "Singing Christmas Tree" concerts at the Tivoli Theatre. In 2010, world-renowned violinist Midori chose CSOYO as one of two youth orchestras for her annual Orchestra Residencies Program, and Hopengrace had the rare opportunity to perform with one of her inspirations in concert.

Hopengrace​ became a registered Suzuki Method Violin Teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas on July 2011. She has also trained in Orff-Schulwerk.

During her travels around the world, Hopengrace struggled to keep her art alive. However, she has often been complemented for her distinctive strong, full-bodied tone​ and adaptability. Her range varies from Baroque to Modern. She plays on a John Cheng 1737 "King Joseph" Guarneri model violin with both wood and carbon fiber bows.

​Hopengrace welcomes students and employment while she prepares for entrance in a Master of Music in Performance program. She hopes to start on that new chapter of her life in the fall of 2013. Inspired by the impact of Venezuela's El Sistema program and her own experiences during her travels, Hopengrace hopes to use her talents to enable or build similar programs both while she teaches and in the lands where she was raised. ​

As a teacher, my goal is to instruct as well as inspire each student to reach for his or her highest potential. I hope to give each student the tools to progress so that one day they can be their own best teacher, and play with a sound and style that is uniquely their own. Most importantly, I hope to instill a desire to learn and a mindset that the art of violin playing is fun and that it is just as we call it--playing. My teaching abilities range from beginning through advanced levels. Students must have a desire to learn and commit to daily (mindful) practice.

I am a Suzuki Violin teacher. This means that I am trained to work with even the youngest of musicians in a nurturing , fun and challenging way. Dr. Suzuki believed that it was important to develop a noble character in all children through the mastery of a musical instrument. He also believed that all children were capable of this mastery if the environment is saturated with music and love. My students enjoy playing the violin because they are given the tools they need to play beautifully and to make progress on their instrument. Each lesson will focus on proper set up and posture, technical work and musical direction/ideas that will inspire them to carry on their work throughout the week. I demonstrate quite a bit in the lessons, as I find it is the most effective way to communicate in music. However, I am only with the student once a week, therefore much of the lesson is geared towards helping the parent and child understand what his/her home tasks are, and how to carry them out successfully. 10 minutes of mindful practice is worth an hour of careless work.

​Parental support and involvement is key to any child’s progress, especially at the beginning stages. Parents of young beginners are encouraged to take a few lessons before starting their child on the instrument. Parents serve as a practice coach/partner during daily home practice sessions and are required to attend and participate in their child’s lessons. Listening to recordings and attending live concerts are strongly recommended to increase musical awareness and enthusiasm in the student.

In spite of my rigorous Suzuki training, my unorthodox learning experience has taught me the value of being flexible and using methods that work best for a specific individual. I am not averse to seeking and applying a new method (eg. traditional, Masterclass, O'Connor, etc.) if the situation calls for it.

What should be expected from a Teacher/Student relationship?

I think a student should expect their teacher to give them honest, thoughtful feedback. Just enough that they can manage the information at that time. The teacher should give detailed instruction on ways the student can improve, without destroying the students sense of self worth or spirit. On the contrary, the teacher must always find a way to see the student as having great potential. This way, no matter how limited the current level of ability may be, there is hope for growth. Even without saying it, the student will feel the teachers' attitude towards him and may become that person (for better or for worse). The student should expect to be challenged, encouraged and inspired by their teacher. The teacher should expect that the student and the parents commit to daily practice, and have a desire to improve. The student must apply his/her teacher's feedback while always searching within himself for ways to develop. Mutual respect is key.

I try to get to know my students so that they feel comfortable. I am laid back, but also determined that a student practice well, and learn not only the instrument but music fundamentals a
s well. I try to show students that learning music is a lifelong pursuit that can provide all types of fun and personal fulfillment, in addition to being a potential career and social outlet. After 3-6 months, the student will be playing songs, good ones, not just scales. They will also have learned basics, such as chords and scales, as well as sight reading.

Education goals:
I believe students, no matter the age, background, or means, can achieve great music making and enjoy a fun and satisfactory journey doing so. I am experienced in using Suzuki, Indiana String Pedagogy, some Kodaly, and my own method, to foster this learning. I have been teaching children ages 5-18, and adult students, for almost ten years now. Working at Fairview Elementary gave me a great introduction to group teaching in a classroom, which I hope to soon be able to build upon. Augusta is an emerging classical and baroque violinist, performing internationally as both soloist and orchestral musician. She was winner of the 2014 Indianapo
lis Baroque Orchestra Concerto Competition, and semifinalist in the 2014 Musica Antiqua International Competition in Bruges, Belgium. Augusta holds a B.M. degree from the Oberlin Conservatory and a M.M. degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She will begin studies at The Juilliard School in the Fall of 2015 for baroque violin, as proud recipient of a Kovner Fellowship. Recent highlights include a performance as chamber musician with members of the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, Apollo's Fire, in their Bach Family Frolic concert series in January 2015.
In the 2015-2016 season, Augusta will perform as concerto soloist with the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, with the Bach A minor Violin Concerto. Augusta performs as an apprentice with Apollo's Fire and is a substitute violinist with Boston Baroque. She has collaborated on stage with members of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra during their Winter Institute, and was invited to play in a Tafelmusik masterclass for renowned violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch.
On modern violin she has worked under such conductors as Kurt Masur, Michael Tilson Thomas, Alan Gilbert, James Gaffigan, David Zinman, and Robert Spano.
Augusta holds a Bachelor of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in violin performance, with a minor in historical performance, graduating at age 19 with honors (Pi Kappa Lambda Society). Her principal teachers were Milan Vitek (modern violin) and Marilyn McDonald (baroque violin). She currently is pursuing her Masters of Music in violin performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, under the tutelage of Alexander Kerr and Stanley Ritchie. She spent an exchange semester in 2011-12 at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, with Johannes Leertouwer and Sophie Gent.
She began her violin studies at the age of three with the Suzuki Violin School Method, continuing her studies in Moscow, Russia at the age of 12 with Zoya Makhtina of the Moscow Central Special Music School. Throughout her childhood, Augusta studied privately with Gregory Fulkerson and Almita and Roland Vamos.
Her related teaching coursework includes classes at Oberlin Conservatory and Indiana University, in pedagogy. She has studied string pedagogy methods with Mimi Zweig and Joanne Erwin. I very much appreciated Augusta's efficient and organized usage of curriculum. She taught two of my children in their highschool years. Augusta works with Suzuki and other methods, and creates a wonderful combination that really helps get the most of one's musical and violinistic goals. She is both persistent and fun. Doesn't let anything slide, but at the same time makes learning effortless and fun. Both my kids enjoyed working with her very much. She seems to work well with all ages and personalities. Augusta is also very friendly, and easy to schedule with. I would definitely recommend her to anyone.

Hi, I'm Ian, a 23 year old music major who just completed his B.A. At Hunter College. I try and play as many instruments as possible to expand my musical repertoire, but I am the most well versed in violin and guitar. I've been playing violin for 14 years and guitar for 9. I am involved in a number of musical projects and bands including my own, Cicero & the Orations. I also have a good knowledge of theory and have taken all but two of Hunters offered theory classes. I am currently a lessons instructor at a corporate site but I am always looking to teach music, since it's what I want to do with my life. Ian's patience and knowledge of many types of music is awesome! He takes a very empathetic approach to teaching; he tailors what knowledge he shares and what instructional techniques he employs based on my learning style and past experiences. If your looking for a kind, down to earth teacher who's not elitist when it comes to teaching anything from classical violin to rock guitar, Ian's the guy.
