Currently, I am teaching and performing in the greater NJ and NYC areas, and have performed with notable figures such as Steve LaSpina, James Williams, Tyshawn Sorey, and Yasha Koffman.
*** Lesson Details ***
The first thing I want to accomplish in my lessons is to get the student excited about playing music in general. That means understanding what kind of music the student likes to listen to and incorporate it into the lessons. I find that relating ear training, theory, reading, technique, and rhythmic study to the music that they are interested in is a great way to do that.
CLASSICAL GUITAR INSTRUCTION:
We will focus on a variety of topics including right and left hand technique, proper body position, sound production and tone, reading, repertoire, and finding your own personal musical voice with regards to playing classical music.
JAZZ GUITAR INSTRUCTION:
We will cover jazz theory, chord shapes, scales, repertoire, and transcription. Jazz is an oral tradition and I am a firm believer that the best way to learn it is through listening/transcribing and applying those concepts on your instrument. We will draw inspiration and knowledge from great jazz musicians of the past in addition to finding your own personal voice as an improviser in jazz music.
TEACHING YOUNG CHILDREN:
I have lot of experience teaching young children (as young as 5 years old). For these children, I like to focus on the basic foundations of music (e.g. rhythm, melody, etc.). We will use a variety of tools (rhythm sticks, guitar books for children, singing) to enrich these early foundations in music, in addition to learning to get over the physical demands of learning to play the guitar.
*** Frequency Requirement ***
Students are required to take lessons at least once per week in order to insure consistent progress and ongoing assessment. Lessons given every other week are not offered.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room set up. Chairs. Music stands. Guitars. Music. Seating for parents. *** Please note, there is no piano in studio. If you are interested in piano lessons, only in home lessons are available.
*** Travel Equipment ***
I usually provide guitar picks if needed, photocopies of materials (mel bay, chord charts, etc.). I require my students to have the instruments that they will be taking lessons on and a notebook to write in.

Piano lessons are in students' homes only! I cover music theory, application of music theory, technique, ear training, sight reading, and repertoire building.
I teach a variety of styles including classical, jazz, rock, folk and blues.

Etan comes to our home which works for 2 kids lesson, one guitar the other piano. He is always on time, and can handle kids who sometimes have difficulty getting going. Nothing stops him. Each of my kids has improved and likes Etan. That is a success story. This has turned out better than expected. Etan rocks!!!

Lilli L. began formal piano lessons at the young age of three-and-a-half in Sacramento, California. She studied classical piano on and off for thirteen years before expanding her musical repertoire to other genres and instruments. At 16 she began singing and songwriting on guitar and piano, and at 18 inherited a drum set she played daily. She resumed private piano instruction with a new teacher, Tatiana Scott, and completed all music theory, jazz theory, and ear-training courses at college under the tutelage of Tatiana and noted jazz pianist and professor Dr. Joe Gilman. She continued on to study classical voice at College of Marin after a move to the bay area in 2013, and studied contemporary voice with Amber Morris.
Despite extensive traveling and joining the workforce at a young age, by her early twenties music instruction had become her sole profession. Since then she has been thoroughly dedicated to her students’ success and is credited for having a sharp intuition for her students’ musical preferences and learning styles and for being a sensitive and empathetic mentor. With such a broad range of musical tastes she is happy and able to teach a spectrum of musical styles on piano and in voice. Despite great success teaching music in Marin County, she relocated to finish her degree in piano performance and contemporary voice and currently resides in the Upper East Side of New York, New York teaching, studying, and playing with her band Armadillo.
Whether it's a hobby or a serious endeavor, she welcomes all students and coordinates with them based on their goals and learning style.
Cancellation Policy :
Lessons are a weekly occurrence and both the student and teacher fare better with continuity of lessons. Please keep cancellations/reschedules to a minimum and within reason: illness, emergency, major holidays, school functions are excusable. Absences for other reasons (such as busyness, playdates, etc.) or without 24 hours notice result in being charged for the lesson. Please give ample notice for vacations so the teacher can plan accordingly. If sick, let your teacher know ahead of time so she can make an informed decision about her own health. Thank you!

Justin has spent 14 years studying under some of the best vocal coaches in New York and New Jersey, including Sarah Bachman Krieger (Manhattan School of Music, The Juilliard School), Steven Schnurman (The Juilliard School) and; Katherine Wessinger (University of Michigan). He currently studies under Melissa Perry (Westminster Choir College, Temple, and post-graduate work included 750 hours with Maestro Vittorio Rosetta of La Scala) While doing studies at Westminster Choir College, he studied with Tenor Eric Rieger (Eastman School of Music).
Justin founded and directed The A Cappella Choir of Middlesex County. After a successful first year and a full-length album, The A Cappella Choir sang at Carnegie Hall for the premiere of Eric Whitacre's electronic opera "Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings"
Justin was the head of the choral department at the New Dover United Methodist Church in Edison, NJ. He directed and musically directed production's of The Rocky Horror Show at the Villagers Theater in Somerset, which subsequently moved to The Den Nightclub and ran for 2 consecutive years.
Justin has organized, directed and performed in fundraisers for the Edison high school Choral program, the program that first honed his raw talent and a place that to this day he still can call a home.
As a performer, Justin was seen as a backup singer in the Bryan Hansen band. He has participated in theater all over NJ and is frequently hired for studio session work. He recently contributed backing vocals for Mike Wells' upcoming third studio album.
Justin has been teaching privately since 2007 (Justin Pollinger Vocal Studio). His Students have been accepted to some of the top music programs in the country including Westminster Choir College, Boston Conservatory, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, Mason Gross School School of the Arts, The Hart School and AMDA.

He was always punctual when arriving to rehearsals, scheduling rehearsals was a breeze, even with our packed schedules, and he was always prepared for each rehearsal with copies of the music I'd provided, as well as notes he'd gained by working through the music prior to the rehearsal.
He had a pleasant demeanor, and plenty of creative ideas for any places in the song that allowed for improvisation or personalization of the chords or phrasing. His accompaniment was the perfect companion to my singing, and could range many genres of music.
I also worked with him as the pianist in larger bands performing in the NYC area, and there as well, he was great to work with. Highly recommended! :)
Music Theory is the study of how music works. I enjoy helping students understand the elements of music theory including harmony, counterpoint and analysis.
He holds a Masters Degree in Music from McGill University and a Bachelors from The Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University, where he was a recipient of the Charlie Byrd Memorial Scholarship.
