Hi! Welcome to my TakeLessons page, where I provide information about my background and teaching services.

I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. My piano and voice students include children, working professionals, performing artists, and seniors. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. My training at Columbia University and with private instructors focused on classical repertoire and theory, but I also work with students on popular music (i.e.Pop, R&B, Electronica, and Folk). Music theory (i.e. sight reading, chord progressions) and practices from Linklater, Alexander, Williamson movement, and Art of Practicing techniques are incorporated into my music instruction.

30 minute-lessons are available for children aged 5-6 only while 60-minute lessons are available for students above the age of 6. Prospective students may sign up to take a trial lesson with me at first to ...

What is my background?
I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. I have developed a keen ability to assess and shape talent from years of training, teaching, performing, and working with the head of Arts programs to conduct admissions interviews, student evaluations, and performances. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. My training at Columbia University and privately with notable musicians focused on classical repertoire and theory, but I also work with students on popular music (i.e. Pop, R&B, Electronica, and Folk).

What material is covered during lessons?
Music theory (i.e. sight reading, chord progressions) as well as posture,
artistic expression, interpretation, breathing, and finger and pitch placement techniques are incorporated into my music instruction. Cold reading, audition preparation and technique, Shakespeare, scene analysis, and business strategies are examples of topics that may be covered in acting instruction. Linklater (voice), Alexander, Williamson (movement), and Art of Practicing (piano) methods are also employed.

What are the profiles of my students?
My students come from different walks of life: children coming from school who bound excitedly to my lesson door; teenage artists who have the passion and vision but lack the technique; working adults who seek reprieve from the stress of work by singing/ learning an instrument that they've always wanted to play; and seniors who want a fun hobby to keep active. I enjoy teaching them and watching them master the fundamentals while developing their own performance style (or even composing their own music)!

What is my teaching style?
Based on feedback, students appreciate that I am a teacher with a warm personality whose supportive, passionate, and fun approach and effective techniques help them attain the following: 1) a firm understanding of the fundamentals of music theory or acting technique; 2) an ability to effectively learn how to perform and practice singing/playing/acting a piece; and 3) a style of performing that minimizes tension, produces beautiful sound or a dynamic character, and/or allows them to fully express themselves. After a few months, students should have sound knowledge of all three.

My students and I connect, in part, because I remember being like them. On stage, I started out dancing and acting; I delved into singing and songwriting and then fell in love with playing the piano. The day that I learned how to merge those passions (i.e. singing while playing the piano) was one of the happiest days of my life! Now, whether I'm performing Shakespeare on stage, playing Chopin and Beethoven, or singing while playing tunes by Whitney Houston, I still get excited. Hopefully, I fuel that excitement in you, too!

What is the lesson structure?
Due to the comprehensive nature of my teaching style and structure, students above the age of 6 take lessons for 60 minutes; 30-minute lessons are only available for children aged 5-6. If a student wants to learn how to play while singing, I am happy to help him/her do so!

My studio location in Manhattan is conveniently near Midtown, Chelsea, Flat Iron, Murray Hill, Union Square, Tribeca, and the Financial District in particular and is easily accessible via public transportation. It houses an upright piano and seating for parents.

Nikole, is very warm and professional. I have never continued with voice lessons, I enjoyed the experience so much that I'm going to kick the bad habit of smoking and sit down and seriously figure my finances out to continue being taught by her. I have been performing music on stage for over 20 years. It won't take long to learn how to perform music for an audience, and I always incorporate this information for students of mine who are about to perform.

About Antoinette
Finding an schooled violinist and finding a good violin teacher are two very different things. When I see other teacher's profiles, they boast of the years of training they had. Anyone can learn and play, but it takes a love of teaching to really make a difference in someone's life.

PATIENCE
When you have a love of teaching, you have a seemingly endless resource of patience. This is because what the student sees as "patient" is really just a small step in the educational process. It is a fraction of time just before a correction. When you have something new to teach, whether it is a new technique, or a correction of something being done improperly, and you know exactly how to break it down so it is understandable and accomplishable, you know it is always a short matter of time before the student gets it. And by short, I mean a matter
of seconds, or minutes.

FRIENDLINESS
I respect others and what they feel and have to say. I treat others as I would want to be treated and lessons are always a pleasure to my students, because it is a pleasure for me to teach them.

EXPERIENCE
I have been playing for over 26 years. I have played with a multitude of local orchestras and bands and have done countless studio recording sessions and live shows. All of this experience comes through in my teaching either directly (when it comes time for you to perform) or incrementally.

When you are learning, there is a vast sea of information. Not all of that knowledge is equal in importance. It is incredibly important to be able to distinguish what is important and what is not very important. All of my real-life experience, and continuing experience reveals itself in the form of ensuring my students know what is truly important.

Lest you get the idea that I am a wishy-washy, undemanding teacher, I can assure you this is not the case. Lessons are fun, but that is because they are productive. You will walk away being able to do something, and that requires hard work, and practice.

WHAT I EXPECT FROM MY STUDENTS
Practice.
Practice.
Practice.
And a winning attitude.

I can even work with you if you don't have a winning attitude, but it makes it more fun when you do!

HOW FAST CAN I EXPECT RESULTS?
Some students who were musicians previously leave the first lesson being able to play their first song. Most students however, who have never played an instrument before, can expect to be comfortable bowing (a huge part of the process - half the sound!) within the first few weeks, and will then move on to learning songs. We will be learning sheet music as well, on a very, very easy gradient. After the first couple months, I expect you to tell me which song it is you might like to learn most so that we can start working on it.

I rent out violins of all sizes.
I sell the book that I teach out of (or you can obtain it online or from Sam Ash).

Antoinette is, by far, the best music instructor that I have ever hired. Music has always been a part of my life. As a child, I took piano lessons for years and continued on and off through college. As a complete novice to the violin, I was nervous to begin such a challenging instrument as an adult hobby. Antoinette is encouraging, intelligent and incredibly skilled. Her calm demeanor and patience is vital to one's success. She focuses on the building blocks to a successful technique with ease. I am incredibly grateful to Antoinette for reminding me of how enjoyable music can be. I look forward to our weekly sessions around my busy work schedule. Her location is conveniently located within walking distance from the subway in NYC.

I took violin lessons for a year with an instructor I found through a different organization (not TakeLessons)--and I learned more in one hour with Antoinette than I learned in 30 lessons with that other teacher. In just one lesson, I can see that Antoinette is friendly, smart, encouraging, knows her stuff--and knows how to teach (which not every good player can do). I'm an adult, but I bet she'd be just as great with a student of any age.

I started playing guitar seriously at the age of 12 and have been a guitar teacher for 22 years. My first influences were rock and metal. In my later teens, I became very interested in other music genres such as jazz, fusion and classical. I began my formal music education as a Classical Guitar performance major, ultimately obtaining a Masters Degree in Music Composition from the Queens College Aaron Copland School of Music.

The road I have taken with music has been paved with many unexpected twists and turns. Throughout my many years of learning and making new discoveries, I have now arrived at a point where I am able to productively incorporate knowledge from various experiences with music and education into my own creativity and teaching. Marco is one of the best teacher ever, I knew him way back in 1997 when I first came in to the state. At first, one of my friend was taking the session and he didn't mind me just staying and observed. After a few classes, I decided to go with Marco. As a new immigrant, language barrier is a problem. He 's patiently teach me from a to z. Making sure I understand everything. Although, I knew some of the basic of the guitar. I was surprisingly I could learn how to read music. Be able to improvise with him during lesson. You're not just learning how to play song/guitar. You learn music theory all in a packet. I still remember one day I was playing in the local shop in HK, people was whispering this guy is good. This is a good memory that I have until now.

I was a student of Marco's for about two-almost three years, and his excitement, love, desire, wisdom and passion for music and teaching is something that can't be described in words. Marco is a teacher that likes to have fun with whatever it is he may be teaching, but he is also very serious about it to make sure his students learn what they want in the best way possible to them. He will encourage his students if they need it and congratulate you every time you complete whatever it is you may have learned from him. I mostly learned techniques/songs from artist's such as Randy Rhoads, Angus Young, and much more from Marco. He will not let you down. He won't give up on you. I would gladly learn from him any time /any chance I'd get.

Marco has been teaching my son how to play the guitar since 2008. I feel that we were blessed having Marco as my son's first teacher. He really understood him and I was brought to tears at his very first recital when I was amazed how much he had learned in just a short few months. He is a senior in HS now and he has a love for the guitar and a passion to learn new music on his own.
Marco is an exceptional teacher who is very patient and understands his students and listens to their needs. He is extremely talented and anyone would be very lucky to have him as their music instructor. I recommend him highly. He is the best!

About Juan
New York city composer and guitarist Juan Calderon is a native of Ecuador raised in Colombia. He immigrated to Miami at age 20 to escape the political climate of the late 90’s, and resides in Manhattan since 2008.

Juan’s music blends elements from his unique life experiences, having been raised as an only child by a single mother in a bohemian environment. He was a recording and touring rock guitarist in Colombia, and he has studied East Asian music extensively, inspired by interaction with musicians and artists in China, Japan, and Indonesia.

His latest accomplishments include a performance of his composition “Reino Incierto” at Carnegie Hall (2015) and Sounds of the City, as well as a performance of his guitar quartet composition “Rising” by the UK guitar quartet.

Juan Calderon currently studies classical guitar with Mark D
elPriora, chair of the Guitar Department at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a master degree in composition. His mentors include composers Susan Botti, Reiko Fueting, and electronic music pioneer Joel Chadabe. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Florida, where he studied jazz guitar with Tom Lippincott, and composition with Susan Epstein-Garcia.

Juan is also an avid cartoonist, collector of rare books and little cars, food adventurer and runner.

*** Lesson Details ***
Guitar teaching encompasses many disciplines. One has to be a bit of a psychologist in order to gauge a potential student needs and musical sensibilities. The mathematical aspect of musical notation and rhythm makes us part mathematicians. In the end, there is also a self-actualizing aspect to guitar teaching in the sense that we are always witness to those moments that made us decide a career on music.
During my years of guitar teaching I have encountered many types of students, and I have learned from them as much as they have learned from me as they make me question aspects of music that I would have never thought about. I have learned to not take for granted the definition of concepts such as rhythm and harmony, and to look at guitar technique from different perspectives as I find ways to accommodate to a student’s capabilities. Ultimately, it is also a job that requires a lot of planning and structure. My first step, generally, is to assess the student’s ability and interest to find material suitable for them. Then, I proceed to familiarize with the student’s musical tastes and sensibilities to assign practice material accordingly. For example, if the student is interested in rock or pop music, we will work on a particular song that fits his level and also solves a particular technical problem. During that process I will answer any of the student’s questions, and provide insight into musical terminology. We will also work on basic concepts of rhythm, melody, and harmony. My training as a composer and jazz guitarists also enables me to tap into the student’s creative side. In that case, we would start with a basic blues progression and blues scales, and work on the basics of improvisation or songwriting.

Juan is wonderful and very knowledgeable in music. He is very patient and makes you feel comfortable. I leave a lesson feeling like I am accomplished and relaxed. It nice to see progress in such a little time. I go home with enthusiasm to learn more and want practice to do so.

With a patient and intuitive approach, Juan tailors each lesson to fit not only the student’s skill level, but also desire for depth of understanding. When I first began taking lessons, I was only able to plunk a few chords and play along with a few basic songs. However, over the course of a year and a half with Juan, I gained a foundational knowledge of the classical guitar, as well as the confidence to site read and play a range of other styles of guitar music. He seamlessly integrated music theory concepts into song studies, helping me learn major/minor scales and chord shapes, and then apply this knowledge to better understand song structures and composition. It has been such a great experience learning from Juan, especially because he is both an exemplary teacher and guitar player!

As for advanced teaching, my teaching style helps students to open their minds so they can enjoy themselves through music. I enjoy teaching my students helpful ways to think about music, as opposed to just teaching them to execute the right notes. For example I might say "play the piano

I feel so lucky to find Amanda as my son's first piano teacher. She is great with kids and make my 3 year old boy fall in love with piano now through her great teaching skills and interesting "animal story books" designed specifically for young children to learn piano. It's been only 2 months since Ethan's first piano class with her, and he's already playing with both hands and a lot of kids songs like "twinkle twinkle little star", "London bridge is falling down", "old McDonald had a farm"...Thank you Amanda!

The piano teacher for a lifetime

Amanda is an amazing teacher. I went back to taking piano lessons at the age of 45 and Amanda has been an incredibly patient, generous, intelligent and warm teacher. She is very personable, extremely knowledgeable about music, and the lessons are individually tailored so that I get the most out of them. I have learned so much as her pupil and I am growing (slowly!) as a pianist. Amanda has made this process enjoyable, fulfilling, and yes...fun!

My approach to teaching music is strictly an individualized one, catering to the specific interests and goals of each student. Adam does a great job of adjusting to the student's level of experience. I'm a beginner with some minimal uke experience, and he adjusted the pace of the lesson accordingly. I especially like his emphasis on contemporary music; he seems to have fun with music which, as someone who endured years of strict classical piano training as a kid, I find very refreshing.

Baritone Daniel Collins has performed at Carnegie Hall and with the Metropolitan Opera chorus in New York City. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of North Texas and earned both his Master of Music and Doctor of Music degrees in Vocal Performance from Florida State University. Dr. Collins was a finalist in the Dallas and El Paso Opera Guild Competitions, the NATS Singer of the Year Competition, and the NATSAA National Competition. He has performed in opera, concerts, and recitals throughout the United States and as a soloist at some of the most prestigious churches and synagogues in New York City and Washington, D.C. Dr. Collins was described by Tim Page with the Washington Post as a “funny, exuberant, and enormously likable” Papageno during Summer Opera Theater’s performance of The Magic Flu
te. The Post also celebrated him in Opera Theater of Northern Virginia’s The Barber of Seville as a “bright and bouncy” Figaro who delivered his lines with “aplomb.” He was a young artist in the studio programs of Portland Opera, Kentucky Opera, and El Paso Opera.

This was my first private lesson with Dr. Daniel, most importantly he made me feel very comfortable and I wasn't afraid to sing notes in front of him. Dr.Daniel took the time to gather my history and take notes about what I said. Dr. Daniel was very thorough for our first visit, even though I had only booked my first class to be 30 minutes. I look forward to taking more lessons with him and am excited for our next lesson! Thank you so much!

Though my time as a student with Dr. Dan was short, it was very valuable. Even though the lessons were about singing, it helped me gain a general confidence in myself regarding posture, and using a loud voice. He has given a number of exercises to develop my breathing, vibrato, tone, and lower registers to use on my own. Dr. Dan is a great teacher who makes the atomsphere of the lessons very friendly and I would highly recommend him!

Drum lessons are taught one-on-one and from a beginner level to an advanced level. Ages of students start at 6-years-old and up. I have many adult students as well. It's never too late to start a new instrument.

About Rob
I have over 18 years of professional teaching experience on drum set, snare drum and percussion (timpani, two- & four-mallets, accessory percussion and hand drums), guitar, piano, electric bass and ukulele. I have been playing music since the age of two.

Some of my most noteworthy performances have included Late Show with David Letterman (Justin Townes Earle and Allison Moorer), Tonight Show with Jay Leno (Allison Moorer), Levon Helm'™s Midnight Ramble (Allison Moorer), The Conan O'™Brien Show (Julia Nunes) and Budokan in Tokyo, Japan (Jim Campilongo Trio).

My Bachelor of Music is from Capital University where I studied with three great teachers:
Robert Breithaupt - Classical percussion and jazz drum set
Jim Ed Cobbs - Drum set, tabla and frame drums
Eric Paton - Taiko, samba, Afro-Cuban drums

*** Lesson Details ***
I treat
each student individually, catering to specific goals and needs that we will decide upon and plan together. Some students want to seriously study a craft. Others want a hobby that will be fun and interesting. I have had success teaching to both, and will impart basic fundamentals and musicianship to all types of students.

I see my primary job as keeping the student inspired, intellectually fed and sprinting in the right direction. The student's job is to do the work. Daily practice is essential to move forward in any craft.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My Brooklyn studio is a dedicated music space with two drum sets, PA, amplifiers and recording capabilities.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide books, a drum pad, sticks or mallets, an iPod with two sets of headphones, and a metronome. Additionally, I can bring small hand drums, special instruments and percussion that might be needed for specialty lessons. I expect students to have some sort of pad or drum to practice on at home; a full drum set is not necessary.

Rob is an exceptionally kind person and easygoing and laid back. He has a very good approach to teaching. I had a wonderful experience and would recommend him to anyone wanting to learn music.

Rob was an awesome teacher and even better guy. The lesson environment was comfortable, but always focused and professional. He's clearly a hugely talented musician and has a ton to offer in the way of teaching; perhaps more importantly though, his love of music inspires the student to practice and learn. Very highly recommended.

Working with Joseph was a delight! He provided his services as an accompanist for a Christmas music video I was recording.

He was always punctual when arriving to rehearsals, scheduling rehearsals was a breeze, even with our packed schedules, and he was always prepared for each rehearsal with copies of the music I'd provided, as well as notes he'd gained by working through the music prior to the rehearsal.

He had a pleasant demeanor, and plenty of creative ideas for any places in the song that allowed for improvisation or personalization of the chords or phrasing. His accompaniment was the perfect companion to my singing, and could range many genres of music.

I also worked with him as the pianist in larger bands performing in the NYC area, and there as well, he was great to work with. Highly recommended! :)

We have weekly jam sessions for all levels. I have a teaching studio where we learn to play as a group with drums, guitar, bass, keyboards & vocals. Students choose songs they want to work on & I coach the band!

About Brian
I graduated Cum Laude from New York University, where I received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Guitar Performance. I have performed all styles of music on club dates, college shows, concerts, and recording dates.

I have also released a full length commercial recording of my original pop/rock music. Currently,I am teaching full time, performing, and composing.

I enjoy working with new students to develop their playing. My experience and teaching skills has yielded great results.
