I am a NYS certified Music teacher who has been teaching in the school system for over 20 years.

I hold both my BM and MA degree in Music Education, and Jazz guitar was my major instrument in college. My focus is to teach techniques, skills and concepts for life-long learning.

I am currently available to teach Guitar, Music Theory and Beginner Piano.

Aside from teaching private guitar and piano lessons and teaching General music and Chorus in school, I perform and accompany singers as a guitarist in churches on Long Island.

For your added security, I've been VIRTUS trained with the Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre and fingerprinted with the NYS Education department.

My system of guitar training includes:

* Right hand and Left hand technical exercises geared towards developing coordination and confidence;

work in music reading of standard music notation and TAB;

* Fretboard navigation, pick-control and fingerstyle techniques.

* Song repertoire knowledge and memorization

*Solo guitar interpretation of popular songs as well as accompaniment styles appropriate for backing your or another's voice;
*Ear-training and Music theory is incorporated into each lesson.

NYSSMA preparation is available for both Classical and Jazz auditions.

Piano lessons are available with concentration in proper hand mechanics and technique, theory, ear-training and music reading. NYSSMA preparation up through level 4 is available.

*** Lesson Details ***
My guitar lessons follow a structured format. I begin with technical exercises for both the picking/strumming hand and the fretting hand, leading to good sound production. As students learn to achieve well-balanced tones, they learn to apply that to the written page using standard music notation and the TAB system. From single notes, students learn to build harmony, (chords), from 2 notes, to 3, and thereafter, 4. Song repertoire is built from a variety of sources including published method books. Memorization of song repertoire is stressed.

After the student has learned the notes and scales in the first position as well as the associated chords, he/she can learn songs of his/her choosing from the Folk, Pop, Classical and Jazz repertoire that is appropriate to his/her current level.

Piano method books used include the Dozen-A-Day and Hanon technique exercises as well as the Schaum and Michael Aaron method book series'.

NYSSMA training/coaching is available for both piano and guitar with suitable training beginning a least a year before the NYSSMA audition is to take place.

The Guitar student should have a good quality guitar, (steel strings, nylon strings, or steel-string electric) professionally set-up with light-gauged strings (for the beginners), a strap, a music stand, and time and space in the home in order to encourage a daily routine of practice.

The Piano student should have daily access to a piano or keyboard instrument with weighted keys in order to be able to practice lesson material daily.

For young students, a practice chart is given where a student is to mark his/her practice time in order for progress to be made.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a dedicated room in my home that is set up for private practice and teaching. It has an electronic piano, folding chairs, a music stand and guitar amplifiers and cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring an acoustic guitar with me to all out-going lessons so that I can play along with the student and demonstrate techniques as necessary. I bring extra blank sheets of music writing paper, fret board diagrams, and study sheets, as well as extra copies of the books I use most frequently. I can purchase books/materials for the student, with the student's or parent/guardian's reimbursement, or the student may purchase materials on their own.

With over 20 years teaching experience, Nick is patient with children & adults. He has a creative, unique pedagogy emphasizing hearing through singing, ear-training & natural, organic listening. Nick instills healthy absorption of music while students have fun learning their music, sight reading, internalizing with focus on rhythm and time.
As a student, you will get to work on music that you, the student select as well as work on sight-reading, technique, ear-training. We will also work out of method books and use other sources of information.

Chairs, music stands, instrument stands, classical foot pedals, classical guitar pillows, guitar amps, guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, drum set. Nick's pedagogy emphasizes ear-training, singing, reading and truly hearing the music we are working on. Rather than rote teaching and guitar tablature, he instills natural listening, transcribing, sight-reading and proper technique. Lessons are always enjoyable as Nick observes each student's unique needs and listen's to their song preferences and musical goals. Students have the opportunity to learn pieces and genres they select and they are trained to figure out tunes by ear (ear-training) and transcribe.

Learning the Ins and Outs of Guitar Playing

I must say that I am please with Jamie's technique and patience with me. Jamie is very knowledgable and shares some of his secrets (not shortcuts mind you) that help in learning to master the acoustic guitar. He leaves you with valuable lessons and exercises that can do nothing but improve on how you play the guitar. I'm looking forward to continuing my lessons with Jamie.

I also attended Berklee School of Music from 1983 to 1984, and studied bass performance, ear training and arranging. I wasn't Tom's student per se but he and I went over lots of material for our various cover bands and he's a very thorough, patient teacher, very adamant about getting parts exactly right but willing to listen to occasional disagreements. highly recommended!

my experience

Tom really knows his way around a bass. Each time I go for a lesson, i leave happy about the things we've accomplished in the lesson. Anything that i would like to learn Tom makes it possible for me to do so. I started getting lessons in order to not slow down on my playing. With my schedule constantly changing Tom has been very nice at accommodating when possible.

I endorse this teacher highly!

I was having trouble finding a teacher by word-of-mouth - prospective teachers would not return phone calls and seems to have little interest in my son's musical education. Ever since Take Lessons contacted Lesley-Ann on my behalf, we have been in consistent contact. She has followed through on her promises, presented an appropriate enthusiasm for the job, and seems to have really inspired my teenage son to want to play the piano, and view this as a great opportunity. I love music theory for it's ability to organize and clarify the rich and complex musical world, and I often find myself getting as excited about theory as I do about performance. I have studied traditional theory and jazz harmony as well as George Russell's Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization. I often use theory to demystify very many styles of music from pop and rock to classical and jazz to the exotic sounds of North Africa and Eastern Europe.

I am a jazz trumpeter, improviser, and composer as well as an avid listener and enthusiastic educator. I maintain an active performance schedule playing improvised music as well as funk, soul, afro-beat, reggae, hip-hop, and American folk music. In addition to trumpet, I have experience performing and recording on slide trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, and french horn. I write and arrange music for my own groups and regularly write and record horn arrangements for folk, pop, and reggae groups. I have attended Berklee College of Music and Ithaca College, and I have a Master's degree in jazz trumpet performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

I have over nine years of experience working with students ages 7 to adult. I have worked both from my home studio and though several public and community music school program

As an educator, my aim is to inspire in my students an enthusiasm for the artistic performance of music of any style. I strive to convey my own excitement for the art to young trumpeters and improvisers, and I have worked to encourage self-motivation and a longstanding interest in musical self-expression in elementary through high school students and adults. I have experience performing many styles of music from jazz and experimental improvised music to funk, reggae, and afro-beat, and I use my knowledge of divergent genres to encourage creative experimentation and convey the expressive artistic elements shared by all music. As an improviser I am particularly interested in teaching the theory and philosophy of spontaneous composition and musical communication.

I have taken the trumpet lessons with Bobby S. for about two years now. What I really appreciate most about Bobby is his patience. As an older student, it can be very challenging to learn trumpet. Bobby presents his lesson in a way that is easy to understand. He takes the time to explore what my difficulties are. Then he presents me with ways to challenge them. Bobby also has a good understanding of music theory. He explains and demonstrates musical concepts very thoroughly.

I started taking lessons from Brian as a 40 year old complete beginner. I would highly recommend him as an ​extremely knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging teacher... not to mention an amazing musician.

Brian not only teaches you the fundamentals of your specific instrument he also teaches you about music in general! He has such an understanding of so many genres which helped me become very versatile. Brian not only made me a fantastic "bassist" he made me a fantastic "musician". His teachings have opened the doors for me to pursue a very succesful career in the music business, appearing on several records and embarking on national tours.

Students will learn scales, chords, arpeggios, lead sheet reading, four-part writing, and more. Lessons will be tailored based on the student's experience and interest.

About Andrew
Andrew started playing piano at age 8. When he was 16 he picked up a bass guitar and never looked back.

At Gaithersburg High School, Andrew played bass in the Jazz Orchestra, and picked up the tuba for Marching Band. He also played in a few local punk bands.

At American University, Andrew studied bass under Dr. Josh Bayer, developing his improvising, listening, and writing skills which he utilized in the Jazz Orchestra, Contemporary Music Workshop, and countless jam sessions. He also developed his musicianship with classes on music theory, ear training, and sight-singing.

After graduating with a BA in Audio Production and Music in the spring of 2016, Andrew continues to gig with his indie rock band Calm & Crisis.
