Barry received a master of arts degree in music (composition) from CUNY Hunter College and a bachelor of music degree in Music Engineering Technology from the University of Miami, studied composition at the Juilliard School and music for film at NYU. I have been playing drums and percussion since the ripe old age of 9, in 4th grade. Originally wanting to play the clarinet, my music teacher thought my sense of rhythm was too good to waste and placed me in the drum section. I was the only kid who didn't want to play drums. Twenty years later here I am, a professional freelancing percussionist and teacher. The journey to where I am was a long and winding one but I can't imagine it any other way. After learning basic drumming in elementary sch
ool, I continued through middle school. There I was placed on drum kit and thought I was the coolest. I didn't take it too seriously but serious enough to keep playing drum kit. When choosing high schools I wasn't interested in keeping with drums. I only took marching band because it meant no gym. After my first year I was placed in every band the next three years, having to learn timpani and marimba for concert band. I was also recommended to join a city wide concert band, InterSchool orchestras of New York, and haven't left since. I still coach the band and help tons of high school and middle school students hone their craft. Also that year, through ISO, I was given a chance to attend French woods performing arts camp on scholarship where I began my love of playing in musical pit orchestras. Through this time I studied with a couple of teachers and had plenty of coachings with professional percussionists. Upon graduating I have played well over 100 different musicals, played with over 25 different orchestras, and have taught over 100 students both privately and in coachings. I currently run a Drumline out of a private school, coach ISO band, freelance and have a studio of 8 students. That is a short sample of my journey and I hope it inspires you to study with me.

If you choose me as a teacher, I will shape you as an overall musician, not just a "Drummer". What this means is that you won't just learn beats from me, you will learn all the fundamentals of basic to intermediate music theory, from note reading and rhythm to chord changes and ..... You will start on a practice pad and quickly go to a drum kit. Lessons will be half and half, but more 75/25 drumkit, because everything you learn on a pad can translate to the kit! I would also teach you timpani and xylophone if you like so you can broaden your horizons and even get into the middle/high school or college you want. I have most of my books of pdf that I can give you to print or you can purchase your own copies. You would also need to purchase a practice pad and eventually a drum kit. If you don't want to purchase a drum kit then there is almost no reason to study it since you won't be able to practice between lessons. Practicing, let's talk about that. It is expected that you practice the material we learn in the lesson throughout the week. Now I know everyone is busy, but if you can put aside 25 minutes (a sitcom without commercials!!) a day then you will have a better understanding and better retention of the material. Doing this will let us just review the material a little bit and go on to learn new and exciting things.

The bottom line in choosing me? I am a professional musician in the trenches of the nyc music scene and know what it takes to make it.

Applauded for his “gleaming trumpet work” (Hyde Park Herald), Justin B. is a versatile musician, performing on both historical and modern trumpets. He specializes in early music, most notably in difficult high-register music for Baroque trumpet. Before formally studying Baroque trumpet, Justin won first prize in multiple historical instruments divisions of the National Trumpet Competition. Dr. B. is now often sought as a Baroque trumpeter by numerous ensembles throughout North America. He has performed on period instruments with Musica Angelica, Apollo’s Fire, the American Bach Soloists, Tempesta di Mare, Lyra Baroque, Bach Collegium San Diego, Baroque Band, Madison Bach Musicians, Handel Choir of Baltimore, Early Music Alberta, Magnolia Baroque Festival, Oregon Bach Festival, the Washington Bach Consort, Chantry, Orchestra of the 17th Ce
ntury, the Jubilate Orchestra, Choral Arts Philadelphia, Mannheim Rocket, and the Washington Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble. For the 2015-2016 season, in addition to engagements in the U.S. and Canada, Justin will be performing on Baroque trumpet in Europe.

As a modern trumpeter, Justin has experience performing in orchestras, wind ensembles, jazz ensembles, pit orchestras for opera and musical theater, British brass bands, and numerous chamber ensembles. Before beginning his college career, he was principal trumpeter of the DC Youth Orchestra and had the opportunity to tour Japan as a trumpet soloist. He also performed regularly with the Prince George’s Philharmonic while in high school. More recently, he as appeared as a soloist with the South Dakota Symphony, the Firelands Symphony, and the Las Vegas Sinfonietta.

In addition to be being a trumpeter, Justin is also a countertenor and has sung with Apollo’s Fire and Opera Cleveland. While in Ohio, he was an alto section leader in the chamber and chancel choirs at Trinity Cathedral in downtown Cleveland and was the countertenor with Cantores Cleveland (now Contrapunctus). In addition, Justin briefly served as a bass section leader at Church of the Covenant in Cleveland. Justin also plays recorder.

Justin recently earned his DMA in trumpet performance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He received his MA in early music performance practices from Case Western and his BM in trumpet performance from the University of Maryland. His primary trumpet teachers include Chris Gekker, Barry Bauguess, Steven Hendrickson, Steven Trinkle, and Justin Emerich. He has studied voice with Delores Zeigler, Ellen Hargis, and Aaron Sheehan. As a graduate assistant, Justin taught courses in ear training and music appreciation, and was a harpsichord tuner.

I can't compare Justin with any other teacher as my child has had only one trumpet instructor; but I believe they do not come much, if any better, than Justin! He is a natural teacher. He is punctual, caring, patient, encouraging, and most professional. I especially like the way he consistently corrects the "little" bad habits that may become a monumental problem later. I consider it an honor having my child being taught by Justin.

I am a private woodwind instructor and professional freelance musician. My main instrument is saxophone and I double on flute, teaching both with the addition of beginner to intermediate clarinet. I've been Brian's student for several years now.

I've tried several teachers in the past who spoke very vaguely when explaining things. My favorite thing about Brian is that he explains things very clearly and scientifically. I am now able to navigate through my high registers much more effortlessly.

Singing has become more enjoyable now that my technique has advanced. Brian's wonderfully warm and encouraging personality certainly helped as well!

On top of that, the price was super reasonable and totally worth it.

Brian is a great vocal teacher. Before I started taking voice lessons from him I almost completely believed I could never learn to sing high notes. For a while I believed it was impossible. Although, just after a few lessons with Brian he helped me discover places I thought my voice could never reach. I definitely do not regret any of the sessions because he has helped me improve my singing tremendously! Brian is so passionate about his job he gets pretty technical. He goes in great detail and in scientific detail too if he has to. Not only does he have great knowledge in vocals but he is also a fun, easy-going character. I highly recommend him!

As an entertainer, singing has always been the one thing i could never get, but really wanted. Even harmonizing was an impossible task for me. Within the 1st lesson, BrIan got me to a level that was actually bearable to the human ear. Within a couple months of lessons, not only was my (singing) voice in pitch and in tune, but i was auditioning for roles that required singing!

The tools i received here not only helped with my singing, but also my Voice Over work, and getting ready for filming and auditions(just speaking). My voice never sounded so good!

I have been to a few voice coaches in the past (per my agent's request), and Brian's coaching takes the cake. He keeps it simple, does not give a cookie-cutter approach (its personalized), and it helps that Brian is an outstanding singer, so that you have something to listen to and mimic as you go through the exercises (believe it or not i've been to voice coaches who can't sing...yes, really).
