Music theory is most effective when put into practice on an instrument, so all students are recommended to bring their instrument with them to lessons as we analyze music of different backgrounds, ranging from traditional classical theory to modern jazz. I want students to better understand the music they interact with everyday, understanding form, harmony, and arranging techniques.

About Adrian
Music has played a big role in my life ever since I was 4 and heard The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night." From that point on, I committed myself towards a life in music, soon after beginning lessons on classical guitar. Through high school I studied classical and jazz guitar at Philadelphia's esteemed Settlement Music School, and I subsequently attended New York University as a jazz studies major in both guitar and composition for a bachelors and masters degree.

As a teacher, I love to pair my academic knowledge of music with my decades of experience listening to and playing popular music ranging from rock and funk to bluegrass and hip hop. I've performed in settings ranging from jazz clubs in Italy, to theater in New York, and rock clubs in Philadelphia. In my lessons I like to bring that diverse experience to create a curriculum tha
t compliments the interests of the student.

*** Lesson Details ***
In a private lesson setting I like to say, "What you put in is what you'll get out." Students who show up having practiced a lot, who are eager to dive in depth into a subject, will grow immensely in a short amount of time. Those who are interested in practicing guitar as a casual activity also have plenty to gain, and I try to push my students in accordance with their interest level.

As a teacher, I like to support my students' personal ambitions on the instrument and with music on the whole, drawing on a wide range of materials. My goal is to put the proper resources in front of my students and ask them questions that will push them to discover the elements of music they knew they were looking for and some they didn't.

Every student has personal goal, and I like to draw on my diverse background in music to help each of mine achieve theirs.

Adrian is not only great guitar player but also a great teacher. I had taken private lesson since summer of 2015 and had a great learning experience on both playing classical guitar and understanding a music in general. He breaks down a piece and tries to help me understand how the music should be played and suggests different ways to approach no matter how simple a piece is. I would recommend for classical guitar and big thumbs up!

Fun and Inspiring

Adrian's teaching style has helped me to understand the music pieces in an intuitive way. His ability to breakdown a complex concept into simple ones makes the learning fun and natural. Adrain makes the lessons interesting by discussing the music piece in length and also by sharing the music history behind it. He lets the student decide the pace of learning, but at the same time nudges him to take the next step. I will recommend Adrian to anyone who is interested in learning music.

I would highly recommend Adrian.

Adrian's passion for music really comes through in his lessons, always making lessons both informative and fun. Having no prior experience with the guitar before taking lessons from Adrian, he really catered to my strengths and passion points to find a teaching method that suited me well. It wasn't long before I was able to play a song and all the while, in addition to learning the very basics, Adrian also tuned into music theory and songwriting, which gave our lessons great depth. Hello All!
I am a guitarist/composer/educator who holds a M.A. Jazz Performance degree from the Aaron Copeland School of Music at Queens College. I also have a B.A. Music degree with a concentration in classical guitar performance from Buffalo State College in my hometown of Buffalo, NY. However, most of my training and experience comes from playing many different styles of music with many brilliant musicians on the scenes of Buffalo and New York.
If there is just one thing I know about music, it is that playing music is supposed to be fun and satisfying! It is my job to help my students maintain that mindset as they navigate their way through the obstacles of musical growth.
One of the reasons why I teach is the sense of fulfillment I get watching my students learn and improve. Its something I take great pride in. Another

*** Lesson Details ***
In my 7-plus years of professional teaching experience I have encountered students from all walks of life. All of them have come from very diverse musical backgrounds and interests. I have taught students from ages 5 to 75 styles of music ranging from Metallica to Michael Jackson, Miles Davis to Justin Timberlake, and everything in between. I construct my lessons based on the student's skill level, musical taste, and personal goals. Students will be encouraged to learn the music that is aesthetically pleasing to them, while gaining knowledge of how to build a solid foundation in guitar playing and overall musicianship.

P.S. (to parents of younger students)

Studying music and learning an instrument has been proven to increase levels of focus and overall attention span in many young children. Several parents whose children I work with, ages 5-10 or so, have noticed attention and concentration levels trending upward in their child's other school work and activities as a result of studying music and learning the guitar!

I am excited to write a review for our awesome guitar instructor~! Our little 8 (just turned 9) year old son took lessons prior Mr. Brown for about 6 months and couldn't remember a thing he learned in his lessons and had no motivation to practice. However, since we met Mr. Brown, our son has been so motivated! Only after his second lesson, he understood how to read notes, he was engaged, and must've picked up his guitar to practice at least 3 times a day for a good 20-30 minutes on his own (under no request by Mr. Brown)!

Mr. Brown is very knowledgeable and an amazing instructor! He patiently goes step by step to make sure all the basis for a firm foundation in music is there and then thoroughly goes to all the steps to keep it simple in learning! He builds great rapport and brings his personal experience to make him more relatable! I would highly recommend Mr. Brown as an instructor!

I started playing guitar seriously at the age of 12 and have been a guitar teacher for 22 years. My first influences were rock and metal. In my later teens, I became very interested in other music genres such as jazz, fusion and classical. I began my formal music education as a Classical Guitar performance major, ultimately obtaining a Masters Degree in Music Composition from the Queens College Aaron Copland School of Music.

The road I have taken with music has been paved with many unexpected twists and turns. Throughout my many years of learning and making new discoveries, I have now arrived at a point where I am able to productively incorporate knowledge from various experiences with music and education into my own creativity and teaching. Marco is one of the best teacher ever, I knew him way back in 1997 when I first came in to the state. At first, one of my friend was taking the session and he didn't mind me just staying and observed. After a few classes, I decided to go with Marco. As a new immigrant, language barrier is a problem. He 's patiently teach me from a to z. Making sure I understand everything. Although, I knew some of the basic of the guitar. I was surprisingly I could learn how to read music. Be able to improvise with him during lesson. You're not just learning how to play song/guitar. You learn music theory all in a packet. I still remember one day I was playing in the local shop in HK, people was whispering this guy is good. This is a good memory that I have until now.

I was a student of Marco's for about two-almost three years, and his excitement, love, desire, wisdom and passion for music and teaching is something that can't be described in words. Marco is a teacher that likes to have fun with whatever it is he may be teaching, but he is also very serious about it to make sure his students learn what they want in the best way possible to them. He will encourage his students if they need it and congratulate you every time you complete whatever it is you may have learned from him. I mostly learned techniques/songs from artist's such as Randy Rhoads, Angus Young, and much more from Marco. He will not let you down. He won't give up on you. I would gladly learn from him any time /any chance I'd get.

Marco has been teaching my son how to play the guitar since 2008. I feel that we were blessed having Marco as my son's first teacher. He really understood him and I was brought to tears at his very first recital when I was amazed how much he had learned in just a short few months. He is a senior in HS now and he has a love for the guitar and a passion to learn new music on his own.
Marco is an exceptional teacher who is very patient and understands his students and listens to their needs. He is extremely talented and anyone would be very lucky to have him as their music instructor. I recommend him highly. He is the best!

About Juan
New York city composer and guitarist Juan Calderon is a native of Ecuador raised in Colombia. He immigrated to Miami at age 20 to escape the political climate of the late 90’s, and resides in Manhattan since 2008.

Juan’s music blends elements from his unique life experiences, having been raised as an only child by a single mother in a bohemian environment. He was a recording and touring rock guitarist in Colombia, and he has studied East Asian music extensively, inspired by interaction with musicians and artists in China, Japan, and Indonesia.

His latest accomplishments include a performance of his composition “Reino Incierto” at Carnegie Hall (2015) and Sounds of the City, as well as a performance of his guitar quartet composition “Rising” by the UK guitar quartet.

Juan Calderon currently studies classical guitar with Mark D
elPriora, chair of the Guitar Department at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a master degree in composition. His mentors include composers Susan Botti, Reiko Fueting, and electronic music pioneer Joel Chadabe. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Florida, where he studied jazz guitar with Tom Lippincott, and composition with Susan Epstein-Garcia.

Juan is also an avid cartoonist, collector of rare books and little cars, food adventurer and runner.

*** Lesson Details ***
Guitar teaching encompasses many disciplines. One has to be a bit of a psychologist in order to gauge a potential student needs and musical sensibilities. The mathematical aspect of musical notation and rhythm makes us part mathematicians. In the end, there is also a self-actualizing aspect to guitar teaching in the sense that we are always witness to those moments that made us decide a career on music.
During my years of guitar teaching I have encountered many types of students, and I have learned from them as much as they have learned from me as they make me question aspects of music that I would have never thought about. I have learned to not take for granted the definition of concepts such as rhythm and harmony, and to look at guitar technique from different perspectives as I find ways to accommodate to a student’s capabilities. Ultimately, it is also a job that requires a lot of planning and structure. My first step, generally, is to assess the student’s ability and interest to find material suitable for them. Then, I proceed to familiarize with the student’s musical tastes and sensibilities to assign practice material accordingly. For example, if the student is interested in rock or pop music, we will work on a particular song that fits his level and also solves a particular technical problem. During that process I will answer any of the student’s questions, and provide insight into musical terminology. We will also work on basic concepts of rhythm, melody, and harmony. My training as a composer and jazz guitarists also enables me to tap into the student’s creative side. In that case, we would start with a basic blues progression and blues scales, and work on the basics of improvisation or songwriting.

Juan is wonderful and very knowledgeable in music. He is very patient and makes you feel comfortable. I leave a lesson feeling like I am accomplished and relaxed. It nice to see progress in such a little time. I go home with enthusiasm to learn more and want practice to do so.

With a patient and intuitive approach, Juan tailors each lesson to fit not only the student’s skill level, but also desire for depth of understanding. When I first began taking lessons, I was only able to plunk a few chords and play along with a few basic songs. However, over the course of a year and a half with Juan, I gained a foundational knowledge of the classical guitar, as well as the confidence to site read and play a range of other styles of guitar music. He seamlessly integrated music theory concepts into song studies, helping me learn major/minor scales and chord shapes, and then apply this knowledge to better understand song structures and composition. It has been such a great experience learning from Juan, especially because he is both an exemplary teacher and guitar player!

Throughout my time at Berklee, NEC, and now Juilliard, I have studied with many great teachers and musicians from Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Henderson, Kenny Barron, Tiger Okoshi, John McNeil, and Laurie Frink to Jerry Bergonzi, and Miguel Zenon. The diverse subjects we went over in lessons and classes gives me a unique knowledge of certain styles and musical ideas. I try to be as personal and individual as I can when it comes to teaching students. That was the thing that stood out amongst my favorite teachers.

About David
At 28 years old, David Neves is one of the most active and exciting trumpet players in New York and Boston’s jazz scene. Neves was awarded a full scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There, he was chosen to be a member of the prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute. Through this program, David had the privilege of studying and performing with some of the most accomplished and well-known jazz musicians in the world, including Wayne Shorter, Dave Liebman, Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, Joe Lovano, and George Garzone. Neves then attended the prestigious New England Conservatory where he received his Master’s of Music in Jazz Performance.

A world-class musician, David’s talents have sent him all over the globe to venues such as the Tokyo Jazz Festival, Torino Jazz Festival, Panama Jazz Festival, and the Newport Ja
zz Festival. In 2010, Neves traveled to Sydney, Australia, where he won first prize in the International Trumpet Guild’s Jazz Solo Competition. Recently, Neves was faculty at the 2016 Torino Jazz Festival where he conducted masterclasses, as well as the advanced ensemble that was featured at the festival, performing “April 14th, 2013” from his debut album, “Progress Report.”

In February 2014, David independently released Progress Report, his first full-length album as a leader and composer. This project debuts intriguing, all-original music, and David is joined by some of the finest young musicians in Boston and New York.

A recent recipient of the prestigious Artist Diploma in Jazz Studies at the Juilliard School under the direction of Wynton Marsalis, Greg Gisbert, and Ben Wolfe; David is currently performing and teaching in the New York, and Boston areas including a weekly Sunday residency in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Birdland Jazz Club in Midtown Manhattan with the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra with Arturo O'Farrill.

I have been playing the violin for 20 years, and I've studied with world-renowned teachers across the globe; at Oberlin Conservatory, Indiana University, Moscow Central Special School, and Juilliard. I have a passion for teaching and have been doing so since 2008. I teach privately but also have experience with group settings in an elementary school. I'm happy and comfortable teaching all levels of students, in violin, viola, piano, and voice! I use a combination of my own method, Suzuki, and String Pedagogy IU. I tutored music theory and ear training during my undergraduate studies.

I believe students, no matter the age, background, or means, can achieve great music making and enjoy a fun and satisfactory journey doing so. I am experienced in using Suzuki, Indiana String Pedagogy, some Kodaly, and my own method, to foster this learning. Augusta holds a B.M. degree from the Oberlin Conservatory and a M.M. degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She will begin studies at The Juilliard School in the Fall of 2015 for baroque violin, as proud recipient of a Kovner Fellowship. Recent highlights include a performance as chamber musician with members of the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, Apollo's Fire, in their Bach Family Frolic concert series in January 2015.
In the 2015-2016 season, Augusta will perform as concerto soloist with the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, with the Bach A minor Violin Concerto. Augusta performs as an apprentice with Apollo's Fire and is a substitute violinist with Boston Baroque. She has collaborated on stage with members of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra during their Winter Institute, and was invited to play in a Tafelmusik masterclass for renowned violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch.
On modern violin she has worked under such conductors as Kurt Masur, Michael Tilson Thomas, Alan Gilbert, James Gaffigan, David Zinman, and Robert Spano.
Augusta holds a Bachelor of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in violin performance, with a minor in historical performance, graduating at age 19 with honors (Pi Kappa Lambda Society). Her principal teachers were Milan Vitek (modern violin) and Marilyn McDonald (baroque violin). She currently is pursuing her Masters of Music in violin performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, under the tutelage of Alexander Kerr and Stanley Ritchie. She spent an exchange semester in 2011-12 at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, with Johannes Leertouwer and Sophie Gent.
She began her violin studies at the age of three with the Suzuki Violin School Method, continuing her studies in Moscow, Russia at the age of 12 with Zoya Makhtina of the Moscow Central Special Music School. Throughout her childhood, Augusta studied privately with Gregory Fulkerson and Almita and Roland Vamos.
Her related teaching coursework includes classes at Oberlin Conservatory and Indiana University, in pedagogy. She has studied string pedagogy methods with Mimi Zweig and Joanne Erwin. Augusta has extensive experience teaching students of all ages, in both private and group settings. She uses a combination of her own method, Suzuki, and String Pedagogy IU.

I very much appreciated Augusta's efficient and organized usage of curriculum. She taught two of my children in their highschool years. Augusta works with Suzuki and other methods, and creates a wonderful combination that really helps get the most of one's musical and violinistic goals. She is both persistent and fun. Doesn't let anything slide, but at the same time makes learning effortless and fun. Both my kids enjoyed working with her very much. She seems to work well with all ages and personalities. Augusta is also very friendly, and easy to schedule with. I would definitely recommend her to anyone.

I am a professional singer, pianist, and teacher of the two. I have a Bachelor of Music degree from California State University Long Beach, and a Master of Music degree from University of California Los Angeles. During my study of those two degrees, I had marvelous teaching from some of the finest pianists, coaches, and voice teachers around. I can teach you how to sing with true passion, ease, and intent.

I began my study of the piano at the age of 7, my mother being my first teacher. I started on Alfred Piano Books, and still strongly believe in that same curriculum. From there I began to study classical composers like Chopin, Beethoven, Clementi, and Mozart. Although my love of classical music runs deep to my core, I love jazz, pop, and gospel music. Lyle has a singing voice that will stun and amaze you when he sings in front of you. That will immediately put you at ease and motivate you to sing better using his techniques. His classical training has proven to be a great foundation for teaching me effective ways to understand, use and improve my voice. After 2 lessons I can already see a big difference in my singing abilities and I always learn many new things at each lesson. Lyle has a really open, friendly and non judgemental demeanor and this helped a lot with my nervousness. I can't wait for my next private lesson and would encourage anyone to book him for Broadway, classical and pop singing lessons.

Lyle taught my two kids for 3 years. They loved him! My son took piano and voice lessons each week, 30mins of the two, and my daughter took only piano lessons. I can't recommend him enough!

My violin sonata Amerigo has been performed in nearly all 50 states as part of my 50 State Sonata Project, and my melodic music has been praised as “arrestingly poetic” (BMOP) and “wide ranging, imaginative” (Portland Press Herald).

My string orchestra works are published by TRN Music and my chamber and orchestral music is published by Femoire. I am a graduate of Roosevelt University in Chicago and the New England Conservatory in Boston. 

I am a frequent lecturer at universities and high schools, often speaking on the subjects of creativity, entrepreneurship, and how to create a career after music school.
