My lessons are designed with each individual student in mind. I will start my lesson with introduction and proceed with warm-up routine. I always make sure that the student is comfortable with the pace that I am offering. I am mixing elements of music theory, history and performance techniques in order to help my student to embrace the beauty of music making experience. All my students are ready to perform at the recital after just 3-4 months of lessons.

It was my first lesson and now I have some idea how hold the violin and the bow. My homework is to practice a few notes on each string and then to practice playing the A scale. I think I can do it in two octaves. What is challenging is to play the scale without hearing a screeching sound. I'm looking forward to playing like Sarah Chang (hopefully after five lessons).

For my beginning violin students, I have found the Essential Elements Series to be highly effective, as well as the Suzuki methodology. All lessons will typically start with scales/arpeggios and be followed with the selected piece(s) we have chosen together. All of my students will attest that I set clear and high expectations for every lesson, yet am very understanding, friendly and approachable right from the start. My goal is to provide every individual with the tools necessary for becoming a well-rounded musician, so that they too can share their love for music with others.

About Michael
Beginning his cello instruction at the age of 8, Michael spent the majority of his early years under the guidance of Nancy Hambleton-Torrente, current director of music for the Yorktown public school districts in Westchester county. During his undergraduate years, he attended Colgate University where he received a B.A. in both Music and Psychology. While at Colgate, Michael had the privilege of studying with cellist Florent Renard-Payen, founder and director of the esteemed Tarob Cello Ensemble. Upon graduation, Michael continued his studies at Montclair State University where he received an Artist Diploma in performance. Under the guidance of Nicholas Tzavaras of the Shanghai String Quartet, Michael performed two solo recitals for the John J. Cali School of Music before further pursuing his studies in the studio of Marc T. Johnson of the
Vermeer Quartet. From 2012 to 2014, Michael served as principal cellist of the Symphony Orchestra at Hunter College while concurrently earning a Masters degree in Music Education. He graduated with summa cum laude honors in 2014 and began his teaching career with the New York City Department of Education later that year.

At present, Michael is director of Orchestral activities at P.S. 205 Clarion in Brooklyn N.Y. and principal cellist of the Riverside Orchestra on the upper west side of Manhattan. He runs a full private teaching studio and actively gigs in and around the greater New York City area. He has also played in numerous master classes for world renowned cellists such as Lynn Harrell and Andres Diaz, and has had the privilege of working with esteemed conductors such as Marietta Cheng of the Southern Finger Lakes Orchestra, Paul Hostetter, Chair of Orchestral Activities for the Schwob School of Music, and Rueben Blundell, current Conductor and Music Director of the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra, the Hunter Symphony and the Riverside Orchestra.

While Michael does enjoy a busy academic and teaching schedule, he believes that part of the joy of being a working musician is having the ability to share his love of music with others, something he feels both honored and privileged to be able to do.

My teaching philosophy is one that tailors to the specific needs, interests and abilities of each individual. Throughout my years of private instruction, I have learned that no two individuals learn and/or think the same way. Thus, for some students I have found the Suzuki method to be highly effective, while for others I have been more comprehensive with my instruction, incorporated scales, etudes, sonatas, concerti and Bach suites for a more well rounded approach. I have been taking lessons with Michael for over a year now. I've taken lessons before with other instructors (though not in cello). Michael is one of the best instructors that I have ever had. He instructs and challenges you to get better, while at the same time being patient with your development. It has been a pleasure being a student of Michael.

About Penny
Born in Cebu City, Philippines in 1990, raised primarily in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries, and pursuing further education in the United States of America, Hopengrace ("Penny") is a Global Nomad currently situated in the Greater New York City Area.

She started taking music lessons from her mother at the age of four and learned to read music at the same time she started to read storybooks. ​From the age of ten, Hopengrace took violin lessons, during her parents' rare furloughs, from Mr. Frederico Regner, a World War II veteran returned from the United States. While in the Philippines for a combined year of junior and senior level high school, she took violin lessons from Mr. Marc Hamlet Mercado and Mr. Rodelio Flores. Hopengrace has also taken coaching from Ms. Princess Christine Ybañez to prepare for competit
ion in the Solo String (Bowed) category of the 14th National Student Convention in which she won 2nd Place.

In 2007, Hopengrace received a Presidential Scholarship from Tennessee Temple University (TTU). There she studied violin under Mrs. Laura Minor (B.Mus. Vanderbilt University, MA Music NYU). She also took piano from Mrs. Carolyn Kemp​ (BS Mus.Ed. Baptist Bible College, MA Mu. Ed. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga) and voice from Dr. William Knowles and Mr. Michael Mays (BS Mus. Perf. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, MA Church Music Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary).

In 2008, as a member of TTU's Weigle Concert Choir, Hopengrace had the privilege to be chosen to sing with a combined choir in Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium with the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Dr. David Thye, Principal Conductor-in-Residence of MidAmerica Productions. She became a member of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Youth Orchestra (CSOYO) ​in the fall of that year and continued performing with them for three seasons. She also participated in the special orchestra for the annual Chattanooga Boys' Choir "Singing Christmas Tree" concerts at the Tivoli Theatre. In 2010, world-renowned violinist Midori chose CSOYO as one of two youth orchestras for her annual Orchestra Residencies Program, and Hopengrace had the rare opportunity to perform with one of her inspirations in concert.

Hopengrace​ became a registered Suzuki Method Violin Teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas on July 2011. She has also trained in Orff-Schulwerk.

During her travels around the world, Hopengrace struggled to keep her art alive. However, she has often been complemented for her distinctive strong, full-bodied tone​ and adaptability. Her range varies from Baroque to Modern. She plays on a John Cheng 1737 "King Joseph" Guarneri model violin with both wood and carbon fiber bows.

​Hopengrace welcomes students and employment while she prepares for entrance in a Master of Music in Performance program. She hopes to start on that new chapter of her life in the fall of 2013. Inspired by the impact of Venezuela's El Sistema program and her own experiences during her travels, Hopengrace hopes to use her talents to enable or build similar programs both while she teaches and in the lands where she was raised. ​

As a teacher, my goal is to instruct as well as inspire each student to reach for his or her highest potential. I hope to give each student the tools to progress so that one day they can be their own best teacher, and play with a sound and style that is uniquely their own. Most importantly, I hope to instill a desire to learn and a mindset that the art of violin playing is fun and that it is just as we call it--playing. My teaching abilities range from beginning through advanced levels. Students must have a desire to learn and commit to daily (mindful) practice.

I am a Suzuki Violin teacher. This means that I am trained to work with even the youngest of musicians in a nurturing , fun and challenging way. Dr. Suzuki believed that it was important to develop a noble character in all children through the mastery of a musical instrument. He also believed that all children were capable of this mastery if the environment is saturated with music and love. My students enjoy playing the violin because they are given the tools they need to play beautifully and to make progress on their instrument. Each lesson will focus on proper set up and posture, technical work and musical direction/ideas that will inspire them to carry on their work throughout the week. I demonstrate quite a bit in the lessons, as I find it is the most effective way to communicate in music. However, I am only with the student once a week, therefore much of the lesson is geared towards helping the parent and child understand what his/her home tasks are, and how to carry them out successfully. 10 minutes of mindful practice is worth an hour of careless work.

​Parental support and involvement is key to any child’s progress, especially at the beginning stages. Parents of young beginners are encouraged to take a few lessons before starting their child on the instrument. Parents serve as a practice coach/partner during daily home practice sessions and are required to attend and participate in their child’s lessons. Listening to recordings and attending live concerts are strongly recommended to increase musical awareness and enthusiasm in the student.

In spite of my rigorous Suzuki training, my unorthodox learning experience has taught me the value of being flexible and using methods that work best for a specific individual. I am not averse to seeking and applying a new method (eg. traditional, Masterclass, O'Connor, etc.) if the situation calls for it.

What should be expected from a Teacher/Student relationship?

I think a student should expect their teacher to give them honest, thoughtful feedback. Just enough that they can manage the information at that time. The teacher should give detailed instruction on ways the student can improve, without destroying the students sense of self worth or spirit. On the contrary, the teacher must always find a way to see the student as having great potential. This way, no matter how limited the current level of ability may be, there is hope for growth. Even without saying it, the student will feel the teachers' attitude towards him and may become that person (for better or for worse). The student should expect to be challenged, encouraged and inspired by their teacher. The teacher should expect that the student and the parents commit to daily practice, and have a desire to improve. The student must apply his/her teacher's feedback while always searching within himself for ways to develop. Mutual respect is key.

I have experience teaching students ages four through late 60’s, levels Pre-K through collegiate level. During my years of teaching, I have encountered and successfully instructed students of a wide variety of learning styles. From these experiences I have become adept at adapting my teaching methods on-the-spot in order to patiently, enthusiastically, and creatively introduce and reinforce concepts in a manner tailored to each student. In addition to equipping my students with proper violin technique and nurturing their musical integrity, my commitments as a teacher are to empower and assist my students in developing their communication skills and confidence, instill a lasting curiosity for learning, and foster a genuine love for the imaginative and expressive capabilities of music.

All of my students learn how to read music from the beginning of their playing. For addressing technique with young kids, I use fun pneumonic devices such as "pizza box hand," "flamingo arm," and "umbrella fingers," to help my students remember, identify, and visualize proper hand, arm, and finger placement. We practice note names and rhythm through singing and memorization games. With these activities, students practice at home on their own and advance weekly between lessons while developing a love for playing the violin.

Whether your child is a preparing for an audition for school, college, conservatory, a competition, or a complete beginner, I'll personalize lessons based on your/your child's specific goals and needs. I also accept adult students interested in picking up a new, rewarding hobby, or looking to improve their technique to join a community orchestra.

Lauren is an excellent teacher for adult students!

At the age of 54 I decided to purchase a violin and learn to play. I found Lauren Cauley through Takelessons.com and could not be more pleased with her!! She has taught me so much in my first four weeks. She's patient with me and encourages me when I get discouraged with my play. She is quick to answer the numerous questions I have. American violinist Emily V. is an active and versatile performer of chamber and orchestral music. As a chamber musician, Emily has appeared with the Mannes American Composers Ensemble in the ensemble's Alice Tully Hall debut. Additionally, she has collaborated with the Newman and Oltman Guitar Duo in a concert that has been broadcast on WWFM, and is a member of Trio des Waldes, a horn trio that has performed throughout NYC and on the Bucks County (PA) Performing Arts concert series.

My only requirement is that the student be hardworking in order to meet my standards. About Eunice
Born and raised in America, Korean-American violinist Eunice Park has been a classical musician for 10 years. She has a deep-rooted passion for teaching serious students and teaches with promise, diligence, and love. Although she is currently a high school student, she is also a senior at the Manhattan School of Music Pre-college division, and has studied under several renown professors, including (but are not limited to) Xiao Wang (Queen Elisabeth Competition finalist and Curtis graduate), and Elizabeth Chang (Juilliard pre-college professor). Park is willing to put extra time and effort to ensure her students their quick and steady improvement and nurture her students to the best of her abilities in order to help them succeed. Park has created many recordings and won several awards, including the New York International Competition of YW
CA, American Protege Competition, the NJIO Concerto Competition, the NJMTA Young Musician Competition, and a couple community service awards. Since age 12 she has performed in many different summer festivals, including the Saarburg Music Festival in Germany, Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival, and the Manhattan in the Mountains intensive summer camp, and made her official debut on stages including Merkin Hall and Carnegie Hall. Although Park is currently a student, she never fails to teach with vigor and a good heart. "If the student is a hardworker," she explains. "Then I will naturally be twice as hardworking. I'm that crazy teacher that will phone her student at 6am to make sure he or she is practicing." Park accepts beginner students through advanced students. I am a patient teacher, and passionate about teaching music. There are many aspects on learning how to play the violin. I focus on the sound a lot, so it will be a very short or almost to none screeching time when they play. To produce good sound, posture is number one thing. I like to build a student from a solid ground, so correct posture, right hand, left hand position, violin holding, and the whole body posture are all little pieces can make big differences in violin playing. By doing so, can make playing much easier, sounding beautiful, and make hard passages easier! And the correct posture will also help prevent the possibility from getting playing related injuries. I believe having inspiration is important too, listening to different music and great players can develop the ears, and also is a hugh inspiration to practice.

I am a professional violinist, pianist, string arranger, and recording artist. I have been teaching for over 20 years. Teaching students ages from four to adult.
I graduated from Peabody Conservatory with a Master of Music in violin performance.

Currently the solo violinist at Brooklyn Tabernacle. Performed in Radio City Hall, LeFrak Hall, Skirball Hall, Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, Queen’s Theatre, Vanderbilt Hall, Blue Note, Triad Theater, Lincoln Center, NY Times auditorium, Metropolitan Museum, Joe’s Pub, Hopkins’ Club. I am a member of Aisan Cutural Symphony, Brooklyn String Orchestra, Metro Chamber Orchestra, American Studio Orchestra, Manhattan Symphonie Orchestra, Fu-Jen Catholic University Orchestra- principal of second violin, and Taipei People Orchestra. Ms. Ma has performed productions with the local theatre such as “Cats”
, “Oklahoma”, “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Westside Story”, “ Mame”, and “Kings.” Solo at brooklyn Tabernacle Christmas production.

I also arranged string parts, recorded in numerous albums and string sessions, which included “Warmth & Light”, “African Skies”, “To Journal Square”, “Come to Me”, “Mosaic”. One of them was the Grammy award album “Mosaic” by the well-known jazz drummer Terri-Lyne Carrington, Gary Thomas “Pariah’s Pariah”.

Performed with many variety styles of bands such as Jazz, Gospel, contemporary Christian, Latin, Argentine Tango, Folk, Hip-hop, Pop, World, Rock, Peruvian, Romanian…etc. in the East Coast of America, China and Taiwan. She has been on Bronx local channel, Fox news, and Hooplaha, interviewed by the largest hiphop station for beat 1 from Apple Radio, performed with singer Rihanna, opended for Cyndi Lauper, solo for Nike Soho store for the new sportswear line.
