I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. My music students include children, working professionals, performing artists, and seniors. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. My training at Columbia University and with private instructors focused on classical repertoire and theory, but I also work with students on popular music (i.e.Pop, R&B, Electronica, and Folk). Music theory (i.e. sight reading, chord progressions) and practices from Linklater, Alexander, Williamson movement, and Art of Practicing techniques are incorporated into my music instruction.

What is my background?
I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. I have developed a keen ability to assess and shape talent from years of training, teaching, performing, and working with the head of Arts programs to conduct admissions interviews, student evaluations, and performances. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. My training at Columbia University and privately with notable musicians focused on classical repertoire and theory, but I also work with students on popular music (i.e. Pop, R&B, Electronica, and Folk).

What material is covered during lessons?
Music theory (i.e. sight reading, chord progressions) as well as posture,
artistic expression, interpretation, breathing, and finger and pitch placement techniques are incorporated into my music instruction. Cold reading, audition preparation and technique, Shakespeare, scene analysis, and business strategies are examples of topics that may be covered in acting instruction. Linklater (voice), Alexander, Williamson (movement), and Art of Practicing (piano) methods are also employed.

What are the profiles of my students?
My students come from different walks of life: children coming from school who bound excitedly to my lesson door; teenage artists who have the passion and vision but lack the technique; working adults who seek reprieve from the stress of work by singing/ learning an instrument that they've always wanted to play; and seniors who want a fun hobby to keep active. I enjoy teaching them and watching them master the fundamentals while developing their own performance style (or even composing their own music)!

What is my teaching style?
Based on feedback, students appreciate that I am a teacher with a warm personality whose supportive, passionate, and fun approach and effective techniques help them attain the following: 1) a firm understanding of the fundamentals of music theory or acting technique; 2) an ability to effectively learn how to perform and practice singing/playing/acting a piece; and 3) a style of performing that minimizes tension, produces beautiful sound or a dynamic character, and/or allows them to fully express themselves. After a few months, students should have sound knowledge of all three.

My students and I connect, in part, because I remember being like them. On stage, I started out dancing and acting; I delved into singing and songwriting and then fell in love with playing the piano. The day that I learned how to merge those passions (i.e. singing while playing the piano) was one of the happiest days of my life! Now, whether I'm performing Shakespeare on stage, playing Chopin and Beethoven, or singing while playing tunes by Whitney Houston, I still get excited. Hopefully, I fuel that excitement in you, too!

What is the lesson structure?
Due to the comprehensive nature of my teaching style and structure, students above the age of 6 take lessons for 60 minutes; 30-minute lessons are only available for children aged 5-6. If a student wants to learn how to play while singing, I am happy to help him/her do so!

My studio location in Manhattan is conveniently near Midtown, Chelsea, Flat Iron, Murray Hill, Union Square, Tribeca, and the Financial District in particular and is easily accessible via public transportation. It houses an upright piano and seating for parents.

Nikole, is very warm and professional. I have never continued with voice lessons, I enjoyed the experience so much that I'm going to kick the bad habit of smoking and sit down and seriously figure my finances out to continue being taught by her. A lifelong musician and songwriter, Ian S. has extensive experience teaching guitar and piano to students age 3 and up both as a private music instructor and as a staff music instructor at the Institute of Music for Children. With 28 years of experience on the guitar and 32 years on piano, Ian has studied and performed with several award-winning music artists, and has written, recorded, and produced over one hundred songs. About Yuichi
Yuichi H. was born in Tokyo, Japan. His musical career started at age 10 when he performed marimba in a music recital. He started playing drum set at age 14 and joined a wind ensemble, a few rock bands, and a jazz big band. With some of these groups, he performed at several live music venues in Tokyo. In 1991, he composed the music and performed drums and percussion in a production of Othello, at The Globe Tokyo Panasonic Theater.
In the fall of 1991, with a full scholarship, he attended Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA. He studied jazz drums mainly with Joe Hunt and Jon Hazilla, and orchestral percussion with Dean Anderson. Also, he took many classes in jazz composition and arranging with Gregg Hopkins and Jeff Friedman. He was the recipient of "The Cuccinello Percussion Award" and the "Berklee Percussion Department Achievemen
t Award." Outside of the school curriculum, he joined several bands and performed at several venues such as the Willow Jazz Club, Middle East Cafe, and Copley Square Hotel. With one of these bands, he appeared at a jazz festival called "Jazz Improv." in Kingston, NY in 1993.

In the spring of 1995 he earned a Professional Diploma in Performance and Jazz Composition from Berklee College.
His ambition to learn and play music made him move to New York City. He continued his studies at The City College of New York, CUNY, NY, and earned a Masters degree in jazz performance in the spring of 2000. There, he studied jazz and contemporary drums with Charli Persip, Kim Plainfield, and Mark Walker. Also, he studied jazz ensemble, and arranging with Grammy award winning bassist Ron Carter.
Currently, as a full-time freelance drummer, he appears at various live music venues in New York City, and around the tri-state area as well. His own jazz band has performed at Arthur's Tavern in Greenwich Village every Tuesday since September 2001, and he has also appeared at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York in 2003, 2004 and 2005. He has also been touring in Tokyo and Kyushu, Japan.

As a sideman, he has performed at the Birdland Jazz Club in New York with the Morris Brothers Band in 2000, and also at the April Jazz Festival in Finland with the Jay Sweeney R&B Experience in 1999. With his wide-ranged interest in music, he plays not only jazz, but also rock, R&B, funk, blues, country, Brazilian and afro-Cuban.
John Scofield, Larry Carlton, John Abercrombie, Robben Ford, John Petrucci (Dream Theatre), Percy Heath (MJQ), Ron Carter, Donald Byrd, and Barry Harris are among some of the more notable musicians that Yuichi has performed with.

Yuichi is an excellent and experienced educator. He taught drums at the National Guitar Workshop since 1997 and also at the Roosevelt Island School in 2004. His students range from 9 years old to experienced adults. He has clear objectives and a passion for all lessons, units, projects, and is able to share these objectives with his students very clearly. Also, with his skill to plan instruction programs for music that meets individual needs, interests, and abilities of students, he worked for the Jazz Workshop in Yamaguchi, Japan in 2002, 2003, and 2006. There he played a very important role as a program coordinator as well as a translator. At this workshop, he worked with jazz legends, Barry Harris, Richard Davis, and Lewis Nash.

*** Lesson Details ***
After so many years since I grabbed a pair of drum sticks for the first time, I still get the same joy and excitement when I play music with drums nowadays. The better I have an idea about music, the more fun I get. It seems that my drumming gets better as long as I have specific goals every time I practice playing drums, and that keeps me wanting to play more.

By teaching how to play drums, I like to share this fun with you. In order to do that, I will make an ideal practice plan specifically designed for you.
If you know what songs you like to play, then I will show you what to practice on drums and how you are doing. It might be helpful if you understand the song in terms of what it consists in term of verses and choruses, chord changes, instrumentation, etc. Whenever you like, I can talk about these things as well. You could take it as a kind of music theory, but I keep in my mind that your primary interest is getting better on drums.

If you do not have particular songs in your mind right now but you want to play drums, No problem. I will be happy to introduce you many different kinds of songs/tunes until you find one to play.
Or if you just want to play some hot drum solos, I sure got some great stuff to work on to it.
Either playing a song or playing just solo drums, I will show you many different techniques to work on, and I will keep watching how you are doing on drumming.

Great Teacher

Yuichi has been a really great teacher for our 7 years old son. He is very patient and really great with kids. He's made a real effort to get our son interested in drumming and music more generally, introducing to different sounds, rhythms and types of music. My son really enjoys his lesson and is making good progress!

Our son is 7 years old and started drum lessons with Yuichi several months ago. My son absolutely loves his classes with Yuichi and would go more than once a week if he could. We are very happy with Yuichi. He makes the lesson fun and interesting for our son, and at the same time teaching him what he needs to know so he continues to make progress. My experience
I have consistently taught priva
te lessons to bass players, pianists, and other instrumentalists since 2010. I have also had the opportunity to teach over a dozen jazz clinics, including two separate visits to the annual Panama Jazz Festival to teach and perform. At Berklee I studied music pedagogy and continue to research pedagogy on my own time. Recently through a teacher training program I have participated in workshops learning the basics of Suzuki, Kodály, and Orff Shulwerk methods. I currently teach music classes part time at a Manhattan private school and part time in an El Sistema based after school strings program.

My students have gone on to win statewide competitions such as positions in the All State jazz band and orchestra. Some have participated in music festivals around the country such as the Newport Jazz Festival and others have continued on to study at the collegiate level at schools including McGill University and Northwestern University.

Isaac is an excellent teacher and is highly recommended. His method is not centered on drills, music reading or repetition, but rather on getting an understanding of how the notes, chords work together. In so doing, the student gets a great understanding of theory and it opens the door to improvisation. In addition he's very patient with folks such as myself who don't come to class with a deep understanding of music theory.

I have found that many people have been confused before my music theory books and lessons. I have had great luck using my approaches in making learning music theory fun and accessible. I also find that it is very helpful to not bite off everything at once. We learn the music theory that we can use and apply it taking it out of the just theoretical to actually have fun playing with it.

I have a Masters in Education as well as having spent many years performing, teaching in one on one and group settings both privately and at music camps and festivals. I play and teach bluegrass, old time, Irish, and swing jazz styles. I like my students to really enjoy playing music and their lessons as well as learning to become fluent in the language of music. It is not required that folks learn to read music necessarily, but it can be a part of the lessons if desired. I love to see my students able to continue learning and playing on their own, be able to hold their own at jams and on the stage is they so desire, or just enjoy making music for themselves. I have techniques that have proven effective to help get past jam phobia, that help folks learn to improvise who have not had any luck with doing so before, and help getting away fro
m sheet music addictions to be able to have fun and confidence out at jams. I also can give a good foundation in music theory as it applies to one's actual playing and have it be fun and make sense.

Ms.Krisztina is a joy to work with. My girls started with her at 5 & 6 and she worked so well with them. She has kept their interest since and has introduced new concepts in a way that isn’t overwhelming, but enjoyable and fun. She has a lot of patience with them and has a skill for drawing their attention to the violin & music.

I would highly recommend Krisztina. She truly likes teaching violin. She goes beyond the call of duty. For example, she sends emails with her or other musician videos for practice at home, works over the allotted time if needed and if she is able to, sends texts and responds promptly.
My daughter was beginning to say she was getting less interested in violin and before I could say anything, Krisztina made my daughter excited about it again with new things to learn.
There is nothing negative to say. She is an excellent teacher.

My goal as a teacher is to give you the facility to express yourself through music. The key parts to developing this facility are:

1. theory -- if you know your theory, you know the best way to express your idea without having to think about it
2. technique -- the last thing you want is for your technique to hinder your ability to express your idea. Having good technique lets your ideas flow naturally

When you take lessons with me, you get out of it what you put in. Your job as student is to be honest with what you expect to achieve and my job as teacher is to give you the tools to achieve it

I am a bass player first, not a guitarist who also teaches bass. Students will learn technique, theory and groove from a teacher who understands that as bass players, we are in a unique position. Since bass is both a harmony and rhythm instrument we have the opportunity to develop into leaders in a way other instrumentalists don't. I will encourage students interested in exploring this aspect of their instrument

I have a degree in jazz performance from The Ohio State University and have played in numerous rock, jazz and off-broadway bands over the last 20 years. Now playing is something I do primarily for fun and my #1 goal is always that my students have as much fun playing as I do

David is a fantastic bassist. Every time I play with David, I am amazed how he plays solid groove and touching lines. He has good ear too, so it’s truly enjoyable to interplay with him.

David is fantastic. He is very smart and his formal education in music shines through in his teachings. He teaches the proper foundational techniques which may be harder to adopt initially but without it, advancement to high level playing is much more difficult and time consuming. David's direct teaching style creates very efficient sessions and maximum progression. David has the right balance of formal music education to ensure proper technique, and his personal band side project to ensure that you are enjoying the process since that's what's most important.

The study of Music Theory not only helps you appreciate music as a listener but also to get more into the spirit of the composition as a player and allows you to write music as a composer. Use as many spices in the musical toolkit as you can! Music Theory is exciting once you learn what you can do with it. Make old boring melodies sound fresh and new. Change the styling of a song. Make something complicated sound simple. Take something ordinary and present it as avant garde. Having command of Music Theory is like being the chef of a fully stocked kitchen!

About Paul
I've been a proud and active member of the International Society of Bassists (ISB) since 1999. I've won several awards (one recording I played on won a Grammy in 2010) and have toured in over 35 countries as both a bandleader and sideman. But my first teaching job in NYC in 2002 was as a high school band director at Hunter College High School. I'm familiar with the needs of students at several levels of ability and aspirations. Some students are purchasing an instrument for the first time, some are trying to get into the performing ensemble or college of their choice. Everyone wants to be more familiar with the bass and experience the joy of making music while you are playing whether you are a beginner or a pro. That's why we love it! Of course to do that we have to discipline ourselves to get some skills under our belt.

ears I've studied with some great teachers myself including: John Clayton, Rufus Reid, Buster Williams, Alfonso Johnson, and many others. I pass that information along to you. Information not only about technique but the philosophy behind the music that you are making. Connecting mind and body along with humility and a great attitude goes a long way both as a student and performer. I find it's important to cover the physical as well as mental aspects of practicing and playing as practicing is an animal of it's own. Practicing obstacles may include: resistance to being consistent, only working on what you're good at and avoiding the trouble areas, or having trouble concentrating and being present on what you're working on in the moment. I've been through it. As an on-going learner of music I've learned to manage and direct these elements so I can still reach the outcomes I want.

Along with performing and teaching I'm a bandleader for Jazz At Lincoln Center where we do jazz outreach concerts at middle schools and high schools in NYC. I'm also on faculty as an Instructor at the Teacher's College (Columbia University) where my students range from beginner to PhD level. I've worked as a cultural ambassador for the US State Dept and traveled extensively performing and teaching to audiences of all ages and backgrounds in addition to touring with world-renown artists throughout Europe and the Americas. I have three recordings as a bandleader and played on over 50 recordings as a sideman. I have a BM in Music Composition from Berklee College of Music as well as a MA from Queens College in Jazz Performance.
