About L'Marco
I am not just a teacher, having the experience of successfully launching a solo career in the pop markets and working with some of the best in the industry! Thus, not only do I give instruction on basic and intermediate singing technique(s), I also focuses heavily on the performance aspect of music.

"There is nothing greater to witness on stage, than a singer who both has the talent and the ability to captivate their audience's full attention." - L. S.

I studied for 5 years at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at CSU, Long Beach. I studied everything from Classical to Jazz, so I'm knowledgeable on how to yield results in various genres. My musical education, however, dates far before my collegiate career, offering assurance to my students that they will, indeed, get the most from their lessons: the Ability, the Finesse (sharpenin
g of their natural talent), and the Confidence (which is one of the most vital elements of performance).

*** Lesson Details ***
I have a very unique teaching style most would say. I'm very real, honest, upfront, and approachable. My feedback is constructive and insightful. I focus on technical singing, initially, to really establish a solid foundation for musicality and health longevity, then as progression is made, I put emphasis on performance methods. Throughout my lessons, confidence building is my main focus! Most of my students can attest that if the work is put in, the best results are put out! I teach many genres: Classical, Pop/R&B, Rock, Country, and Musical Theatre!

L'Marco is providing my 8 year old son more than what I thought. He's teaching the things that go along with singing and the words and definition as well as having exams so he will really know what they mean. Diction, posture, diaghragm, larynax, glissando (?). He's teaching him pitch, performance and stage presence. Because of L'Marco and his wonderful teachings my son has song the lead to a song in church which he was very afraid before. Now he has many request to lead solos and perform at 2 separate banquets this year (2014). Several of my friends want to utilize L;Marco for their children... NO NO he's all mine. lol

L'Marco shares his soul/power through teaching!

I've been studying under L'Marco Smith for almost a year and can say not only has my singing ability improved but my confidence in myself and my voice as well. Not only does he focus on technique but is passionate about instilling the idea that music is all about the intention and message you want to leave your audience. I tend to put stress and pressure on myself being such a serious artist constantly looking for perfection but L'Marco has been there time after time reminding me with his enthusiasm, humor and supportive outlook to enjoy the journey. He has taught me to make bold mistakes, know you have been given a gift to share, and take responsibility don't be ashamed of your voice. I've never met such a teacher who would kill to see you succeed the way he does. I know working with him, I am becoming the confident/power/successful/artist I've always dreamed I could be.

I find great joy in sharing my on-stage experience and my insight on performance techniques with the next generation of creative musicians.

About Paul
As a teacher (and also father) Paul finds great joy in sharing his experience and insight with the next generation of creative musicians. For many years, he has taught drummers and percussionists of all ages and levels in academic settings as well as privately. He has also taught workshops and masterclasses at several renowned venues and music conservatories while touring with bands throughout Europe (Royal Academy of Music, London UK; Hull University, Hull UK; Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood, Paris FR).
Playing music has always been a part of Paul's life. Growing up in a family of musicians, he started playing cello at age 6 and he's been playing drums since age 8. After an extensive classical tutelage at the Music Conservatory in Esch/Alzette (Luxembourg) and at various music workshops throughout the world, he completed both underg
raduate and graduate studies at Manhattan School of Music, learning from the likes of John Riley, David Liebman, Samir Chatterjee & Michael Abene.
Paul has since been able to make a name for himself among the local and international music industry as an accomplished drummer and forward-thinking composer. He has performed at several international festivals (North Sea Jazz Festival) and at some of the world's most prestigious jazz clubs in the US and overseas. Paul has appeared alongside such emerging stars as David Binney, Linda Oh, Ambrose Akinmusire, Will Vinson, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Lage Lund, Mike Moreno and Tim Collins.

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether my students are young or old, taking lessons as a hobby or wish to pursue a career in music, I tailor my lessons to meet each individual student’s needs and expectations.
I have a lot of fun teaching and I want you or your child to have fun during our lessons.
My students learn music in the most natural and intuitive way possible. I try to build on what the student already likes, listens to and has a passion for. I encourage students to bring their favorite songs and we usually end up working with those. I also like using songs by The Beatles as they provide a perfect (fun and familiar) platform to learn many different aspects of drumming and musical performance.
In addition to being a drummer and percussionist, I have a strong background in music theory and I want to make sure my students not only know how to play their instrument, but also become familiar with reading and writing music.
After a few months in the studio, you or your child can expect to have a better understanding of music and have acquired the basic tools and techniques which will allow you to play your favorite pieces of music.

Paul is great teacher. My 7 year old son and I have been taking lessons with Paul for several months and I'm very please with the progress that we have both made. Paul has done a great job at tailoring my son's and my lessons to reflect the difference in age, skill, and musical interests. He has taught us fundamentals and technique but has also incorporated songs into the lessons, which is helping us build skill, while making it more fun. I would recommend him both for kids and adults. He has a great personality and is very patient, responsible, and puntual.

I have little musical training and absolutely no experience playing the drums but thought it would be a fun thing to do in my free time. I'm 31 and did not have high expectations that I would be able to handle even basic 3-limbed coordination. After sitting down with Paul once, it was a happy revelation to find out that I was actually capable of learning. He is patient & observant. For a beginner like me, he does a good job of structuring incremental exercises, while simultaneously finding songs at my level, so I could learn to play a song from beginning to end after only a few lessons. He's good at keeping me on track and encouraging me to practice. I feel lucky that my first experience learning the drums has been with such a great teacher!

He has taught me so much in very little time and made it extremely dynamic and fun. I look forward to my lessons each week because I always feel accomplished at the end. I highly recommend him as a teacher!

About Carolyn
Coming from a large extended family in Hawaii, I was surrounded by luau music, kachi-kachi dancing, Japanese bon dances, handsome local guys singing and playing their guitars and my aunties strumming their ukes and singing old songs. I reveled in walking alone in Nature or playing piano and singing in empty, stain-glassed churches – just wailing in the dark and colored light!

I studied: classical piano, organ, oboe, clarinet, violin, voice, and guitar. I sang in jazz trios and pop bands, earned income as a church organist/choir accompanist, and spent 15 years teaching private piano lessons to students of all ages.
I studied drawing and painting, I drew trees, animals, the ocean, sky and mountains, still life, and the people around me.

Upon arriving in New York City, I entered into a journey of playing at a Washington Heights gos
pel church, living in a building filled with musicians, accompanying vocal master classes, studying Sanskrit, Indian raga, world percussion, creative arts therapy and performance wellness.

I now compose and sing my songs - interweaving voice with keyboard or guitar. Besides teaching privately, I can be found performing my songs in clubs, outdoor festivals, coffee houses, and poetry/healing events. I currently attended a certificate program in sound & music healing and the focus of my music rests here. I incorporate many techniques to aid students in relaxation, breath awareness, and de-stressing.

Using traditional teaching methods, I create meaningful experiences for students by:
- being patient, flexible and creative in approach
- using visual, aural, and tactile teaching tools

One day, I decided to learn ukulele by myself but I became quickly stuck. I found Carolyn on this website and then went to her place to take my first lesson. Carolyn is super sweet; very welcoming, smiling, fun to work with. She is very positive and gives great feedbacks all the time! I learnt a lot during our session!! At some point, we sat at her piano to talk about notes and keys: it was very interesting to switch to another instrument. In addition, her place has very harmonious vibes: when I left I felt so much better!!! I definitely recommend Carolyn for music lessons! And I look forward to our next ukulele lesson!

Though my time as a student with Dr. Dan was short, it was very valuable. Even though the lessons were about singing, it helped me gain a general confidence in myself regarding posture, and using a loud voice. He has given a number of exercises to develop my breathing, vibrato, tone, and lower registers to use on my own. Dr. Dan is a great teacher who makes the atomsphere of the lessons very friendly and I would highly recommend him!

Testimonials:
From Coda Magazine August 2012: by Seton Hawkins

Through outstanding collaborations like the Brazilian Acoustic Ensemble, guitarist and composer Billy N has emerged as a leading exponent of the music of Brazil. Exploring far beyond the well-trodden bossa nova path. Billy unearths the full range of styles the country offers, including choro, baiào, valsa and samba, and gives American audiences a rich panoramic glimpse into Brazilian art, highlighting its parallels with progressive jazz.

A recipient of composers residencies at Yaddo and MacDowell Colony, he is the curator of a three-day series at the club dedicated to the country's music. Billy will showcase his own group—a sextet with drummer Matt Kane, bassist Leco Reis, saxophonists Michael Attias and Eric Schugren and trumpeter Ben Holmes—in a concert primarily featuring his original works. SH

Reviews of my Book on Alfred Brazil: Guitar Atlas,  I love this series and this is the best of the six titles I have. Billy really knows his stuff; the analysis of time at the beginning is superb: something I now use in my teaching. This is definitely for intermediate and higher guitarists, but the pieces are worth the effort to get right, and the accompanying CD shows you what you are aiming for. This is as good as my other Brazilian guitar book (by Nelson Faria) and much more compact and easier to follow. Highly recommended!

#2

This book is essential homework for students of Brazilian guitar. It is one of the best resources out there, along with Nelson Faria's "The Brazilian Guitar Book." The original etudes are not only instructional, but are nice pieces in their own right. An excellent value.

I've taught all levels over 20 years both in NYC and Brazil. I work with the material that the student wants and also through recordings and charts introduce much music that the student might have been unfamiliar with. My lessons are catered to the individual. There is no obstacle anyone has that is too great to work through. My approach to rhythmic training has helped many. I have simple way of breaking down the guitar fingerboard which can used as a guide to learn harmony. I'll get you into the horizontal aspects of guitar, traveling across the neck, making music across one string as well, mastering the guitar in a small fret range - " vertical position playing".

I have guitar for the student, either electric or nylon. Cavaquinho students bring their instrument. First time students must bring their instrument so I can see what they are playing on.

I have been taking lessons with Billy since January 2015. I am a total beginner and I really think I have made the best choice ever to pick him as my teacher. Billy is an experienced guitar teacher and a professional player that knows great techniques for beginners. He has been teaching me basics of guitar in a smart way, and at each lesson I feel I learn something new and at the same time I can clearly see how much progress I have made since our first lesson. He has also been teaching me how to read music and tabs which proofed to be extremely useful every time I want to learn a new song by myself. Highly recommended!

I cannot recommend Billy enough. I studied jazz improvisation with Billy for three years, and later returned to study Brazilian guitar and Piedmont-style finger picking with him. I had been playing for more than twenty years when I started studying with him and he not only helped me improve my playing technically and creatively (on electric and nylon stringed guitars) but also expanded my knowledge of theory and helped me develop new approaches to composing and arranging. I am still working with the material he gave me and take lessons from him whenever my schedule allows.

I took Brazilian guitar lessons from Billy for several years. His method focuses on absorbing the many rhythms of Brazil and translating them from percussion instruments to the guitar. Much of his effort is devoted on achieving the elusive Brazilian swing, which non Brazilians need to learn. Billy is excellent in breaking down the rhythms and explaining them. He even has a book out on his method. He covers various Brazilian genres: choro, bossa nova, samba, baiao and more.
Billy also is an accomplished jazz, classical and flamenco guitarist with a thorough understanding of harmony and improvisation. He is very patient and has years of teaching and performance experience. You will be lucky to study with him!

About Grady
