I teach children and adults of all ages!
Suzuki Training: ECC, Book 1, Book 2

About Ashlyn
Hi! I have been teaching private violin lessons for the past 8 years to beginners and adults! I am currently a freelancer in New York City, as well as working for an artist management company.

I began teaching privately after working with the Boston Youth Symphony’s Intensive Community Program. This program provides free instruction to underrepresented communities and work with the program was required of my pedagogy course at Boston University. This was my first experience teaching and I loved it! I continued to work with the program after my class ended, helping students who needed some extra time with their instruments or training in music reading and theory. I have been teaching private lessons ever since, maintaining small studios while at was at school in Chicago and Boston.

To enhance my teaching, I took the Every Child Can,
Book 1 and Book 2 courses offered through the Suzuki Association of America. These classes provided valuable new ideas and approaches to teaching that I use every day. At Belvoir Terrace I was a violin and viola teacher as well as a full time counselor, living with the students and being totally integrated into their camp lives. Additionally, I was the chairperson of the Instrumental Department, learning how to more carefully organize tasks, foster innovation, and build relationships between departments.

I am passionate about all areas of music education. This summer, I accepted an internship in the production department of Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute. I had the most wonderful summer of my life, enjoying every moment of being backstage, driving artists to and from Ravinia, and working with talented young artists about to step into their careers. That summer helped me develop my skills in education and production, and my passion for changing children’s lives through music education has only grown. I have continued to see how the arts unite communities and how arts education and outreach change lives.

***Education***
I received my Master's Degree in Violin Performance from DePaul Univeristy in 2014 and a Certificate in Performance in 2016. I graduated magna cum laude from Boston University with a Bachelor's Degree in Violin Performance. If you are looking for a young, exciting teacher, I might be the perfect fit!

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students of all ages and experience levels. Depending on the student, I use a Suzuki based method of teaching. This means that I use the Suzuki books and like to have the parent be more involved in the learning process, but I also feel it is very important to supplement the books by adding scales, etudes, and other solo repertoire. When possible, I like to have my students interact in chamber music, which is so often missing from most lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect students to have a music stand. I bring music and a tuner and metronome.

*** Specialties ***
I typically teach classical style violin and viola, however I do have experience teaching fiddle.

I have been taking lessons with Ashlyn for about 7 months now and she has truly been the best violin teacher I could have hoped for! She is not only good at teaching and helping me improve my playing, but she is also a really nice person and we get along very well. I look forward to every lesson and always learn a lot and have fun. Unfortunately, I leave for college soon so I will no longer be able to take lessons with Ashlyn, I will miss her a lot.

For my beginning violin students, I have found the Essential Elements Series to be highly effective, as well as the Suzuki methodology. All lessons will typically start with scales/arpeggios and be followed with the selected piece(s) we have chosen together. All of my students will attest that I set clear and high expectations for every lesson, yet am very understanding, friendly and approachable right from the start. My goal is to provide every individual with the tools necessary for becoming a well-rounded musician, so that they too can share their love for music with others.

About Michael
Beginning his cello instruction at the age of 8, Michael spent the majority of his early years under the guidance of Nancy Hambleton-Torrente, current director of music for the Yorktown public school districts in Westchester county. During his undergraduate years, he attended Colgate University where he received a B.A. in both Music and Psychology. While at Colgate, Michael had the privilege of studying with cellist Florent Renard-Payen, founder and director of the esteemed Tarob Cello Ensemble. Upon graduation, Michael continued his studies at Montclair State University where he received an Artist Diploma in performance. Under the guidance of Nicholas Tzavaras of the Shanghai String Quartet, Michael performed two solo recitals for the John J. Cali School of Music before further pursuing his studies in the studio of Marc T. Johnson of the
Vermeer Quartet. From 2012 to 2014, Michael served as principal cellist of the Symphony Orchestra at Hunter College while concurrently earning a Masters degree in Music Education. He graduated with summa cum laude honors in 2014 and began his teaching career with the New York City Department of Education later that year.

At present, Michael is director of Orchestral activities at P.S. 205 Clarion in Brooklyn N.Y. and principal cellist of the Riverside Orchestra on the upper west side of Manhattan. He runs a full private teaching studio and actively gigs in and around the greater New York City area. He has also played in numerous master classes for world renowned cellists such as Lynn Harrell and Andres Diaz, and has had the privilege of working with esteemed conductors such as Marietta Cheng of the Southern Finger Lakes Orchestra, Paul Hostetter, Chair of Orchestral Activities for the Schwob School of Music, and Rueben Blundell, current Conductor and Music Director of the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra, the Hunter Symphony and the Riverside Orchestra.

While Michael does enjoy a busy academic and teaching schedule, he believes that part of the joy of being a working musician is having the ability to share his love of music with others, something he feels both honored and privileged to be able to do.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching philosophy is one that tailors to the specific needs, interests and abilities of each individual. Throughout my years of private instruction, I have learned that no two individuals learn and/or think the same way. Thus, for some students I have found the Suzuki method to be highly effective, while for others I have been more comprehensive with my instruction, incorporated scales, etudes, sonatas, concerti and Bach suites for a more well rounded approach. Regardless of the methodology employed, all of my students will attest that I set clear and high expectations for every lesson, yet am very understanding, friendly and approachable right from the start. My goal is to provide every individual with the tools necessary for becoming a well-rounded musician, so that they too can share their love for music with others.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Two music stands and chairs.

*** Specialties ***
While I do specialize in classical instruction, I am able to instruct students in a variety of genres, including Jazz, Pop, and alternative rock. In addition, I tend to tailor my lessons to the needs of my students. If they are more comfortable learning by rote, then this is how I tend to instruct. My lessons are loosely structured by beginning with scales, moving on to etudes, then finishing with Bach suites, a sonata and/or a concerto.

I have been taking lessons with Michael for over a year now. I've taken lessons before with other instructors (though not in cello). Michael is one of the best instructors that I have ever had. He instructs and challenges you to get better, while at the same time being patient with your development. It has been a pleasure being a student of Michael.

I have studied with members of the Juilliard Quartet, and hold degrees from Juilliard and Harvard. As a teacher, I aim to give my students the tools to analyze and improve their own playing. I currently teach in the Preparatory Division at the Juilliard School and at the Interlochen Arts Camp.

As a professional violinist, my performance experiences range from solo (Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, Sendai Philharmonic, and AXIOM Ensemble, among others) to orchestral (Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, New World Symphony, Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, and more) to even popular music (Stars of the Lid tour and Cheryl B. Engelhardt's CD One Up)! I am constantly evaluating my own musicality and the physical mechanics of how I play, and I apply this to my teaching of students of all levels.

About Alex
Praised by The New York Times as “spellbinding,” violinist Alex is emerging as a strong advocate for the music of today. He has performed in venues including Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York City, Paine Hall at Harvard University, and the Hitachi Systems Hall in Sendai, Japan. At home with music new and old, he has appeared as a soloist with the Sendai Philharmonic, AXIOM Ensemble, and Juilliard Orchestra.

A member of the Momenta Quartet since 2016, Alex also performs with Le Train Bleu, American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), and Argento Ensemble. He recently took part in the Arvo Pärt at Eighty concert at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a performance which was streamed live globally. He appears regularly at the Chelsea Music Festival, and has also performed in the music festivals Bravo! Vail and the Tanglewood Musi
c Center. Alongside his wife and pianist Nana Shi, he made his Carnegie Hall debut with Mendelssohn’s Double Concerto for Violin, Piano, and Orchestra. The couple have presented recitals across the country, performing repertoire from Beethoven to Schnittke. Alex has led as concertmaster the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, Juilliard Chamber Orchestra, New Juilliard Ensemble, Harvard Bach Society Orchestra, and more. In the summer of 2011, he joined the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra on their tour to Japan.

Alex's diverse interests in music have led him to an international tour with the ambient drone-music duo Stars of the Lid, playing shows in Montreal, New York, and Los Angeles. An avid collaborator, he has performed with the Mark Morris Dance Group, Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, and with dancers from the New York City Ballet. Complementing his performing experience, Alex is part of the faculty of Juilliard's Music Advancement Program, as well as a teaching artist with Chamber Music by the Bay, an educational outreach and concert series that engages with audience through chamber music.

Alex recently received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Juilliard School, where he studied with Ronald Copes and Joseph Lin of the Juilliard String Quartet. His scholarly research was focused on Western music in Japan, specifically that of contemporary composer Somei Satoh. He also took lessons on Baroque violin with Robert Mealy of the Juilliard Historical Performance program. Alex holds a Master of Music degree from Juilliard, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College, where he studied with Lynn Chang.

Introduction to Reading Violin Tabs
Tablature is a form of musical notation that was invented to make reading music easier for fretted and string instruments like guitar, bass, and violin. The premise is operationally-based, meaning that rather than showing rhythm, duration, and pitch, violin tabs will show the player where and when to place their fingers on the instrument. For an improvising musician, violin tabs allow you to improvise while staying within the chord structure of a song. Tablature-style notation is most commonly
