If there is one thing music education lacks these days, it is music theory. Too often young violinists are made into automatons with the misuse of the Suzuki method. I always ensure my students understand what they are reading on the page of sheet music, with all questions answered. My goal is to teach a man how to fish. I.e. Show the student how to read sheet music so that they can pick up any sheet of music and just play it (known as sight reading).
Beginners typically take 60 minute classes once per week at a recurring time. Young children typically take half hour classes and older children, adult musicians and those on a budget typically take 45 minute classes. The most common lesson length to start with is 60 minutes, as the teacher will need to tune your instrument and help you get set up. Some students choose to take lessons twice per week when a concert is coming up, to catch up from a vacation or if they just want to make faster progress.

Finding a trained violinist and finding a good violin teacher are two very different things. When I see other teacher's profiles, they boast of the years of training they had. Anyone can learn to play (that is my philosophy), but it takes a love of teaching to really make a difference in someone's life.
PATIENCE With a love of teaching comes a seemingly endless resource of patience. This is because what the student sees as "patient" is really just a small step in the educational process. It is a fraction of time just before a correction. When you have something new to teach, whether it is a new technique, or a correction of something being done improperly, and you know exactly how to break
it down so it is understandable and accomplish-able, you know it is always a short matter of time before the student gets it. And by short, I mean a matter of seconds, or minutes.

When you are learning, there is a vast sea of information. Not all of that knowledge is equal in importance. It is most important to distinguish what is important and what is not very important. All of my real-life experience, and continuing experience reveals itself in the form of ensuring my students know what is truly important.

HOW FAST CAN I EXPECT RESULTS? Some students who were musicians previously leave the first lesson being able to play their first song. Most students however, who have never played an instrument before, can expect to be comfortable bowing (a huge part of the process - half the sound!) within the first few weeks, and will then move on to learning songs. We will be learning sheet music as well, on a very, very easy gradient. After the first couple months, I expect you to tell me a song you might like to learn most so that we can start working on it.

I took violin lessons for a year with an instructor I found through a different organization (not TakeLessons)--and I learned more in one hour with Antoinette than I learned in 30 lessons with that other teacher. In just one lesson, I can see that Antoinette is friendly, smart, encouraging, knows her stuff--and knows how to teach (which not every good player can do). I'm an adult, but I bet she'd be just as great with a student of any age.

For the past twenty years, Dimitry has been teaching students of all ages to play the clarinet, saxophone, flute, trumpet, and recorder.
Students will learn proper techniques, posture, breathing, phrasing, articulation, tone, rhythm, sight reading, solfeggio, music theory, and music history. They will also learn to play solos (with and without accompaniment), as well as duets (along with the instructor).
Private lessons are customized to meet each student's goals, such as preparation for regional and state band auditions, concerts, and other music competitions.

Business Owner Dimitry Chernavsky is the Principal Clarinetist of the Livingston Symphony Orchestra, the Co-Principal of the Hanover Wind Symphony, and a member of the 'A La Mode' clarinet quartet.
Dimitry is a graduate of Kiev Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where he received a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Music Performance and Education.
Our 12-year old son has been learning clarinet from Mr. Dimitry for about a year now and we highly recommend him to prospective students for his deep music knowledge, rich clarinet performance experience and above all, just being a great clarinet teacher.
In a year's time with Mr. Dimitry, our son's progress has been very impressive. After our son started lessons with Mr. Dimitry, it quickly became apparent that Mr. Dimitry is a very experienced teacher for young musicians. He engages our son effectively to keep him interested in music and clarinet while at the same time sets high expectations for him. Our son always looks forward to clarinet lessons and also is motivated to practice pieces at home.
Mr. Dimitry not only teaches sound clarinet skills, but also emphasizes the importance of playing music the right way, that is to tell stories and express feelings through music rather than to play music like a technician. Although it is difficult for a young musician to fully appreciate this concept, it does go a long way in preparing him to become a really good musician in the long run.

My 7 year old son has been taking recorder lessons from Dimitry for almost 1 year now. Dimitry is very patient, encouraging, and enganging - considering that my son is on the younger side. Dimitry provides music instruction that is appropriate age and level wise, so my son feels accomplished and challenged at the same time.
We plan to continue with Dimitry and hopefully advance to the clarinet once his fingers can cover the clarinet holes and he has learned more music theory. My son looks forward to his music lessons. We are very pleased with his musical instruction.

Incredibly amiable, professional, and talented as a teacher.
As a senior in high school now graduating and transferring into college, I started my lessons with Dimitry in December last year and had to end this summer at the end of the music school's program. Even though my time learning the saxophone was short, Dimitry used my past musical experience to help guide me through the instrument. His lessons did not feel long in any sense of the word, and in fact some two-hour lessons I took to make up missed weeks blew by, as I was constantly engaged by his teachings. During my studies with him I found myself in the presence of a true musician, and this was only further driven home when I saw him play in the Hanover Wind Symphony at the Morristown Community Theater with Stanley Drucker. I would highly recommend Dimitry as an instructor for a student at any level.
20 years I've been including music theory in my lessons and many times giving private lessons just on the subject to Singers, Percussionists and instrumentalists outside of guitar. I have some fantastic sight singing books but I start with your memory, the melodies that have touched you. We explore your personal contact with music to find that you actually know the intervals, the building blocks of music. My understanding of chord function and harmonic colour gets clearly categorized and explained for the student so she/he can use for her/his self to develop a better ear and the right tools to analyze how any song works.
Billy N. has played Jazz, Brazilian and Classical music in the NYC area for the last 20 years. He has actively taught both finger-style and pick guitar for the last 20 years. He was on staff at the American Institute of Guitar for 11 years. His book on Brazilian Guitar is published by Alfred Music and currently available. He now offers online lessons via Skype as well as in his private studio. Playing credits include many museums and clubs in the NY area including Museum of Modern Art Museum of the City of NY and an extended stay at the Guggenheim museum in the Summer of 2000. In 2007 he gave a successful jazz workshop and concert in the city of Florianopolis Brazil. Billy has been awarded 3 prestigious composer's residencies 2006 - Yaddo and 2007 - The MacDowell Colony. He was featured on the PBS news hour during his residence at MacDowell. In 2008 he was awarded another MacDowell residency and followed this with a 3 hour appearance presenting his compositions live on WKCR Jazz Radio and another live radio appearance with band in 2010. Billy regularly plays in many venues around NY in Jazz trio settings as well as with Brazilian vocalists and instrumentalists. Most Recently his groups have been performing at the famed Cornelia Street Cafe in New York City. He also specializes in solo guitar and can double on percussion (Pandeiro) and Cavaquinho. Reviews of my Book on Alfred Brazil: Guitar Atlas, I love this series and this is the best of the six titles I have. Billy really knows his stuff; the analysis of time at the beginning is superb: something I now use in my teaching. This is definitely for intermediate and higher guitarists, but the pieces are worth the effort to get right, and the accompanying CD shows you what you are aiming for. This is as good as my other Brazilian guitar book (by Nelson Faria) and much more compact and easier to follow. Highly recommended!
This book is essential homework for students of Brazilian guitar. It is one of the best resources out there, along with Nelson Faria's "The Brazilian Guitar Book." The original etudes are not only instructional, but are nice pieces in their own right. An excellent value.

I cannot recommend Billy enough. I studied jazz improvisation with Billy for three years, and later returned to study Brazilian guitar and Piedmont-style finger picking with him. I had been playing for more than twenty years when I started studying with him and he not only helped me improve my playing technically and creatively (on electric and nylon stringed guitars) but also expanded my knowledge of theory and helped me develop new approaches to composing and arranging. I am still working with the material he gave me and take lessons from him whenever my schedule allows.

I took Brazilian guitar lessons from Billy for several years. His method focuses on absorbing the many rhythms of Brazil and translating them from percussion instruments to the guitar. Much of his effort is devoted on achieving the elusive Brazilian swing, which non Brazilians need to learn. Billy is excellent in breaking down the rhythms and explaining them. He even has a book out on his method. He covers various Brazilian genres: choro, bossa nova, samba, baiao and more.
Billy also is an accomplished jazz, classical and flamenco guitarist with a thorough understanding of harmony and improvisation. He is very patient and has years of teaching and performance experience. You will be lucky to study with him!

Lyle has a singing voice that will stun and amaze you when he sings in front of you. That will immediately put you at ease and motivate you to sing better using his techniques. His classical training has proven to be a great foundation for teaching me effective ways to understand, use and improve my voice. Matthew is an excellent teacher with a ton of patience, as well. Coming into our first lesson, I had some beginner experience, but it had been a while since I actively played the piano. His lessons focus on assuring that the fundamentals are understood, then progressively building into more difficult pieces and even some theory.
