I accept violinists of all levels, and have completed Suzuki teacher training through book 8. I also bring in other methods such as Shirley Givens Adventures in Violinland for younger students, and incorporate books from Paul Rolland's teaching methodology.

About Kira
I graduated from Mannes College of Music with a BS in violin performance and a minor in psychology. While at Mannes, I was a student of Sally Thomas (Julliard School), and other primary teachers include Yi-Wen Jiang (Shanghai String Quartet), Claudia Schaer, Amy Barlowe and Oscar Ravina. I have performed at every major concert hall in New York City, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall, and Symphony Space. My performance schedule has led me to perform in concert with pop superstar Sarah Mclachlan and to solo performances with the Rockland Summer Institute orchestra.

My past chamber music coaches include Ann Setzer, Peter Prosser, Chin Kim, Gena Raps, and members of both the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and NY Philharmonic. I have also participated in masterclasses with Cho-Liang Lin, Pamela Frank, and Ida Kavafian.
I am also a alumna of the Meadowmount School of Music.

Currently, I am a registered teacher with the Suzuki Association of America and have completed Suzuki teacher training for books 1 - 8 at NYC's School for Strings, where I trained with Ekaterina Gerson and Allen Lieb. I have also completed additional violin and viola pedagogy studies with Ann Setzer of the Julliard School. My students have been accepted to performing arts high schools such as Laguardia Highschool School for the Performing Arts and now perform with ensembles such as Chicago University's Chamber Orchestra.

In addition, I completed both Music Mind Games Units 1 & 2 teacher training with Michiko Yurko in 2012. I incorporate this fun way of learning how to read and understand music theory into all of my lessons.

I have been teaching privately for over 10 years, and look forward to continuing to enrich other peoples' lives through music for years to come.

*** Lesson Details ***
I generally try to tailor my teaching approach based on a student's individual goals with a strong emphasis on proper violin technique. I have the most experience teaching using the Suzuki method, but also utilize more traditional approaches in order to address the developmental level of my pupil. I expect my students to come in with a positive attitude, willingness to learn, and strong work ethic.

With students 7 years of age and younger, I strongly recommend that a parent take lessons for 6 weeks prior to their child beginning instruction. I also insist that parents sit in on their child's lessons and take notes. This enables parents to properly supervise their child's practice, which ultimately leads to speedier progress and a better grasp of the material being taught.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Separate dedicated violin studio in apartment with piano.

I do own three cats (Spork, Pancakes, and Brienne), so please let me know if this is a problem!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I ask that my students please speak to me prior to purchasing or renting an instrument.

Following the first violin lesson, I expect my student to provide their instrument (I can provide a list of resources and rental companies for instruments), a notebook, any music books assigned, a music stand, and a metronome.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical playing and prefer teaching using the Suzuki method. I am currently registered with the Suzuki Association of America. I am also flexible enough to assist a student seeking to branch out, and for those not interested in Suzuki, I am also able to teach via more traditional methods. Additionally, I have an extensive educational background in music theory, I am also able to take those students interested in taking beginning to intermediate viola lessons.

About Ran
Hi there! I am Ran. I have been teaching individual violin lessons to children and adults of all musical levels since 2001. I am currently available to teach lessons at your home also at my studio. I have helped students to prepare and to pass the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music graded music exams and assessments level 1-8 including music theory, aural test, and the instrumental auditions from all three Baroque, Classical and 20th Century contemporary periods. I have also helped middle school and high school students to prepare and to enter the Regional Advanced Orchestral Programs in New Jersey. I hold both of my Bachelor of Music and Master of Music in Violin Performance from Manhattan School of Music in New York City. A trained Suzuki violin teacher, and a current member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas, I have
been serving as a part time Suzuki violin teacher in private and community music schools in New Jersey, as well as performing actively as an orchestral and chamber musician in NYC and NJ.

My goal of teaching is to improve the student's intellect, mental-physical collaboration, to develop the skills including aural ability, emotional connection to music, enjoy playing, and to develop strong self-discipline that the students can apply to other activities. I am passionate to keep this precious human art form alive, especially in these future generations!

I grew up in professional conservatories, and started playing the violin at age 4 instructed by my mother who is a full time professional violinist with the Shanghai Symphony. I was so lucky to have her as my first violin teacher that through her teaching, I understand how important it is to study with a patient, encouraging and dedicated teacher. Teaching is such a rewarding experience to me that I am able to use my skills and knowledge to help students developing their interest and potential talent as well as achieving their multiple learning purposes.

Ran was such a wonderful instructor and overall person. My son loved her and so did I. My 10 year old learned so much Ran, because she has so much knowledge and passion for the violin. I just recently moved out of the area, so I am not within driving distance anymore to Ran. However, I would highly recommend her to anyone wanting to learn the violin or sharpen an already existing skillset. I believe Ran has transferred her passion for the violin to my son and to myself as well. I wish I could give her 10 stars! She is awesome!!!!

I've been teaching violin privately and in groups for 7 years. My most recent teaching experience was volunteering in Haiti last summer, where I taught at three different summer camps. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to hold the instrument and as time goes on you'll be able to play simple to more advanced melodies. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Katie
Hi! My name is Katie and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching violin lessons since 2008 and have loved helping my students develop a passion for music and a stronger connection to the world around them. I graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2015 with a Masters of Music, and the University of Michigan in 2013 with a Bachelor of Music. I have experience teaching private and group lessons, from beginner to advanced. This September I am incredibly excited to be interning with Roberta Guasperi at the East Harlem School of Music! I'm a bubbly, patient, open-minded person, and my teaching style is flexible, creative but methodical. I look forward to helping you reach your goals! :)

Katie was a wonderful violin teacher for my son (four years old at the time). Katie knew how to make learning music and the violin fun through games and various activities. She was attentive and patient, kind and encouraging. She worked with us to allow him to participate in the annual recital--she played a simple, beautiful song while he plucked an open string. She is reliable, accessible, and caring. Couldn't ask for a better, more qualified, and dynamic teacher than Katie to facilitate a positive musical experience a young child.

I greatly enjoyed my violin lessons with Katie. She improved my violin technique, encouraged me to tackle challenging solo pieces, and helped me prepare for youth orchestra auditions. She also guided me in producing video recordings for my college applications. On top of that, she is extremely patient and cheerful. Katie is the best!

I don't have much to add after what you've already read. I love teaching and hope my enthusiasm will be contagious. You are free to record a video your lessons to help you practice more efficiently at home and to tell me whatever else you need to help you learn. Every teacher wants their students to practice as much as possible but I focus on how to help you learn quickly because many of you have very busy lives. Whatever time you have I'll help you make the most of it.

About Gregor
I perform regularly at Carnegie Hall with Orchestra of St. Luke's, have performed and recorded with David Bowie (Heathen), play lots of chamber music and contemporary music concerts and have toured extensively but always lived in NYC. While I studied with Jascha Heifetz protege Erick Friedman to get my BM and MM from Manhattan School of Music,, Charlie Castleman at The Quartet Program and Chris Lee, concertmaster of NJ Symphony, my teaching is based on what I learned as a performing musician in NYC. Working with great players here showed me what they all had in common versus what were just my teacher's idiosyncrasies. Using your body efficiently to avoid injury is at the core of what I teach. Playing well in your 20's is entirely different than having learned how to avoid injury and play well in your 50's. I teach anyone from beginners o
f all ages to young professionals preparing for auditions to older people who always wanted to do this and just need someone to spark their curiosity.

Gregor was terrific to work with! He has had so much experience and teaches in a very personal and dynamic manner. He can really address the root of many issues in playing and take personal differences in consideration. I was very happy he had so much experience using the Alexander Method and adapting it to violin playing. This is what you need to set yourself up for a lifetime of playing! While I studied primarily classical music, he also has lots of experience in many other genres as well.

I briefly studied with Gregor when I lived in the NYC Metro area. He is one of the best teachers I've had the privilege of studying with over the years. My lessons were tailored to my goals, and Gregor was committed to helping me learn as much as possible, while being incredibly down to earth. He is simply a world-class teacher, and someone I was very fortunate to meet. It was a pleasure and privilege taking lessons from him, and I cannot recommend him enough to aspiring violinists and violists.

We will start off our lessons with introductions to the violin. In addition to posture and being able to appropriately hold and play the violin, you will develop a thorough understanding of basic music theory. We will incorporate music theory (reading notes, note values, notation, etc.) to every lesson. You will typically use Suzuki books to learn and develop different violin techniques. We will also spend a lot of time working on etudes/scales to compliment those newly learned techniques.

About Erica
I was introduced to the violin at the early age of 5. I quickly found a deep passion for the violin and would play all day and night, much to my neighbors' dismay. I joined the NY Young Musicians' Ensemble, where I was given the opportunity to travel to Greece to play at numerous concert halls. I attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School as an instrumental major and took music theory/ history and ear training courses along with daily orchestra classes. At Hamilton College, I joined the orchestra and quartet ensemble, appropriately named, “Hamstrings”. I was asked to join the saxophone ensemble in 2015 and also took upon a Teacher Assistant position for a Jazz MOOC. In addition to my vast musical opportunities, I have also had many experiences working with children in education. After graduating from Hamilton College, I taught both 1 on
1 and group violin classes at Real Brave Music School in Queens, which allowed me to incorporate the Suzuki method into my own curriculum for beginner violinists.
In November of 2016, I moved to Chongqing, China to work at Musicool Music & Art, where I was a Music Instructor, an English- Chinese Translator, and the Education Program Coordinator. I had the wonderful opportunity to develop comprehensive and innovative curricula to match the needs of multiple age groups, lead classes in both English and Mandarin Chinese, and assist other teachers in accurately translating class content. I was also responsible for overseeing program/curriculum development for the rest of the company, ensuring that each class had engaging and interactive elements.
