What the lesson is like:
I offer dynamic, personalized music lessons that are focused but fun! I share a deep passion for music and pedagogy and give students the skills they need to succeed by creating a comfortable environment where he or she can improve as a player while enjoying themselves. I specialize in classical & pop styles but can also offer students an introduction to jazz and other contemporary styles like rock. Sight-reading, hand/body posture, and effective practice strategies are basic tenants of my instruction as is developing musicality in the player. Theory is integrated with an emphasis on chords, melody, and song structure. I encourage songs of the student's choice to be explored by means of sheet music, lead-sheet, or transcribing together by ear. As a singer-songwriter and having studied both classical and cont
emporary voice with a thorough understanding of proper vocal technique, I offer beginning voice lessons and encourage my piano students to explore their voices with me as well!

Bio:
Lilli L. began formal piano lessons at the young age of three-and-a-half in Sacramento, California. She studied classical piano on and off for thirteen years before expanding her musical repertoire to other genres and instruments. At 16 she began singing and songwriting on guitar and piano, and at 18 inherited a drum set she played daily. She resumed private piano instruction with a new teacher, Tatiana Scott, and completed all music theory, jazz theory, and ear-training courses at college under the tutelage of Tatiana and noted jazz pianist and professor Dr. Joe Gilman. She continued on to study classical voice at College of Marin after a move to the bay area in 2013, and studied contemporary voice with Amber Morris.

Despite extensive traveling and joining the workforce at a young age, by her early twenties music instruction had become her sole profession. Since then she has been thoroughly dedicated to her students’ success and is credited for having a sharp intuition for her students’ musical preferences and learning styles and for being a sensitive and empathetic mentor. With such a broad range of musical tastes she is happy and able to teach a spectrum of musical styles on piano and in voice. Despite great success teaching music in Marin County, she relocated to finish her degree in piano performance and contemporary voice and currently resides in the Upper East Side of New York, New York teaching, studying, and playing with her band Armadillo.

Whether it's a hobby or a serious endeavor, she welcomes all students and coordinates with them based on their goals and learning style.

Cancellation Policy :
Lessons are a weekly occurrence and both the student and teacher fare better with continuity of lessons. Please keep cancellations/reschedules to a minimum and within reason: illness, emergency, major holidays, school functions are excusable. Absences for other reasons (such as busyness, playdates, etc.) or without 24 hours notice result in being charged for the lesson. Please give ample notice for vacations so the teacher can plan accordingly. If sick, let your teacher know ahead of time so she can make an informed decision about her own health. Thank you!

I started playing guitar at age 11, taking lessons at the local music studio in Hackensack, NJ. I became heavily influenced by The Beatles after hearing their music and as a teenager played in local rock groups, having some success being in the bands Jona's Ark and The Yorkshire Pudding, opening for artists Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, John Mayall and backing up Gary U.S. Bonds. I started playing piano at 19 when I took a group piano class in college. I attended Berklee College of Music and studied guitar with Bill Leavitt and Pat Metheny. That's where I started learning about all the great jazz artists from Duke Ellington to Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Wes Montgomery to name a few. While at Berklee I also developed a love of the classical guitar and it's repertoire. After Berklee, I became a freelance musician and played guitar for
The Drifters, Del Shannon, The Shirelles, The Marvelettes, The Crystals, Chuck Berry, Leslie Gore and believe it or not Tiny Tim. I played guitar, harmonica, mandolin and banjo in productions of: Hair, Tommy, Big River, Fiddler On The Roof and Grease. I composed my own music and performed and co-wrote with others who also wrote their own music. I have always taught private guitar lessons as far back as I can remember. One notable student was Stevie Wonder's son Keita who I taught for 2 years at Stevie's home in northern New Jersey as well as CBS News Anchor Charles Osgood's daughter Annie. Currently I teach 20 private guitar students a week.. From 1994 to 2000, I was the guitarist for The Royal Scam (a Steely Dan Tribute) and during that period I was hired by Hal Leonard Music Corp. to write a guitar transcription book called "The Best of Steely Dan". I was also hired by Brother International Corp. to compose and record a national radio jingle called "P-Touch", with Corey Glover from the rock band Living Colour doing the vocal tracks.
In 1996 I went to William Paterson University to obtain my teacher certification in music education. After the 9/11 attacks, I co-wrote and arranged "America Home Of The Free". The song was used to raise thousands of dollars for the victims of The World Trade Center attacks. Presently I divide my time between teaching, which I enjoy as much as performing and playing guitar with a jazz quartet called ....and All That Jazz, whose 2005 CD "Reflections" was recorded, mixed and mastered in my home based 24 track recording studio in northern NJ. I am also involved in a mandolin / classical guitar project called Music Of The Ages and perform with a 10 piece band called Epic Soul.
As a teacher I am very patient with students and enjoy helping them reach their own musical goals. I emphasize knowing the basics and encourage students to study music theory and basic reading of standard notation. I always ask my students to bring in songs they want to learn as a way to motivate them to practice more.

*** Lesson Details ***
GUITAR: I expect my students to practice at least 5 days a week for at least a 1/2 hour per day. I use the Suzuki method for young students ages 8 to10. We continue learning basic folk songs by ear and then start reading standard notation and basic theory within 6 to 8 months along with classical guitar duets. For older students I use the Hal Leonard guitar method. After 3 months of lessons students can expect to know the basic open position chords and strum patterns to some basic songs as well as some famous guitar riffs and also be able to read some basic melodies in standard notation. After 6 months students will be able to play a 12 bar blues and improvise with the pentatonic and blues scales as well as learn moveable scales and chords and apply these to songs.

PIANO: I also start young piano students with the Suzuki method so they can play some five finger familiar melodies in a short time period. Then we progress to reading notation and eventually adding chord accompaniment to melodies. I use the Faber piano method for reading standard notation.

*** Studio Equipment ***
24 track recording studio, room for parents to sit 14' x 21'...completely furnished studio with guitars, amps, piano, drum machine, synthesizer, microphones...the works.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need a good quality and proper size guitar (for very young students) a music stand (for their home use) a foot stool, a metronome and books I assign along with an 8 1/2" X 11" blank manuscript book and a folder with side pockets to hold handout sheets. Piano students need their own instrument and the above materials minus the foot stool.

I've been taking lessons from Rob for 2 years now. He is a great teacher, classically trained, but very knowledgeable in all genres. I have learned a great deal and being taught the correct way. He pushes you to do better each and every week.

Cellist Benjamin L. made his solo debut in 1999 at the Merryall Center for the Arts, where critic for the Danbury News Times, Frank Merkling, called him “remarkably gifted”, with “a charming, warm tone”
. He has performed in various venues in the Tri-State area, including concerto performances with the Hartford Symphony, Farmington Valley Symphony and Musica Dolce Ensemble, and solo and chamber performances in Asia and Europe. He is an avid chamber musician, having performed with the Enao Ensemble in chamber concerts to benefit the charity, the Bishop’s Fund for Children, from 2000-2010, was the cellist and founding member of the Lorelei Piano Trio and has been a member of several other chamber music ensembles. As a free-lance cellist, he has performed with many diverse ensembles, accompanying the musical, “Time Between Us” in the New York Musical Theater Festival, appearing with the band, The Left Banke, playing with Ensemble 212 and Shattered Glass. In addition to performing, he is on the faculty of the Zen Music School, Port Jefferson Music Academy and coaches chamber music for Jeunes Virtuoses de New York, as well as teaching privately. He is also the artistic director of Concerts on the Slope, a chamber music series in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and the Artist-in-Residence for Music at Trinity of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Bronx.

Mr. L. has performed at several summer music festivals including the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Castleman’s Quartet Program, Music at Menlo and Pacific Music Festival, and has won top prizes in several competitions. His chamber music mentors have included members of the Emerson, Tokyo, American and Keller String Quartets, as well as Robert Mann, Nicholas Mann, Peter Frankl, Andre Michel Schub, and Daniel Epstein, Sylvia Rosenberg and several others. He has taken master classes with Keith Robinson and Colin Carr, and past teachers include Eric Dahlin, David Finckel, Julia Lichten and Clive Greensmith, as well as lessons with Marta Casals Istomin and Bonnie Hampton.

As an orchestral musician he has performed with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, the Empire State Sinfonia, the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra, the Salome Chamber Orchestra in New York City, and the Farmington Valley Symphony, as well as the Manhattan School of Music orchestras. I offer fun, creative, serious ways of learning how to be a complete musician, I am able to teach you how to play piano at a beginning to intermediate level, guitar, mostly beginning level, voice any level but not expert yet in all of this and so that is why I take
lessons myself in NYC to always get better. I am trained in the classical methods, but happy to experiment with others. I believe a solid technique in any level is the foundation and then, if you need more expertise, I am happy to refer you to others I know who teach in that style.

Each lesson , depending on your age, will have some kind of technical work, such as drills, work on whatever level you are at in music theory, sight reading, musicality and all components that would make you a complete musician, as I have been trained You will also have some FUN because it just would get boring and then practicing would be a pain instead of inspiring you. Games, little fun tests spelling musical words and the like,.

Patricia is an AMAZING teacher.

Personality: She is very welcoming, warm, funny and just a positive person to be around which bodes very well when it comes to learning and stepping outside of your comfort zone.

Knowledge: Just by looking at her credentials you know that she has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to music. However, her greatest gift is being able to relay all of that information to someone who may not have a very strong musical background. She is also very adept at making connections making the learning process fun and understandable.

Lessons: I have been taking lessons with Patricia for months now for voice. The greatest part of the lessons are that she does not only focus on improving your voice on a technical level. She helps with mental preparation, ear training, music theory and great deal of other things which helps students to become more well rounded. I believe this also helps students to grow in their area of study much faster.

Misc: Patricia greatly encourages her students to perform. If you are not comfortable going to an open mic, Patricia hosts a performance event for her students. This provides a safe and secure environment for students to express themselves an apply what they have learned in lessons.

I recently performed and while nervous the mental preparation that I described above helped me to "put on a show". I will continue taking lessons with Patricia and I am grateful for everything I have learned and experience in my time.

I have worked with her teaching three year old beginner drum group classes, all the way to masterclasses for college students at CUNY on techniques to use when improvising in complex time signatures. Music theory can be a difficult and confusing subject for some, and I'll do my best to make it clear for you!

I consider my knowledge of theory to be a working jazz knowledge and less formal and technical, definitely a jazz approach.

About Imraan
I'm a pro saxophonist in NYC, currently performing both in the NYC area and internationally.

In the last 5 years, I have been performing with various bands in the area, spanning rock, funk, soul, Latin, and especially jazz. Performing has taken me to France, Switzerland, Italy, China, and most recently aboard luxury cruise ships.

I have been teaching privately and through a private music school for the past 10 years.

*** Lesson Details ***
I offer three distinct types of lessons.

1) For 7-12 grade music students, I offer lessons geared towards preparing you for the NYSSMA competition. We work on the basic requirements for participation, can work together to narrow down the options and select the right piece for you to perform, and improve your musicality as a whole. I have sent many students to NYSSMA, all with positive res
ults. 2) My more expansive lessons are for beginner musicians and up. We work as basically as scales, modes, and fingerings, as well as a little bit of jazz history. As you progress, we dig deeper into jazz theory, focusing on the standards and improvisational theory. Like anything else, you get out of it what you put into it, and as long as you are willing to work towards becoming a better player, you will. 3) For NON-SAXOPHONE students with an interest in jazz improvisational techniques, I offer jazz improvisation lessons. This requires an intermediate level of proficiency on your instrument. We cover standards, different techniques to apply over different patterns of chord changes, and even basic elements of composition.

I like to keep the atmosphere light and positive during lessons, so we can have a good time and still be learning. I love to work on appropriate music that the student suggests, or has an interest in. Pending the level of the student, we may even arrange for special appearances at some of my performances.

My son Nicholas, 10 yrs old, has been taking saxophone lessons with Imraan for about a month. Searching for a young motivated teacher who is up to date with todays music is very difficult. My fear was for Nicholas to get discouraged in his saxophone playing and music with a non motivated instructor.
Imraan has been the perfect match for Nick. He is not only an excellent saxophone player but a great instructor. He motivates my son with his saxophone playing, has patients with his teachings and with kids, is up to date with todays music and most important, my son cant wait for his next lesson.

Vanessa is a great instructor! She has helped me improve so much. My tone of voice has improved a lot since I started my vocal lessons. Not only that, there are many songs I couldn't sing before and now I could sing them. Vanessa will provide you with all the tools and techniques you need to improve, however you have to put it hard work too if you want to improve.

I'm a Brazilian musician around 30 years old, MASTER in Piano Performance, Professor at a University in BRAZIL and in the US, also Bachelor in Singing and Composition. I love interacting with classes of piano and Jazz singing, for kids and adults. I have a big repertoire of classical music, pop, musical theater and all the Brazilian songs. Also, the practice can include harmony studies, ear training, improvisation and composition. The concept of my methodology is using creativity, technology and good music to make the students play all the songs they want and develop skills. I can teach in English, Portuguese or Spanish.

Professor Cândida L. Borges is an inspiring world class musician, classically trained and rooted in Brazilian culture. Her artistic work mixes folkloric music, bossa nova, pop, latin and african music, jazz, and all styles of world music. After 15 years teaching in a University in Brazil and in the United States, now she created a program in which she offers her experience as a music educator for all ages music students and from all over the world. Master in Piano Performance, Bachelor also in singing, composition, studies in music production and electronic music, sound therapy, special needs and coaching, Professor Borges is a true educator and artist.

Her methodology consists of modern approach to music education and music therapy, that connects creativity, repertoire, technology and skill development. Choose your subject: piano, keyboard, jazz voice and singing, music theory, ear training, harmony, songwriting.

BACKGROUND

Ms. Borges combines her formal academic studies in University as an artist and educator with studies and certifications in Dalcroze, Linklater, improvisation, circle singing, music production, technology and specially her experience in studios and playing with musicians all over America. Special call to “O Passo” – a Brazilian methodology on rhythm and pitch, connecting body and voice to learn music, performance and reading. Fantastic!

ONLINE LESSONS

You can connect by Skype or you can also choose to use FaceTime or Google Hangout. There are easy instructions that you receive to make sure you are all set to start. You have the chance to record your class and you will receive a link with all the material we use in class. In tour or local, classes must go on!

IN NEW YORK

If you are in New York Area, come for class in one of the studios. We are at midtown west, in great locations and professional studios.

PRICES

Prices starts at $30 for 30 minutes online lessons. You can choose between 30, 45, 60 and 90 minutes lessons. Combo choices of more than 1 subject – you can combine piano and singing, or singing and songwriting for example.

SPECIAL PROJECTS AND COMMUNITY

You will start making part of our special projects, that include shows, concerts, events, CDs, month challenges, gifts, and other surprises. Touring different cities, you will make part of a community that gets together to watch shows, to perform and to travel – our performances happen in different cities, including New York and Rio de Janeiro! I had my first lesson and I am really excited and encourage. I feel that Candida was genuinely interested in understanding my goals and is committed to helping me achieve them. I also know that she is very well versed in all facets of music and I can learn from her. Time to Practice!

Candida is a great teacher and artist. She does way more than just teaching technique because she does her best to get the artist inside you. Candida helps you discover your inner self and get it out through your voice. She is patient, objective, and very kind. She is by far one of the greatest teachers I've had the chance to work with, not just for music but any subject.
I highly recommend Candida, and I'm looking forward to continuing my music education with her.

New York based flutist, Kelley, has performed in notable New York venues including 54 Below, Joe's Pub, and Birdland. She has also performed throughout the United States as well as in Italy and Southeast Asia. Ms. B. received her second Masters Degree in Contemporary Performance at Manhattan School of Music studying with Dr. Tara O’Connor. She received her Bachelors and first Masters from Lynn University Conservatory of Music and studied with Jeffery Khaner and Renee Siebert. Kelley has performed with notable New York based ensembles such Tactus, STARK RAVING, Shouthouse ensemble, and the New York Symphonietta. She cofounded the Lynn University New Music Ensemble, participated in Cortona Sessions for New Music, and the 2012 Vanguard Contemporary Music Festival. Hello! I am a Classical Voice (Opera) Major studying at Mannes College within the New School. Mannes is one of the most highly-rated operatic training programs in the country, and, thus far, has helped me acquire many skills as a both an opera singer. I have attended programs such as the Boston University Tanglewood Institute and the Chautauqua Voice Institute. I am a recipient of multiple talent-based scholarships, including but not limited to George London Scholarship(s), Richard Tucker Award(s), and the Mannes Dean's Scholarship while I have been in school. I also received my degree from the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division after studying voice there for five years while I was in High School.
