I started studying classical piano at the age of 6 and continued through high school before going on to study with Robert Shannon at Oberlin Conservatory, where I majored in music history and theory (as well as English and creative writing - I've always had a lot of interests!). I also sang in choirs from a early age, including my high school's Madrigal Singers, the MMEA Northeast District Chorus, and the Oberlin College Choir, a select group which performs regularly with the Cleveland Orchestra. After graduation, I tried out a variety of musical activities, including singing with a semi-professional a Capella group, None of the Above, and appearing in local community theatre productions. But I finally realized that I'm most comfortable behind a piano, whether playing and conducting for musical theatre, coaching singers, writing music for
youth productions, or teaching the next generation of music lovers how to navigate the keys. And while I perform mostly Broadway-style music now, my classical training continues to serve me well; using good technique not only allows me to play more accurately and expressively, it also protects me from injuries that might otherwise arise from long rehearsals and a busy performance schedule.

I'm excited about where my musical journey has taken me, and I look forward to helping you start or continue yours.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm serious about making sure my students learn basic skills, like reading notes and rhythms and learning to interpret music artistically, that will serve them not only as developing pianists but in any future musical endeavors. To that end, I choose method books (such as the Faber Piano Adventures series) and supporting materials that build a strong foundation of musical knowledge, and I help each student construct a practice schedule that's appropriate to his or her level.

However, although I do maintain a certain amount of structure, I am very patient and relaxed in my approach to each individual student. I recognize that not everyone learns at the same speed or in the same way, so as long as I can tell you're putting in the effort, I will also try my hardest to find what works for you! And I know it's easiest to stay motivated when working on music you love, so I like to supplement the regular lesson materials with music of the student's choice, whether that means offering a selection of level-appropriate classical pieces, helping locate an arrangement of a favorite song, or coming up with our own arrangement if a good one doesn't already exist. And while my own background is strongest in classical and Broadway styles, I'm happy to have students work on music from any genre. One of the best parts of teaching is when I get to learn something new as well.

Malden studio: Dedicated studio with 88-key weighted keyboard, recording equipment, and large collection of sheet music. Parents can sit in on lessons or wait downstairs. Parking in driveway or on street. We have cats.

Bedford studio: Front room setup for lessons with upright piano and stereo. Laptop available to record lessons. Parents can sit in on lessons. Parking available in driveway and street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to provide a piano or suitable keyboard (88 keys, weighted keys or at least somewhat touch-sensitive, with a clear piano sound). For vocal students, it would be helpful for them to have a separate music stand as well.

*** Specialties ***
In terms of vocal music, I am definitely most comfortable with Broadway-style repertoire, but I have experience with some of the classical repertoire as well. As a pianist I have a solid classical background but am also very familiar with Broadway playing styles; I think I've done a little of everything at this point, so I could adapt to any interests my students might have. I am trained in the Taubman piano technique, which focuses on healthy, effective motions, so I try to incorporate some elements of that in my teaching, to the extent
that I think a particular student will benefit from it.

As for methods: for beginning and intermediate piano students I tend to use the Faber Piano Adventures series, supplemented by additional exercise books (Dozen a Day, for example), simple classical pieces (Bastien publishes a book that I like), or other materials depending on the student's interest and level of achievement (pop, Broadway, etc.). For advanced students I would use different exercise books (Hanon, Czerny, etc.) and focus more on repertoire than method, continuing to teach theory and technique as it comes up.

For vocal students I have mostly stuck to whatever materials/repertoire the student was most interested in, plus vocal exercises to support any problems or challenges they might be working on (e.g., range, vowel formation, learning a healthy mix/belt technique).

I took beginner's guitar lessons with Alex. He took into account what my playing goals were, stylewise and whatnot. He's super knowledgeable on musical subjects besides just guitar. I've come away feeling that I have good foundational knowledge to build upon as I progress in my playing. I had the five lesson package, which I felt suited my needs. Tip: If you do something like that, space out your lessons at least every other week, so that you have time to practice and grasp what you're learning. Be sure to ask questions if something is new to you, especially if you're a beginner. I highly recommend guitar lessons from Alex!

A good understanding of music theory will allow you to more efficiently recognize your strengths and limitations. It cultivates the ability to hear music more intelligently and teach yourself several instruments. People that can pick up and play any instrument with minimal effort, likely have a very good foundation in music theory. Music theory also cultivates the ability for the ear to recognize context and patterns in music you already know. My musical background is uniquely rooted in classical training and popular music (non-classical) experience. I have professionally played toured and/or taught on a variety of instuments including Bass, Drums, Guitar, Piano, Ukulele and Voice for the past 8 years all over the world. My main focus has been bass guitar, on which I've played in over a dozen local bands. In addition, I received my Music BA from CU Boulder in 2014. I can provide most necessary lesson materials, however it is necessary that students have their own instruments on which to play and practice. ***Some additional background to my experience***
I grew up "noodling". I avoided the difficult task of learning to read proficiently until I was almost 18. Looking back I realize that for me, music was a way to relax and pause internal dialogue. I would create music, especially on the piano that was entirely my own, and based solely on intuition. I got by in piano lessons and choir for so many years as kid by relying on an intuitive ability to aurally recall music and "play by ear". Eventually, I was turned on to the necessity of being able to read when I was accepted into a nationally competitive choral program at Fairview High School under the direction of Ron Revier. Shortly after that, I picked up a guitar and discovered music theory.
Realizing that reading, and theory were inherently different things allowed by to accelerate quickly at music theory which opened so many doors for me creatively. Suddenly, my ability to improvise in context and write my own songs was born.
I realized that every note I sang or played was part of an essential structure, whether or not I was paying attention to it. This is why I particularly enjoy teaching aural skills, sight reading, and music theory in conjunction with whatever repertoire or skillset a student wants to learn. These things facilitate becoming one's own teacher which is the most important thing I can pass on to a student. If you can contextualize everything you hear, you can more easily pursue whatever type of music inspires you.
Understanding theoretical things like musical modes creates a structure around the seemingly elusive nature of musical improvisation. It comes naturally to some, but is stubbornly avoided by others. I assure you, anyone can do it with some guidance. Through the years, I have developed a handful of shortcuts and tools that allow elementary musicians to start creating their own music that is not necessarily oriented in genre or style, but can be applied to all of them. I look forward to sharing my passion with new students!

This was my 14 y/o and my very first lesson. We learned chords, strum patterns, and melody. Super fun evening! Julian even gave my 12 y/o a lesson on his drum set while we practiced on our guitars. Now the family is hooked! Excited for our lesson next week.

Julian has spent lots and lots of fun time with his nephews and nieces (age 13-2), playing music with and teaching--ukulele, piano, guitar and drums over the last few years, and as a result they all have some great skills, confidence, and excitement about music. He's kind and very tuned in to where his students are.
I'm his Dad so I've seen how rewarding it can be for his students. He's also given me a basic set of skills on the guitar. It goes without saying, I recommend him highly!!

I generally use the Schirmer and Thompson books for piano lessons. I don't consider myself strict but I do expect students to practice at least an hour a day.

I am one of those individuals for whom teaching is just something that I have to do. I started giving music lessons sometime in the 80's and have loved working with all levels of skill and experience. My students say that I am patient, adaptive and encouraging, committed to making music fun.

I have a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in Jazz Piano and am comfortable and fluent in a number of musical styles, including pop, rock, gospel, traditional hymnody, jazz, and R&B. Although I love and study classical music, it is not something I teach at this point.

In addition to private lessons and performing, I do music transcription, workshops, and all forms of vocal and instrumental arranging. Bil Mooney-McCoy is a life-long Boston resident who has been playing music all his life. Having served as a church musician for more
than 30 years, I am currently the Director of Worship for the chapel at Gordon College, a small Christian school north of Boston. I'm often involved in city-wide music events in Boston’s faith-based community and in demand as a featured musician for church services, parties, concerts and other events.

There are at least two ways that might set me apart from other teachers.

Firstly, I have honed and developed "people skills". I am an ordained minister and have held positions where I was formally and informally in a mentoring/pastoring role. I bring that sensitivity to my music lessons, understanding that personal and emotional issues can be triggered by the engagement with the music and skills being worked on.

Secondly, I've had a remarkable broad base of experience. My coursework has exposed me to a wide breadth of ideas and tools; my work life has been long and varied; I have had extensive experience in many different cultural contexts, both musically and otherwise; and I work well with many age groups and skill levels.

Regarding my teaching approach:
For beginners, I have a fairly consistent set of topics and skill sets to cover. Generally, in a few months, piano students (particularly those in middle school through adulthood) should know how to play major, minor and seventh chords, how to read simple chord charts and some very basic accompanying skills. Guitar students should know a dozen open chords and have been introduced to barre chords, and to have learned several styles of finger picking as well as strumming. Bass students should know how to find notes on the board and will have begun to learn how to fill out a song with an expressive but non-obtrusive bass line.

For intermediate students, the pace, direction and focus on lessons depends upon the goals and passions of the student along with the amount of time he or she has to practice. My goals for students at this level and beyond is to learn how to learn. I will use outstanding recorded examples of particular skills or stylistic idioms to help my students understand and master each new concept. I often will check in with my student to make sure that we are on track with what they are hoping for.

For advanced students, we will generally target very specific objectives. I also try to add elements of theory, history, culture, and even life lessons to apply to the topics we address. Because of my background in pastoral ministry, I can serve as a mentor addressing the emotional and relational issues of playing music as well as its technical aspects.

An EMMY-nominated film composer, I also teach songwriting for students interested in composition. Lessons are tailored to each student, incorporating a diverse mix of classical and contemporary repertoire and a practice plan that addresses each student's needs and musical goals.

Drawing upon my extensive background as a performer in music and theater, I encourage stu
dents to take creative risks, to be expressive, and above all, to play with joy! All students have the opportunity to share their progress with family and friends during fun, low-stress, semi-annual recitals. (Participation is optional but highly encouraged!)

Teaching Materials:
I use the Faber and Faber Piano Adventures books as a foundation, but also incorporate other music, including classical, pop and theatre music, depending upon student interest and what I feel will best help my students to stretch and grow! Students are also welcome to request pieces they would like to learn; I will do my best to find or create an arrangement that's appropriate to your current skill level.

Bio:
Allison has had considerable success as both a touring singer songwriter and composer for film, TV, and theater. She has shared the stage with Petra Haden, Rachael Sage, Fred Armisen, Lelia Broussard and many others. Songs from her most recent record, Sweet and Vicious, have been heard on Lifetime's Dance Moms, NBC's Late Night with Carson Daly, as well as shows on PBS, Bravo, Oxygen and TLC. As a composer, she was nominated for an EMMY and received a Telly Award for the music she composed for the documentary 5000 Miles from Home. Most recently, she composed music for the indie romantic comedy Get Happy, which premiered at the 2015 Manhattan FilmFestival. After many years in New York City, she now resides in Collingswood, New Jersey with her family.

Allison taught my daughter for 4 years. We found her to be patient and nurturing, and she was able to keep my daughter motivated, which is not always easy, since my daughter quickly becomes frustrated when things don't come to her right away. Allison is great with kids and has a knack for keeping lessons fun, even while she's challenging students to be their best. The recitals were a real highlight for us. They gave our daughter a real goal to work for, and as we got to know the other families over the years, it was fun to watch their kids improving too.

Music theory has been a part of my life since I was a child. I went to undergraduate and graduate school to learn even more music theory. In undergrad, I studied 8 levels of music theory, starting with the basics and branching into post-tonal and current music theory. I would love to share with students my love for theory and help them realize their own love of it. Theory is a tool that helps with every aspect of music- performance, composition, education, you name it! I've also taken many courses on songwriting, and am happy to include songwriting theory and lyric lessons in music theory lessons.

I'm a film composer by trade, but I love teaching as well. I love sharing my passion for music with others. I have a BM from Appalachian State University in piano performance and music theory/composition. I also have an MFA in music composition for the screen from Columbia College Chicago. I studied abroad in Ireland for a summer and learned traditional Irish music. I've been playing piano and composing since I was a young child, and picked up folk instruments along the way. Folk music has been a constant source of joy in my life, and I am continually learning more about it. Music is what gets me out of bed in the morning!

It was a great first lesson - she assessed where I was, fixed some technique problems I was having and gave me things to work on for next time. She's very friendly and approachable, which is great for new-student anxiety ;-).

First lesson couldn't be better! Connor was totally patient with my kiddo, and she gave good advice on what to look for in a smaller accordion and variations in shoulder straps to help my tiny daughter not get tired from trying to hold up a big (at least for her) accordion.

As a teacher, I have taught privately and in the classroom for the past 14 years. I have taught for the Metropolitan Opera Guild Urban Voices as a Master Teaching Artist, for the Boston Symphony Orchestra's Days in the Arts program, for Watertown Children's Theatre, and for the North End Music and Performing Arts Center where her students have shared the stage with the Boston Landmarks Orchestra and the Boston One City Choir.

As a performer, her favorite roles include Anita in "West Side Story", Jo March in "Little Women", and Carmen in "Carmen".

Miss Alexandra was such a patient and helpful instructor. She was extremely knowledgeable and went over the basic rudiments of piano. By the end of the lesson was able to execute a few scales and play a few pieces from beginning to end! I hope to take voice lessons from her as well!
