What a great learning experience. I came the first time to her as an adult beginner who has no musical background whatsoever. She is super helpful, very informative, and fun to work with.

I teach beginner and intermediate violin students helping them develop their bow technique and intonation.

About Yoon Jae
I am a highly-skilled professional musician certified as a certified Steinway education partner with over 14 years of teaching experience. I offer lessons in classical piano, violin, viola, conducting, arranging/orchestration as well as private tutoring in ear training and theory.

My main instrument is piano and I specialize in teaching students who already play the instrument and wish to get a more in-depth experience with piano literature by learning new repertoire and developing their technique. I also teach adult beginners and young beginners whose parents have a dedicated commitment to having their children make music an integral part of their education. For all my students, I emphasize the importance of practicing efficiently and developing critical listening skills. This encourages consistent improvement and whatever your perso
nal piano goals and skill levels are, I will help you improve and enjoy playing the piano more. I am very patient, encouraging and supportive of your desire to play the piano better. In addition to piano, I teach beginner and intermediate violin and viola students.

I encourage all my students to perform once or twice a year but this is entirely optional and based on the student's comfort level.

I am available and willing to travel to your home for an extra fee as long as public transportation is available.

I'm so glad I ended up with Yoon Jae for my very first violin lesson. He took me through the first steps - as basic as holding the violin - really carefully and not at all condescendingly, even though I'm an adult who never even learned to read music. In fact, he couldn't have been more patient. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone who wants to learn violin in a supportive atmosphere!

Yoon is engaging, motivating, kind and easy to work with. I'm an adult beginner and am enjoying the process of learning to read music, playing the instrument and gaining a greater appreciation for music generally. Highly recommend.

I began playing violin as a young child, and progressed to several hours a day during my teenage years. I taught throughout college, both as a violin instructor and as a private instructor.

My teaching programs vary according to the level of the student, and the goal he or she has set for him/herself, be it as a support to a school educational program or a personal love for music and/or the violin that seeks to develop itself into a practice.

About Gabrielle
A violinist is a musical knight: the round shield which once protected the heart has become a sound-resonating violin, the linear sword a bow, yet the fundamental gestures are the same. The active right directs according to linear rules, the left spirals inwards.

Dear Student,

My name is Gabrielle A. I am French, in my mid-twenties, and hold a MA in education. Simple, to the point, confident, smiling and fun, I engage quickly and well with those around me.

While teaching a standard violin apprenticeship curriculum, I approach the instrument from the perspective of movement: what qualitative gesture is at play behind a particular stroke or fingering?

Imagine playing violin according to lines of force, directions and qualities of movement between the right and the left! Musical sound, and its higher sibling tone, are born from
the qualitative interplay between right and left meeting in the human chest.
By inwardly experiencing the instrument as a threefold instrument (violin, bow and violinist) we can step away from the view that the violin is 'somewhere out there', a foreign object to be more or less painfully mastered.

I believe that as instrumentalists we ourselves are a part of the tone we produce.
I will therefore look with you at the kinesiology behind a correct posture and encourage you to experience the playing process as a circle between the violin, the bow and the violinist.

I hope to hear from you, meet you, and work with you!

Yours sincerely,
Gabrielle

Gabrielle is great at teaching my 9 year old french. She makes his lessons fun and keeps him engaged so that he always looks forward to his lessons. She does a great job engaging with the interests of her students, instead of sticking to a rigid lesson plan and losing the student. For example, quietly inserting verb conjugation and tense training into the telling of a story her student is determined to share with her. She really works with the kid's interests and gets their buy-in and engagement.

Want to learn violin? My students have unique lessons tailored to their needs and own personal goals. Basic skills and advanced techniques are taught alongside music interpretation and expression, as well as basic music history, music theory, and other tools necessary to make informed performance decisions. What do you want to learn? Tell me and we can discover it together!

About Calvin
As a classically trained violist with orchestral, chamber, and solo performance experience, my teaching style is geared towards performance and expression. I don't adhere to any one book of teaching, adjusting my teaching to the unique needs of each student. My teachers came from different pedagogical backgrounds; as a result, I have a wide array of teaching tools available to pass on to my students. I have taught with the Longy School of Music's El Sistema program and had a Teaching Artist residence with Cambridge Public Schools. I hold a BM in Viola performance from the Lamont School of Music and a MM in Viola Performance from the Longy School of Music.

I have played viola since I first began my musical studies at age 9. As a result, I have seen teachers hold viola students back, simply because they play the "lesser" instrument in th
e viola family. I do not hold my students back and I hold them all to the same high level of playing, regardless of which instrument they play.

I've never had any experience with orchestral instruments before. After one lesson with Calvin, I'm learning to read music again. He showed me proper technique as well. I feel that I will be progressing quickly under Calvin's instruction. My first lesson flew by, and I learned so much in a very short amount of time. His attention to smaller details in technique are very helpful as well. I absolutely recommend Calvin as a viola instructor!

Frequent student recitals, music theory, and certifications.

About Naomi
In 2004, I received my master of music degree in piano performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. In 2006, I entered the Doctor of Musical Arts program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, with full scholarship in piano performance and worked in the music department as a collaborative piano teaching assistant for four years. I taught both undergraduate and graduate students.
During my sixteen years of teaching, I have trained students of a variety of ages
and ethnic backgrounds in both public and private institutions. As a teacher, I strive to help my students develop a mindful and musical ear by stressing a genuine appreciation for music beyond the mechanics of piano instruction. For advanced students, I challenge them with an increasingly more technical and demanding repertoire. For the
past several years, I sought and created opportunities for my students to perform in public and build their confidence, such as music competitions and local concerts.

My violin and viola students study classical Russian technique--used by the best players in history. It involves efficient use of the body, both to avoid injury when playing and also to get the best possible sound from the instrument. Students progress in technique, musicality, and music theory.

About Elana
Hello,

My name is Elana. I'm a professional violinist and enjoy teaching students of all ages and levels. My students have ranged from ages 4-64. Their goals have ranged from pure enjoyment to those considering a career in music. My goal is to help each student play to the best of their abilities and for them to enjoy the lessons. Violin is my passion, which comes through in my enthusiasm during lessons. I am gentle and patient but also honest and very particular about what to look for when practicing.

I take great pride in teaching the Russian method. Not only is the technique I teach used by the best violinists of all time, it also emphasizes efficient and correct use of the body to avoid injury and develop a tone with richness and projection.

What I look for in a student is a commitment to practicing every day. It's an
adjustment in the beginning for many, but once established simply becomes part of the day, like brushing your teeth. Over time, students hear improvements from practicing consistently and this creates a very positive experience. The violin becomes a source of joy and confidence.

Violin lessons help develop skills such as coordination and focus at the highest level, persistence, confidence, creativity, patience, and many other "life" skills whose benefits extend far beyond music lessons. Many people who achieve success in a career outside music later in life often credit their music lessons as having been key in that process.

As far as my musical background, I received my music degree from Rutgers University, where I was a recipient of the Marryott Music Scholarship. Upon graduation I freelanced as a violinist in the NYC metro area. My major teachers include Neil Weintrob and Lewis Kaplan.

As a teacher I have 20 years of experience. I've worked in various programs and currently teach violin and viola lessons at a local private school, in addition to running a private studio of violin and piano students. My violin students have been concertmaster, principal players, and section players in orchestras such as All-County, Region I, and NY Youth Symphony.

Feel free to contact me with any additional questions you may have. I look forward to working with you.

Students are given detailed instructions on how to practice and eventually how to create their own practice sessions. Julia is very patience and work with students of all ages. She believes that the biggest challenges for adult music students is not skipping lessons or practice sessions. She is convinced through experience that adult beginners can achieve great improvement if they put as much consistent efforts in the instruments as the younger students. So, practice more!

About Julia
Experienced violin teacher with Master degree in violin performance. Julia likes to play violin or piano with the students on a weekly basis to ensure the students get plenty of ensemble time before getting into orchestra. Her focus on techniques helps the students to be more expressive with the music. She is also Suzuki Certified and could use a combination of Suzuki method or traditional method. She teaches music theory and harmony to students who are interested in the subject and also introduce composition skills into lessons.

I am looking for students who are willing to have fun and play some of their favorite pieces, and students who want to be the best in their school or region. If that sounds like you, contact me today! I can't wait to work with you!
