Welcome to my teacher profile! My name is Barbee and I am an active professional singer with over ten years of piano and voice teaching experience. I enjoy teaching both children and adults. Both voice and piano lessons are based on a foundation of healthy technique while incorporating musicianship skills and encouraging the student to develop their own creativity. While my focus as a performer is opera and other classical music, I am experienced in teaching Broadway/musical theater, pop, rock, R&B, folk, and other styles and genres. I encourage my students to explore new styles and apply good technique to any style they may choose to sing or play.

As a member of both NATS (National Association for Teachers of Singing) and ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) I am constantly working to improve my teaching skills by keeping up with the latest pedagogical research. I love sharing new tips and techniques with my students!

I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. My background includes ten years of classical training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldekrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. In acting I have studied with renowned Stanislavsky scholar Sonia Moore and Master acting teacher of the Strasberg Method, Marcia Haufrecht. I received a B.A. For comparative literature and creative writing at the State University of New York at Purchase and I am currently studying for a masters in social work at Walden University.
I believe, within all of us, Is the ability to express something distinctive and original. I work to help the student discover their individual and unique voice, weather it be through singing, acting or writing. I share with my students tools to gain the ability and con

Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the students individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the more apt they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the must compelling.

Crystal brings a lifetime’s experience of professional musicianship to each of her lessons. Born into a family of musicians, she sang her first solo at age 2. She also benefits her students with an extraordinarily diverse musical background, having worked as a vocalist in gospel, country, musical theater, jazz, classical, rock, pop and soul styles. Her performing career has taken her from L.A. church meetings to London’s Houses of Parliament.

Crystal hails originally from Los Angeles, CA - where her musical parents gave her a head start by including her in the family business the moment she was able to contribute. She went on to study classical voice, piano and music theory at The Boston Conservatory of Music. After concluding her studies in London, she returned home and began working regularly as a theater performer, appearing in twen
ty world premiers and re-imagined classics. Most notably she played the lead role of Keely Smith in the big band jazz musical “Louis and Keely: Live At The Sahara” during its eight-month run at Westwood’s Geffen Playhouse. She also formed her own rock band, The Honeysuckle Jones Revival, with whom she performed her own songs all over Los Angeles. And she began working as a studio session vocalist, providing demo vocals for other songwriters, as well as arranging and performing back-up vocals for original artists, including Laura Roppe (currently in the Top Ten on Billboard’s Uncharted list of emerging artists.) Crystal played the lead role of Brooke in the new operatic rock musical “The Burning Opera LA” during its Los Angeles run in 2011 as well as providing ensemble vocals and playing piano and bass. She also performs holiday tunes from the Golden Age of American songwriting with musical quartet The Sleigh Belles.

Crystal believes that music is serious business but that it should be fun. She encourages her students to play music they love, as well as expanding their musical knowledge. She is a firm believer in basics first and emphasizes theory and technique as the tools to support creativity and provide freedom, power and control. She believes effort beats talent every time and the student who practices consistently will see results, whatever their level of ability. Most of all, she believes we were all born to make music.

Lesson structure varies depending on the student's instrument, age, level of experience and musical style. However, all lessons focus on:

After 3 or 6 months of consistent lesson attendance and practice, students will have a clear understanding of how their instrument works and how to care for it. They will be able to read basic music notation. They will be working toward clearly defined musical goals and they will have at least three performance pieces learned.

Amazing singng instructor

Crystal has increased my daughter’s self-esteem and expressiveness through song. My daughter is now writing her own poetry and song lyrics, as well as being able to combat her once shyness quality. She loves to perform in front of others now and has a confidence level that amazes me, especially now that she is going into those “teen” years. Both my mom and dad were musicians and taught private lessons at home, so I grew up wanting to be a part of the music making. Now I am a university music educator who performs frequently as a soloist and collaborative pianist. I hold piano performance degrees from Carnegie Mellon and Yale. In addition, I've studied chamber music at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau (France) and vocal accompanying at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. I perform as a church musician, choral accompanist, and recital pianist in traditional and more modern styles. I'm active as a collaborative artist in competitions, auditions, and recordings. In the past three years I've been studying ballroom dancing for fun and as an extension of my interest in experiencing music from the standpoint of total body movement. For many years I taught young children from the Frances Clark "Music Tree" series. With more intermediate and advanced students I used the Alfred Series as well as volumes by James and Jane Bastien. This is a specialty of mine, as I have made my living as a collaborative pianist. In recent years I have studied more popular genres that include piano arrangements of Gershwin, Porter, Kern, Rodgers, and many other American composers. While I shy away from teaching these to young students (even of high school or college age), I do occasionally teach contemporary arrangements of hymn tunes (Mark Hayes, Larry Shackley, and others) to students who show promise in handling modern genres, which of course require no small amount of technique and discipline.

Alexandra has been teaching harp and piano around the country for eighteen years through her personal harp studio and the Salvi Showroom in Southern California. She has also worked as a sectional coach for the Orange County Youth Symphony, Asia America Youth Symphony, and Palos Verdes Regional Symphony Orchestra. *** Lesson Details ***

As a HARP teacher, all of my
students play scales, arpeggios, and technical exercises in
their lessons. I believe having a strong technical base is the foundation for
every part of playing and you can't learn without it. I will set the repertoire
for students according to their technical progress and although I may
take into consideration a student's desires to learn a certain piece, there has
to be time and they have to be ready for it. I have both short term and long
term goals for each student that involve theory, technical ability, and
repertoire: fun, orchestral and solo. Adult students still have to learn
technique, it makes things much more fun and easy six months later, I promise! Beginning students will learn how to read notes, understand basic theory, and technique in a short amount of time, so don't be scared if you have never had a music lesson before. 

I require all students make
at least half an hour a day commitment to practice. I teach mostly the Grandjany method of harp technique, however, I also use Salzedo and Renie methods
at times to fit a particular students' build and unique physical attributes as well as what the piece requires. I
have studied all techniques throughout my education and I find them all
beneficial for different reasons. I do, however, believe everyone is built
differently and the technique should help the harpist play and not hinder them
from achieving their goals. Everyone learns at a different speed, but as a
brand new musician, after six months practicing regularly, you should be able
to read music fluently, understand basic theory concepts, be able to play with
both hands and four fingers on each hand, play all of the basic scales and
arpeggios musically and be able to play at least one piece memorized.
Curriculum is based on the student's technical ability and issues and is
individually created – if you learn slower than someone else, don’t worry about
your pace. In the end, lessons are about you personally and not someone else.

As a PIANO teacher, I want students to learn about music and not just the piano. Students will learn basic music theory and basic scales as a part of their lessons. They will also occasionally choose a song of their choosing to work on chords. I do promote note reading and theory, so I am not the right teacher for students who don't want to invest time in learning the basics. These basics are the building blocks of all music and can be used for any instrument the student chooses to learn in the future.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have harps and a piano at my studio, so you do not need to bring your harp to lessons. If you don't own a harp, you can rent one for around $45/month from several sources. 

*** Specialties ***
HARP - Grandjany Technique with an incorporation of Salzedo and French school depending on the player's body type and technical difficulties. I make use of the ABRSM as well as local, national, and international competitions depending on the student's level of commitment.

PIANO - I teach basic piano for fun through an Intermediate level. Although some students choose to take CM and ABRSM exams, I do not push them. I want students to enjoy piano and music lessons.

About Dan
Dan K. is a professional freelance upright and electric bassist and teacher. He hails from West Des Moines, Iowa, where in high school he performed with the Iowa All-State Orchestra and All-State Jazz Band. He arrived in Chicago in 2009 to attend DePaul University, where he studied with renowned Chicago bassists Rob Kassinger, Kelly Sill, and Jason Heath, as well as jazz faculty Bob Lark, Tom Matta, Ron Perillo, and Bradley Williams. Dan obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies in 2013.

Dan plays with a wide variety of bands from Fleeting Suns (folk rock) to Calamity Flamtet (jazz/funk/fusion) to the Dog Patch Ramblers (bluegrass/swing/Americana). He also appears occasionally with many other Chicago groups, including The Right Now and Jared Rabin. He has played many of Chicago’s finest venues including Millennium Park, Gr
ant Park, The Jazz Showcase, House of Blues, Hard Rock Cafe, Cubby Bear, Schubas Tavern, Beat Kitchen, Reggies, Subterranean, Bottom Lounge, and many others, as well as performances all over the United States, Ireland, and England. He has also contributed to some half-dozen albums by various artists. For much of the year he keeps busy playing both on stage and in the orchestra pits of musical theater productions for companies such as Porchlight Music Theater, NightBlue Performing Arts Company, and The Royal George Theater.

He loves helping students to become the best musicians they can be, and tailors his teaching style and material to suit each individual.

It's hard to say enough about how happy we are to have found John. My 2 boys love taking lessons with him, but yet still he challenges them and holds them to a high standard. John is a talented and knowledgeable pianist, and a very friendly and approachable person. A top notch instructor.
