My approach to teaching the cello incorporates mindfulness, body awareness, and deliberate practice, and I strongly believe in simplifying technique and practice methods, and leading you to your own discoveries rather than just telling you what to do. In order to reach your potential as a cellist, you need to train both the body and the mind. I am a strong believer in mental practice and being able to hear the sound you want before you play - however, this is only half the battle; you also want to set yourself up for success by training your body to feel comfortable and relaxed while still maintaining structure. I have studied with the top cello pedagogues in the world, including Hans Jensen, Richard Aaron, Ralph Kirshbaum, Desmond Hoebig, and Frans Helmerson to name a few. The methods I’ve learned and developed on my own can be taught from the very beginning of a cellist’s journey, and I can’t wait to share them with you!

Lukas was incredibly helpful as a teacher because it's clear that he's spent so much time over the last several years thinking about how the cello works and how to constantly be improving as a player. Lukas knows the best exercises to help solve whatever problems you may have as a player, and he has the real-world experience to back it up. I was particularly impressed by his ability to break down exactly what goes into creating a beautiful tone on the cello. He made me see my own technique differently and opened my eyes to aspects of cello playing that I had never thought of before. But most importantly, Lukas is a great teacher because he leads you to your own solutions. He won't just give you the answer to a specific passage of music, he will give you the tools to level up as a player, which you can then apply to anything you play. I would highly recommend taking lessons with Lukas Goodman.

We’ve been lucky to have Mary Alice work with our 13 year old daughter for the past 6 months. Mary Alice chooses songs that my daughter loves and is eager to master. I’ve been taking Mary Alice’s classes for a couple of months now and my singing has improved a lot including intonation, rhythm, and tone. Mary Alice is very patient and caring, she is the best music teacher I have ever worked with. All the homework is fun and takes my interests into account. When Mary Alice found out I play ukulele, she incorporated it into our lessons so that I could accompany my singing.
