Private Music Theory Teacher

Covering any part of historical periods including the middle ages and renaissance, to contemporary practices. Students often find music theory much less intimidating and more fascinating than they might first expect. Rather than being based on rules and dogmas, my approach is based on music as heard and experienced.

About Alan

Alan Retamozo is an active composer-guitarist based out of Austin, TX. His extensive composition and performance experience includes appearances with: Adam Rudolph and GO Organic Orchestra, Austin New Music Co-op, Revel, New Media Art and Sound Summit (COTFG), Density 512, Liminal Sound Series, SoundSpace Series at the Blanton Museum of Art, Sonic Transmissions, and his own composer-led group, Slant Ensemble. Coming from a jazz background, his work focuses on creative group improvisation, graphic and experimental notation, and conductor-led spontaneous group composition as well as traditional systems of notation. He holds degrees in jazz composition from Berklee College of Music (BA) and the University of Texas, Butler School of Music (MM).

Alan is also a founding member of Live Oak Trio, a string trio specializing in weddings and spe

cial events based out of Austin, TX.

LESSONS
The development of fundamental music skills, such as a continuing exploration of harmony, rhythm, and listening skills, are an integral part of my approach to instrumental studies. With over 12 years of teaching experience, I have worked with students of all ages and interests. There is always more to explore, and everyone has room for improvement. Above all, my approach to teaching and personal practice is all about collaboration, exploration, and connection.

As a music major--with subsequent professional jazz, composition and songwriting experience--I feel confident to teach you music theory from any of a variety of angles, including: music reading basics (notation, rhythm and playing on piano), understanding chords/keys/scales (intermediate level) and writing/arranging/playing/improvising with this knowledge as your foundation (intermediate to advanced). I can help you prepare for exams (including Trinity, high school and college) as well.

About Jennifer

I am a professional singer-songwriter and have been teaching lessons fulltime for the last 12 years. I teach students of all ages and levels of experience. My current range of students include: kids with learning/developmental disabilities, teenagers who have starred in school musicals, and performing adult singer-songwriters. Whatever your background or desire, I can help you to cultivate your unique musical potential, and to strengthen your creative voice.

As a professional vocalist and pianist, I have worked freelance, in a variety of settings, over the years--including solo, in wedding bands, small jazz and rock/pop groups and with big bands. I have been singing with the Mood Swings Big Band for 6+ years. During that time, we have performed at the White House, the Chamber of Commerce and in Kennebunkport, Maine (at the Bush e

state).

I also have an extensive professional and personal background in meditation (10 years), astrology (5 years) and healing (particularly Reiki, 4 years). I am very interested in the intersection between a healing/mindfulness-awareness approach and singing/playing piano.

I read previous reviews which assisted me in selecting Jen. After connecting with her I realized she had the perfect location (less than 10 mins from my house in Catonsville) and professional patience with my twin 14 yr old sons. They had a little experience before the lessons with Jen, but after only a few lessons, their piano/keyboard playing was much sharper than before. She has a beautiful voice and the boys always felt really positive after each lesson. They were more eager to practice at home to demonstrate the skills she taught them previously. Also, Jen hand writes lessons for the boys, which helped them better understand sheet music. She's a Gem. Well worth the investment!

Private Music Theory Teacher

I am a student at Belmont who has recently gone through theory myself so it is still very fresh in my head and use it regularly in my own works. Able to help teach in conventional and unconventional ways.

About Matthew

Hello!
My name is Matthew and I am a student at Belmont University studying everything that has to do with Bass. I am 20 years old and have extensive experience teaching people of all ages both music and sports! I am very relaxed and understand the desire to learn songs and things you enjoy hearing on the radio over scales and arpeggios. Through what you enjoy listening to and playing we can incorporate everything else, such as scales and arpeggios, to help you gain an understanding for the reason music sounds the way it does and how the bass influences that! Look forward to hearing from you all and helping you become the best bass player that you can be!

Matt's a great teacher, musician and person all around. I've played guitar for years now but I always leave feeling like I've learned something useful and its never a dull time! I feel much more confident in my ability to pluck a bass and would recommend him to anyone at any level of playing ability.

"Well, I can say that when we met 24 years ago, I've never seen anyone playing the bass guitar as good as he did, I still remember him playing that beautif
ul six string bass guitar along with a drummer... I was just trying to catch up with those two ... it was just rehearsal and they didn't need a me as keyboard player , just the slap bass solo was enough for me to step down and watch, I learned a lot just by listening to him. He was a very patient teacher and his musical knowledge was amazing,"

"Jimmy is a great instructor. He takes you seriously no matter what you skill or knowledge level is. When I started with Jimmy I could play guitar but gen
erally only Cowboy chords.

Jim was patient, he analyzed how I played , what I knew and he tailored lessons around what I knew. That way I got the most out of my time and money spent. I can go on and on about Jimmy but for you sake I'll just say that I highly recommend him"

"I never thought I would confidently understand music theory, even after years of practice, self-teaching, college electives, etc... I just never felt like
I "got" it. Brad changed all that. Studying music theory with Brad's guidance and encouragement, I quickly began to feel as though I could "speak" music fluently.

Brad is a phenomenal teacher, and can adapt to almost any situation. If I wasn't understanding something, he never got frustrated, he would find a way to explain it differently until something finally stuck. That's very important I think. I've had too many teachers give up and say, "If you don't get this, you never will." Brad doesn't think like that. To him, "just not getting it" isn't an option. If you want to learn something, he'll find a way to teach it to you."

"Jorge tutored me for a few weeks in music theory and it greatly benefited me. He shows through his examples and explanations that he really understands co
ncepts of music theory and keyboard, as well on his clarinet too. I highly recommend hiring Jorge since he goes over the information at a good pace and nice manor. He will go over whatever you need help on."
