Cello Lessons in Imperial. Amazing Teachers.

I have been teaching cello since 1989.
Cello students of all ages and levels are accepted at my studio. All levels of the cello repertoire from the beginning through the Major Concertos will be taught. Students will be placed in courses according to the level of their current repertoire. The sequence of repertoire in the Suzuki Cello School will be used to place students.

An experienced teacher and performer, Rachel finds creative ways for all her students to learn and grow. Whether beginner, intermediate or advanced she has proven methods to fully engage every student in their learning. Rachel knows the art of cello playing AND is masterful in the art of teaching.

Lessons will focus on developing solid technique through scales and etudes; a thoughtful approach to playing musically; work on solo pieces carefully chosen for maximum enjoyment by each student; improvisation and playing by ear PLUS learning to practice effectively.

Rachel earned her BMus in Cello Performance from Trinity College of Music, London, and her MMus in Cello Performance from Rutgers University, NJ. I am a professional cellist and private educator based in Los Angeles, California. I have seventeen years of cello experience, including a Bachelors in Music from the prestigious University of North Texas. I earned my Masters of Music in Cello Performance at Oklahoma State University, where my research included pedagogy and performance practice.

My former teachers include Shawn Sanders (2006-2010), Nikola Ružević (-2014) and Dr. Meredith Blecha-Wells (-2016). I have performed masterclasses for artists including Phyllis Young, Bion Tsang, Dobrila Berković-Magdalenič, Johnathan Ruck, and Kari Caldwell.

My primary education used Suzuki Method materials along with exercises by Popper and Dotzauer, and later more advanced studies such as Feuillard, Duport, and Piatti. My teaching uses these resources, in addition to personalized exercises, to help my students achieve their musical goals. First and foremost, it is so important for me to get to know you and your musical interests (favorite songs, artists or bands). Once I know a little bit more about you and where your musical interests are, I help you build goals based on what you’d like to accomplish...that could be anything from “just wanting to learn something new and to have fun” to “playing my sister’s favorite song at her wedding in 3 months” or “to join an orchestra and make it my professional goal”. My style of teaching over the last 25 years incorporates technique, reading music, ear training, and improvisation. In addition to the violin, I teach viola, cello and piano/keyboard. The genres I love to teach are classical, rock, pop, jazz, film/tv music, and fiddle!

The cello is a gorgeous instrument that deserves to be played beautifully! We will work on sound production, technique, and we will work to build love and passion for the instrument!!
