I am an music instructor with 27 years of experience. I have a Bachelor's degree in Sacred Music with a major in Voice. I have been playing piano for 35 years with having been an accompanist for choirs and soloists and a pianist at weddings and churches. I am a believer that anyone can learn piano and improve their abilities! I also know that a knowledge of music and music theory go together to improve one's learning ability in any area of his/her life. The student and I would work together. I don't just teach the "how to", I help and encourage taking time at the lesson to learn and understand the music. I am a huge advocate of building the student's skills during the lesson time and using the rest of the week on their own to continue to review the skills they have already acquired. I have a piano recital once a year in the spring
. 2 or 3 months ahead, we decide on a song they like that will show off their acquired skills. I look forward to being your teacher! We will have fun learning!

I am a friendly person and like to put everyone at ease. I try to adapt to each student's learning style. As I have hinted at in my bio, I teach the skills and then we work together on these skills during the lesson. The idea is for the knowledge and skills to come together before the student tries on their own. The student actually learns quicker this way and we repeat lessons much less. The student also desires to learn when they see those goals being attained at a quicker pace. I usually average one lesson book every 2-3 months, depending on the student.

I appreciate Shae's honesty. For she is a very "present" teacher! Explains what the song is supposed too sound like, look like and feel like. Then says "good luck"! Just kidding. Shae is patient and good to work with. Very supportive, even as I plodded along. She knows her stuff!!

As I child I had an early interest in music, dancing and creative things. I took piano lessons and excelled at my chosen instrument, the flute, in band at school. I continued with my music training at Northwestern College in Roseville, Minnesota and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Music Education in 1992. I worked for 11 years in my profession in various settings before I took a break to start my family. My experience includes teaching students in classroom general music, choir, band, piano lessons, and school plays/musicals. I spent six years at a private school (grades K-8), three years at a charter elementary school and 2 years at a public elementary school. Also, since graduating in 1992 I have spent a total of 18 years teaching private lessons both at Hovland Conservatory of Music and in my home. Along the way I
further broadened my background by accompanying church choirs and congregations, playing for weddings, and volunteering to lead children’s music time at church.

I love music of all kinds and have a strong belief that everyone should experience the joy and power of it in his or her life. What can a student/parent expect from lessons with me? I can provide my students with a solid foundation of proper technique. This is so very important because you do not ever want to have to unlearn bad habits. I also include appropriate music theory, ear training and improvising for each level. I purposefully pace the lessons to prevent students from feeling frustrated. Instead, I work to generate excitement about the learning process and keep students motivated by their own progress. Furthermore, I am willing to accommodate a student if they have a special interest in a certain musical genre or a personal goal they are working towards. I encourage, but do not require students to take advantage of recital and performance opportunities that I provide.

I have "warm-up" tracks which you can use in your car or at home and you will notice significant improvement once you start your routine.

I've been a guitar player for a while and have wanted to learn how to sing along with the guitar. Mark has done an excellent job determining where I currently am as a singer and how I can get to where I want to be as a singer. He has started with the basics and explaining to me how you can improve as a singer by making routine out of several exercises. He has done a great job not just explaining what the exercises are, but why they are beneficial to me as a vocalist. After gathering a better sense of my voice, I have started bringing my guitar to lessons and he has helped me immensely to blend my voice with my instrument. Since doing these lessons, I've had the confidence in my voice to start performing at open-mic nights in the Twin Cities and I thank Mark for that! He is wonderful!

I found Mark through TakeLessons a little over a year ago when my dad and I were looking to start learning guitar. I could not have been more pleased with how accommodating Mark was with our schedules and different skill levels. Whether its reviewing what we learned the week prior or taking on something new we are being challenged every lesson. I studied classical piano and theory with Sr. Cecile Amore, jazz theory and mellophone with be-bop saxophonist John Mastroianni, jazz piano with Noreen Grey, and jazz history with the late Bill Finegan- big-band leader and acclaimed arranger for Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller.

I enjoy playing classical music (primarily Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin) tango, and pop songs as well. I have played keyboards and bass guitar professionally and enjoyed some commercial recognition in California when invited to open for a well known Bay Area band ("Foxboro Hot Tubs" a.k.a. "Green Day") at The Roxy and a handful of other west coast venues.

Richard was willing to introduce my 4 year old granddaughter to the instrument and he helped her with the most basic aspects of playing - how to hold it (he adjusted the strap to fit her properly) how to strum and how to use her left hand on the frets, etc. He was clear, concise, encouraging and patient!

Ethan's personality and teaching approach has made the last 3 months of learning guitar very enjoyable and inspiring! His playing and compositions amazed me from the very first lesson.
