I have been teaching violin boht in the schools and privately for over ten years. I take both beginners and intermediate students. I ask that they are able to read well as reading music can be very difficult to a new student.
I use the books String Builder Book 1 for Violin and Strictly Strings Book 1 for Violin, and Music Ace Deluxe which is a fun way to learn their music theory on the computer.
The students will learn their lines and spaces for both the Treble Clef and Bass Clef as well as the note values in their first few lessons as well as the fingering for ope n and closed strings.
I ask that the students practice everyday except the day of their lesson for only 15 minutes as their fingers are not use to it yet. Once they have been playing for awhile then I ask that they start practicing a little longer each day.

About Kathy

I am a patient, enthusiastic teacher in the following areas: piano, violin, cello, drums, music history, and music theory. I have taught vocal and instrumental music in both Catholic and Public schools, and in after-school programs, for 20 years, and have been giving private lessons for 9 years. I

A great passionate violin instructor.
Loquacious, but each moment of verbal conversation has a message that leads to the musical lessons of the day. I really appreciate her knowledge and skill. I am often reminiscent of my violin instructor as a child. Each session leaves me with the zeal to practice hard in eager preparation
for the next.

Kathy is a kind, patient and methodical teacher. She develops your piano skills with a structured program of theory and exercises geared toward constant improvement. She has helped me improve my piano technique throughout our time together. I have been able to play increasingly challenging pieces on a regular basis with her. I look forward to steadily improving my piano skills.

I have recently returned from a week long stay at the Sonatina Piano Camp in Bennington VT and would like to notify all those piano students who may read this review as to the wonderful experience attending this camp can be. The camp takes adult piano students at all piano skill levels from beginner to well accomplished. Students stay in shared rooms (2-4 persons) which includes a piano in every room. Attendance is usually 18- 27 persons. The mansion itself is home to approx. 30 pianos. All meals are provided (and are outstanding) as well as piano classes and 4 lessons with concert pianists or university piano professors. Ample time is provided to practice a performance piece for the end of week performance night. Master classes are given on several evenings for those wishing to perform a work in progress piece for the attendees and the camp owner providing a public lesson.
I have found that the attending student group to be extremely supportive to all other students especially to those experiencing performance anxiety. Repeating attendees (from all over the country) have formed lasting friendships among themselves which have endured for years. Eight week long sessions are given throughout the year. In addition there are summer sessions for school aged youth
and also 4 short week sessions for those wishing to try a sampling of the camp. This past January was my 3rd year attending the camp and I will be returning again next year. My experiences at the camp have been truly unforgettable. More information can be obtained at Sonatina.com

Natalie F was my orchestra director when I attended Oxford High school. Her direction has inspired me to become the best musician I can be as I attend undergraduate school for double bass performance. Natalie is amazing at setting up the experiences to know what it is like to be a musician. Also, she typically is very knowledgeable about current going on’s in the orchestral world. She has on multiple occasions given me or recommended me for professional gigs. I’ve known her long enough now to have seen her growth as a music educator and can tell you that she has a bright future in this regard.

Very detailed oriented. Excellent rapport with students and well connected in the professional and semi-professional music community giving students additional performing opportunities.

I didn’t understand secondary dominants and figured bass, but Emily helped me decipher it. She was very friendly, and provided thorough explanations, and I’m doing much better with my theory classes now thanks to her!
Melissa
I had major performance anxiety surrounding tests and auditions. Emily was always very patient with me and knew the difference between my poor singing and when it was just my anxiety. She never made me feel bad about messing up and throughout the year I became so comfortable with her I only stuttered on really difficult sight singing. I would highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a teacher that is not only great at teaching but also incredibly considerate.

I had Emily as a TA for aural skills for 2 years and she worked with me both online and in person. Throughout my ear training, she was always supportive and patient with me as she helped me through all the material I struggled with. 10/10.

Study with the Concertmaster of the San Antonio Symphony! Prizewinner of international violin competitions, Billboard-charting recording artist. I've taught at Rice University, UT Austin, TCU, and given many masterclasses in the US and abroad. My goal as a teacher is to make myself superfluous. I teach my students to find their own unique voice, not how to copy my style. My former teachers include Cho-Liang Lin, Linda Cerone, among many others.

I love teaching all aspects of violin, and a good teacher will listen to you before having an idea of what to say. If you want to do some deep work on technique, musicality, or mental stamina, we'll get right to it. Proficiency in reading music is a basic requisite for my fee to be worth your time.

About Eric

I'm very fortunate to be able to regularly collaborate with many incredible artists in my international career as a concertmaster, soloist, chamber musician, and recording artist. I've learned from everyone I've ever worked with, and this is especially true when it comes to my private students. As

Cool guy, demanding teacher, great combination. Seriously, this guy knows his stuff. I leave every lesson with something new to work on for the next lesson and I know what I’m getting is some of the best there is. Anyone would be really fortunate to study with Eric, so I’m glad I’m able to every week.
Sharon
Eric is an exceptional violinist and teacher. I have taken lessons with him for about 4 years now, starting with in-home lessons and now online lessons due to covid. In my lessons, Eric really shines in teaching bow hold and nuanced bow strokes, as well as teaching musicality. Prior to Eric, I had taken lessons with about 7 or 8 different teachers, who were good in their own different ways, however had focused primarily on left hand technique. Eric showed me that there is so much more to playing and executing music at a high level. In lessons we discuss musical interpretations, something I had never had to do or think about before, much less vocalize. Eric also pushed me to play genres of music that were outside my comfort zone, so I have grown as a musician by better understanding different genres and not just the ones I am comfortable with. There is also something about having a good teacher/student relationship and interactions, which involve the expectations, pace of learning, and the ways in which a teacher instructs (which encompasses attitude, analogies, etc); Eric has a really good way of describing things, as well as putting enough of a fire under your butt to make you push harder. There is nothing that can replace having a teacher who can actually play and demonstrate, and not just talk about how a technique should be. Eric can PLAY. And in lessons, his ears are so good and quick they can hear and pick up on things like you wouldn’t believe, EVEN over online lessons! I also love that I was able to learn very high level etudes, like Paganini caprices, and he really knows them and can play them, so you have confidence in the way you approach the music and techniques. Whoever takes lessons with Eric is very lucky because his knowledge isn’t just walking around with your every day violin teachers, it’s really special.
Samuel I.
Eric has really been an inspiration to me in both violin playing and as a person! He has paved the way to me becoming the violinist I am today! I am forever in debt of every opportunity and guidance Mr. Gratz has given, and I would reccomend to everyone, because he is a truly special teacher with many different ways and strategies of approaching your needs as a violinist!

"Great violin instructor!

I am a college student at Azusa Pacific University, and Kan was suggested to me by one of her colleagues. At the time, I had just declared a music minor and was preparing to audition for my school's Symphony Orchestra. In my first lesson with her, I could tell that she knew exactly what my level of violin playing and experience was and started building me up from there (when I began lessons with Kan, I had been playing violin for about 8 years). Thanks to Kan's instruction, I was able to achieve my goal of getting into my school's Symphony Orchestra! Everyone I know has definitely seen growth and improvement in my playing, including myself. Kan is very friendly, caring, and always wants to see her students improve! Even after she received her Master's degree at APU, she continued to come to APU to give me a lesson!"
