I have been teaching piano to students of all ages for the past 26 years. I studied piano at St. Bonaventure University under Laura Peterson. I have accompanied many in talent shows, and competitions. I presently play the piano at our church.
I have taught students that have gone on to higher learning in piano. Some of my students have competed in nationwide festivals and placed well. They have entered local and statewide contests. They placed well in their categories.
I believe that each student should have goals for their talent. I want to work with the student's goal to achieve their very best. I believe each student is a unique individual who will become a performer according to the practice that they put into it
I am looking for students who want to have fun while learning to play the piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
Ea
ch beginning student will receive a curriculum that fits them best. I use a variety of curriculum. If the student already has begun in a curriculum we can continue to use that one if it fits their goals appropriately.
Each student will learn how to play the piano and the theory behind the music. We will do games to reinforce the lesson. We also learn scales and arpeggios and chords and how they fit together.
I expect at least 5 days of practice to progress consistently at their ability level. They will keep track of practice in an online journal.
Usually if the student follows the recipe of consistent practice they should finish each year's curriculum as scheduled. I include motivational activities we do as a group once a unit is finished. Some students finish before one year is up and are able to start the next level which is very exciting for them.
I encourage them to play for variety shows, fairs, church and other public places to help them with performance .
Its great to see their faces shine and the confidence they show once the student connects with the piano and learns their first song.
The other exciting thing I love to see is when a student comes to a difficult challenge and we break it down so they can actually learn the difficulty and experience success!!!
Wow what a motivation!!!
The student then learns that they can get over hurdles not only in piano but in life too.

We learn to read the notes, relate sound and express ourselves through the beauty playing the piano.
I am willing to use a variety of styles to help students learn to play the piano such as classical, rock , pop, hymn, jazz and more through the variety of method books such as Alfred, Bastien, Faber and Faber, and more.

I have taught Autistic children ages 8-15 who have a high recommendation. I also have taught a Down Syndrome girl.

I have experience teaching both beginning and intermediate piano and beginning voice. I enjoy working with students of all ages and helping them develop as musicians. I studied private piano into my high school years and studied organ and voice in college where I was a vocal soloist. I attended Concordia College, Ann Arbor, Mi and received my BA in Music Education from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa

I have accompanied both Middle School and High School Choirs and instrumentalists, played organ and directed church choirs. I currently am a substitute organist. I enjoy working with students one on one. I recently moved to La Porte so took a break from teaching for a few months but a

I especially love playing keyboard because of its expressive nature, the soft and loud, the sweetly and the contemplative. It brings me pleasure especially when a challenging piece has been mastered.

I attempt to adapt lessons so each student can be successful. A variety of curriculum is used based on student's needs and the basic curriculum is supplemented with additional material to reinforce the lessons being taught. Each piano lesson begins with reviewing material from the previous lesson and then learning new pieces, including technique and theory as appropriate to the music. Practicing is an essential part of the learning process. Students are given practical ideas on how to make practicing more effective and enjoyable.

As you learn the notes, it becomes increasingly critical to understand the theory behind them. My instrumental lessons will often include basic theory fundamentals such as scales, major and minor triads, etc., but if you are interested in specific theory tutoring, I can help out with that as well. I strongly feel each student needs lesson goals tailored to what he or she wants to take away from music. Getting ready for a college performance degree, making it to state solo contest, surviving band music, or simply discovering the huge scope of music available to us these days are each worthy goals, but require different preparation. My education includes a bachelor's and master's degree in trumpet performance from Lawrence University and UW-Milwaukee, respectively. I just moved to the South Bend area in 2016 from Portland, OR, and have since started a new studio that has room for

My daughter planned to join band at her high school for her junior year. She had not taken lessons in the past and we were concerned that she would be too far behind the other teens, and private lessons in the area were at inconvenient times.
Takelessons was the perfect solution for us. James was absolutely excellent as an instructor. He was patient, fun, talented, and inspiring. My daughter had never played trumpet before and in just 2 months she is able to play with the band and she is doing phenomenal! I highly recommend James!

Dr. Carl S. will be teaching at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical replacement beginning August 2017. His duties include graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class. Prior to working at OSU, Carl was Instructor of Jazz and Saxophone at South Dakota State University from 2014-2017. While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, assisting with the KU Jazz Festival, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen,Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. Of course it is more enjoyable if you can have lessons in person. But with modern technology, live online lessons come in a close second. I've been teaching for 40 years and I've been doing online lessons for about 7 years. I'm located in West Hills, which is a suburb of Los Angeles. If you are not local, using skype with a webcam works out surprisingly well. I have students in Sydney, London, Hong Kong and many cities throughout the US.

*** Use a Piano or a Keyboard for Practicing ***
I am not fussy if you use a keyboard but it needs to be a "weighted action" keyboard, so that it feels similar to a real piano. Ideally, you should also have a pedal and a stand if you are using an electronic keyboard.

*** Unconventional Approach ***
Each student is taught with a customized approach. You get to tell me what areas you want to focus on. Sometimes there may be a block or something that is a weakness that you need to bolster. Sometimes it is a narrow niche within music that you want to give your attention to. One way that I'm unconventional is that I actually have found that it is NOT better if you practice every day. I recommend that you build in about three days of rest per week. Just like people who work out at the gym learn that the off days are when the muscles regenerate, the same is true for your brain. This allows your subconscious mind to do its job and your progress will actually be faster, not slower. Another example of my unique approach is how I treat beginners. Even though you may not yet read music very well or at all, it doesn't mean that you can't start working concurrently on a more advanced piece. This is because READING notation is a comparatively slow process, but why should we restrict your ability to play something that you love to your rate of reading music? Usually, our FINGER TECHNIQUE develops much faster than our READING so I'm happy to guide you on one or two more difficult pieces and help spoon-feed it to you, bit by bit, "by rote."

I feel grateful that my own training included top teachers of both the “German School” and “Russian School” of piano technique. Generally, the German School teaches how to play with close-to-the-key hand placement preparation and fingering efficiency, and is known for great speed and accuracy. The Russian School teaches how to play with gravity and relaxation and is known for beautiful tone production. Each approach has its strengths and weaknesses. In my own playing and teaching, I have incorporated the good aspects of each and have discarded the bad. The result is a blueprint for biomechanical efficiency and beautiful sound, making it the best of both worlds. Please see the photo of the "piano lineage chart."

Howard is very caring and detailed oriented. He really knows how to inspire and encourage children to learn piano. He makes it challenging and fun!

Howard's approach is patient while at the same time he actually leads my son forward - not just listening to what he practiced that week. Howard does not make the weekly lesson a "test" but rather a session to work together and my son enjoys the lessons instead of worrying if he prepared enough.

We moved from Los Angeles so we chose to transition from lessons in Howard's house to weekly lessons online - it continues to work beautifully.

Howard can accommodate any style of student - I know because I took lessons from Howard myself until my work built up too much to continue.

I recommend Howard without any reservation.

Folks, I'm excited to write this review for a true master in piano pedagogy and so many other skills! Howard is worthy of the title! In all my years that I have taken lessons from teacher at universities and privately, I've never come across someone with the genius and in-depth philosophy that Howard has. You may think this may be some fluff to help a guy out but my words will still not be enough to quantify the abilities of this man! I went from having severe arthritis in my wrists from playing with terrible technique to never having problems again and experiencing a huge leap in my playing abilities!

If you want to experience a paradigm shift in your playing, get ready to open yourself to a new way of thinking and playing that will lift you up! If your attitude to learn matches Howard's abilities to teach you will not believe the progress you will make. Its true what they say, when you are ready the master will come! I hope you are ready because Howard is the real deal!!!

My son Jean-David, who was then 10 years old, took lessons with Anna during six months (the duration of our stay in South Bend) and he had much pleasure to follow these lessons and practise the piano every day. Anna made him play various styles of music and she corrected him well. Even if Jean-David knew only a few words in English (we are Swiss and he was used to speak French), he could understand what she explained. Anna had expactations, but she was also encouraging and friendly. I recommend her warmly.

I'm learning a musical instrument for the first time ever, at the young age of 43! I love working with Anna, she has made this a wonderful experience for me. Very informative, learning to read music and positioning my hands correctly. I have been taking lessons with Anna for 3.5 months now, she gives me just enough push out of my comfort zone to expand my piano learning.
