I teach children starting at 7 years old, all the way to adults. I teach each player proper playing technique that can be used for classical playing, fiddle-playing and pop music. I also teach music theory and sheet reading alongside violin technique. I tailor each lesson to the students wants and needs.

I have been playing violin for 20 years and have been trained in classical and Fiddle style playing. I also have a full knowledge of Music Theory and how to read sheet music. I believe that learning should be fun and rewarding.

Maya joined the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in 2007. After receiving her Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School in 2001, she became a member of the Honolulu Symphony. In Hawaii, she recorded with the prestigious Hawaiian singer Keali’i Reichel on his album Ke’alaokamaile, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005.

A native of Japan, Maya received Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Tokyo University of the Arts. She attended seminars in Japan and England with the Amadeus Quartet and performed in both countries as a member of the Sunrise String Quartet.

In the United States, Shiraishi studied with Masao Kawasaki on scholarships at the Juilliard School, where she received a master’s degree in 2001. She has also studied with Garrett Fischbach from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Yoko Takebe from the New York Philharmonic. Whether young or old, raw beginner or experienced player, I am happy to teach you! I am keenly aware to the needs of my students and adjust my teaching based on each individual's musical interests and goals. I have experience preparing grade-school aged students for NYSSMA solo festivals.

I teach violin at the New School for Leadership and the Arts, mostly to novice players, and I have experience teaching violin to children of all ages.

My primary instrument is guitar, which I've played for about 25 years in many different bands, styles, and genres. I studied music and classical guitar at University of Central Florida, and during that time I also helped teach violin to a class of third graders. I'm not a pro violinist, but I have plenty of experience working with novice players, helping them develop proper technique, sight reading, ear training, and other skills needed to advance to the next level.
