I am from a musical and visual arts family from Brazil and my background ranges from classical, pop, rock and a jazz solo and group arrangements. David enjoys teaching students from all different backgrounds and levels of proficiency. Whether you are just starting out or a virtuoso shredder in the making, he is happy to teach you! Over all, he is fairly laid back, as long as you practice. He usually combines work with reading off of the treble clef (what he likens to "eating your vegetables." You may not want to do it, but it will make you a healthier musician!) with learning more popular songs (or songs the student says they would like to learn) through tablature and chord charts, depending on the style of the song.
David is also very pro music theory. He usually incorporates music theory into the curriculum in conjunction with the material already being discussed. He is also very knowledgeable about composition/songwriting, and if the student is interested in learning more about this area, he is happy to share what he knows!
David is a successful singer/songwriter/guitarist out of Fairfax, VA. He has a bachelor's degree in Music with a concentration in composition from Salisbury University, where he also studied jazz and classical guitar . In the 25 years he has been performing (20 of those professionally) and playing guitar, he has released 4 CDs and written over 200 original songs. He has opened for major national acts like Journey, Maroon 5, Toby Keith, My Chemical Romance, The Used, Thrice, Story of the Year, The Bouncing Souls, Eric Hutchinson, Virginia Coalition and Graham Colton. In the process, he has performed at such notable venues as FedEx Field, Nationals Park, Jiffy Lube Live/Nissan Pavilion, the 9:30 Club, The Hamilton and Rams Head Live.
As a teacher, David has taught in numerous locations in the Maryland area for the last 23 years. H
is students generally range anywhere from 4-70+ years old and come from a wide range of backgrounds and levels of proficiency, from basic beginners to advanced. Some of his students have also gone on to pursue careers in music, others have just learned as a hobby, and some have been somewhere in between the two. All are welcome!

I had to switch the lesson to in-home roughly 3 hours before the scheduled lesson. David was great and accommodating. He gave me a crash course on scales, which I didn't know anything about, and explained them so that I actually started to understand.

My first lesson with David was excellent! He is very patient and knowledgeable. I now have extremely high expectations for learning to play the guitar. I highly recommend him. He gave me a thorough explanation about how guitars are made made, the parts, we tuned the guitar and I am ready to groove!

I am very well rounded in all styles of music such as, Rock, Jazz, Gospel, Christian, Latin, Marching, Classical, Blues and the list goes on. I am a Emmy Nominated drummer for my outstanding role in the 2015 Stage Musical "Oh Gospel" The Evolution of Gospel Music. My drumming & percussion career has launch me into one of the most sought after instructors & drummers of our time. *** Lesson Details *** My students will quickly learn the basics of drumming, including: stick control, technique, rhythms, drum fills, and licks. It does not matter if you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced drummer. The same time and effort will be exercised. We will have a fun and meaningful time playing, both by ear and by reading music. These lessons will really be hands on using teaching methods such as music books, DVD’s, and playing of my own. Students will have a great time also studying music theory, learning how to assemble the drum set, learning the parts of the drums, how to tune the drums, and how to accompany other musical instruments. Louis J. has over 20 years of experience playing and teaching piano. He has traveled across the states performing and opening for various artists such as Jonathan Butler and Donnie McClurklin. Mr. J. studied classical piano with Patricia King and studied jazz piano with Harry Appleman at Montgomery College. He received his B.S. degree from High Point University. While in college, he studied music theory and music composition. His musical influences range from Mozart to Oscar Peterson. Although his primary instrument is piano, he also plays guitar, bass, drums, and the organ. He currently serves as the Director of Music at a local church in Alexandria, Va. Mr. J. performs regularly throughout the DC metro area as a studio session musician, music director, and accompanist.

DeTrece "Dee" Lavender is a native of Miami, Florida. When her family moved to Sarasota, she was afforded the opportunity to study music and the performing arts as a student of the Westcoast School/Henry L. Porter School of Music. It was then that Dee began to understand the power of the creative arts as an effective form of emotional expression and release. By middle school, DeTrece began fine tuning her natural talents by studying classical voice which earned her several starring roles in the Sarasota Youth Opera, The Aslo Theater and the Players Theater. She is also a proud former member of the Westcoast Black Theater Troop in Sarasota, FL. Under the caring leadership of these opportunities, she was able to combine musical and life experiences in order to offer a more well rounded educational and musical experience for her students.
She was awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where she received a dual Bachelor of Music degree in Music Therapy and Vocal Performance (Class of 2003). It was through her service as a music therapist, Millieu (residential) counselor and music teacher in the Boston City Public Schools/Greater Boston Metropolitan Area, that she began to feel the call toward a greater understanding of the gravity and role of the socio-emotional needs of students (and their families/villages) in urban settings. This call brought her to Baltimore, MD where she enrolled in the Pastoral Counseling Masters of Science program at Loyola University. In addition to her studies, she currently teaches Elementary and Middle School choir/ Musicianship teacher in the Baltimore City Public Schools through the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's OrchKids Program. She also serves as Minister Of Music and Arts at two local churches.
I had such an amazing experience training with Detrece! She always has such sweet positive energy. I was so happy that with me being more of an advanced singer she was able to teach me about my voice and tips that I never knew! I am a former instrumental music teacher in the Catholic school system. I have been teaching in some way, shape or form for the past 20 years. My methods of teaching vary depending on the student and what they need to succeed. I make myself available between lessons via text, phone and email for questions regarding the lesson. Music theory is an essential part of music making, whether one is reading sheet music or learning by ear. Through two degrees in music (my BA in music from the Oberlin Conservatory and MM in music from the Peabody Conservatory), I have taken over 40 credits of advanced music theory classes. My teaching caters to all levels, and is specialized to fit each student.
New York-born Flutist Amanda is a versatile performer active as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician. Amanda was most recently named the first place winner of the National Society of Arts and Letters Woodwind Competition in Washington, DC. She has also received first place awards in the Best Mozart Performance category of the global Great Composer Competition Series, the 2014 Central Ohio Flute Association Young Artist Competition, the 2013 Rochester Flute Association Emerging Artist Competition, the 2012 Donald E. Webster Scholarship Competition, and the 2012 Stefan Scholarship Competition. In 2015, she was invited to participate in the Third International Maxence Larrieu Flute Competition, taking place in Nice, France, and was one of only three flutists invited from the United States. Amanda is currently a substitute flutist wit
h the Canton and Firelands Symphonies, and appeared as a guest principal with the Canton Symphony for their March 2018 Masterworks Concert. During her studies at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, she was principal of the Oberlin Orchestra, and performed in the orchestra at Chicago Symphony Center as a part of their 150th-Anniversary tour. At Oberlin, Amanda appeared frequently as an ensemble-member for faculty concerto recordings. She has appeared in the Schikele Bassoon Concerto and the Augusta Reed Thomas Bassoon Concerto released on the Oberlin and Naxos labels on the album Full Moon in the City. She has also appeared in recordings of the Carter Flute Concerto and the Trigos Guitar Concerto No. 1 (forthcoming releases). In addition to her orchestral opportunities at Oberlin, Amanda has attended the Pierre Monteux School and Festival, the Miami Summer Music Festival, and the Bach Institute at Emmanuel Music. To supplement her love for performing, Amanda has also been active in the field of Arts Administration. Co-founder of the Oberlin Flute Association, Amanda spent two years bringing prominent flute artists to Oberlin. This included advertising in the Cleveland area, managing a strict budget, and organizing all details of the artists’ visits. She also worked at the Oberlin Concert Productions office as assistant director and program editor, and was administrative assistant with Oberlin Conservatory Summer Programs. She is currently a staff member in the Peabody Career Services office, providing professional development support for students at Peabody. She has recently graduated from Oberlin College and Conservatory, where she received a Bachelor of Music in flute performance and a Bachelor of Arts in biology as a part of the college’s double-degree program. She is currently pursuing a Master of Music at the Peabody Conservatory, under the guidance of Marina Piccinini.
She encourages, she finds analogies to explain, she is more patient with me then I am with myself. She also explains the terms, gives tips on how to read the notes. She is able to identify the mistakes and give the right advice on how to improve. Her advice on how to practice made all the difference for me. I started with a giant cookie bite sized embouchure and within a few lessons I have managed to make it smaller thanks to her instructions. There is hope for me afterall.

Amanda is an outstanding teacher. She inspires and challenges me to play pieces I did not think I could play. She is able to take difficult passages and break them down step my step so I can learn how to play them properly. I am sure I would not be playing as I am now, if it weren’t for Amanda’s skilled teaching. She is also friendly, makes the lessons interesting and fun and is very professional.
