Alexandra is everything you could ever want in a first-rate teacher: she is inspiring, devoted, nurturing, exciting, knowledgeable, a fierce advocate for her students - the list goes on and on. However, what makes Alexandra truly remarkable is her almost magical ability to instantly spark intrinsic motivation - and a love of music - in all of her students. If you are looking to learn from a truly life-changing teacher, look no further than Alexandra Perdew-Bhatt.

Alexandra has met all my expectations. She is very patient. I feel like we are moving along at a good pace. I had zero musical experience and after only 3 lessons can read basic sheet music and actually have music come out of the piano!! I am enjoying the whole process.

So far so good. First meeting jitters are over. Kevin has a nice calm about him which makes it easy to listen. I've got some homework and looking forward to my next lesson.

Kevin is wonderful to work with. Very knowledgeable, very calm, pleasant personality. He wanted to know first what I wanted to do, but was prepared to start me with the basics - scales - which is where I want to be proficient, so that I can master the instrument. I have no doubt that I can do that with Kevin. Just spent a few minutes practicing my C-major scale using the L-R-R-L-L method. Works great! I just checked email and he'd sent me the printouts he promised. Looking forward to next week!

How to Change the Key of a Song With and Without a Computer

What Does it Mean to Change a Key? To change a song’s “key” means to shift the whole musical system to a higher or lower position. This process is called “transposition.” Performers often need transpose a song to better fit their voices. That way, a performer with a naturally lower singing voice (like myself) will be able to more comfortably sing a song that was originally written for someone with a naturally higher voice. Or vice versa.  For singers, transposition feels fairly …

Music Student Face-Off: Memorizers vs. Readers | Which is Better?

As you learn songs and work through your music books, do you memorize the notes? Or do you read along every time you play? In this post, music teacher Vanessa G. discusses the pros and cons to the approaches...   Imagine your teacher gives you a piece of music to study. What's your process? Do you listen to a recording, memorizing the melody and the stylistic aspects before you begin, and then as you play? Or would you sit down and sight read the notes, and perfect it from that star …

Why You Should Learn (At Least a Little) Music Theory

One of the most common weaknesses for amateur musicians is a lack of music theory knowledge. Many people assume that learning theory is difficult (it isn’t) that it has no practical purpose (it does), or even that it will actively make them worse at making music (quite the opposite). I’m here to convince you that learning a little about how music works is one of the most important skills you can develop and should absolutely be part of your daily practice routine. Here are five reasons w …
