I am a NYS certified Music teacher who has been teaching in the school system for over 20 years.

I hold both my BM and MA degree in Music Education, and Jazz guitar was my major instrument in college. My focus is to teach techniques, skills and concepts for life-long learning.

I am currently available to teach Guitar, Music Theory and Beginner Piano.

Aside from teaching private guitar and piano lessons and teaching General music and Chorus in school, I perform and accompany singers as a guitarist in churches on Long Island.

For your added security, I've been VIRTUS trained with the Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre and fingerprinted with the NYS Education department.

My system of guitar training includes:

* Right hand and Left hand technical exercises geared towards developing coordination and confidence;

work in music reading of standard music notation and TAB;

* Fretboard navigation, pick-control and fingerstyle techniques.

* Song repertoire knowledge and memorization

*Solo guitar interpretation of popular songs as well as accompaniment styles appropriate for backing your or another's voice;
*Ear-training and Music theory is incorporated into each lesson.

NYSSMA preparation is available for both Classical and Jazz auditions.

Piano lessons are available with concentration in proper hand mechanics and technique, theory, ear-training and music reading. NYSSMA preparation up through level 4 is available.

*** Lesson Details ***
My guitar lessons follow a structured format. I begin with technical exercises for both the picking/strumming hand and the fretting hand, leading to good sound production. As students learn to achieve well-balanced tones, they learn to apply that to the written page using standard music notation and the TAB system. From single notes, students learn to build harmony, (chords), from 2 notes, to 3, and thereafter, 4. Song repertoire is built from a variety of sources including published method books. Memorization of song repertoire is stressed.

After the student has learned the notes and scales in the first position as well as the associated chords, he/she can learn songs of his/her choosing from the Folk, Pop, Classical and Jazz repertoire that is appropriate to his/her current level.

Piano method books used include the Dozen-A-Day and Hanon technique exercises as well as the Schaum and Michael Aaron method book series'.

NYSSMA training/coaching is available for both piano and guitar with suitable training beginning a least a year before the NYSSMA audition is to take place.

The Guitar student should have a good quality guitar, (steel strings, nylon strings, or steel-string electric) professionally set-up with light-gauged strings (for the beginners), a strap, a music stand, and time and space in the home in order to encourage a daily routine of practice.

The Piano student should have daily access to a piano or keyboard instrument with weighted keys in order to be able to practice lesson material daily.

For young students, a practice chart is given where a student is to mark his/her practice time in order for progress to be made.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a dedicated room in my home that is set up for private practice and teaching. It has an electronic piano, folding chairs, a music stand and guitar amplifiers and cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring an acoustic guitar with me to all out-going lessons so that I can play along with the student and demonstrate techniques as necessary. I bring extra blank sheets of music writing paper, fret board diagrams, and study sheets, as well as extra copies of the books I use most frequently. I can purchase books/materials for the student, with the student's or parent/guardian's reimbursement, or the student may purchase materials on their own.

My whole method book starts and ends with listening and ear training and rhythmic work and playing. In the end, if you really are serious, you need to know ALL the nuts and bolts.
Music theory is essential if you want to take it to a high level. But it's not hard.

Why? You see, when you were a kid, you talked before you could read and write, correct? So we learn the fun stuff, listening and playing first and then you easily grasp the theory of music. And we make sure you get it all so you are a well-rounded pro.

Oh, and you will have had so much fun that you will actually still be studying music instead of having quit because you were bombarded with paper at too young an age!

The English language has 26 letters. Music has 5 lines and 4 spaces. Piece of cake!

All that said, reading musical notes is like your alphabet.
When was the last time you had to ponder the alphabet when you wanted to speak? Once you know the alphabet, you just forget it and move on, to words, stories and communication.
Music is a language as well.

Everybody loves music. How will you find yours? It’s different for everyone.
Maybe you want to sing like that great pop singer you love, or play keyboard. Some people write songs. In all cases, the keyboard helps you to understand all about music.

Bach used to improvise all the time. Why shouldn't you?

SONGWRITERS:
If you write songs, just bring in an idea and we will record it. We set a tempo and a key, and get your basic groove looped, all in about two minutes. Then we lay down the chords and a bass part and you sing a reference vocal. You can easily lay out a song in a one-hour session. Then it is easy to see how to produce it. It is amazing to go home with a recording of your song that did not exist in the world until you gave it a voice!

Along the way, you become a better writer, singer and/or keyboard player. You will learn to play by ear. And have a LOT of fun. You can do this online too.

ONLINE SESSIONS
You create a rough sketch and we track it, with your input.
We can help you to set up your own songwriter studio as well. If you get Logic software at your end, you can put on phones and cut a vocal with me producing you.

Playing by Ear
Pretty much everyone can play by ear. So we help you to find your own voice, reach your musical goals and to create and perform music as a real and beautiful part of your life.

Making music should not be a boring job. Rather, it should be something you can't wait to do. A way to get in touch with the rest of the universe. You will also learn to read and write, but it won't get in the way of your music.

Since a very young age I have loved to improvise and to create music. It is very satisfying to pass this on to others who are full of music inside but may not know how to get it out. If you wish that you or your child could get some help creating your own music as well as playing the great music already written, perhaps we should be talking.

I am from Canada, and I have been a professional musician since 1970. I studied music performance in school, piano with the Royal Conservatory of Toronto and Music Education at Queens University. I have toured with national acts, produced dozens of recordings of all kinds and played, arranged and conducted music on cruise ships all over the world.

Music is my life. Bringing other people's skills to a higher level is what I do best.

Music should be fun. Period.

My only real job is to make sure you have fun and want to learn more. Then you will do the rest. you will astonish yourself and everyone around you!

In a traditional music education, reading the works of others is the focus, with no encouragement to improvise or to play by ear.

In our community, there is a prestigious, private college prep school that charges just under $80 per hour for traditional private music lessons. If you take away the music, most cannot play a note.

My method is every bit the equal of that school for those who are drawn to express themselves playing by ear. You will still learn all the core skills needed to be a well-rounded musician.

Music study helps people young and old to overcome shyness and build confidence. It empowers them as they refine their special talents.

We will always have a lot of fun, but there is a lot to do, so we need to be efficient. My teaching method is a combination of the best methods I have found. It is backed up with the same solid principles that I received when I was a student myself. If you choose to continue and pursue a classical education at a high level, you will be well-prepared.

Please note:
You are most welcome to start with 30 minute sessions to see if we are a good fit. 30 min lessons are offered for this purpose and also for very young children with short attention spans. For any student, wishing to make progress, lessons will eventually need to be an hour or 45 minutes at minimum in order to reach your goals.

Attendance
While fun is our main goal, we need results and I am an old-school stickler for results.

Weekly sessions are the only way to get measurable results, and the only way I teach. Two absences a month is noted by colleges as a clear path to dropping out. That is what bi-weekly sessions will do.

Though you'll receive serious critiques from me, I always uplift and encourage. Positive energy is the ticket.

My Method:
Listen, Sing, Clap, Play, Read and Write. With these tools you can look deeper into the elements that make up music. Folk, jazz, pop, rock or classical; all Western music is derived from the same principles. We will study ear training from a wonderful ear training book by a famous guitarist. It'™s simple: you learn all the theory so you will be at the top of your game, but always have fun doing it.
For notation, we will use The Semper Note Speller.
For scales, we have the famous Brown Scale Book.

Technology
We use recording as a tool to help you hear how you sound and we always encourage you to express yourself with improvisation. In many cases, you will have tracks to practice with. We also use apps for your phone that really help. A guitar tuner to nail down vocal pitch, as well as a metronome app that is with you wherever you go. If you have a minute anywhere you can get in some good practice time. So we truly have the best of all worlds: playing from music and learning to play by ear! If you stick with it and do the work, the end result will be that you can always just sit down and play, whether or not you have any music in front of you!

On our first lesson we will do a duet jam session together and you will not believe how great you sound!

The Big Picture
In the old days, a tiny percentage of students would become a concert pianist.

Today, there are a multitude of other ways to become involved with music. Whether you are looking at music as a profession or as a hobby, we let parents know of the many choices available so that they can make good decisions, for themselves and for their children.

Having fun as you improve is a big priority. I also teach songwriting, singing, music recording and performance, as well as piano.

Remember:
A piano should be an irresistible invitation, not an obstacle.

Troy studio: A digital keyboard in a professional recording control-room environment at our media production studio. The studio is near Big Beaver and Stephenson Hwy.

Home studio: An acoustic piano and recording studio environment at my home in Franklin/Beverly Hills.

Your Instrument
If you are taking any kind of music lesson, we recommend a tuned piano or digital keyboard, preferably with at least 76 full-sized keys.

We have helped many people to find the right piano.
If you like, I can suggest several different models of keyboard that I have researched and of which I approve. They range from an inexpensive but effective starter keyboard for ear training and just plain fun to an 88 note weighted keyboard for more expressive practice.

Within the first lesson he gave me excellent, concrete tips that I could try and that had visible results even in my every-day conversations. I am a very laid back person however I'll make sure you get things done! It doesn't matter what you'd like to do with your music I can help you get there and reach your goals! I use two different curricula for piano: Alfred Piano Book Series and Faber Piano Book Series. Also to help motivate I let kids bring in a song or two they would like to play maybe from a movie or a pop song (it also depends on their level). For voice I usually let you bring in books you already have or if you don't have any I'll choose some based on what you'd like to learn in voice whether it be classical, broadway, jazz etc.

Lisa is very outgoing and entertaining. She is encouraging Ali to be braver/less timid when singing and acting...this is exactly what Ali needs. I appreciate Lisa's positive attitude. I would like to split each session into 30 minutes acting and 30 minutes singing. I think both disciplines could reinforce the other. If that seems to short maybe we can move to 1.5 hours.

Patrick is the Organ teacher I should have had when I was a kid. Thankfully, I found him in this lifetime!
I'm a decent piano player who has lacked confidence in my play and music skills. I have just started to play Pipe Organ at my church and i needed someone's help.

Patrick's unlocking knowledge that I didn't realize was in my head and adding to it, the missing pieces in a way that no teacher has ever been able to do before (and I've had more than a handful of instructors for music). I have a degree in Music too.

He is Extremely patient and warm with a great sense of humor and compassion for any person over the age of 5. ( I believe he can teach around that age too)

Lessons are very well organized with just the right amount of information given out in any one sitting. He takes into account the goals and background of each client he works with and customizes what the focus will be. For me, I needed a immediate answer. I am not so patient. My lesson time is a slightly different than others. lol Sorry Patrick.

Ed has a pleasant easy going personality. I've had a couple of teachers who were great players, but lousy teachers. I quit my last teacher because he was completely unprepared and what we did had nothing to do with what we did the previous lesson that I had spent so much time practicing. I got the feeling he thought he was so good he could just wing it. Wrong. I've only had one lesson with Ed, but he seems well prepared and he has his program structured so the student can learn in a progressive manor.

My name is Zach L. I am a professional musician in the Miami area. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Guitar Performance from the University of Miami. I am a multiple Downbeat-award-winning guitarist and have been drumming for the past 13 years. I have headlined multiple international tours and received both the Duncan Nelson Scholarship and the Davidson Scholarship at the University of Miami. Students' lessons are tailored to their individual needs. I don't teach out of a book (though I do use books to supplement
material when helpful), so students will only be learning what *they* need to be learning next, based on their unique blend of skill, experience, and curiosity. With that in mind, here are some topics on which we tend to focus.

Guitar Lessons:
-Proper Technique. (How to hold a pick. Proper ways to apply pressure to the strings with the left hand. Tension-free technique to prevent injury and strain.)
-Chord Formations. (Bar chords, Power chords, Open chords, Triads and inversions, CAGED system chords, Seventh chords, Advanced jazz voicing, Chords in alternate tuning.)
-Scales/Arpeggios. (Proper fingering to build technical skill. Three note per string scale forms. Conventional scale forms. Cross-fretboard patterns. Seeing arpeggios from different scale degrees. Pattern manipulation.)
-Reading Music. (One position reading. Multi-position reading. Sight reading practice. Understanding rhythmic variation. Ledger line studies. Dollahon 10th position method for sight reading.)

Zach is an excellent teacher! He has such a thorough understanding of music, and plenty of experience teaching it. Taking lessons with him are both super fun and super informative. He's got a knack for making complex things seem simple and is really easy to work with. I highly recommend taking lessons with Zach for anyone wanting to take their playing to the next level.

About Brian
My musical interest began as early as I could remember. One of the most comforting and interesting things to do as a child was play with musical instruments like the toy keyboards, xylophones or drums, and of course singing! I found a voice, a magical place, where I could be myself and express deeper feelings than were made possible by talking.

After hearing a string quartet, the violin called to me in every millisecond of sound, I heard it as if it were me playing. I began lessons at age five, and here I am today! Still finding the mystical powers in every practice and teaching session. Between then and now, I managed to accomplish some musical dreams of mine.

At age fourteen, I performed a solo with the Long Bay Youth Symphony Orchestra. I went to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts for the second half of my high
school, and for most of my undergraduate studies. There, I grew unmeasurably and will forever be grateful to Kevin Lawrence, my violin professor at UNC School of the Arts. The value and sacred quality of studying music on that level continues to deepen in significance for me as time goes on.

As a performer I am grateful to have worked closely with some wonderful conductors and been invited to serve as concertmaster in ensembles such as, Symphony Orchestra of the Americas, Garden State Philharmonic, Taghkanic Chorale, Litha Symphony and Utopia Opera. Others I have played with include, Wordless Music Orchestra, Clarion Society, Orchestra Modern, Empire Chamber Orchestra, Winston Salem Symphony, Fayetteville Philharmonic, and Long Bay Symphony.

I spent most of my initial studies under the wing of Weston Sprott; Principal trombonist of the Metropolitan Opera. Now, I am a full scholarship graduating student of the Manhattan School of Music and a full time member of the 6 time Grammy winning Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble led by maestro Arturo O' Farill. Amazing teacher, has incredible talent at teaching and playing music. I know that he will be able to help me to be the best musician I can be. He did all the right techniques to get good and it shows in his playing. Overall great teacher and a great guy, really cares about the growth of the student.

I can help you to better understand music theory through explanations that make sense to you. Everything you want to know will be introduced to you at your own pace even if you don't have a clear idea of what theory concepts you'd like to know. I have taken quite a few theory classes including the more advanced subjects like form and analysis and counterpoint, even some composition and arrangement independent studies. Theory can seem esoteric to some and I myself even thought so at first, but through practice and experience I have learned to appreciate it. Let's learn in a way that works for you!

My name is Brandi and I am ready to become your music teacher! Playing the guitar has been my passion for 12 years and counting. I took talented music classes throughout my high school years and decided that I wanted to pursue music as a profession. I attended Southeastern Louisiana University for music performance and focused on the classical guitar as my primary instrument. I have played many gigs ranging from open mic nights, accompanying a choir, classical guitar ensembles consisting of up to 12 people, and my solo recitals. I also play the electric guitar and the ukulele, with recently expanding interests for electronic music and synthesis.
