Music Theory is essential for every well-rounded musician. A musician should know why something sounds good. Simple theory includes note names, reading music, melody, and rhythm. Complex theory includes how extended chord structures relate to each other, Serialism, and harmonization.
Vince first encountered music theory when he began playing trumpet and reading music. He learned the basics; notes, scales, triads, key signatures, and time signatures. Later (especially when he first studied guitar and piano), Vince studied intervals, exotic scales, and chord progressions. At college and graduate school, he formally studied advanced music theory as applied to tonal harmony, twentieth century music, and jazz.
Often, theories are built upon other theories and thus support each other. Vince teaches the basics up to more advanced theoretical concepts - to any musician regardless of instrument - how they can be successfully applied in practice.
About Vince
Vince privately teaches trumpet, guitar, electric bass guitar, arranging, composition, music theory, ear training, and improvisation to students of all ages and levels. “Basically he’s the go-to cross-genre horn-blowing utility man of the Philly scene” (John Vettese, WXPN’s The Key). Vince Tampi
