In addition to teaching music, I have also worked as a special education assistant and wrestling/track coach at Lake Zurich Middle School South and an assistant Kung Fu/Tai Chi instructor at Green Mountain Arts in Logan Square, Chicago, Illinois. Jazz piano, Voice, and Composition are my main areas of expertise. However, I have also been recording, and playing guitar almost my entire life. I fully believe in music education not only for entertainment and personal enjoyment, but for many other means.
Beyond its capacity for being used as entertainment, music aids in learning, helps develop advanced motor skills, increases memory function, and many other purposes for a well rounded education. It is my goal to help educate the next generation in traditional music practices as well as incorporate new techniques that are relevant to our
current day and age.

Lesson plans vary from person to person. I always make it a point to get to know the student's existing musical knowledge, goals, and background before I create a personalized lesson plan. All important concepts are covered as they are needed so students can understand theoretical concepts based upon actual application and usage. In short, I teach in a way that students can "dig in" right away and play, create, improvise, sing and/or compose freely and naturally. I always encourage students or parents to contact me with their goals, previous musical training, etc., and discuss what they really want out of lessons so they can get the most out of taking me on as an instructor.

Daniel cancelled my son's first lesson with less than a one hour notice. He attended the second lesson, but again cancelled the third lesson with a 30 minute notice. He sent me a text message to notify me and I called him back and left a voicemail. 24 hours later and I still haven't gotten a call back. I want my money back. He has wasted my son's time. Poor professionalism.

As a student, I was involved for many years as a violist with The Louisville Youth Orchestra, I became a graduate of the Youth Performing Arts School in Louisville, Ky. in 1981 majoring in music and theater. I have since performed in a a broad spectrum of musical involvements including accompanying international folk dance troupes, performing Celtic and traditional music at events in several countries, composing music for, and directing several theatrical productions. At the same time I have been involved in educating children in music in several Community Schools throughout the Eastern U.S.. I now reside in Crestwood, Ky, where where I teach and operate a repair shop
out of my home called 'Hewn from the Mountain Music Cafe''. I also perform in the viola section of the Louisville Philharmonia, and have served as as Public Relations Director on the Board of Directors.

I was very blessed to be on of Tom's students for a few years, working along side him in his shop. I was the untraditional student, an apprentice in a world where such students have become lost. Already a seasoned musician, that didn't mean there wasn't room for me to learn from Thomas. He helped teach me how to play his folk harps, as well as make them and repair them. I learned a great deal of folk traditions, and with his help, stepped outside of my classically trained box. Not to mention, his guidance and support actually gave me the confidence to become a performer, well paid at that. He encouraged me in ways most of my musical teachers failed me...all the more reason to praise his abilities because he was able to help me make many breakthroughs despite many bad teachers over the years. My college education was actually in education, and so, i can proudly say, he was also the most excellent teacher in teaching me how to teach. I was able to witness many of his lessons. Thomas is full of patience, love of music, and enthusiasm...all of which foster any student, no matter what the age or curriculum, to do his or her best. The years I spent with Tom will always be years i remember as extreme growth and fond memories.

Tom McShane has exposed me to a lot of great folk music from a variety of cultures and time periods. He gets you into playing songs right away. This preserves the joy of making music and gives you a sense of accomplishment . I'd taken instrument lessons in the past where the instructor would get all bogged down in technique and I'd never get to play any music, which destroyed my natural joy and motivation. Now I'm regaining it back, so for that I am very grateful.

My first lesson with Justin went well. I have social anxiety so meeting new people is always a stressful experience for me. I was much more comfortable than expected and learned a lot. I definitely recommend Justin if you are looking for lessons in any of the areas he offers.

All my students can expect an experience focused on their musical goals, with lesson plans geared to twenty minut

My studio has a big grand, and a digital piano. The neighborhood is quiet.
Come with confidence, to a studio licensed in Albuquerque for twenty years. I have passed TakeLessons and Albuquerque Public Schools background checks.
After three months, a busy eight-year old beginner could have an easy rendition of "Ode To Joy" or "When The Saints Come Marching In" to perform for loved ones.
My students study technique, rhythm, fingering, expression and general musicianship. All this, while enjoying great musical selections.

The studio lessons are taught in a living room studio exclusively used for piano lessons including a Steinway piano. No pets. Parking in the right side of the driveway.

Mostly classical, with occasional jazz, contemporary Christian, and popular. I mostly teach from notes, though occasionally from lead sheets or through improvisation. The Adventures, Keys for the Kingdom, and Step By Step methods are preferred until the student can play composers' original notes. Then, their recital works tend to come from such as Bach, Beethoven, Clementi, Debussy, and Chopin.

I welcome online students with a desire to learn and an ability to focus. Young students should have a parent or guardian near to direct their attention, if needed.

An excellent, intuitive teacher

Mr. Steve is an outstanding teacher whom I would recommend without reservation. He works at the pace of each of my children and they are eager to work for him too. My son bores quickly, but Steve challenges him with encouragement and speed. My daughter is slower to catch on and he accommodates her speed with equal talent. He is creative in his teaching methods and also in his approach to advising more practice or encouraging practice methods. I hesitate to write this review because I don't want to share the gem we have found in Steve. He is kind, patient, encouraging, excited about the music and the kid's efforts, witty, professional and accommodating. 5 stars.

I love being a teacher, but even more than just that, I thoroughly enjoy assisting others on their journey to learning and making music a personal experience for themselves.

Having said that, here is my teaching philosophy, including what you can expect from me as a teacher and as an individual:

PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING

Each student who comes to me is an individual. I customize each lesson, keeping in mind the student’s level of interest, goals, and intent. I put great care into judging when to push, when to pull back, and when to stop altogether and regroup.

Sometimes there is frustration and as a teacher it is very important to take that experience and turn it into a positive learning situation. During the course of a lesson, we’ll take a "breather" and simply talk about the day, or work on material that is enjoyable and in
stills a sense of self-confidence —anything to release the tension of acquiring a new language-the musical language. Within moments, we are ready to begin again, refreshed and renewed.

I believe it's important to maintain a relaxed environment that encourages self-confidence, self-motivation, musical growth and excellence. To push students too much, being insensitive to their needs and limits, is to fail them. Sometimes this may cause students to dislike not only piano, but music itself. That may translate into personal regret years later. As their teacher, I do anything and everything to avoid that occurrence, making adjustments to their course of study.

Children and adults choose to end pursuing lessons at times, but only on an up-beat note, with suggestions of other paths to explore, other ways to grow and evolve. Closure is consciously done in a respectable and healthy manner, and students are never purposely abandoned. Having musical experience, for whatever length of time, can have lasting positive, even trans-formative effects on a student-child or adult.

As a teacher, I never give up on a pupil and attempt to instill that same dedication in each student. The piano is an instrument that requires passion, discipline, and strength. Moreover, it requires humility in recognizing personal and professional limitations with understanding and peace. We are not all capable of being world-class pianists; however, we can all foster within us their qualities of the love, joy, and awe that music brings to both the listener and performer.

In short: I offer myself as your personal musical guide to assist you in honing the skills needed to become the best musician your mind's eye can imagine. Learning music truly is an adventure that is meant to be fun and rewarding. Our time spent together will uphold that ideal.

Fifteen years of private Classical Piano study under Martha Ashleigh, Hans Boepple, Santa Clara University, California. Seven years of private Classical Viola study under Christine Becktrom, Modesto, California.

Six years of private composition, music theory and counterpoint study under Martha Ashleigh, Dr. Pamela Quist at Santa Clara University and Dr. Michael Fiday at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

EXPERIENCE

In addition to studying piano and composition extensively for many years I've been fortunate to have many other valuable experiences both as a teacher and musician, including but not limited to the following:

As a teacher, I've been teaching for over 5 years, having worked with young children to college age and beyond in a private lesson setting. During my undergraduate years I substituted for my professor at a local community college teaching the keyboard lab class for two semesters in a group piano setting. I have taught not only music but, composition and music theory as well.

As a church musician, I've assisted the Music Director at a northern CA catholic church as organist and pianist. I also accompanied the church choir during holidays and feast days.

As a soloist, I've performed extensively throughout California as a solo artist presenting standard literature and original works, as an accompanist for vocalists, and in chamber ensembles.

As an orchestral musician, I've toured throughout Japan presenting standard literature in Kurume, Fukuoka and Tokyo.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson will vary depending on age and skill level when starting lessons. The first lesson will at minimum assess where your natural musical sensibilities are through a few interactive musicianship activities (rhythm etc.). Depending on the student and lesson time-frame we may also cover one or more of the following: basic hand position, keyboard geography, proper way to sit at piano (posture) and introduce some simple technique building exercises for building finger strength. From there the lesson content will be adapted to the individual's musical needs and goals. In future lessons music theory and musicianship skills will receive emphasis as well.

To what extent deeper aspects of music theory and musicianship are explored and taught will again depend on the student's musical goals keeping the following question in mind: Is music a hobby pursued only for enjoyment or is it being pursued as a serious course of study?

Neither path is better than the other, it is merely a matter of what degree of musical proficiency and understanding you want to walk away with during your time spent learning music.

As a beginner (in the 5-12 years old range), we will typically spend a lot of time discovering music through creative "musical games," flash cards and keeping the teaching atmosphere fun and inspiring. There will also be some technical exercises to build finger strength and dexterity early on which we will continue moving forward.

For younger children (ages 5-8), I prefer for the parents to be present and engaged throughout the learning process and to assist the teacher in supporting the child's musical development. A supportive home environment is important for not only personal, but musical growth.

While I will hold a student to his or her personal musical goals, I will not be overly strict especially with young musicians who are discovering and being introduced to music for the first time. During the early formative years a nurturing environment that instills creativity, self-confidence and self-motivation is the most important. The priority is to engage a young students interest and instill the belief that "playing the piano time" is not a chore, but something exciting and beneficial. Therefore, a mixture of effective musical activities and technique building exercises are implemented throughout the course of study.

Adult beginners will also be introduced to technique building exercises, music fundamentals and learning new repertoire in an age-appropriate context. As your teacher I will keep you accountable to your musical goals and monitor progress accordingly.

All students will be asked to purchase lesson materials that can be received either through the teacher, directly from the publisher online or local music store. Generally, these will include a piano method book, technique, repertoire and theory book. Supplemental materials such as flash cards may need to be purchased as well (often times students make their own flash cards though!)

When I started taking lessons with Dustin, my goals were to improve my ability to play the piano, strengthen my ear, and to have a deeper understanding of music theory. Starting from our first lesson Dustin had a lesson plan already mapped out that would help me accomplish my goals. Now when I play piano, I have the ability to play and write songs with much less effort. The ear training Dustin provided has brought me to the point that I can identify chords and intervals in music clearly. With a good foundation of theory established, being assigned harmonic analysis of a musical piece is not a daunting task. Overall, I have been very happy with Dustin's style of teaching and plan to continue taking lessons with him.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson in my studio would begin with a brief question/answer time with the student to learn how their week has gone, and how their music practice is progressing.

For PIANO LESSONS we begin with Technique including scales and dexterity exercises, then we play from the Lesson book and a Recital selection. I typically let the student play through the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to play the piece again. After that we go over the Theory assignments, and do Ear Training exercises. I am comfortable teaching from a variety of different methods courses. The methods course is chosen according to the student's interest. I never require a piano student to continue using books that are not inspiring. There so many methods courses available, that a student may always be able to have methods books they LOVE.

In my SINGING LESSONS we also begin with a recap of the student's week. Then we continue with Warm Up exercises to prepare the student's voice for the lesson. Then we study Sight Singing and Solfege Singing (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do) to increase the student's listening skills. After that the student sings their selections. Like I do in Piano lessons, I listen to the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to sing the piece again. I am comfortable teaching many styles of vocal music including classical, Broadway, pop, rock, and Christian.

For MUSIC THEORY lessons, the study material is chosen according to the student's interest and age. Topics include notation, chord structure, chord progression, melodic structure, and harmony. I also incorporate Music Listening in the Music Theory lesson in order to learn from the masters in many styles of music. My Music Theory students will also have the opportunity to develop composition and songwriting skills if they desire.

My teaching style is structured and friendly, keeping the student's goals and interests at the forefront. I enjoy motivating students to reach their highest potential.
After 3 to 6 months in my studio my students will see improvement in their musical technique, ear training, music reading, notation, and knowledge. They will be preparing recital pieces for an upcoming performance. I provide three Studio Class performances (February, June, October) and one recital opportunity (December) a year. Most importantly, the student's love and appreciation of music will be growing.

She has also had many mentors who have guided her life and career including: Kathleen Bride, Victor Salvi, Sally Maxwell, Patricia Masri- Fletcher, Robin Gordon- Cartier, Carrie Kourkoumelis, Dr. Craig Pare, and Karen Thielen.

Alexandra has performed in many master classes given by such internationally known harpists as Skaila Kanga, Jana Bouskova, Marie Pierre Langlamet, and Bryn Lewis. She has also organized many masterclasses and events featuring: Kathleen Bride, Sarah Bullen, Gwyneth Wentink, Patricia Masri - Fletcher, Louise Vickerman, Sivan Magen, Sasha Boldachev, Ina Zdorovetchi, Angel Padilla Crespo, Elzbieta Szmytt, Susan Allen, Gayle Levant, Stella Castelucci, Robin Gordon Cartier, Emmanuel Ceysson, Yolanda Kondonasis, and Kim Robertson.
 
Alexandra has performed extensively throughout North America and Europe as a soloist, with small ensembles, and as an orchestral harpist. She has appeared in several television shows such as General Hospital. Her playing,"Is filled with care, artistry, and mature interpretation. She is a talented musician, well rounded in her knowledge of music, and has a healthy curiosity in areas beyond music." (Donald Chen, conductor) "Everything I heard was sensitive, artistic, and had beautiful intonation." (Richard Ferrin, violist emeritus, Chicago Symphony Orchestra).

In addition to playing, Alexandra has also served as the Ambassador for Salvi Harps in North America for the past eleven years. She has given numerous masterclasses and workshops in addition to performing at National Harp Conferences and National and Regional music showcases. In her role as National Sales Manager, she helped harpists from all over the world find their dream harps, learn to care for them, and has mentored them along the way.

Apart from harp activities, Alexandra also enjoys teaching middle school, teaching piano, coaching rowing, participation in sports activities, and writing articles for various journals including: The American Harp Journal, Chicago Health Magazine, and Atlanta Health Magazine. She also enjoys being a board member on the DePauw University Alumni Board and she enjoys working on music startup companies.

*** Lesson Details ***

As a HARP teacher, all of my
students play scales, arpeggios, and technical exercises in
their lessons. I believe having a strong technical base is the foundation for
every part of playing and you can't learn without it. I will set the repertoire
for students according to their technical progress and although I may
take into consideration a student's desires to learn a certain piece, there has
to be time and they have to be ready for it. I have both short term and long
term goals for each student that involve theory, technical ability, and
repertoire: fun, orchestral and solo. Adult students still have to learn
technique, it makes things much more fun and easy six months later, I promise! Beginning students will learn how to read notes, understand basic theory, and technique in a short amount of time, so don't be scared if you have never had a music lesson before. 

I require all students make
at least half an hour a day commitment to practice. I teach mostly the Grandjany method of harp technique, however, I also use Salzedo and Renie methods
at times to fit a particular students' build and unique physical attributes as well as what the piece requires. I
have studied all techniques throughout my education and I find them all
beneficial for different reasons. I do, however, believe everyone is built
differently and the technique should help the harpist play and not hinder them
from achieving their goals. Everyone learns at a different speed, but as a
brand new musician, after six months practicing regularly, you should be able
to read music fluently, understand basic theory concepts, be able to play with
both hands and four fingers on each hand, play all of the basic scales and
arpeggios musically and be able to play at least one piece memorized.
Curriculum is based on the student's technical ability and issues and is
individually created – if you learn slower than someone else, don’t worry about
your pace. In the end, lessons are about you personally and not someone else.

As a PIANO teacher, I want students to learn about music and not just the piano. Students will learn basic music theory and basic scales as a part of their lessons. They will also occasionally choose a song of their choosing to work on chords. I do promote note reading and theory, so I am not the right teacher for students who don't want to invest time in learning the basics. These basics are the building blocks of all music and can be used for any instrument the student chooses to learn in the future.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have harps and a piano at my studio, so you do not need to bring your harp to lessons. If you don't own a harp, you can rent one for around $45/month from several sources. 

*** Specialties ***
HARP - Grandjany Technique with an incorporation of Salzedo and French school depending on the player's body type and technical difficulties. I make use of the ABRSM as well as local, national, and international competitions depending on the student's level of commitment.

PIANO - I teach basic piano for fun through an Intermediate level. Although some students choose to take CM and ABRSM exams, I do not push them. I want students to enjoy piano and music lessons.

Music Theory is just like grammar - the grammar of music. Don't let that scare you! Studying at the Mannes School of Music (a conservatory notorious for its very intense Music Theory classes) I have learned great strategies for tackling its difficulty. I will break down complex chordal harmony or counterpoint and give simple steps in order for you to completely understand the material. Or maybe you have no background in Music Theory - that is great too! I can start simply with learning how to reading music. A good foundation is very necessary! :)
