I am passionate about sharing musical knowledge with others and believe that the most important aspect of teaching music is creating an environment that is encouraging, fun, and individualized for each student. I have over 8 years of experience teaching piano, theory, and guitar to students of all ages and musical backgrounds.

Above all, our lessons will be about learning what you want to learn, no matter the genre. Curriculum for our lessons will draw from variety of methods. These include theory, ear training, sight-reading exercises, body mapping, technique, improvisation skills, composition, and songbooks.

I've been teaching both piano and voice for almost 40 years. I taught elementary vocal/general/choral music in our local public school system for 32 years. I added teaching privately about 10 years later. I work with students ages 3 and up for piano, and ages 8 and up for voice. I welcome students of all levels of experience from the earliest beginner to the most advanced. The lessons are largely focused on technique, theory, and developing skills, and can be adapted to incorporate each students goals. I encourage my students to perform in various talent shows, and other avenues as they become available. We have a Recital every May, and all students are guided through the development of their selected music to take it from the beginning stages to having it ready to perform.

Hi! My name is Janet, and I would like to be your new music lessons teacher! As a quick biography, I have 20+ years of experience teaching both piano and voice lessons. I have taught piano students from as young as 5 years old up to a wonderful lady who was a grandmother many times over, and voice students from 10 years old up to adults. I have taught students of all ability levels, from the most basic beginner to very advanced performers. I welcome you to come to my home studio. I have both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Arts degree in Music from the University of Indianapolis. I retired in 2009 from teaching in the Indianapolis area public schools after 32 years of teaching elementary vocal/general/choral music. During the last 17 years of that time I was also teaching privately during the evenings and on Saturday.

As a student taking lessons with me, I will always put your desires as a musician first, and consider them to be the most important factor in guiding the progress of your lessons. While I will make basic assignments for you to practice for your next lesson, I am always open to including music that you would like to learn. If there is a particular style of music that you would like to study, or even a particular piece of music that you want to learn, please feel free to mention that to me, and I will do my best to find that music to add to your lessons. I will work with you to find the most convenient time for your lessons. Lessons are given in my home studio. While there will be basic material you will need to learn proficiently, you will be free to select the style of music you wish to study. I always tailor the lessons to suit the student's desires and aspirations as a musician.

My piano students are expected to own either a 3-4 octave keyboard, or an acoustic piano. You will also be required to purchase any necessary materials (books, flashcards, etc.). I provide supplemental materials (teaching games, etc.).

I use a variety of methods, mostly based on the goals of the students. For piano students, I prefer the Bastien Piano Basics method books. For voice student, I use a combination of methods developed by several different voice instructors.

Learning guitar should be interesting and fun! While we're studying all the different aspects of the instrument, you'll also be learning how to play your favorite songs and solos! I approach each student as an individual and structure their lessons according to what I determine they need, as well as what they are interested in musically. I concentrate on many different areas; ear training, theory, playing technique, improvisation, various styles of music, and, the physics of the guitar. Understanding how the instrument works is important in my opinion. My long term goal is to teach a student how they can teach themselves down the line. Understanding why you’re playing something is just important as knowing how to play it. I aim to give a student rich and well rounded one-on-one time!

GENERAL BIOGRAPHY:

ave been teaching and performing for over a decade both in the US, and in England. I have played in various bands and have produced independent artists. I have worked for a recording studio and for various academic institutions including the Filomen M. D'Agostino Greenberg Music School in New York city.

I obtained my degree from Purchase College in New York and am a member of their Conservatory of Music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I construct lessons for each individual student depending on their musical tastes, goals, and current skill level etc. I want each person to get as much from their time studying with me as possible. Within three to six months, I'll have you working on timing, theory, ear training, improv, and songs/styles of music you may be interested in. I'm laid back, however, I expect at least the minimum practice time between lessons, which I'll change throughout the course of our time together depending on your skill level etc. Practice materials I draw up are included. I write out everything in plain English and do not require the use of sheet music!

A solid teacher with a lot of experience

Cameron is great at tailoring the lessons to my musical taste without compromising the theory, basics and fundamentals.
I have been taking lessons for one year and will not go elsewhere anytime soon. His vast musical knowledge helps merge the theory with concrete examples. No question remains unanswered.

Students who study with me are taught how to read music. Although I do teach some by ear, I mostly enforce the reading of rhythms and notes on a page. I do this so that they all of my students can be as prepared as possible if they choose music an area of music as a career.

Those who study mallet percussion with me get a chance to go more in depth with music theory as I incorporate in in each lesson as the student learns either an exercise or a solo piece.

About Alex
Alex was born May 31, 1987. Since both of his parents were band directors, he grew up in a very musically inclined family. When he was 15 years old, during his freshman year of high school, he started studying percussion. A year later he began studying under Chad Kohler and continued to do so until 2009. During spring semester of 2009 he studied briefly under Richard Walker at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). In the fall of that year he then transferred to Butler University for an academic year and studied under Craig Hetrick and Jon Crabiel.

Beginning in 2011 Alex began studying attending University of Indianapolis and is currently studying under Paul Berns as well as Art Reiner. In addition to studying with them he has also went back to continue to study with his mentor Chad Kohler. In the time since Alex gr
aduated high school, he has been continuously presented with teaching opportunities. At the time, though, music was not looking like the best course of action for him. With the aid of Chad Kohler, Alex then began getting more involved with teaching percussion. Alex eventually went on to arranging his own parts for his students, as well as composing original percussion ensemble pieces. Alex is currently pursuing his Master's Degree in Music Technology at IUPUI.

In the time since he has been out of high school, he has taught at a number of schools including the Lynhurst 7th & 8th Grade Center, North Putnam Jr./Sr. High School, Broad Ripple Magnet School for the Arts & Humanities, and Lawrence Central. He has also taught at Arlington High School and Short Ridge High School.

When it comes to teaching music, what is known to be as the “Holy Trinity” comes to mind. While teaching I personally believe that it is important to challenge students just enough so that they are not discouraged and are still able to have fun.

The Holy Trinity plays a big role in this. What it consists of is embracing your students from all angles. This would be from ensembles and private lessons, which in turn then encourage them to practice. Ensemble, private lessons, and practicing are the three main categories that make up the “Holy Trinity.” And in using this, you can also be more involved with your students as well. It is always a good idea be friend your students as well and not just be the “teacher.” There is a great quote that goes like this, “They will never care about how much you know, until they know how much you care.” In which case has been proven to be very true time and time again.

It is important as a teacher to be able to inspire your students and to encourage them. Which is why I think it is important to be a good friend as well to your students. This way a kind of trust is formed and in turn can easily lead to the success of a music program. Also I do believe that it is important to expose students to as many forms of music as possible. This way they are not just stuck in one kind of mind set and if they choose to go into music for their career, then they have many different experiences they can pull and relate from. Plus they will also have some more knowledge of different cultures and music genres that can help not only create better music but also be more overall worldly in their personal life out side of music. Being able to learn about music is very important, and can easily impact a student’s life in many different ways that most subjects just do not have the capability to. This is what I believe about learning music and why I also love to teach it. I want my students to be able to have all the same great experiences I have had and more. Which is why I personally believe so heavily in a good music education.

*** Lesson Details ***
Although the approach to teaching that I use comes across as being pretty laid back, I do expect what some might consider to be a lot out of my students. This is because I want to make sure that my students will be successful as musicians.

While a student is studying with me; they will learn about percussion from multiple angles. They will learn and be able to understand many basic music theory terms and principles. They will also learn how each percussion instrument is tied to one another in technique and how to easily transition from instrument to instrument.

Depending on the age of the student, after about three months of studying with me, the student will know a few major scales, most of the standard American rudiments, and some basic drum set concepts. After 6 months, the student will know all 12 major scales, be familiar with all 40 snare drum rudiments, and know a good portion of basic drum set.

Please keep in mind that results may vary depending on the age of the student and the amount of practicing they do on their own. Results also depend upon whether or not they are practicing correctly, which is something they will also learn how to do with me.

In-studio lessons in basement with acoustic drum set. Street parking or drive way. Seating available for parents.

Lessons at the High School will be in the band room with their equipment.

I mostly specialize in marching percussion as well as 2 and 4 mallet percussion.

A strong supporter of the American Harp Society, she is Vice President of the American Harp Society Foundation. Alexandra is also co-chairman of
the distinguished Anne Adams Awards Harp Competition where she has been a main Director for fifteen years. She has served as the President of the Orange County Harp Society Chapter as well as a board member of the Bay Area Harp Society Chapter.

Alexandra received her Bachelor's Degree from DePauw University, majoring in Music and Anthropology. She also completed premedical studies at DePauw after spending her Junior year studying harp at the University of Oregon. She received her Master's Degree from Roosevelt University in Orchestral Studies, and did post graduate work at the University of Southern California in Harp Performance and Anthropology.

Alexandra's harp teachers have included: Sarah Bullen, Sally Maxwell, Edward Druzinsky, JoAnn Turovsky, Harriet Thompson Moore, Kara Bershad, Faye Seeman, Joy Andreasen, and Neva Lydiard. She has also had many mentors who have guided her life and career including: Kathleen Bride, Victor Salvi, Sally Maxwell, Patricia Masri- Fletcher, Robin Gordon- Cartier, Carrie Kourkoumelis, Dr. Craig Pare, and Karen Thielen.

Alexandra has performed in many master classes given by such internationally known harpists as Skaila Kanga, Jana Bouskova, Marie Pierre Langlamet, and Bryn Lewis. In addition to playing, Alexandra has also served as the Ambassador for Salvi Harps in North America for the past eleven years. In her role as National Sales Manager, she helped harpists from all over the world find their dream harps, learn to care for them, and has mentored them along the way.

Apart from harp activities, Alexandra also enjoys teaching middle school, teaching piano, coaching rowing, participation in sports activities, and writing articles for various journals including: The American Harp Journal, Chicago Health Magazine, and Atlanta Health Magazine. She also enjoys being a board member on the DePauw University Alumni Board and she enjoys working on music startup companies.

*** Lesson Details ***

As a HARP teacher, all of my
students play scales, arpeggios, and technical exercises in
their lessons. I believe having a strong technical base is the foundation for
every part of playing and you can't learn without it. I will set the repertoire
for students according to their technical progress and although I may
take into consideration a student's desires to learn a certain piece, there has
to be time and they have to be ready for it. I have both short term and long
term goals for each student that involve theory, technical ability, and
repertoire: fun, orchestral and solo. Adult students still have to learn
technique, it makes things much more fun and easy six months later, I promise! Beginning students will learn how to read notes, understand basic theory, and technique in a short amount of time, so don't be scared if you have never had a music lesson before. 

I require all students make
at least half an hour a day commitment to practice. I teach mostly the Grandjany method of harp technique, however, I also use Salzedo and Renie methods
at times to fit a particular students' build and unique physical attributes as well as what the piece requires. I
have studied all techniques throughout my education and I find them all
beneficial for different reasons. I do, however, believe everyone is built
differently and the technique should help the harpist play and not hinder them
from achieving their goals. Everyone learns at a different speed, but as a
brand new musician, after six months practicing regularly, you should be able
to read music fluently, understand basic theory concepts, be able to play with
both hands and four fingers on each hand, play all of the basic scales and
arpeggios musically and be able to play at least one piece memorized.
Curriculum is based on the student's technical ability and issues and is
individually created – if you learn slower than someone else, don’t worry about
your pace. In the end, lessons are about you personally and not someone else.

As a PIANO teacher, I want students to learn about music and not just the piano. Students will learn basic music theory and basic scales as a part of their lessons. They will also occasionally choose a song of their choosing to work on chords. I do promote note reading and theory, so I am not the right teacher for students who don't want to invest time in learning the basics. These basics are the building blocks of all music and can be used for any instrument the student chooses to learn in the future.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have harps and a piano at my studio, so you do not need to bring your harp to lessons. If you don't own a harp, you can rent one for around $45/month from several sources. 

*** Specialties ***
HARP - Grandjany Technique with an incorporation of Salzedo and French school depending on the player's body type and technical difficulties. I make use of the ABRSM as well as local, national, and international competitions depending on the student's level of commitment.

PIANO - I teach basic piano for fun through an Intermediate level. Although some students choose to take CM and ABRSM exams, I do not push them. I want students to enjoy piano and music lessons.

I have taught private piano lessons to all ages and levels for more than forty years. I teach both in my home and in students' homes. If I teach in a student's home, there must be a piano or keyboard on the first floor of the home. For lessons in your home, you will need to pay an additional fee for my travel expenses. I teach sightreading, rhythm, musical expression, technique and music theory. The student will need either a piano or keyboard available for practicing between lessons. Titles of method books to be purchased will be given to the parent at the first lesson. If a student has books that were used with a previous teacher, I will consider continuing in those books if they are the appropriate level for the student. I am a professional singer, pianist, songwriter, and recording artist. I graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University with a Bachelors of Music, specifically voice.

Voice students can expect to improve week to week in their vocal technique. Every voice has a unique timbre; I teach students to release built up tension and apply foundational techniques in order to unlock their own individual sound. I can help any student to sing with freedom, confidence, and expression.

I teach piano students of all different ages and experience levels. I studied classical piano for 16 years, and contemporary keyboard for 7 of those. I can teach students to read music and pursue classical excellence, to learn how to play contemporary music using chord sheets, or both depending on the goals and preference of the student.

About Olivier
My name is Olivier Huebscher. I am a horn player who received my MM in Horn Performance from Indiana University and am currently working on my DM. I was born in Switzerland in 1989, and have performed in wide variety of cultures and venues, from television soundtrack recording in Thailand, to full opera productions. Currently finishing my Doctorate at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, I am equally comfortable performing in studio recordings, opera pits or symphonic stages. In addition to being a member of Santa Monica Symphony, American Youth Symphony, Columbus Philharmonic and Redlands Symphony, I am a dedicated chamber musician, performing with Volante Winds as well as recording Mahler’s Symphony No 9 with the Kammermahler ensemble.
I have performed with American Youth Symphony, Redlands Symphony Orchestra and Columbus
Philharmonic as well as being a finalist for Macau Symphony and semi-finalist for New World Symphony. I have also performed in sections with Dale Clevenger, Jeff Nelsen and Elizabeth Freimuth. My teaching style relies on simplifying breathing and focusing on achieving the best possible musical results. I take into account each student's goals and desires and tailor lessons to get the end result they want. I have worked with many beginning students as well so whether your goal is an upcoming school or ensemble audition or just trying to sound as beautiful as possible I will help you achieve your goals.
I also have a minor in music theory as well as years of theory tutor experience ranging from teaching how to read music notation to Schenkerian analysis.

About Andrew
Andrew is a dynamic educator with years of experience teaching students of all ages. He recently graduated from the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where he studied classical percussion, jazz, and Afro-Cuban music. A native to southern California, Andrew obtained his bachelors degree from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University Long Beach.

Andrew's love for teaching has been on display in private settings, as well as classrooms. He enjoys learning new techniques to inspire and challenge students to maximize their potential while also providing a fun environment.

Throughout his career, Andrew has performed both solo and ensemble music in numerous venues across the country, including the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles and Carnegie Hall in New York. His performance career started
when he joined the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets as a snare drummer in 2003. During his membership, the corps won the Best Percussion Caption Award twice and the DCI Open Class World Championship in 2008. His passion and dedication as a marimba soloist were on display when he performed the world premier of Nathan Daughtrey's Halcyon Days with the CSULB Percussion Ensemble. Since beginning his studies at the Jacobs School of Music, Andrew has recorded and performed as the bongocero with seven time Grammy nominee Wayne Wallace in the IU Latin Jazz Ensemble.

To the extent of what I learned in my experience, Andrew is a great percussion teacher for students looking to join a band or marching band. He obviously had a great amount of knowledge and experience with the instrument itself but also the teaching of it. By the end of the first lesson we had already moved to patterns with 8 strikes on each hand and was presented with an arsenal of other exercises for afterwards to find a rate of improvement when given time. He is a very patient teacher and is sensitive to mistakes and which ones to focus on. I could safely recommend him to any of my friends who are also into percussion, and can speak from experience that any nervousness of getting a new teacher quickly dissolves after the first lesson. Great teacher.

Dennis Tobenski is a composer and vocalist with 12 years of professional experience, and offers lessons in Composition, Classical Voice, and Music Theory.

Dennis has been actively making music since the age of 9, when he first picked up a viola and joined his grade school orchestra. He began singing at the age of 12, and composed his first work at 14. He received two Bachelor of Music degrees in Vocal Performance and Music Theory & Composition from Illinois State University. He received an M.A. in Music from City College of New York, where he studied with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Del Tredici.
