I have played the guitar for twenty years and have studied a wide variety of music including jazz, classical, folk, blues and rock. I’m skilled in acoustic, electric and classical styles of the guitar. I have an open mind about music and can appreciate any style or type. I have a firm background on music theory, so I am able to explain what I am teaching. I excelled in all my classes in college, music and Gen Eds, with a GPA over 3.75. I also have experience in teaching guitar or bass to students ranging from the ages of six to sixty six. I enjoy taking what I have learned and passing it on to someone else to experience. I also went to Harper College between 1997-2000 and I completed an Associates in Fine Arts of Music.

I tailor all my lessons to the individual students interests and wants.
Whatever your goals are, I'll help you get there.
If you just want to learn music theory or how to write a song, I can teach you all that and more.
I will teach you how to read music but if you don't wan't to do that, I will teach you how to read tablature.
I'll push you to learn your instrument and to practice but I won't force to practice anything that you are not interested in.
After about 3-6 months of lessons with me you will be able to play songs that you wanted to learn and you will also know all the essential fun basics of your instrument.
Learning the guitar or bass is fun! And as your teacher I will make you want to practice.

I've had 4 lessons with Paul and they've been very good. I've had 4 other teachers over the years but Paul had tailored the lessons to my goals as a student rather than feeding me random information. He's very knowledgeable and his ear training is excellent. He's easy to work with and helpful. Highly recommended.

I told Paul that my goal is to be able to pick up the guitar at home or with friends and feel comfortable playing along. After 4 lessons I'm playing 12 bar blues, comfortable with several scales, and even writing my own chord progressions. Not only a good teacher he's been very accommodating to my work/travel schedule.

Jesus has more than 15 years experience teaching piano and 5 years teaching the Suzuki piano method, with dozens of his students playing successfully in recitals, competitions, and auditions around the Chicago area.

He completed his Masters of Music in Piano Performance with a scholarship from Roosevelt University, Chicago, Il. Renowned Mexican pianist Jorge Federico Osorio and Dr. Ludmila Lazard were his advisers and professors. In addition, during his program at Roosevelt University, Jesus took a course aimed at developing figure base and harpsichord performance with Dr. David Schrader.

In 2012 he was certified piano Suzuki teacher by the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

Jesus performs solo recitals and lieder by Rachmaninoff, Shubert, and Schumann with his wife the soprano Darina Assenova in festivals such as “Shuberti
ade”, which is organized by Pianoforte Foundation in Chicago and Make Music Chicago.

He often performs in Cultural Festivals in Mexico and United States and has performed with major orchestras as a soloist and as accompanist.

All his piano students are active as performers. Jesus always encourages them to perform in public, looking for piano festivals, competitions, recitals, auditions and any opportunities where they can showcase their talent. His students have been accepted in pre-college music schools in Chicago.

*** Lesson Details ***
I focus on the basic piano technique skills when I start with a new student, it includes good posture of the body, good hand shape, firm fingertips, loose arm weight, good position of each finger, and flexible wrist. I always look for a rich tone production when playing each key of the keyboard in order to create a beautiful musical discourse throughout the piano piece.

When the student is from 3 to 6 years old I use the Suzuki method. When the student is older than 6 I combine the traditional and Suzuki method having great results with the student's performances.

My Philosophy: All my students learn to play piano in an artistry, confident, and joyful way.

Lessons in living room with upright piano, couches, bookshelves, etc. Parents can sit in on lessons.

I can provide copies of some piano works. But I also expect my students to buy their own books and have their own instrument.

My girls started taking lessons from Mr. Garcia at age 4. He is an excellent instructor and keeps lessons and weekly practice assignments fun and challenging. He uses a combination of methods to best suit the interests of each of my daughters. They really look forward to their weekly lessons. I have seen significant progress in their piano skills. Mr, Garcia is very good at acknowledging their accomplishments which is extremely important for young, beginning piano players. I highly recommend him.

Music theory lessons go over the basic theory skills to assist in composition and performance. These involve, notation, rhythm, chord structure, chord progression, style and genre, as well as transposition. Theory is necessary, especially with instrumentalists, but I include it in all vocal lessons as well. Over the last ten years, I've taught that theory is the backbone of music, and understanding it not only assists in composition, but in piecing together notes and phrases. With a customized curriculum, goals are reached within a planned time frame.

I have always been fascinated with how music is created and who works behind the scenes of performances and recordings. I started playing the flute in elementary school, piano in junior high school, and singing in high school. Once I got to UMASS, Dartmouth I chose the Music option for my major. I then moved on to NYU. I have been teaching for over ten years now. Working with students both in person and online has been amazing. With online lessons I am able to work with students who love the convenience of being at home and in person I can show students what it is like to really grow! I love my students of all ages, and can only hope to show others how amazing music can be. My home studio is in a private music room. Parents can relax in our family space with coffee or tea and enjoy their children's learning at their leisure. My studio includes a 88-key keyboard, technology setup with an iMac, microphone and stand, a mirror for posture and musical instruments. I carry books for the lessons themselves (not for practice at home), and we can download or print out music as desired. If you take lessons online, I can email you links and sheet music as needed. My musical journey started in high school when my algebra teacher saw me in the hallway, grabbed my hand and brought me to the choir room to sign up for The Sound of Music auditions. To this day I cannot believe my math teacher unknowingly sent me straight down a path that I would walk the rest of my life. After The Sound Of Music I never left music. I kept singing in high school by participating in the school musicals and different choir ensembles. When it came to college I started taking private lessons and music classes for fun until I realized this is my passion and I wanted to make a life of this. When you wake up everyday and the first thing you do is sing at that point there was no other way to live. There I started my journey with really learning the voice as an instrument and how it works. I found that I am a vocal scientist
at heart believing you will go a long way as long as you know how to grow. Being a vocal scientist, I find it so interesting to know what exactly needs to happen when we sing in order sing in a healthy and beauitful manner.

While I was at Moraine Valley after I firmly choose music I felt I needed more of a diverse program so I can answer any possible music based question. I then went on to get my degree at VanderCook College of Music where they teach nothing but music education. Their program intensely teaches all the band and orchestral instruments on top general education classes and your major, mine being voice. While I was there I also took the time to study privately with our percussion professor to learn rhythms and with our sight singing and ear training professor to further develop my ear and knowledge. All in all I have been studying the voice for 11 years and counting. I do all this so that I could pass that experience down to you.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my lessons I like to teach vocal techniques such as raising your soft palate, correct breathing techniques, and a forward placement. These are the tools to help a vocal musician grow for the rest of their lives.

Another part of being a vocal musician that I teach in every lesson is ear training and or rhythm. These are things I wish I would have learned earlier on and are essential to being an independent musician.

I like to keep a more uplifting environment when teaching so although you should expect a push for success, you should always feel comfortable and not afraid to make mistakes.

Practicing is an essential part of the learning process. Students are given practical ideas on how to make practicing more effective and enjoyable.

Being a singer is not easy at all, so I will challenge my students by giving exercises that challenge them to sing for proficient. I will also bring in material that is brand new and ask the students questions about the piece. The student is in the lesson to learn everything about music, so any type of material that I feel will benefit them and help them move closer to their goal, I will definitely present to them. After 3 to 6 months students will be able to sing in the 3 minor keys and the major key. The student will also have knowledge and know how to sing at least 3 different modes. The singer will know how to read basic sheet music and perform it with solfege. The singer will also have 4 songs of my choice or their choice mastered and ready to perform in front of an audience. Lastly, the singer will have knowledge of proper breath control while performing, usage of a microphone, and intonation.

About Daniel
Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.

Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive appro
ach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.

The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.

Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Knowledgeable about many areas of music (teaches many instruments). Very professional. Treats my child with respect and is good about focusing on the fundamentals of good playing so as not to develop bad habits which become harder to correct if not corrected early on. Daniel is a natural teacher and inspires his students to share his love for music. He has a lot of experience and is patient with learners of all abilities. I have had 3 lessons with him so far and have thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I am new to singing but learned piano when I was younger so I am not entirely new to music. He has helped me expand my horizons and believe in what I can do with my voice. During class, we cover music theory as well as the actual singing part. Hello, my name is Ethan. I'm a professional musician living in the DC area. I perform in jazz clubs, concert halls, restaurants and more on upright an electric bass.

My main performance experience is in jazz settings--I've performed with jazz artists like Rufus Reid, Gary Bartz, Steve Turre, and Marshall Keys. Additionally, I've received Outstanding Soloist and Outstanding Small Jazz Combo Awards from Downbeat Magazine.

Ethan has been the perfect teacher for my kids. They respect him. He gives them praise when it is well-earned, but also constructive comments, which I appreciate. He has set the expectations high and thereby motivated them to work much harder than I would have thought possible. They have improved greatly in just a few months of lessons with him. He is excellent about working on improving their technical skills (scales, making sure they can and are reading the music).Now that they have improved to the extent that they have the reward of playing pieces that sound like "real" music, they are much more enthusiastic about playing. But Ethan showed great patience early on when there wasn't as much enthusiasm. Ethan also has them playing duets with each other and he plays duets with them and jazzes up his part which they really enjoy. This also has the effect of showing them what might be possible some day if they stick with it. Administratively, Ethan always communicates with me about his schedule in advance and has been accommodating about rescheduling lessons when one of us has a conflict. Overall could not be happier and my kids will be sticking with Ethan as long as his schedule has room for us.

I am comfortable working with students on basic music theory, classical, and jazz. We will use theory to help your knowledge/comfortability on a specific instrument, and/or to accompany your understanding of music you enjoy listening to.

About Hunter
My primary teaching philosophy revolves around the idea of creativity and cooperative problem solving. I believe that all musicians should be actively training their ears as well as their abilities on their instrument. I focus on all elements of basic musicianship while incorporating improvisation and composition in an inspiring way.

I grew up playing jazz, soul, R&B, folk, reggae, ska, funk, and classical music. I feel very comfortable working within all of these genres in both performance and educational atmospheres.

Regardless of age, learning a new instrument or art form can be daunting, so I like to include some sort of entertaining activities to keep tension low and inspiration high.
