Rina is an organized instructor who perceives my son’s strengths/weaknesses and demonstrates real concern for him as a blossoming musician. She goes out of her way in unexpected ways such as helping him acquire a better instrument at a bargain price. Wow!

A great first lesson even though my oboe didn’t work. I learned a lot of fingerings and about reed making. Great fun.

We feel very fortunate to have Rina M. as our daughter’s music instructor, for oboe and guitar. Our daughter’s musical ability and knowledge has grown exponentially, and her music teacher at school has praised her understanding of music / music theory, most of which she learned since working with Mrs. Rina. We are so happy to have found TakeLessons, as this is how we were introduced to Mrs. Rina. She is very special to us, and we highly recommend her!

Stephanie is great. She’s very knowledgeable and patient. I never thought I’d be taking singing lessons or any kind of vocal training. But, after trying it out on a whim, I’m hooked and want to continue improving.

Stephanie has been an amazing vocal teacher for me!! In the past few months that I have been learning with her, she has helped me find confidence in my singing voice and has taught me valuable techniques to help me develop better vocal skills. I definitely feel like I’m singing in a healthier way and have better range. Stephanie is super patient and diligent in her work and is always willing to provide feedback and help throughout the week in between lessons. Could not recommend taking lessons with her more :)

At my granddaughter's request, I listened and enjoyed her lesson very much! Miss Ginni was very enthusiastic and demonstrated competence in working with adolescents and knowing her music well. She could tell the notes from just listening to my granddaughter play and she continually praised her efforts.Yet she kindly corrected mistakes when needed.
I learned from listening and I think I might like Miss Ginni as a teacher too!

Nick was a patient and enthusiastic teacher. I was nervous to start music lessons in my late 30s, but he made me feel comfortable and I never felt embarrassed. He taught me the songs I was interested in learning, but snuck in music theory and the basics along the way! Highly recommend
Shannon
Nick has done a great job with our 14 year old son! He has a great laid back style that is appreciated and keeps the lessons fun and engaging. Not only is he learning to play some of his favorite songs, but he is also getting ear training, music reading, picking, chord building, etc. We would highly recommend Nick!
Rachel
I would very highly recommend Nick as a guitar teacher. I've been taking lessons for five weeks and he has already helped me a lot with my technique. He has a great combination of the knowledge of a professional musician and also the patience and guidance of a very experienced teacher.

I also like that he is helping me with ear training. I've had previous experience with reading music, but he is really expanding my horizons with listening to music and trying to figure it out by using basic principles. This is a way to learn that I hadn't experience before in guitar lessons in the past, and I think it's a great way to learn.

I'm looking forward to many more lessons to come. This has really helped me to enjoy playing the guitar again!

He made it easy for me to understand concepts that were always lost on me in the past. It was the best money I have ever spent to get my skills and knowledge where I need them to be. I highly recommend Shon as both a theory and instrument (guitar/piano) instructor. Definitely the best option if you want to take you or your child's playing to the next level."

"Music Theory and Music Performance

Ms. Wilma's enthusiasm for life and music shines through in her instrumental playing and teaching style. She shows a strong proficiency in many music genres and can teach different kinds of musical instruments.

She's reliable, experienced, professional, and easy to be around. One of her main strengths is her ability to convey musical thoughts in a way that is meaningful, constructive and easily understood.
I really enjoyed how she have enriched my ability to think about musical concepts, discuss theories in music, and listen to different types of music."

She encouraged me to dig deeper and push past the surface when analyzing works, an important skill I use every day as a theorist. "Tomoko is a fantastic tutor. I had a lot of trouble understanding music theory because it had been a topic I hadn't seen before. She was able to explain things to me in a very clear and easy way. She was also able to help me with ear training lessons which was also surprisingly easy, considering it was a topic I felt I had a lot of trouble with at the time. She's one of the best, no doubt.

Also, if you happen to get piano lessons from her, I'm sure you'll get more than your money's worth. She's an amazing jazz, classical, and overall pianist."

How to Change the Key of a Song With and Without a Computer

What Does it Mean to Change a Key? To change a song’s “key” means to shift the whole musical system to a higher or lower position. This process is called “transposition.” Performers often need transpose a song to better fit their voices. That way, a performer with a naturally lower singing voice (like myself) will be able to more comfortably sing a song that was originally written for someone with a naturally higher voice. Or vice versa.  For singers, transposition feels fairly …

Why You Should Learn (At Least a Little) Music Theory

Many people assume that learning theory is difficult (it isn’t) that it has no practical purpose (it does), or even that it will actively make them worse at making music (quite the opposite). I’m here to convince you that learning a little about how music works is one of the most important skills you can develop and should absolutely be part of your daily practice routine. Here are five reasons w …
