In addition to bass lessons, I also teach music theory. I would like to help students understand how music works and give them a deeper understanding of music composition. I have experience composing big band music for the University of Texas Jazz Orchestra and other small jazz groups. I also have experience with basic classical music theory and contemporary songwriting.

About Chase

I am a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Jazz Studies. I was a member of the Jazz Orchestra and performed with many artists such as Cyrus Chestnut while at the University of Texas. I can teach electric bass, upright bass, key bass, music theory and production. I have

A basic understanding of how the theory of music works; i.e., scales and how they are made up, key signatures and why, basic music notation, and chords and how they are constructed will equip you so that you can write your own songs down! Great composers of the past understood the basics of the structure of music, and therefore were able to compose great works even from an early age. As the ancient writers have shown us, an understanding of the workings of the musical scale can lead to a greater understanding of Creation itself!! Let's dig in!

I am a professional speaker and I decided to pursue some speaker voice coaching. This was my first lesson and Vanessa was friendly and great personality. I felt comfortable with her
immediately. She provided education, demonstration, observed me apply the techniques, and offered constructive feedback. After the class, I was excited to practice what I learned. I will definitely continue to go back to Vanessa. I highly recommend her.

Andrew is such a great teacher! I'm a beginner guitar player who wanted to learn some of the basics and work on my technique, and Andrew was so patient and really took the time to work with me. Very easy-going and helpful, even though I know I'm not the best player. He clearly knows what he's doing when it comes to anything guitar-related and I cannot wait to set up another lesson. I already feel more confident in my abilities! Thanks Andrew!

Exactly what you want in an instructor: knowledgeable, patient, and supportive!
Travis
As an adult learner who plays multiple instruments, I’ve had every type of teacher you can imagine. It’s always a struggle to find a teacher able to work with the unique requirements of being an adult with adult obligations and time constraints.

Tom, as it turns out, is that rare teacher able to not just handle these unique requirements, but is also fantastic at finding and focusing on knowledge gaps, whether it be playing, theory, tone, or anything else I throw at him.

Prior to taking lessons with Tom, I had barely held a trumpet, and I’m progressing at a rate far faster than I had imagined I would.

So don’t bother looking elsewhere, Tom is who you need!
Heather
My son Callum says he's 100% certain he's going to get better at trumpet by working with Tom.

A talented, patient teacher, Gretchen epitomizes the best qualities for musical instruction. Her technical knowledge of music theory is by far the most complete and deepest of anyone I have encountered. She has encouraged the gradual emerging of a latent talent talent I never knew I had as I was always discouraged from attempting any musical education.

My approach as a music teacher is to first teach the student to relax and have fun with their instrument. I use backing tracks to help the student feel a beat or groove to a song. This is very important. Theory, technic and ear training are important but useless if the student doesn't first feel and enjoy music. We all sing along and dance to our favorite songs but in many cases, the joy goes away when we begin to actually study music. I don't want to take the joy away. First we have fun. Playing is learning.

I have been taking drum lessons with Mitch for over 2 years. He is a great teacher!

Mitch is very attentive to a student's level of learning and is patient with the student. But if a given lesson is quickly learned, he moves forward right away. This means to me he pays attention to what is going on and is flexible to help the student get the best use of their time.

"Catherine always found different ways to explain theory points that I didn’t understand. She always found time to meet with me and definitely put 100% effort even when she was having a recital or in an opera. She is honestly why I was able to pass TP 1, 2, and 3. She is a natural teacher. I am so thankful to have had her the past two years as my theory and keyboard tutor."
