I teach beginner cello primarily using the Suzuki books, but supplement with other materials when needed. My students work on scales and rhythm constantly to improve their tone and musicality as well as technique. I teach classical, religious, fiddle, and more. I also teach group ensembles, trios, quartets, and I work with students on their school orchestral and audition pieces.

About Erin

My name is Erin. I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music, with a concentration in Violin. I began studying violin at the age of six. Erin went above and beyond to get me my first ever violin/fiddle lesson on my birthday as part of a surprise from my family. As someone who plays other instruments but has never touched anything with a bow, I was very thankful to have Erin to introduce me to the instrument with patience but also thoroughness and clear expertise. Very much looking forward to continuing lessons with Erin as I begin to learn this instrument.

I have played in a variety of musicals and various college orchestras and chamber groups. Because of my approach to music I don't consider classical my forte but I can still teach any student cellist a great amount about beginning to advanced playing in any style - including classical.

I am also comfortable playing a variety of styles on the cello, namely jazz.

About Jared

I am overjoyed and grateful to say I have been teaching music since 2008. I am a very friendly and fun teacher with a great deal of professionalism and patience. More importantly, I love teaching and playing music with a passion. I play a great variety of instruments and have had the opportunity

I have over 30 years of experience teaching cello. Every student has different needs; I work with you at whatever point you are at; beginners through advanced students welcome. I have a doctorate in cello. I've played cello all my life; in recent years I have learned (and can teach) 5-string cello, as well.

I recommend lessons 30 minutes in duration for beginners, particularly children. (Adult beginners can choose 30 or 45 minutes.) Students who can play longer pieces definitely need a little longer lesson so we get through everything.

I use Suzuki books for their inexpensive repertoire but I do not teach using the Suzuki method nor do I teach rote playing. I supplement these books with technique materials from Rick Mooney (Position Pieces, Thumb Position) and studies by cellist-composers of the past. If you have an interest in another area of playing, let's talk and find pieces that interest you.

Cello:
A bowed or plucked string instrument with four strings tuned in perfect fifths. The strings from low to high are generally tuned to C2, G2, D3 and A3, an octave lower than the viola. It is a member of the violin family of musical instruments, which also includes the violin and viola and the double bass. The cello is used as a solo musical instrument, as well as in chamber music ensembles (e.g., string quartet), string orchestras, as a member of the string section of symphony orchestras, and some types of rock bands. It is the second-largest and second lowest (in pitch) bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra, the double bass being the largest and having the lowest (deepest) pitch. My lessons always start out with the basics! We start out by learning notes by plucking the strings and then the bow is soon incorporated. The goal is to eventually learn all the notes on the fretboard and also learning how to read and play chords. As the student progresses ...

Karen was great!

This teacher misrepresented her ability to teach the C system chromatic button accordion. I don't believe that she has ever played one. I asked her before purchasing a set of classes if she knew this instrument and was competent to teach it, and she said she was.

She didn't have one, so she could never demonstrate anything I asked about. She didn't know the key layout. She didn't know the conventions for numbering fingers. She didn't know the basic home key scale pattern.

I waited until I'd finished four classes with my new teacher before writing this so I'd have a good basis for comparison. He is immensely better at teaching this than she was. It further convinced me that she never should have represented herself as competent to teach this particular instrument.

Catherine has been a terrific violin instructor for both my 14 year old daughter and 13 year old son. She is very passionate and methodical in keeping them motivated and engaged in learning the violin. She has been great and the kids love her as a teacher. My daughter has resumed her violin playing now that she has lessons with Catherine. She had stopped for a year, and after a few lessons her tone started to sound just like it was when she left off. She improves with each virtual lesson, but most importantly she really enjoys them. I also appreciate that we can schedule lessons
at intervals other than weekly. Thank you, Catherine!

"I’m taking beginner cello lessons with Linda.

She is super positive and encouraging and meets me exactly where I am in my learning and goes from there.

She asks what I want to do, points out when I miss things (like not taking a proper pause), and teaches me new skills (theory, now technique, etc.)

Very positive experience! After four weeks I can play cello while site reading the bass clef (I knew how to read piano music but not the bass clef very well).

I’m going to renew my lesson subscription with Linda!"

"I took lessons from Maria for 6 years, starting the summer just before I entered high school. Initially I was embarrassed because I knew most kids learning an instrument had started years before me, and I hadn't had any experience with reading sheet music or anything like that.

But she never held any preconceived notions about where my ability *should* be, which helped me feel comfortable learning the cello for fun, which was why I was taking lessons. And Maria was always patient working with me on whatever little part of a piece I struggled with week after week until I got it. She let me self direct how I wanted to learn, so I didn't spend as much time memorizing music theory and was able to learn through playing, which worked well for me.

While taking lessons through high school and part of college, I had a lot of difficult classes and sometimes had to sacrifice my short-term cello progress to make time for them. I always felt bad when this happened, but Maria understood and once the air cleared I was always excited to catch up to where I wanted to be.

Cello was always something kind of meditative where I could make something beautiful by putting in time, and I don't think I would enjoy playing now if I hadn't had the warm guidance of such a great teacher on my journey through the music world."

What is the Suzuki Cello Method?

The Suzuki method, founded in 1945 by violinist Shinichi Suzuki as the Talent Education Movement, is one of the most enduring teaching methods, or pedagogies for young string players. Suzuki’s main goal for his music education system was to give students a “noble spirit,” which would instill respect and cooperation through his method. The method was brought to America in the 1960s by John D. Kendall, and today the Suzuki Association of the Americas instructs new teachers and studen …
