Theory is essential if you want to understand what you're doing!
I have been teaching piano for over 40 years, full-time for the past 15. Besides the actual repertoire, technique and theory are always included in my lessons because they are essential. Sight reading and ear training are also included in some lessons.
I stress accuracy in playing and attention to details! I also teach my students HOW to practice. Slow, accurate practice is the answer. Practicing takes patience!
Please note: Home lessons must be at a location that I can get to easily with public transportation. I do not have a car.
About Emil
I started to study the piano at the age of seven with Hrant Minassian in my hometown of Island Park, New York. During high school I continued my studies with Jack Chaikin , a graduate of the Juilliard School. I attended Hofstra University where I received a B.A. in Music in 1979. At Hofstra, my pia

Emil is a wonderful teacher. He is far and away the most accomplished piano player I have studied with, and his knowledge of, and facility for, playing really comes through in his instruction. He is always bringing formal instruction back to the act of performance, and how to make whatever piece you are working on, even the simplest, sound the best that it can be.
Emil isn't afraid to share his own struggles with whatever piece he is currently working on, and pointing out that he faces the same challenges that every practicing player faces.
Emil is personable, knowledgeable, and kind. I can't recommend him highly enough as an instructor.

All musicians benefit enormously from an understanding of how it all works. I love teaching theory from the ground up, mastering the simplest concepts in order to understand the most sophisticated effects and applications. Theory is painless and fun, and understanding it will enhance your listening, your playing, and your composing.

Music Theory is EASY!!! I have in depth discussions about Jazz Harmony with one of my 9-year-old students. I am not kidding! Using the Piano, Staff, and the student's primary instrument, I will make sense of the mystery and we will quickly build a solid foundation of usable, musical knowledge.
Starting with the Major Scale students are introduced to Intervals, Triads, Seventh Chords and Extended Harmony. Students then learn about Minor Scales and Modes. A very simple explanation of the Circle of Fifths leads us into Key Modulation. There is also a Rhythmic component to each lesson in which students learn to read rhythmic notation. We discuss Time Signatures, accents, basic Rudiments, Poly-rhythm and Syncopation.
My goals are for students to know HOW music works. Music is about creativity. It is about developing an idea then using sound to convey that idea to another person. While learning Music Theory can help prompt ideas, the biggest benefit is the simplicity in development;

Popular Music Theory Articles from our Blog
One of the most common weaknesses for amateur musicians is a lack of music theory knowledge. Many people assume that learning theory is difficult (it isn’t) that it has no practical purpose (it does), or even that it will actively make them worse at making music (quite the opposite). I’m here to convince you that learning a little about how music works is one of the most important skills you can develop and should absolutely be part of your daily practice routine. Here are five reasons w …
