Music Theory Lessons in Fort Meade. Amazing Teachers.

I have taught theory at the college level for 14 years (University of Montana, Western) and high school music students for 20 years. Currently incorporate theory in all my music classes at Flathead Valley Community College where I teach in Montana.

I have a Bachelor of Arts and extensive background in Music Theory. I am able to teach to all ages and abilities.

Teach students a basic understanding of music theory using voice and/or piano as the learning tool (*cannot teach on guitar). For those wanting to learn music theory for beginning piano they will need to have access to a piano or keyboard for practice between lessons, nothing fancy required, an inexpensive keyboard will suffice.

Students will learn about the basic elements of written music: time signatures, note and rest values, meter, rhythm, tempo, keys, intervals, how the circle of fifths works, relative minor scales, all major scales, etc. For those wishing to learn theory on beginning piano, they will also learn how to play chords (major, minor, diminished, basic 7th chords, sus4, etc), inverted chords and how to transpose songs into different keys. Work will be done mostly in reading and understanding written sheet music examples, vocal practice and chord charts.

Music Theory is a struggle for everyone, but over the years I've reached a deep understanding with it, and found it very helpful for me as a musician.

In our first lesson, I will likely ask you to demonstrate your level to me, so that I can better understand your strengths and weaknesses and go from there. You can expect to come away from our first lesson with some learning materials, a plan for going forward, and an encouraging start to our journey as music theorists together!

My background in music theory makes me capable of tutoring students in a wide range of music theory subjects. Through my extensive studies, I have learned about music theory and its history dating back to the Renaissance era (c. 1400s). My Music Theory Minor from Northwestern University has given me the opportunity to study music theory in many different contexts beginning with simple Roman numeral chord analysis and delving as deep as composing small four-voice fugues. A student who studies theory with me can expect to become an expert at music analysis, beginning with species counterpoint and continuing from there based on the student's subject interests. I am able to personalize the learning materials of each of my students by using different musical examples that I have studied over the fourteen theory courses I have taken so far. I took the AP Music Theory class in high school and received a 5 on the exam and am also able to help tutor students who wish to pass the test.
