I have a BA in composition from the University of California at Berkeley, and am qualified to tutor you on harmony, counterpoint and all aspects of both classical and pop music theory.
My job is to get your child crazy about the piano. If you have to nag your child to play, something is wrong. The basics are, of course, important, but until you have gotten the child to accept and love the piano as an object of enjoyment, all that practicing will go nowhere.
How do I do it?
I think it's easier to learn the piano if you are having fun, and that means playing music that you like.
You can always choose what you will play in lessons, and lessons are designed around your preferences, and move at a pace comfortable to you. The basics are still taught, but at a pace that your child finds comfortable. The result of this is that I will get your child to go the piano and play by themselves with no nagging.
I have had the complete classical conservatory experience, yet that doesn't mean I expect that of you in any way,
For children, the best start involves games and immediate playing to give the child a taste of the real joy of making music. Reading exercises have their place, but not at the very beginning.
I want you to play a song you know and enjoy your first lesson, and I can easily help you do that.
It's in your interest to play meaningful music, (to you) right away. It is possible for anyone can play music far more complex than what they can read on a page, so my first goal is to get you started playing real songs on your first lesson.
Education: BA University of California, Berkeley. Graduate work at University of Southern California Film School, Trinity College of Music, London. Emmy Award winner, music direction. Broadway veteran. Recordings with American Symphony Orchestra released Sterling Records. Advanced Piano lessons using the European tradition, pupil of Tobias Matthay School (London) and Denise Lassimone (Paris)
*** Lesson Details *** If you're a beginner, I want you to start playing right away, with less emphasis on deciphering sheet music and more on the immediate physical sense of the keyboard. You have to enjoy playing by any means before you are inundated with the page. Reading music follows soon, but not before you can play music you like. If you're more advanced, I can help you with technical development, and begin to widen your musical senses.
*** Studio Equipment *** 1926 Steinway A
*** Travel Equipment *** I provide Books and Musical Literature. Students must have instrument, electronic or acoustic.
*** Specialties *** I teach any style of music that you prefer. I also accept students with disabilities and special needs.
John has been teaching my 6 year old daughter for 3 months now and not only has he done a tremendous job gauging her abilities and teaching her but he has made it so much fun she wants to play the piano all the time.
July 23, 2014
John's biggest strengths are his patience, understanding and seeming endless facility with music. I read music but not fast enough to allow me to play good pieces, so John translates everything into physical movements. This makes it very easy to play interesting music, which makes me want to play more. I think he has shown me how learn, how to refine things so they are satisfying. I highly recommend him as a teacher, for beginners or advanced.

My son is six years old and has been taking piano lessons with John for six months. John is a unique and engaging teacher. His extensive knowledge of music and skill at the keyboard were apparent from the beginning. He can easily demonstrate a multitude of songs and then teach them on the spot. My son is excited to play a "whole song," be it Sponge Bob or Beethoven. John's teach-by-numbers technique appeals to my son's love of numbers and patterns yet he is also quickly learning how to read sheet music. John really is skilled at disguising a lesson on technique or theory as a game. He is goofy while at the same time encouraging and supportive of my son. He keeps it light, fun, and skill appropriate. Since he comes to our home, I also appreciate John's focus on the lesson - he arrives and departs in a timely manner. I highly recommend John as a piano teacher.
I teach theory along with the lessons so my students will have a better understanding of what they are learning to play.
Hi, my name is Cindi C., and I have loved music for as long as I can remember! As a child I loved to sing with the radio, and belt out hymns as loud as I could from the backyard. My mom enrolled me in dance class at the age of 3, and I loved dancing and performing! At age 7, a classmate played the piano in our music class one day, and I fell in love with it! I started taking lessons on the piano, and 3 years later started learning how to play the flute. In high school I started teaching piano lessons, and have been doing it on and off for about 30 years. My years of experience have definitely helped me to become a better teacher. I try my best to be very patient and compassionate with my students, and I tailor the lessons to meet their individual needs and goals. I want my students to have fun at their lessons, so I will play mus
ic games with them to help them memorize notes on the staff and rhythms. I also try to find out what music they like, and find music or write music that they would enjoy learning to play.
When I was in high school I decided I wanted to major in music at college and began working toward that goal. I won a piano accompaniment scholarship at Northeast Missouri State University ( now called Truman State University), and there I majored in music education. Piano was my main instrument, and flute was my secondary instrument. I played my flute in marching and concert band, accompanied many different soloists on the piano as well as our show choir, and sang in the acapella choir. I have been playing and performing ever since! Now I teach a children's choir at my church, play the flute in our church orchestra, and play in the Gainesville Flute choir. I enjoy teaching both the piano and the flute to young and old alike! I would love to share my joy of music with you!
*** Lesson Details *** Our lessons will be a time of fun and creative ways to learn to play the music that you love! Our first lesson we will talk about your goals, and then I will recommend music methods based on those goals.
I tailor the lessons to fit each child or adults individual needs and wants. I use flashcards and play games to help you to learn your music facts, and also use a music theory book to help you learn basic music symbols and notes.
By about 6 months, you will be able to play simple pieces, be able to keep a steady beat, and know the notes on both the bass and treble clefs. At this point, I will recommend some easy solo books based on the music you would most like to play. Or if you have some favorite songs you would like to learn, I will write out the melody with a simple chord accompaniment in the left hand for you to play. You will continue to progress through the piano method levels, and we will continue to add different elements to your lessons, such as learning scales and how to play different styles of music.
I want our lessons to be fun and interesting for you, so I will do my best to help you find the music that you will enjoy playing!
*** Studio Equipment *** Lessons in the living room, piano
*** Travel Equipment *** I expect my students to have their own instrument or piano/full size keyboard. I can get their music books, but would like to be reimbursed for them. I will bring my own metronome/tuner, and if they don't have their own stand, I will bring one with me.
*** Specialties *** I have used the Bastien method and Piano Adventures by Nancy and Randall Faber for Piano. I have used Trevor Wye for teaching flute.

Spiros was really great. Very friendly. I look forward to taking more lessons from him.

Spiros is my guitar instructor for over a year now, I’m so happy to be learning with such an amazing Guitar master 😊.
Not only did I learn how to play, he actually thought me how to read music and work on my vocals.
I couldn’t be happier 😃.
I absolutely recommend to take him as your teacher, you will not regret it!
I took my first Music Theory course in high school and immediately fell in love with it. I never listened to music the same way again. Just as people who know the rules of a sport seem to have a deep connection when watching it, I feel people with an understanding of the rules of music enjoy it to a higher degree. It all starts with an introduction to piano and learning how to read pitch and rhythm. Then a trip back in time to study early music and how it evolved into what we hear today.
My name is David and I'm a professional musician who just moved to North Austin. I came from Cincinnati, where I went to the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, taught dozens of students at all levels and played regular gigs every weekend. I have been teaching for over fifteen years, and I'm looking to get a few new students. I teach guitar, piano, bass guitar and even upright bass. If it's a tutor you are looking for I can also teach music theory and appreciation. I have a knack for teaching young people, probably because I was young when I started my musical journey. I've been very successful at inspiring a student's love of music and instilling the patience required to take on the challenge of playing an instrument. The first thing I like to do is get to know you, the music you enjoy and your goals. In a way, I l
ike to begin by letting the student lead. In addition to learning from you, I intend to present you with new information, to try and broaden your musical tastes and teach you how to be an active listener.
David has been so amazing with out 9 year old daughter. We have gone to him for over 2 years and she has come so far with her skills! He has so much patience. He's so kind and wonderful with kids. We were recommended by a friend and now we recommend him! He's high in demand for sure! We are sad we can't use him anymore due to scheduling issues. His prices are better than others too!

Quickly contextualized my needs as a student, and got me familiar with components and techniques of composition. The goal was to be able to help me more easily communicate ideas and designs to audio engineers at a company I work at. There has been a very observable benefit to this in the expedience of discussions, and fidelity of concept being engineered.

David is very kind and sweet to my kid. He has so much patient. He makes the class fun, entertain and way beyond expectation.
Get into the whys and hows of music! Music is a language. Some can speak it. Some can understand it when spoken. But few can write it. Analyze your favorite songs, learn about song structure, chord spellings, scales, and lots more!
Since 2010, I have taught private music lessons to students of all ages. Focusing on instrument techniques and the concepts of music theory, I guide students along their musical journeys and help them find joy in the music-making process. The music instructors I had over the years made a lasting impact on my life and I will never forget them. I now strive to do the same for my students, to provide them with a meaningful learning experience in music. I studied music at Ramapo College of New Jersey, worked as a touring musician and audio engineer in Nashville for 3 years, and now reside in Boston, where I play with many different musical groups, ranging in styles from jazz to folk and everything in between. I also recently helped a platinum-record engineer build a new recording studio, QUAD Lakeside in Raymond, Maine, which is where I recor
Learn the ins and outs and all-abouts of music theory! All types of scales, key signatures, chord construction, diatonic chords, and much, much, much more. I have a B.M. degree from Berklee College of Music and have been teaching students these ins and outs since 1982. I can help you unravel music's myriad mysteries, too!
Hi! I am a private music instructor offering lessons both in-studio and online. I hold a Bachelor of Music Degree from Berklee College of Music, where I graduated Summa cum Laude, and I have over 36 years' full-time experience as an instructor.
I also have over four decades of experience as a professional jazz, rock, and theater musician. My experience has taken me from nightclubs to concert stages to churches, as well as television studios, radio stations, and many recording studios.
Finally, I am a published author with several titles dedicated to helping musicians becoming the best they can be.
**** MY TEACHING STYLE ****
My teaching style is often referred to as laid-back, gentle, informative, and very supportive. My focus is on enrichment, encouragement, and results.
I don't work with “one-size-fits-all” methods. Ea
ch lesson is customized to make the most of each student's own unique abilities, limitations, preferences, and interests. Whether students prefer, or do better with, traditional materials, playing/singing along with their favorite recordings, improvisation, or anything in between, I am more than happy to accommodate and bring out each student’s best!
I teach real music -- students begin playing music they love almost from day-one. For example, many of my piano and guitar students pride themselves on learning to play every song on the Beatles One album ... playing right along with the CD! Reading, playing by ear, improvisation (jamming), singing while you play ... there are so many ways to play and avenues to explore in music.
**** MY STUDIO ****
My studio is spacious (very spacious – no cubicles here!), well-appointed, and very quiet. Unlike music stores and multi-lesson facilities, there are no other lessons on the premises, no drummers going crazy on the other side of the wall. This means students can concentrate better and learn faster. There is also plenty of room for parents and siblings who may wish to sit in on lessons.
**** STYLES / GENRES ****
I believe that students make the most progress learning music they love and I am very happy to teach every student the style of music he or she loves most.
My most requested genres are: pop, rock, country, blues, classic rock, jazz, and classical. Some students arrive knowing exactly what they want, but most are happy to explore various styles that interest them in search of the perfect fit. It is not at all uncommon for a student to spend part of their lesson polishing up a Beethoven piece or jazz standard, then finish up playing the chords to “Hotel California” along with the CD. Another student might start off their lesson learning a Taylor Swift hit, then move over to doing some blues improvisation. Variety is a wonderful thing and it is highly encouraged!
**** MY STUDENTS ****
Over the years, I have taught students from four years old to eighty-somethings. I’ve taught absolute beginners (most of my students start from square-one), hobbyists, seasoned professionals, even a Grammy nominee and a Grammy winner! Many of my young students have gone on to perform in school bands / jazz bands and/or professionally. In all cases, they acquire a skill that will last for a lifetime and provide joy, enrichment, and satisfaction.
Do you have a song or two in your heart? Contact me today and I will help you reach your musical goals and have a very good time doing it!
I have just started guitar lessons with Stan and the lessons are going very well. It's exciting to be learning note reading which is something I have always wanted to do. Stan is thorough and clear in his instructions and I look forward to each lesson. I feel lucky to have Stan as my teacher.
September 30, 2017
Stan is very knowledgeable about singing, and he teaches more than just voice lessons. It seems like he looks for the best in you as an artist, and try to take it to another level. I'm a new student of his, and it's been great so far. Looking forward to the weekly lessons.

I know it's too early to write a review after the first lesson. However, I was surprised by the wonderful way Sergio handled the time and the introduction for such a hard instrument like the alto sax.
My son Moneer is so excited to continue learning how to play alto sax with Sergio. In short Sergio is a very talented music instructor!

Definitely knows his stuff and does his research! Sergio is a guy who goes over and above to fufill the highest expectations. Highly recommend.
Music theory is an essential tool that every musician should possess. Many people struggle to understand music theory and are often intimidated by it, but I am here to tell you that you shouldn't. Through many years of study I have developed my own approach to music theory that others have found much simpler and more enjoyable.
I am a professional trombonist/guitarist living in New York City. I recently finished my Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance at the New School For Jazz and Contemporary Music. I have a lot of performing, touring, and teaching experience, performing in venues such as Carnegie Hall (Stern Auditorium and Zankel Hall), Dizzy's Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Jazz Standard, Smoke Jazz Club, and many other venues around the city. I have several guitar and trombone students, but include music theory, composition techniques, and ear training into my lessons as well. I have experience in a variety of different styles of music. I really enjoy sharing my love for music with my students, and my main priority is making sure that my students' learning experiences are as efficient and enjoyable as possible.
"Michelle is very patient and taught me different ways of solving problems with SATB and other music theory concepts like voice leading and chord functions
. She also helped me practice my musicianship skills."

"Billy is the absolute best! Transcribing rhythms and ear training analysis have always been my weaknesses when it comes to music theory knowledge and find
ing the right exercises and techniques to improve has always been quite a difficult process to achieve. However, within just a few tutoring lessons from Billy, I started to build a better understanding of music theory as a whole. In every tutoring lesson, Billy was patient, knowledgeable and friendly which quickly benefited my musicality and strengthened my overall friendship and love with music. Thank you Billy!"
